It took several years but by the time he was about 7 we were both so in the grove that no commands were necessary. We just looked at each other and knew what the other needed. Like to folks married a very long time, no words were needed
Totally get that! We just adopted a new dog and I forget sometimes that I can’t expect him to behave the same as the previous dog who we trained up for 12 years.
Yes,this is all very well. I know a lot about dogs. Have had rather a lot of them(I,m not young). Have had wonderfull dogs,including some rescues. But mainly pedigree-pups. I would prefer them. But ,like I said,I,m not as young as I used to be. And my latest pups gave me a lot of stress. My beloved sheepdog used to tear my clothes off my back during walks. A therapist helped me with this problem. He became the most wonderfull dog I ever had. He was easy to walk with,could even run free in the park. A very social dog(even after several attacks from other dogs). He died at the age of just four. suddeny he wouln,t eat anymore,could hardly walk. Went to the vet. She could,t find anything wrong. Went to another vet who could do more test. And my baby suddenly got some kind of convulsion and died. I miss this dog so very much! Like I said : I have had many dogs and even the "problem"ones became easier . Now I have a rescue from Spain. Much smaller than the kind of dog I prefer. But,as I thought, easier to handle . Not so! This dog(whippet-sized) pulls on the lead like a maniac. He;s scared of everything and everybody. I know,this is all about his past. I try to do everything for him to make him feel good. But it;s very hard. He loved to go to bed with me(as do I) but all three bitingen incidents(in my face) took place in bed. I try to do well by this dog. But he makes it very hard. Not only has he bitten me for no apparant reason, he allso attacks other dogs,scootmobiles,electric wheelchairs,runnnig children and joggers. He,s been with me for three years now,but it only seems to get worse instaed of better. This is problally of no use to me. Have written to many sites before. Never got a responce. Just want to warn against rescues. Of course they need a good home. I,m an animal-rights-activist. But just don,t do it when your older and don,t love dogs enough. I love dogs enough and am very glad I gave this dog shetler and all the love he needs. But it;s a little bit hard on his mummy.................And please don't tell me what to do about dogs A lot of people I meet during our walks do. I don't look my age and am short and slender(and a woman) This seems to give some people the right to lecture me. So wrong! When I know a lot more about dogs than they do.Of course writing this won,t be any help. But don't know where to turn to for understanding..............
I have more trouble understanding the dog warden who now says I swung my purse at the dogs who attacked me. Next they will have me breaking into the dog owner's house.
