My favorite Stephen Bishop song has always been "On And On". The combination of such smooth and relaxed music, with the somber and poignant lyrics is absolutely amazing!
"Toss up a heart and see where it lands." Love that line...it something we all do from time to time, but I've never heard it expressed that way before.
Bishop's vocals on It Might Be You is just perfect. 😢 I cry every time I hear that song. As for 80s duets, so many of them, especially from the early 80s. But one of my favourite of all time is the Whitney Houston & Teddy Pendergrass's Hold Me. Man, what a duo, and what a song!
OMG, "Hold Me" is so amazing!!! I listen to that song quite often. Another great one is "The Closer I Get To You" by Roberta Flack & Donnie Hathaway. 😎
"You have no right to ask me how I feel" one of my all time lines! I knew that had to come from somewhere real. Steven Bishop is a fantastic songwriter, composers, musician and vocalist of my generation so underrated it's criminal. The lines to this song absolutely nailed it. Steven is a great interview I love to hear the conversation with him. Fantastic episode, I will watch this one again for sure
Phil is connected to so many great songs whether he wrote, sang, or both not only from his solo career but also with genesis. He is one of my favorites for sure.
It can depend on the mood I'm in sometimes. Especially how we can really feel the emotion He put in some of his songs. Now his biggest hits I could make a case for most of them depending on my mood but 2 tracks that were not as big that may be my favorites are taking it all too hard and never a time. Both very underrated.
Relationship breakups have given us some of the best songs and become the (unintended?) staple of so many singer song writers whose careers catapulted as a result. It’s almost a sub genre of music - breakup songs.
Great story about all the moving parts that make incredible songs by incredible artists. Phil Collins is one of the great artists ever and still underappreciated. Once again....bravo Adam 👏👏👏
Bishop is so connected in the business. When On and On was fresh out it couldn’t get enough airtime. Separate lives is a strong vocal ballad with a dragging disjointed rhythm, but the lyrics are painfully smart. Saw him at a Yacht Rock concert a few years ago. Thanks Adam!
This song is absolutely heartbreaking. The emotion is palpable. Against All Odds is another Phil Collins song that evokes all kinds of emotion. I can’t imagine what it takes to put such difficult emotion into a format that’s so public, but what an incredible way to process. White Nights is an absolute favorite of mine since my mom made me watch it as a kid. I always encourage movie lovers to give it a chance.
This one is so good. I never knew Bishop wrote this. He is such an underrated singer songwriter. Collins was on fire. The perfect duet. So powerfully done. The emotion is palatible. Yet another 80s classic.
80s Classic ? 😂😂 You are probably the type of delusional 🤡 who thinks the 80s was the Best Decade musically ! 😂 Most of the music in this video was terrible 🗑️
Not familiar with this song, but Stephen Bishop's vocals in "It Might Be You" really tugs at the heartstrings! That one makes me yearn for someone to hold & kiss me.
Stephen Bishop has it all. His voice is superb, he writes beautiful melodies with meaningful lyrics then throws in an occasional jazz chord that makes his songs irresistible. Separate Lives is a beautiful song but for me On and On is my favorite. His catalogue is full of master pieces. I remember his first 3 albums had no fillers at all. The quality of his work is amazing, I never tire of listening. Bravo Bish.
This is a very emotional song when you get older and can truly relate to it after having gone through a few breakups. And Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin did a great job on it.
I hummed a little to the hubby who immediately said, “Oh yes, I can feel that one in the gut”. He ran to the piano, looked up the chords and lyrics on his cell phone to sing it. He wondered back in to the kitchen w “separate lives” playing on his phone & shushed me when I started to speak. Amazing how songs from the past can bring back such nostalgic feelings. Awesome look back and a catch up with Stephen Bishop, when no auto tunes was available. Beautiful Tenor voice! 🎵💜 Mike & Dawn Not sure of duets we’d like to hear. My hubby said us, lol 💞
Separate Lives came out the same week my first serious boyfriend broke my heart. I was 19 and I would sit in the dark playing it over and over, bawling my eyes out. It still gives me a little stab when I hear it.
Another great episode! This song has great meaning for my Dad - precisely because of that main lyric “you have no right to ask me how I feel.” My Dad is now 92, and pop music was not his thing - but my family loved White Nights and he loved that song, as it spoke a real truth to him. My parents were part of a group in which leaders and other members often treated people poorly… yet they would then proceed to act as if they cared, asking how you were doing. This song spoke the truth about people having to earn the right to our intimate thoughts, they have have to earn trust. And when people are the very cause of our hurt and pain, then it is absurd for them to be the one asking the question. They have no right. Interesting how someone from a different generation could write a lyric that connected so well with my Dad. Hearing the story of this song is great, because I now know that the lyric that was so powerful for my Dad was from an emotion-filled real-life exchange that drove the creation of the song itself. And by the way, my parents had left the group they were in just months before this song came out… and they never went back. The bridge was burned, and they were no longer subject to emotional abuse and manipulation.
When I saw the title, I immediately thought it was on Harry Nilsson...he hit the top 10 with Everybody's Talkin and Without You, neither of which he wrote but sang beautifully...and yet he wrote the hit One for 3 Dog Night!
Love this song. Absolutely beautiful and heartrending. Ah, Phil. Everything he touched then was gold. Also dearly love the track from Tootsie but always forgot who did it. Won't forget now. Bishop is great talent in his own rightm
You always bring so much to each new episode. I truly enjoy the 'deep dives" that you do in every storytelling. Also, the interviews that you share bring my musical memories into a new dimension. Thanks for what you do. Aloha!
Steven Bishop seems like such a cool guy. What a great story, too. Also, the note about Face Value-- that album is such a sleeper. It has its hits, of course, but there are so many deep, dark, underappreciated tracks on that album. So many raw, personal moments that you just won't find on modern music-- like the little, barely audible "Over The Rainbow" refrain at the very end of the album. Gives me chills.
This song holds such bittersweet memories regarding my first love in my teenage years! So bittersweet! He broke up with me BUT....many many many years later I now know he was and never would be a strong enough personality match for me! Happily married for 32 years now to my adult love and still going strong! Thanks first love for the experience, handing me my first heart break and for unwittingly showing me exactly how strong I can be! :) Separate Lives............
Stephen Bishop is one of the most underated musicians in the last 45 years..amazing talent...I love Marilyn Martin's vocals but I love Stephen's original version of separate lives!
I was fortunate to see Steven Bishop perform at my local casino along with the now late Gary Wright. He was amazing as well as Gary! I love the song he wrote for White Knights, but for me I just have a special place in my heart for It Might Be You. Thanks professor as always for the insight and great interviews! Can’t wait to see what you do next!
Thank you!!! This was my favorite film from the day it opened. and the song has been a favorite for years. I stopped the video and put the song on loop and journaled. I never thought about why the song hits me so deep, but now I do and my therapist will laugh at how I find breakthroughs. That’s you “doing the lord’s work” my friend. Best video yet ❤❤❤
HA HA! Thanks Adam for putting in Stephen's Animal House scene. The look of shock on his face always kills me. I've always respected that even though he could've been some serious heartthrob, he's gone off into being unnecessarily hilarious. Also, side note - you've always put in the work on the channel, but I think the flow of your stories is getting better and more fun and interesting all the time. Keep up the good work!
I had one of those "you have no right" moments years ago. I had some anger, but mostly immense pain. It took me some time to realize that even though we broke up, she still cared for me. At the time, that just made it more painful. My favorite 80's duet is Phil squared (Phil Collins and Philip Bailey) with "Easy Lover."
As always, great interview. However, Phil Collins was hardly underrated. He was every third song on the radio in the '80s and '90s. When I think of underrated, I think of Joe Jackson.
The knowledge that Stephen wrote "Separate Lives" kind of floated at the back of my head from the late 90s until early 2004 when an old friend generously bought me a copy of *Face Value.* Listening song by song and reading the individual performance credits, I learned that Phil had recruited Stephen to sing harmonies on "This Must Be Love". That's when I learned about how Phil and Stephen had a long-standing professional connection predating the *White Nights* soundtrack.
White nights while now a very dated movie has such an extraordinary message today is that the power of the arts and music can unite everybody and in 2023 it's still relevant

Phil is one of the few whose hits span several decades. Saw him live a few times, also with Genesis…..legendary stuff. The day HE will leave us will make as much as an impact as George Michael and Michael Jackson.
A very unique case of stardom for sure. To write a great song for someone else, and to sing a great song by someone else shows his versatility and connections!
I recall endlessly rehearsing "Endless Love" for my brother's wedding, and still ending up doing "Annie's Song" and the Paul Stookey wedding song, anyway. Discovered Bm 11th, per an online chord speller, when doing the very old "Low How a Rose". To me it was a new chord.
I think you nailed in Professor. So many good points...Phil Collins being under appreciated, this duet being so haunting, the fact that he and Marilyn should have done more...heck ANYONE and Marilyn...just get her back into music. Its both interesting and sad that Stephen still has a bit of trouble reminiscing about the song..."there is one tricky line I don"t like as much". Do you know which line he was talking about? I also agree that based on the song you kinda make up your own movie in your head about a relation ship ending. Thanks professor..I've been waiting for you to do a video on this song!
You know, it almost sounds ridiculous to say that Phil Collins is underappreciated, but... even with all his fame... I think it's still true. That man worked harder than James Brown. And his drumming history is certainly generally unknown. His live history. He exploded 15+ years into his career, which was already legendary to those who knew. Yeah, strange but true: he is underappreciated.
Loved White Nights. The way the concept of that song entered the movie was awesome. What a cast and what dancing. Was a big Stevie Nicks fan so was excited for Marilyn Martin. That whole soundtrack I loved. Was such a piece of the times.
Thank you Adam for making me rediscover this song. I had almost forgotten it. Great song indeed. It brought me back when I was a teen watching the video of the song on the TV program "Video Hits" on CBC here in Canada. I think I had a crush on Marylin Martin. :)
@@RBS_That's it! I think I bought it because I was looking for "Falling" by LeBlanc & Car, but I didn't know who sang it at the time. It had a song with that title, and both the store clerk & I thought that was it. This was in 1991, before my first top 40 book. 🙂
@@RBS_Oh, it also has "On And On," which I also had on a 70's gold album, which I had to order through the mail. I was a kid, so my parents had to order it for me. 🙂
I always loved this song even tho it made me cry. The first time I heard it I knew what it was about. The raw emotion in their voices as they sing it. You know that they are feeling every word. And that corus just always blows me away, because you know it's coming from a place of hurt, agony almost like they wanna die. Anybody that has been in a relationship that ended knows the hurt, the pain. So yea this song just really gets me every time. Great song tho, very great song. It's songs like these that people resonate with and can feel the pain that these two people are going through. It's an amazing song.
I remember hearing this song and watching the music video thinking, "..who is that woman singing?" I thought her voice was awesome, but had never heard of her. and never really heard of her since. Hope she is still singing. Poor Phil has health issues, last I knew he was walking with a cane. Time leaves no one behind. Enjoy and appreciate everyday. Eventually memories is all we will have, so create a lot of them.
Ah I so have loved both these songs and cool to connect the dots between them! White Nights is such an awesome movie! The scene of Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines final dance to Robert Teppers’ Prove Me Wrong is phenomenal!
So I actually lived through my own Separate Lives experience when this song first came out. So I can really relate to it. Once again I didn't know the backstory to this song, so I greatly appreciate you feeling in the blankets.👍
This is the one hit song by Phil Collins I rarely listen to, not because it’s a bad song or anything, but just because it doesn’t really resonate with me at all. It often gets lost in the shuffle out of all of his many hit songs in the 80’s.
I love this show today, Prof! I've just been thinking of the songs from White Nights and how much I loved that movie. Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines were just delightful to watch in the dance scenes😊 I count that as one of the 80's dance movies even if the tone is way more somber then you usually find with those. I have to say I have Lou Reed's My Love is Chemical on my Raiders of the Pop Charts playlist, too!
And here I thought Stephen Bishop wrote "Separate Lives" for me ... the lyrics fit a break up of mine that happened when the song came out, still gives me a throat lump when I hear it.

More mad respect for Bishop. And Collins, and Martin. I love the interviews.
Thanks Bish! You have his same nickname!
@@ProfessorofRock exactly!
Such a beautiful movie and a truly beautiful song. Steven Bishop is a very talented man and loved him in Animal House.
Another set of people I've never heard of, except Phil Collins ‼️ keep them coming prof. I'm learning a lot 😄
One of my favorite songs. I really like this song from 1985. A great song.
Oh yeah -- Karen Allen in her prime is a definite heartbreaker!
"You have no right to ask me how I feel"... what a great line!
It's just heart breaking. Hey Flave, what's our favorite duet of the rock era?
@@ProfessorofRock Always liked Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks in Whenever I Call You Friend. Perfect balance of two unique vocal styles....
It’s just packed with feeling.
Two of my favorites duets from the 80's - Don't Fight It (Loggins & Perry), and Baby Grand (Joel & Charles).
Great choices!
I completely forgot about the second one! Haven’t heard it in YEARS.
great job with this video Professor!...love it...truly some Good Medicine!
Amazing interview. So glad you captured it.
I love BOTH songs! I actually have a Stephen Bishop CD, and it has his version of "Separate Lives," as well as "It Might Be You."
...It gotta be that CD, "Best Of Bish" on Rhino...ain't it GREAT!??? ; )
Which Cd is it? I think I have it!
Both great songs.
"SEPARATE LIVES" is one of my ALL TIME Favorite songs!!! "It might be you" is another favorite!
This is one of my favorites you’ve done!
Thank you for this interview !!!!!! Great episode !!!!!
Ah I so have loved both these songs and cool to connect the dots between them! White Nights is such an awesome movie! The scene of Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines final dance to Robert Teppers’ Prove Me Wrong is phenomenal!
I don't really have a "best duet of the 80's" but my guilty pleasure duet of the 80's is Prince and Sheila E's Love Bazaar. Fun and funky! 😎
The interview with Bish was too cool… Thanx Adam!!
Okay Adam, now that you've teased us, you absolutely have to put up a video of you and your wife singing Seperate Lives in Karaoke.
Coming soon! JK
So I actually lived through my own Separate Lives experience when this song first came out. So I can really relate to it. Once again I didn't know the backstory to this song, so I greatly appreciate you feeling in the blankets.👍
Thanks for sharing! I totally understand!
Stealing home is a heartbreaker of a movie, about a guys first crush and exciting but not too stable friendship with her .
I saw Marilyn Martin singing for Fleetwood Mac at the Las Vegas Hilton New Year's Eve show. Dave Mason was also performing with the band!
Very cool. Do you know her?
@@ProfessorofRock Not well.
When?

Great interview, really like Stephen Bishops music!
My favorite Steven Bishop song is his cover of Surfin USA from The Kentucky Fried Movie.
10:10 - Other songs that have, an 'intro chorus'.
Domenico Modugno's 'Nel blu, dipinto di blu (Volare)' and Patula Clark's 'This is my Song'.
I remember him! I didn't know Steven Bishop wrote that song. I love it.
Great interview, Adam!!! Love Stephen, Love Phil!!! Love you and your channel!!!❤❤❤
Thanks so much!
STEPHEN BISHOP!! Forgot all about him. Nice!! Another Re-visit for the list. Thanks Professor!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
Walking on Air, an underrated song from an underrated movie.
This is the one hit song by Phil Collins I rarely listen to, not because it’s a bad song or anything, but just because it doesn’t really resonate with me at all. It often gets lost in the shuffle out of all of his many hit songs in the 80’s.
Have you ever been thought a tough break up?
I think 'separate lives' is his best and thanks for telling us about the story behind the song.
Thanks Neil!
It's so true. I think we've all felt that. Thanks for sharing!
Wow. I completely understand, Christine.
That was an amazing “Revelations” story Professor! Great interview and insight. And to mention Burt so casually, very cool! 🤘🔥
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dude. you are getting so good at this. Great episode.
Every night I find myself lying in bed watching your videos. So much great information and so much great music. Thank you for doing this
