I’m a 46-50 Novice. This is my first season EVER. When I’m in the gate, I’m basically focused on getting a good first crank. But once the cadence starts, my concentration is on hearing that first beep and trying to synch my first movement to meet it.
Kerry, welcome to the sport and I am here for you and newer riders like you! Thank you for sharing and you gave me an awesome idea and if you let me, I will share it with you?
As a 49-year old in my first ever season of BMX, I'm seeing more an more adults like me jumping into the sport! I'd love to see more content for adults. Even with access to two busy tracks here in Oregon, we don't have many opportunities to have training cater to us.
Great video! I'm starting BMX racing next year at age 40. I can't agree more with tip number 3. I've definitely experienced it, recognize it's powerful potential, but never heard it put to words in a great way like you just did. I'm making the switch for mountain biking and I will definitely work on those first 2 tips to get myself ready for the gate. Thanks again.
I'm a 35 year old novice and this was my first season. I'm starting to feel confident at the gate but still have a lot of work to do. I do tend to stare at the gate though, lol.
Thank you so much for making these kind of videos. I watch a lot of your content and it helps me a lot. I continue to improve and succeed because of you. Thanks coach 🙏 😁
When I used to race, I would look left and right, then try to time that gate drop, as best I could. I have never gone over the bars at the gate. But man y many times over the first or second step up or down or whatever. Over shooting any target sucks. Hahaha I loved racing. I remember you Romero. Weren’t you racing in the prime of everyone’s life, around 25-30? I grew up watching all the different VHS tapes from the 90s. I don’t as born in 84 I built from the ground up, my 3 piece crank and shaver bars, riding near “”Bingham Bikes” Glen Adams was the manager at the local Salt Lake Bingham bikes and was “rod” or “rex” as a stunt double in the masterpiece, RAD. “And from Utah, riding for Bingham bikes, Glen Adams”. I doubt he would remember me, but he was a cool dude. I really miss BMX. The whole racing of it. Look l ft and right and say…. “This is mine today. Thanks for showing up.” Rad Canyon West Jordan or south Jordan was my home track.
Dude- tell me about it. I tried wrestling, hard af! I loved HS football and if I had mental guidance I believe I would had been a D1 player. I was too much of a jackass. 🙏🏼
That's right, back in my day was the same, and today it's different with the random cadence and the important emphasis of a healthy and powerful second and third pedal accelration.
My focus and anchor crank flip once clip in and breath every single gate i go deaf when im on the gate so strictly looking at the lights no distraction. I also have written on my number plate "just breath"
Hi coach g, I was just wondering at what horn or what light do you start to make your first movement, or when are you supposed to react at a random start gate
I focus 20 feet ahead of my front wheel on the ground and I tell my brain to shut up then I breathe. Breathing helps me the most. Throw my full body forward and 80% forst crank and 100 the second
I’m pretty new to BMX and im pretty good already but i have trouble when i start in starting gate i start in the lead and then i get slower in middle so idk iff i should start so fast
When I’m on the gate I look to the first jump preparing for what Others around me are going to do since I race the same people often I know what and how they are going to do out of the gate
I'm 12 intermediate going to expert and for the things that help me to focus would be staring at the light And just preparing my mind and get all the distracting thoughts out
Deep breath in, deep breath out. Stand, arms straight, wrist forward, check crank position,, deep breath in deep breath out ...EXPLODE! I like my competitors so I dont want to "kill them", that gate tho....we aren't friends lol
So idk if anyone will respond but I have a fear of flipping the gate and my reaction time is not good because of that and I’ve practiced many (well some) reaction games and I don’t know how to overcome this so anything helps :D
I love this kind of stuff. Fear is just protecting you because of a prior incident and you labeled what that meant or a belief that one may happen. If you can change the meaning of a gate start then you can overcome or overwrite the belief (the meaning). So, if you fear flipping the gate, then what would you like to do instead?
Hover right off the seat way back almost looks like sitting down shot out of the gate a couple feet ahead of everyone , Usually got first place unless Danny Ortiz my main competition was there

Prayer when on deck and then trusting that prayer once I get on the gate. That’s how I focus.

Thanks for the video! I’ve been racing for three years and this definitely helped me!
A calmed state of mind, and a relaxed attitude while gating up. A simple routine to allow focus and an explosive start and first straight.
Simple is the key
But what makes you calm and relaxed?

I would try blow the gate down

Hi coach g, I was just wondering at what horn or what light do you start to make your first movement, or when are you supposed to react at a random start gate
What Ashley said. Check the live video from this past week. I go over this topic in the questions segment.
Focusing to me is looking at the gate and listening to my breathing while trying to relax
What can I use to hold my pedals for box sprints? I have a habit of pulling back and I heard box sprints help a lot.
Gary Ellis used to start with his crank 3 clicks below level on the pedal side, getting into the full power stroke or rotation sooner.
Hlo how do you jump how do you jump to get that feeling out
I focus 20 feet ahead of my front wheel on the ground and I tell my brain to shut up then I breathe. Breathing helps me the most. Throw my full body forward and 80% forst crank and 100 the second
I’m pretty new to BMX and im pretty good already but i have trouble when i start in starting gate i start in the lead and then i get slower in middle so idk iff i should start so fast
Always start out fast and end fast! This could simply be a conditioning issue...
Focuses means to nothing think just do, its a natural movement
Thanks Cody, I agree, and, this is what I would call the "state of flow!"
i don't worry about getting out of gate but i work to get those next 5 peadles
When I’m on the gate I look to the first jump preparing for what Others around me are going to do since I race the same people often I know what and how they are going to do out of the gate
A jump jump jump how do you do
I'm 12 intermediate going to expert and for the things that help me to focus would be staring at the light And just preparing my mind and get all the distracting thoughts out
Love it!
for me to Focus on is the light
My 6 year old said focus to him is looking a few metres ahead not at the gate like the cadence says😎🤷♂️
If it works, then that is perfect for him!
Deep breath in, deep breath out. Stand, arms straight, wrist forward, check crank position,, deep breath in deep breath out ...EXPLODE! I like my competitors so I dont want to "kill them", that gate tho....we aren't friends lol
to me focus is looking in front of me and figuring out what i could do that is faster on the jumps when im in the gate
Thanks for sharing! 🏁
I honestly just yolo it and focus on winning.
Focus on the outcome you want, not the outcome you don’t want!
@@BMXTraining Ok thanks!
i get scared when the gates open and the sound goes can you help me with that
Do you want one on one help?
@2:28 Duggie!
I focus on my balance. Relaxed, still as a glass of water.
I like that!
So idk if anyone will respond but I have a fear of flipping the gate and my reaction time is not good because of that and I’ve practiced many (well some) reaction games and I don’t know how to overcome this so anything helps :D

If you can change the meaning of a gate start then you can overcome or overwrite the belief (the meaning). So, if you fear flipping the gate, then what would you like to do instead?
Sometimes at the bigger races I cannot hear the cadence very well. I might want to become a light looker.
Do whatever seems the most effective!

My focus is on the gate drop and the first straight and after the corner...

Thanks Rodrigo! Keep snappin'!
focusing feels like staring at nothing while completely shifting your attention to (in my case) the beep sounds. thats what it feels like to me
