  • Today we take a look at the Alto Austrian Jaw Harp by Grover and see what it has to offer. Is it a good for beginner? How does it compare to other harps in it's price range? Is it a good buy?

I picked up the blue one on amazon a few months back, it's larger and bass-ier. Got it because it was cheap and wasn't sure if I'd stick with the jaw harp after a couple weeks. The trigger definitely sliced the crap out of my finger, like hundreds of shallow papercuts, but I found that trimming that bit off with wire cutters and filing down the sharp end (mine no longer has that curve hook) and it plays MUCH better and smoother. It doesn't have much audio range, but it served its purpose for introducing me the basics. Just placed an order for the Lighthouse after watching your review on it and I'm excited to play it when it arrives this week!

It may be a toy harp and also easily bent or broken. Try a Paval Potkin Altai Khomus. Very affordable and very easy to play. Good sound.

Aw... I just found this exact one while digging through stuff in my grandma's basement. I cleaned it and was trying to understand how to play it right, and I thought it could've been of some, at least, rarity!
    Sad. 😂

Been looking at the Russian Vargen- Wave. Have you played it? If so, what's your take on it? Thank you!

One of the ones that I spend a lot of time playing is the Szilagyi Chancellor. It is widely available and affordable as well being a good harp for beginners to start out on. I got mine for around 30$ shipped. It was the second harp I ever bought and I still play it quite a bit. Here is a song played with it in the video in this link. ua-cam.com/video/RQ_Eyv7RFpg/v-deo.html Here is a review of it. ua-cam.com/video/xNVI23o3DbY/v-deo.html Here is a comparison of a few different types of jaw harp. ua-cam.com/video/PZh2R8qvpHI/v-deo.html Also the altai khomus by P. Potkin is a good one as well.

+ThePurpleHarpoon I second your comment. The bass tartars are hard to beat for the money. Good form.
