Discussions about modern metal aside, I am so glad that you covered this game. During my early teens it was my happy place in a time when I didn’t have too many friends and had to deal with some severe bullying. Even if it’s somewhat a parody of metal culture, I ate it up and it drove me straight into the heavy metal subculture. I loved finding new and interesting bands as well as lesser know tracks by bands I already knew of. For about a year my music taste was literally the soundtrack to this game lol. I have branched out a fair bit since then, but I found some some of my favourite songs through this game and I still love them with all my heart. I still get all warm and fuzzy when replaying this game (which I must have done over 10 times by now) and I can’t help myself forgiving every drawback it has. This video really made me remember how much I love Brutal Legend and you might have triggered me to replay it again now.

Honestly if I was to make a sequel to this game it would be about the child of Eddie and his/her personal journey of self discovery and musical taste. Mainly after he/she is pressured into only accepting a certain type of music by the people around him. How it would go is after a long time of being accosted by the environment around him for not fitting in the main character find a chest with a mythic record player and a box of records. There is four records each representing a different musical style. All these places are like the the land of Brutal Legend they are the mythical ideal of the genre. In each land you'll meet you're guide who will take you through the land discovering and makes it great in its own ways and how it has more in common with other genres of music than one would think. Along with that you'll be discovering more about yourself at the same time. The four lands would be the land of country a southern/western world based on Americana folklore with someone like Charley Crocket or Hank Williams the 3rd as your guide. Then off to the land of Rock n Roll a land based on the greaser/rock and roll lifestyle imagine Vegas, hotrods, Vegas all that good stuff and your guide will be Brian Seltzer. After that you go to the land of punk which is based on rebellious and xtreme lifestyle but with the lowdown and dirty vibe lead by your guide CJ Ramone or Tim Armstrong. And finally the world of rap and urban and soulful land where you are lead through by MF Doom. The reason I've chosen these genres is because they are the changing points in music history that the older generation was against even though the older genres are by the the end of the day what made the music of today. And when you are done with your adventure you head back to the land of metal with friends you met in each area to help defeat an evil that is the embodiment of things like depression, sadness, oppression, and creative discouragement that can only be defeat by the power of understanding that all types of music is good in its own way and only through understanding and encouragement of music and creative can we get through anything.
But that's just what I think would work

Brutal legend is such an underrated game. I would kill for a sequel or a remaster for it. I love every single thing about this. The belt buckle is actually a token from the fire beast that Eddie took from his dad to honor him and used it as a belt buckle and it took him back in time in the age of metal. The game even has some hidden lore that you need to take your time to look for. I bought this game on sale to relive my childhood memories playing this. I’m excited to see someone talk about this game since it’s once in a blue moon someone mentions it and even more rare to see someone actually making a video dedicated to brutal legend.

Found it in a Game Informer magazine around the time it came out, I just remember seeing the giant wall of amps, the bleak fields, and then seeing it all in action in different trailers being totally mesmerized, I got to play it for a night at a friend's house, thought about it ever since, until quite a few years later, after I dove head first into heavy metal and all things related this became one of the first games I played on a new computer, and one of the best game I've ever played. The most metal game in existence, others come close, but this one really nails it.

In regards to the passionate talk at the current state of metal, Nu Metal songs are actually so old now that not only several people are feeling nostalgic for them, but people are getting introduced to such music through their parents... a few unashamedly are even forming bands inspired by nu metal like Chaoseum. And considering that well... Slipknot is currently one of the biggest metal bands right now and how Rammstein managed to reach number 1 in over 10 countries with their untitled album, It's safe to say that Nu and industrial Metal (or music similar to it) isn't as universally hated as it's made out to be.
I can't speak for americans, but power metal bands like Sabaton and Powerwolf are doing very well in Europe, dominating the charts in their selective countries. Granted, they are old bands, but the fact that they can consistently be high in music charts, reaching number 1 in certain countries with their new albums, it's unlike anything compared to the metal scene in the US from statistics standpoint.
It's very likely that metal will not see a revival in the mainstream through 80s elitists, but people that grew up with Sabaton or Slipknot. From my experience, for all the mockery that nu metal or power/symphonic metal music gets, it actually hosts the least toxic metal community. Such communities seem to be way more welcoming of new things and experimentation.
Oh and of course, newcomers like Ghost also foster a fairly large community that doesn't give a crap what the elitists say. I highly doubt that metal will die out. Just because mainstream US media almost exclusively gives traction to the same old 80s stuff, that doesn't mean the rest of the world thinks the same way.

  • @warhawk638
    @warhawk638 2 роки тому +5

I agree and disagree with the end section. While much of metal tends to be stale and formulaic - that's what happens in the biggest pillars of the scene, and the niches of metal right now, as decentralized as it is, is large, very alive, and very creative. People nowadays tend to get introduced to the genre via old shit thanks to streaming making what's "current" less relevant. Metal doesn't need the top 100's and it never was a genre that broke that top 100 that much. It's always thrived in its niche, but connected scenes. "Mainstream" acts right now are massive and very popular, but not chart toppers, and that's fine. If it gets people in, and similar stuff drops them into the real meat of the underground, then that's awesome. Metalheads have always been gatekeepy but I think that's just a side effect of a standard that makes so many smaller bands produce such amazing and enjoyable music to this day.

I feel like genre-nazism and gatekeeping is inherent to any counter culture thing. I love metal. All kinds. Metalcore, ghost, old school stuff (metallica, pantera, megadeath, iron maiden, etc)
The scene exists. It's different though. I just had an excellent time at a concert with august burns red, fit for a king, erra, and like moths to flames. Great show!!!
And RIP warped tour. Warped tour got more people into that heavy style genre of music than anything else.

Yeah. Any counter culture movement that hits mainstream will try to gate-keep people out as a means of trying to stay counter culture. Otherwise it becomes part of the culture (which is just a matter of time). Not saying that this is either good or bad.

As someone who wasn't into metal before this game came out (and still only casually listens to it), I absolutely love this game. It really got me into the genre and showed me how varied it could be. A few tracks were even fun, relaxing, or beautiful to listen to, and I still listen to them from time to time. I even loved the RTS part, which I felt had some of the most epic gameplay moments of the main story.
You had a good point about introducing the player to playing other factions. I think a cleaner solution could've been utilizing side quests to introduce the player to other factions. Have one side character per enemy faction who asks you to help them revolt against their leaders via RTS battles, or something of the sort. Have those questlines unlock further as you progress the main story, and you get to experience all three factions at once, with roughly the same pacing, in a way that still suits the story.
Personally, I thought the Drowning Doom were really cool and would've leaped at the chance to play as them, especially since I already liked the RTS battles. If I had experience with all three factions, I probably would've even given the online mode a chance instead of mostly ignoring it.
That said, this is probably a design decision that would've had to be made early on. But if by some impossibly chance there's a Brutal Legend 2, they could probably try a similar approach.

My idea of a Brutal Legend 2 ironically came from a Babymetal song lol, specifically Ijime Dame Zettai: I am considering writing a fanfic on it but kinda reserved about it since my knowledge of metal is peripheral at best.
And please don't mind me being a weeb for saying that...
    1. Some time in the future, Hip Hop took over as the dominant music and culture in the once land of Metal. Hip hop subgenre artists represent different factions (e.g. Eminem, 50 cent, Kanye etc) run different regions of the world, and every other living person submits to various Hiphop factions.
    2. Eddie was gone in that whole Captain America situation, but he has children still stuck in the Land of Metal and they end up being the MCs for most of the game, trying to fight the Hiphop factions in a form of resistance until they can eventually they can find a way to summon Eddie.
    3. Eddie's kids resemble Babymetal, and that creates a lot of problems for them at the start.
    4. What is left of Metal (Ironhead) resistance is as you said, split up into small resisting factions that have resorted to infighting because of the "you're not true metal" thing. They also view Eddie's kids as definitely "not true Metal" and pariahs because they do not fall on any specific "old school" genre but rather its own "milkdrinker" mockery, and their existence is deemed an abberation. They slowly build their own faction and try and convince/conquer the other splintered Metal factions.

Yeah, I hear you on the narrow definition of metal. There's definite irony in that The Smashing Pumpkins, the band that most overtly took inspiration from Black Sabbath, and which is definitely metal if you listen to their albums, would probably be labeled as outside the metal genre by this game.

The one gripe I have with the soundtrack placement, yes, one, is the segment where they choose to shove in Through the Fire and the Flames. It is an awesome song but while it does sound like it would be perfect for escaping enemy bombardment in a collapsing stronghold it really didn't fit the action quite right.
It's a long ass song and that sequence is over way too quickly.

I think it was Razbuten who summed it up perfectly in a video about UI(?) saying something along the lines of “I want to love it, but only like it.” It’s okay, but it seems torn between a bunch of different gameplay systems and genres to where none of them get the space or focus they need for a _great_ experience. This game deserved to be better than it was.

Solid video overall until the end. I dunno, count me as one of the guys who doesn't think metal needs chart topping albums (there's a pretty vibrant scene in 2021 imo) but the failure of metal to break top 100 doesn't sound like the fault of a bunch of purists complaining on social media. Metal, even at the height of its popularity, has always been kinda niche.

@@shredgordon3240 Right, basically what I'd say was the height of metal's popularity. To illustrate my point, look at the top 50 highest selling artists of all-time. You'll see bands that get either labelled as metal or were influential on it's early development, sure. but not nearly as many who could be called country, hip hop, pop, or rock. Metal bands with broad mainstream appeal are few and far between or exist in an era when, for bizarre historical and cultural reasons, there's a large enough market of people for that sort of thing ala nu-metal in the 90's.

The last mission comes as a surprise to be honest. You think that now you finished with black tears and now going into finalee to fight daemons - and it suddenly ends.

Brütal Legend was the video game version of Dethklok... If a 2 were ever to happen (sometime after Half-life 3 and Beyond Good and Evil 2), I feel like there would have to be some sort of crossover especially seeing as how Cartoon Network killed it before the Brendon could really finish the Metalocaltpse storyline... Feels like the right level of reverence, satire, and epic scale
