for memory is uses radar (those large pods on the side and front of the turret) that track incoming projectiles. If one is moving towards the tank, it automatically acquires, locks on and fires a fragmentation round. This destroys chemical (HE and HEAT) warheads but also often causes kinetic penetrators to fracture and warp, degrading their penetrating power.
TLDR. radar shoots thingy, and blows it up or cuts it in bits
