Honestly I worked as a receptionist for three years in the state of TN a lot of people are being ignored bc doctors are lazy. They’re like lawyers the world has lots of them but very few good ones. Also if they know you for being loud they’ll sometimes even skip you and go to the next patient just to keep you waiting longer bc “you’re a difficult patient” a lot of this patients were white so we got a lot of lazy people also working not wanting to do the damn charting bc it takes them long so everything is “normal” and “take some Advil” and “water compressions” and “drink more water” and “steroids” is what they’ll sent you home with. Sad but true.

I am a Registered nurse and a black woman. I would not advise people to raise hell in the sense of yelling and screaming but I would tell people that they should advocate for themselves. If your nurse isn't listening to you ask to speak to the charge nurse, if that doesn't work ask for a nurse manager, if that doesn't work ask for a nurse supervisor. Don't hesitate to ask for your doctor to come speak to you. If you're not happy with the care you are receiving try to go somewhere else as long as it's safe to do that.

I’m hunched over in pain and had to wait 2 hrs crying from the pain. My husband was fuming mad and had to go and raise hell to get me seen. They finally took me in the back and pulled some blood and I went pale and fainted. That’s when the ER nurses took me seriously. Im a black registered emergency department nurse coming up on my 10yr mark.First things first my heart goes out to this woman. Working in the ER is the most difficult unit to work in. You are under staffed, under paid, under appreciated and constantly abused verbally, emotionally as well as physically by patients and other staff. Not only do we have walk in’s but we are constantly getting patients coming in from ems. And sadly at times all our rooms are full and there’s no where to move patients. And we are recognized more for our few failures instead praised for our many accomplishments. So please don’t group all nurses together because most of us are trying to do our best with the small amount of resources we have. If you’ve never worked in a hospital please be mindful of your words because you don’t truly understand till you're caring for 5 patients solo, with a waiting room with 20 plus patients waiting to be seen and ambulances arriving with more folks to be seen.

Until I got to the auditorium the next day....the mandated the training only for the staff of color. There wasn't a white person anywhere except for the trainer. I looked around confused. At one point, when they asked for feedback/comments...i let them have it. I asked how can you as a white person who lives in a mostly white state going teach me about bias and diversity? From the time I was 5 and in school, I had to learn how to straddle two cultures. I went from speaking English at school to Spanish at home; from adjusting to school norms to my cultural norms and back again. Why would any person of color be mandated when we know what it is first hand. Why aren't any of my white co workers here? They are the ones who need it. I love that Amanda said " YOU know your body". I remember when I was in labour with my first daughter, I kept calling my midwife to let her know how my labour was progressing. She kept shrugging me off and saying I was not in active labour just yet. I think, I because she may have seem many women in labour "overreact". But I was listening to my body and I knew I was close to giving birth. She Finally showed up to my house and checked me and said I still have a long way to go .. and she left. Long story short, she never even made it to the birth. My baby was nearly delivered by my husband and sister. Paramedics rushed into my home just in time as my baby was coming out.

When my sister was 3, my mum was setting the table for dinner and my sister climbed on the table to get a glass. She knocked over the glass, fell, and crushed the glass with her palms. My parents took her to the ER where they loosely bandaged her hands (with the glass still in them) and told my parents to wait. 2 hours later and the nurses are yelling at my mom to “control her child” who is upset bc she has glass shards in her hands! Well my dad raised HELL and that is when they were finally seen! My dad says after he spoke up the entire tone changed. Before my dad spoke up, the hospital was insinuating abuse and my parents were just trying to “behave”. After my dad spoke up, they started calling my parents sir and ma’am! And they finally took care of my sister.

Unfortunately I worked in a small neighborhood hospital ER. And everyone knows chest pain gets priority. So everyone states "I'm having chest pain and shortness of breath ". It's hard at times to decipher who's really telling the truth. While we try to get ALL chest pain in right away it's hard when everyone has the same complaints and there are no more ER rooms available.
We do try to get EKGs and blood work started in triage as well as xray.
It's not due to bias. Not saying that there might not be any bias in some situations but there are other situations we have to look at as well.
Also when ppl coming in "raising hell" it is also staff abuse. I don't have the perfect answer. The area I worked EVERYONE used the ED for primary care and not got emergencies. I've had a patient "raising hell" over being pushed back because they had a hang nail and we took an asthmatic patient first. Or ppl coming in with a cold and raising hell cause we took someone who was shot. 🤷🏾‍♀️
I think healthcare over all needs to be reviewed and laws should be put in place for betterment of all people including hospital staff.

I’m Mexican but hearing this story feels like if you are any other color than white you completely get treated differently.
I’m just saying cause I remember going into the ER and in complete pain. I had an ectopic pregnancy. They wanted to send me home and I was scared to go home. I was scared because a woman’s life ended in a neglectful hospital for sending her home and the family lost her when they didn’t want to take her off life support but the court ruled in favor of the hospital to pull the plug. She was on the news. I luckily had my mother who held her ground and if they wanted to send me home to give me a statement to guarantee my safety with this ectopic pregnancy. After all that I ended up going into surgery because they had no choice and I was already internally bleeding that could have resulted me in death.
I already am a mother to a daughter and if I had died she would have never known who her mother is.

Ask questions, what medication are you giving me? Are there other options? What are the risks? What will this test show? Bring a notebook and write everything down. I think that the health care systems needs to be be treated less like a business, and more of a government agency where they just can’t afford to be understaffed.
If they need to hire a doctor or two more to be able to make sure that people are seen at an adequate amount of time, then so be it!
I’ve recently been to the hospital 2 in the last 3 months, and I didn’t experience it personally, but I saw many patients waiting hours! Because there wasn’t a doctor in to see those coming in.
The first time I came in, I waited 4 hours because someone had a cardiac arrest and that doctor left to take care of them. Great job for taking care of the Patient in critical danger, but bad on them for not having someone else in to keep the rest of the patients seen.
I understand having another doctor on hand ready is costly, but lives are valuable!
And hospitals get paid one way or another, so they need to stop worrying about saving money and focus on hiring the right staff!

YOU know your body better than any doctor , nurse , CNA , caretaker & etc should... so if you don’t feel well... don’t push it under the rug... keep it up here in your head and verbally explain what’s going on , how long it’s been happening , & what kind of pains , aches , soreness whatever... because enable for the doctor to work with what’s going on you have to be precise !

This makes me want to cry. I could tell Tam was trying to hold it together in Part One while reading the news. I am also 25 + went to the ER 2 days before the new year because of on-going chest pain + discomfort. Last year I lost count how many times I've been to the ER + hospital appointments. I've had very frustrating days at the ER as well, knowing that I'm not taken seriously because I'm a Black (and Native) woman. I remember one time, in particular, a white female nurse came into my room + was automatically dismissive of my symptoms + acted as if she knew more about me than me. That day I had my mother with me because I had been to the ER so many times without answers + it's sad that we had to give this woman attitude to let her know that I was serious about my health. Fast forward to this last time I was in the ER, I finally found out what has been causing my chest pain, discomfort + occasional shortness of breath. I was treated the best I've ever been treated by ER doctors + nurses. I literally thought to myself, "did these folk just read an article on Black female fatalities caused by the carelessness of medical professionals?" I am thankful that I got + am getting the help that I need + so so sad that dear Tashonna didn't. side note: I love that Jeannie brought up doulas + the lack of quality perinatal care for Black women because that's exactly why I'm becoming a doula. also, Indigenous women are facing these same struggles. please keep having these conversations, ladies 🙏🏽🧡.

Now a days when I go in to the doctor, I ensure that my doctors SIT DOWN with me. It is also important that we are open & honest with our doctors, no matter how embarrassing. I tell my doctors that I KNOW MY BODY. If they want to run XYZ test, I want to know the results and it be explained to me to the fullest.

I can say that it also depends on your physician as well. I am currently 35 weeks pregnant and I have been under the same physician for 10+ years. During my pregnancy, he has been so thorough and so concerned with my health that it is amazing. Any form of discomfort or ill feeling I have he is adamant about looking into it. I never feel like my symptoms are ignored or down played. He is SO passionate about his patients and it shows.

That's so sad. My daughter passed away in the womb 1 week before her due date. It had nothing to do with doctors being negligent though. My body was suffering from blood clots all on the inside. And the blood clots took over the placenta and prevented food or oxygen from getting to her, is what they told me. So she passed. Its tragic losing your child, so I can def feel your friend's pain to some extent. Wishing her well.

Did you have a little pain in your legs or a leg? Did your legs or feet swell? These are tell tell signs of blood clots, especially while pregnant.

I'm glad they spoke about this topic. I am a RN and black women and know these stats. When I was pregnant with my twins I had extreme anxiety about my pregnancy, giving birth and recovery. I vetted my OBGYN thoroghly and when she retired in the middle of my pregnancy my heart was broken. I was given another doctor in the practice and when I felt like she wasn't a good fit I requestes another. I encourage women to read about pregnancy(from legit sources) and educate yourself. I was lucky enough to have a both a specialist and OBGYN doctor that took me seriously. If your doctor doesn't stand up for you, find ANOTHER or maybe even a nurse midwife. My doctor's where the ones ensuring I had what I needed while at the hospital. It is important to have a healthcare provider you have a report with. If someone else delivers you and you don't feel like you are being heard ask for your doctor or someone for there practice. Nurse isn't hearing you ask for the charge nurse or a different nurse. Most hospitals have patient advocates request one if you are having issues.

It’s IMPORTANT to always make the medical professionals attending you aware of what you feel. Even if you think it’s minor, it can make a difference. Ask questions, never think you’re asking a stupid question, most patients going into a hospital or clinic don’t have medical knowledge, and even the ones that do, might not know certain things. Don’t feel embarrassed to say what is going on, and if they don’t pay attention to you when you’re in pain, yes, make noise and let them know you’re in pain. Go with a friend or family member because they can tell the medical professionals things you might have missed. If you don’t understand something, don’t be afraid to ask. Your health is important!

You out of all people in the world out of 7.5 billion people know your body well! Don’t let anybody tell you differently. EVER! Ask to be seen by another physician and if not an emergency change to another clinic people trust me. Doctors are like lawyers the world has a bunch but only a few good ones.

I am so GLAD that this was a topic. I know too many occasions where this has happened to my family and friends. It really is fustrating and it feels helpless cause you walk away with nothing knowing something is wrong but you can't do nothing but take the doctor's word and pay an expensive bill. Now I'm educated on something and God forbid this happens to a love one but just incase I'm aware of what I am suppose to do. Thank you for this conversation

I’m a Hispanic woman and just two weeks ago went into the ER for chest pain and asthma. I was told to wait. I told them I needed someone immediately, they took my vitals and had me wait for close to two hours. I had to drive myself to another hospital. To this day, I know I made it by the grace of God because there is no other explanation. The valet at the second hospital knew something was wrong. I went into the ER and saw a doctor within minutes. It’s ridiculous that this has to happen. I know if I would’ve waited at the first hospital, I would not be here to tell the story. Bringing someone with me may have helped me in this situation. Don’t let anyone, professional or not, tell you you’re “fine” when you clearly know yourself and know you are not. Thank you ladies for this awareness. It’s so disheartening that it has to be due to these biased situations. Prayers and love to all that have been impacted negatively.

I work in an ER and our wait time unfortunately gets up to 10 sometimes even 12 hours on a "okay" day. I really feel bad for people waiting but alot of it is miseducation about what's an "emergency" and can be a doctor's visit. Thankfully the hospital I work for is a pediatrics, cardiac and stroke center so when a patient walks in saying the golden words we take immediate action. I'm just a tech but if something doesn't look right I speak up no matter what.

I work in a hospital and deal with ER patients. Sadly, i see those nurses who roll their eyes at patients when they are in pain. I personally just can’t be that type of person to just shrug off anybody who isn’t feeling well. I take it very serious. And if i do their exam and don’t see anything worth noting as a concern, i feel like I’m failing at detecting their problem. If you don’t have a heart, you shouldn’t be in the medical field PERIOD
