Joachim Murat, King of Naples, was one of Napoleon's Marshals, and perhaps the man he trusted the most. He was the man Napoleon entrusted with the Grande Armee after he left for Paris at the end of his retreat from Leipzig. Before Napoleon left, Murat pledged his eternal loyalty to Napoleon, but immediately abandoned his post and fled back to Naples. He joined the Coalition against Napoleon soon after. This was the last time they ever saw each other.

yeah when he asked who that is, that made me pause. If he does not know who that is, after reacting to much of the series now. Look honesty, to me, it makes me believe, they are not really interested in it. Everybody can forget, but its not the first time, where I got the feeling.
They say all the time "let us know down in the comments", but then people explain it & they ask the same question again in the next video....

Marshal Murat's nicknamed the "Dandy King" due to his dashing and flamboyant personality was probably the Napoleonic wars' finest cavalry commander under Napoleon was at the time half heartily supporting the sixth coalition against his old boss to try to kept his throne.

if you are interested in more historical personalities such as Napoleon, i would heavily recommend watching a documentary series on Caesar. Hannibal and Alexander the Great are also interesting. However in these cases i would heavily advise you to search for a documentary series which not only covers the warfare-side of things ( or singular battles ) but also the political and culture side of things, especially in the case of Caesar roman politic and culture adds A LOT to the whole story!

You're not quite done with Napoleon, even after Waterloo. You still have the Epic History series about Napoleon's marshals to do. I know you'll enjoy that because you are always so interested in who these people were. As for another figure in history who compares, I would have to say Alexander the Great, whom Epic history also do a fantastic series on. The other guys on your channel already have that covered though.

There are 2 aspects of Napoleon which make him important and interesting. First there is obviously his military genius, well described in this series, but he will also be remembered as a great reformist. Most of French institutions remain from his direct legacy : the Sénat, Bank of France, Civil Code, France modern map with division of the territory in departement to put an end to the old aristocratic schemes ( county duchy barony)
, Lycée (highschool), Ecole Polytechnique (kind of a prestigious university) and plenty others things

It's hard to know if you have ancestors who lived through this kind of battles or not
I live in Paris and here we have the biggest collector in the world of objects that belonged to Napoleon, he buys absolutely everything that belonged to the emperor and he does this for years
He appears from time to time on TV and you can also meet him if you are part of those who can afford to live in the richest areas of Paris
And unlike many collectors who usually keep their collections in glass and never touch them, he makes them "live", I even had the chance to meet him in an auction and he wears a very special ring, a ruby of 5.33 carats that the emperor wore at his coronation in 1804
It's just crazy ... and at the same time it's a good thing thanks to him a big part of this priceless collection remains in France

Honestly, we have so many ancestors past a certain number of generations (2^x ancestors with x the numbers of generations, so 10 generations ago it means 1024 people lol), that I think it's probable a large part of the European population nowadays have at least one ancestor involved in the battles.
And considering most white people worldwide lived in Europe at the time (America was only sparsely populated), as the great migrations still didn't happen, those two in Chicago probably have as much chance as any European to have ancestors involved, too.

Talking about Napoleon always knowing which routes his enemies were going to take and how fast they could move, it's significant that he was a graduate of the best school in France before the revolution, which was France's military academy. In particular that he trained as an artillery officer. So he got the best logistics education, and he had to be very good at maths for being able to use artillery accurately. So he automatically knew how quickly or slowly armies had to move, and what roads they would have to take that could handle the traffic and were well enough paved. And he understood about supply lines, and in the absence of supply lines, how hungry the enemy would get living off the land, or how slowly they would have to move for supply wagons to keep up with them.
It's characteristic that he was still winning battles until near the end, but his army was ground down anyway. His enemies used attrition against him, knowing that they had overwhelming numbers, even if Napoleon could defeat each division seprately. Early in his career the attrition had been working in his favour, because he had the most men when France was using conscription and no-one else was, and when he hadn't made enemies out of everybody yet.

Napoleon was an hero for the new Europe, if the English had stopped declaring war on France well away on their island, Europe would have been much more developed today and the European union would have existed during the XIXth century, there wouldn't have been the first world war and neither would the second. And there wouldn't have been the USSR either. England is responsible for the millions of deaths that followed Napoleon's defeat.

    • @generaladvance5812

Ask the people of Spain, Portugal, Belgium & others if Napoleon was a hero. He was a tyrant and England helped liberate Europe from his clutches. If France had kept to it's own borders England wouldn't have had to come sort it out. But that's generally how it works, that Europe collectively shits the bed yet again & the Brits have to come clean up the mess.

    • @Sperenza2b

For Russia, Poland, Italy and France Napoleon is an hero.
England has always paid other nations to wage its wars against France or against Germany. the English only know how to fight against unarmed natives than against European armies.
The Spaniards finally regret subsequently having made war against Napoleon who brought a modern constitution and who would develop Spain. The massacres in Spain are due to England sending arms to the rebels.
England has always fomented wars between peoples in Europe so that it remains economically dominant to the detriment of the populations.
The first French empire brought freedom to the people and a better standard of living against the tyrant kings supported by English gold

    • @generaladvance5812
      @generaladvance5812 2 роки тому

@@Sperenza2b Uh huh, and Spaniards would disagree. Some historians estimate Spanish deaths at half a million during Napoleons occupation. The fact that you try and make out he had a positive influence in Spain is one of the most gormless takes on history I've ever heard. Writing the Spanish partisans off as 'rebels' when they were resisting Napoleons invasion & occupation tells me all I need to know about you.
Not everything Napoleon did was bad when you look at it objectively but this weird mindset you have where Napoleon is jesus come again and England is some pantomime villian is pretty pathetic. I'd imagine you're a teenager who get's their history lessons from reddit. Grow the fuck up.

Napoleon is a ambiguous figure. People might talk about him as a hero or, as you said "an evil genius" but unlike Hitler or Stalin or even Gengis Kaan. Pretty much no one in France would refer to him as evil. Some will tryy to have a more clear vision on what he id good and what he did bad, but he's still reconised in France as an important figure (not in a bad way)

I'm from austria but do not know if any ancestors fought in the napoleonic wars. it is likely, but given the situation that the austrian empire back then did not conscript many austrians, who were the officers and higher ranks in the army, but rather from other parts of the empire, like hungarians and czechs, romanians, poles, ukranians, croats, ... makes it hard to answer

"Evil" is relative, but there were a lot of military geniuses accross history. While Napoleon has the most recorded battles, it's mostly because he's the most recent, coming from a time where all were meticulously recorded. among ther geinuses, you could go from Alexander to Ceasar, from Aggrippa to Hannibal, from Bellisarius to Yi, and a lot of others whose name only could make their ennemies tremble

I loathe the British to this day. Britain throughout history fought every major attempt of reform, liberty, democracy and republicanism brought forth by the American and French revolutions. I really really wish napoleon had invaded Britain. The British could only rule the sea but they had one and only land army, that commended by Wellington, no match for the grande armée under napoleon, although at that point comprised mostly of fresh conscripts, the brits weren't really into the thick of the fighting, they only had other European nations fighting on their behalf, after being given vacant promises of intervention in the continent along with copious amounts of money, but blunders in Spain and especially in Russia, miscalculations, ill-fated political measures, treachery and incompetent generals sealed napoleon's empire's fate. Napoleon was undoubtedly a brilliant general, but he was a disastrous politician, appointing his friends and relatives at the head of foreign states only added to his misfortunes. He was engulfed with arrogance, so disconnected from reality that he refused to bargain to save his shaken empire, thinking he still had the means to take on the coalition forces.

I would say Napoleon is similar to Alexander. Not many more are like him. You're right, he just didn't care. Unrestrained genius and boldness where normal people thought about practicality and tradition. Took on and defeated entrenched medieval monarchy families, upended the world order without caring. It would be like if Elon Musk had an army and defeated the US government, the Chinese, and the EU, and made them sue for peace, walking his troops by the Lincoln memorial in DC as a symbol of his victory. It's that level of world economic power he defeated.

A handful of generals (excluding admirals) are on Napoleon's level. Alexander the Great is the greatest military general of all time, Epic History TV have a series on him. Julius Caesar and Hannibal Barca are probably greater military minds too, but it's a toss up between these guys really.
You have a whole host of generals that are near to Napoleon's level: Philip of Macedon, Turenne, Gustavus, Frederick the Great, Scipio Africanus, Eugene of Savoy, the Duke of Marlborough, Genghis Khan, Subutai, Timur, Nader Shah, Oda Nobunaga, Pyrrhus of Epirus, Suvurov, Wellington etc.

@@shakya00 Nah he's not. Alexander is. That list is flawed, because it doesn't take into account things like grand strategy, manoeuvre, logistics etc. which are a part of being a great general. No way Wellington is a top 3 general of all time. He isn't even clearly the best *British* general (Marlborough can be argued as better), let alone top 3 of all time.
      Top 4 are:
      1) Alexander
      2-4) Caesar, Hannibal, Napoleon.
You can argue the 2-4 spots either way, so it's a bit of a toss up, but no-one beats Alexander imo. Napoleon's got some of the highest highs of any general, but also some of the lowest lows (none of Alexander, Caesar or Hannibal were responsible for a catastrophe as bad as Napoleon's Russia failure).

War Thunder is legit like one of my favorite games. It gets to be annoying occasionally, and has a bit of like a learning curve but it’s pretty fun for the most part in my opinion.

    BLACKPINK REACTION PLS.
    REASONS IS:
OUT OF ALL THE PEOPLE WHO ARE REACTING TO BLACKPINK OR ANY GROUP/ARTISTS. THIS CHANNEL CONTAINS HISTORY AND VERY DEEP DISCUSSIONS. SO I THINK IT BENEFITS YOU (THE REACTORS) ON THE SETTING OF THE MUSIC VIDEOS OF BLACKPINK BECAUSE SOME OF THEIR MV HAS MEANING AND SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES. SO I THINK YOU WILL DO GOOD ON REACTING TO THEM BECAUSE THE FIRST REACTION YOU MADE IS THE MOST UNIQUE ONE I'VE WATCHED. YOU ARE NOT (WOWED) BY IT BUT, YOU APPRECIATE THEM AND OVERTIME, I HOPE YOU WILL KNOW WHO THEY REALLY ARE AS INDIVIDULAS SO PLS REACT TO THEM ATLEAST TWICE OR ONCE A WEEK HEHE. ♥️
