    Honestly one of the most chilling moments in the series. No, these are not misunderstood humans who just happen to be wearing horns. This is a truly monstrous species that only mimics human appearance and speech as both a survival mechanism and a hunting tool. They are “inhuman” in the truest definition of the word, which makes them actually kind of unnerving as a species

    There's something so chilling about this depiction of demons as a race of almost entirely apathetic creatures who know how to manipulate feelings with words but are incapable of such feelings themselves, and such concepts as "family" and "love" are so alien to them that they can't even hope to fully understand what they are beyond using them as a means to an end. The flashback this clip comes from only adds to that. It leads us to believe that redemption is possible for this demon through a brief montage only to pull the rug out from under us by showing the horrific aftermath, confirming Frieren was right to be suspicious and untrusting of the demon because of what the elf mage knew about her kind.

    • @MasterOfTruck

Flamme herself gave the term "demon" to any trickster monster that was capable of such a high degree of mimicry and cunning. They are not made of pure evil, they are just a predatory species that feeds on humanlikes, they have done this for thousands of years and even with a society of their own they are still a hunter at the end of the day. You can be empathic with them to a degree(eating humans is their nature) but they wont be with you, you may negotiate but you are just feeding them more, there is no parlay or truce, just tribute.

    I love that we finally have an anime that takes demon's and doesn't try to make them either secretly good or misunderstood.
    It's tragic that they literally are incapable of empathy. But it makes it clear that it's no excuse for the evil they commit, and that it really has to be on sight with them, otherwise they will use your own empathy against you.
    Really, this entire show I think is about empathy and the connections you make with others. This is best exemplified by Frieren. She, an elf, will outlive all of her friends multiple times over. This can leave her disconnected from humanity and to someone not paying attention, no different from the demon's she fights against. But we see multiple times that Frieren has empathy for other creatures, she is able to form genuine connections with others, even if she doesn't fully understand them. When the wait of all the time she lost with her friends hits her, it breaks her. But the demons would never feel that. It cannot make those connections, nor can it understand why others do. It will never have that moment of realization, that genuine grief at those it has lost. Because it physically can't.

    Most of the flashbacks to Frieren's time in the Heroes' Party involves someone else, usually Himmel, teaching her something that she wouldn't internalize until many decades later. Something about human nature, such as the desire to be remembered or the inherent appeal of heaven. What we get here is a rare instance of Frieren teaching Himmel something - and, appropriate to her name, it is a cold truth. Frieren knew the answer to the question she asked the demon child, she'd known it for centuries. She asked the question for the benefit of everyone else there, especially her party and ESPECIALLY Himmel. He needed to know that the world he lived in was populated by true, genuine evil - because when the party finally faced the Demon King, he had to be resolved. No regrets, no hypotheticals, no hesitation. Every part of him had to know that killing the Demon King was the way it had to be, and that that was not a tragedy.

These creatures know only killing, domination, and manipulation, they can’t understand let alone comprehend “family” “kindness” “malice” and even those that do want to understand such concepts can’t do so without killing people because it’s the only thing they know how to do. They are deeply flawed and tragic creatures doomed to extinction due to their lack human compatibility and arrogance. For example the "original sin" with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden was a conscious choice to give into temptation even without having any pressure or need to make that choice (they literally lived in paradise without any wants), yet they still did it.
      The Bible's teaching is that evil always comes from within ourselves regardless of our past, so it's important to always fight it. Example of King David who is the war hero that beat Goliath, but then later as King took his loyal soldier's wife and sent him to die which is a horrific sin. Popular culture however implies that evil is never your fault, but the fault of some external force that's making you do bad.

    I wish sci-fi would treat robots and aliens the same way. Something human in abilities and appearance but incomprehensible. The closest I've seen is "Yuki Nagoto" from haruhi suzumiya.

    This is how demons should always be portrayed. Not the singing Hazbin Hotel redeemers, not the tragic warrior race of the 7 Deadly Sins, not the utopian soceity of royals from Killing Slimes for 300 years and maxed out my level. Demons are literally fallen angels, the only 'good demons' are angels.

    I have to ask, are we meant to feel sympathy for demons? Yeah, I get it, monsters who have to be exterminated, us or them, yadda yadda yadda. I understand demons are incapable of things like empathy and that cannot change, but at the same time, that kind of makes them pitiable imo. Because they literally can't understand such things on a personal level, even if it is understood on a conceptional level. That's all it is, a concept. Idk it just seems kind of sad.

    • @Nordicsz
      @Nordicsz Рік тому +29

      The whole show is about emotions. Look at Frieren, most people will think she does not have any emotional feelings if they just watch a clip. But now you take that demon and place it next to her and she turns very human. Both demons and Frieren mindlessly research magic. Both Frieren and demons live long lives. Both are pretty lonely. Yet Frieren is human inside.
      I guess the anime hasn't made it clear yet, but it is about Frieren becoming more in tune with her emotions, and how despite being similar to long living demons, she is different.

    • @Sirin2099
      @Sirin2099 Рік тому +26

      Congratulations you are human, we feel empathy and have the need to humanize everything. Look at people with wild animals, inanimate objects, and even scripted AI. There was an experiment where they told people to turn off a robot, everyone did it as expected. Then they added voice lines to the robot which begged them "No! Please do not switch me off! I am scared that I won't turn on again!" Half the people hesistated to turn off the robot and a quarter of them refused to turn off the robot. It wasn't alive but the doubt created by the words cause people to hestitate and even outright refuse. Yes, we feel but should we feel for every and anything even when it's most dangerous to us? That is the concept we do need to take into consideration.

      They're displayed in a way the perfectly tricks the viewers at first, then crushes it. It's meant to show how easy it is for humans to be tricked simply by throwing out some words and some random movements.
