    Talking of filming locations, The Lamb Tavern in LM appears in Brannigan (1975), a unique Police Procedural in which John Wayne comes to London and basically spends 2hrs in an episode of The Sweeney. Big Leggy orchestrates a pub brawl akin to a Western there, for reasons of the plot, and even old Dickie Attenborough gets in on the action.
    Best bit is when Duke says to an Uncle Albert from Only Fools lookalike "Hey Sailor, How's the second best Navy in the world" to which he replies "You should know".

    Many years ago, probably late ‘70s, I was walking past it one Sunday morning when I met somebody who I had been at school with. He worked as an electrician in the film industry. Some production was being shot there, there was a huge crew, generators, catering vehicles, costume and make-up facilities, Carbon arc brutes, and everything else which goes with a major film shoot; surely to must have been for some great epic, I asked my electrician who told me that it was an advert for, if I remember correctly, beer.

      The arcades remaining in the US are definitely more interesting than our shopping malls! Cleveland has several really great ones that managed to avoid the "modernization" of the mid-20th century that turned most into much more standard looking office buildings.

    As a young boy, I found arcades to be exciting. Although I wasn't doing the spending, that was mum's
    department. But I felt the clients were getting more for their money. There seemed to be a buzz in
    the air, laughter and high spirits. Even today, all these years later, if I'm in a different locale, it's the
    arcade that seems to beckon me. I've only seen Leadenhall Market on your UA-cam programs Jago,

    I used to love going through Leadenhall market before and just after the revamp in in 1990, on my walk to Sir John Cass primary school (recently reanamed Aldgate School). Back then pretty much all the shops were market or specialist shops, my favourite being the green grocer because it sold all sorts of exotic fruits that my mum would by for me to try, I also remember passing the butchers where the meat was hung on the rack with the heads still on which I found quite disturbing as a 5 - 11 year old but it gave me a more realistic idea of where meat came from and to respect my food. Sadly this as well as many of the others have gone and have been replaced with 'high street chain' shops and bars. There are a few still there though. I must admit I did prefer it before it was revamped though, but that is probably nostalgia.

    In the seventies I was a broker at Lloyd's. My office was in Gracechurch Street with a back door into the market and it was my route to Lloyd's in Lime Street. In those days Leadenhall Market was very much a poultry, meat and cheese market and much less the tourist attraction and shopping area it's become. A beautiful part of the old city though and you could drink a pint of Young's Special on the pavement outside The Lamb. In those days the city floated on a sea of drink. Thankfully no longer, I gather.

      I'm another non-resident who visits quite often and this was one of my favorite "discoveries" a few years back. It's just a beautiful place, simple as that. When you do get a chance to go over and check this market out, I would then suggest a short walk north towards Liverpool Street Station. Directly across from the station (turn down Middlesex St or Artillery Ln when you get there) is a great area of narrow alleys and pubs which have somehow survived all the redevelopment surrounding it. Fun little neighborhood and easy to forget that you're in the heart of all those towers.

    Why can’t city designers create more Leadenhalls? Is it really so hard to create beauty and magic in everyday life?

    • @beepbeepcasucha
      @beepbeepcasucha 3 роки тому +7

      I think part of the magic is in the older materials used for construction, you know, 'brick and mortar'. It's not as cost-efficient to use traditional methods and materials as it used to (plenty modern building materials are lighter in mass, more eco-friendly, don't have effects on lung health etc). The maintenance has also become pricier. Plus, although they're not too risky, in the event of a fire or a collapse, modern materials are easier to lift off of a person.
      There's also the fact that we're going into the era of light, clean, airy spaces that use as much sunlight as possible. I too would like some of that magical, christmassy feeling back, but until we've got a modern red brick, it probably won't be back for some time, if ever.

    • @BadlanderOutsider
      @BadlanderOutsider 3 роки тому +7

      @@beepbeepcasucha Actually that's a misconception. Many buildings made out of traditional materials and using those aesthetics usually come out at a similar or even sometimes cheaper price to those using concrete and glass. It's purely a stylistic choice for the most part. And even if it wasn't, you could still create a modern structure with a more traditional facade.

      This isn't a city planner issue, its a developer issue. In the US, arcades were built and are still owned as a single entity, the same as an office tower or shopping mall. At most it could be a condominium system where you own your unit but pay fees into communal upkeep. There's nothing stopping a modern developer from building these, except the normal arguments you hear about parking, delivery truck access, and the death of pedestrian shopping.

    • @_loss_
      @_loss_ 3 роки тому +7

      @@serovea333 With the techniques we have today you can build a god damn 4d cube aligning with safety standards.
      Its not even more expensive to build in the same kind of style as people did back then, it's just that developers and the people actually paying for the stuff wants something "artistic" and unique in the post modern sense.
      Architecture has always been a dick measuring competition and in this era it means "who can make the weirdest looking shit and cover it in glass".

    I did a bit of Internet Digging, Cannot recall if you mentioned the origins of Leadenhall (yes), As a street it is fairly recent ( about the 1700s), before the roads were extensions of Cornhill and Aldgate Street. Before the remodelling It was somewhat like the wet markets of whuhan - but I suspect less so - as Nearby Billingsgate dealt with fresh fish, and Smithfield the meats, so although one avenue of the market was dedicated to Beef butchers, and another more general provisions like cheese/dairy and poultry I think by the victorian re-modeling there would be more semi-finished items ready for retail or pret a manger. The Wool/Cloth Markets and Leather ones were generally on separate days which would both allow traders to attend other markets in herts surrey and essex 10 or 20 miles hence. Incidentally although Lloyds of London had been in Leadenhall Street their building now is in Lime Street

    Hi Jago. Another great little video and Leadenhall is of one of my favourite places in the City. Back in the day when there were many more butchers and Game dealers around Leadenhall was a sight to behold during the winter months as the butchers would hang all the game and meat up on those metal rails and hooks that are visible outside the shops. Just by looking at the huge amount of ironwork visible gives an idea of how many fresh meat butchers and game dealers were trading in the market. Whilst it has been beautifully restored and is now looking better than at any time I have seen it during the nearly 50 years I have worked in the City it lacks some of the style it had in the past. The butchers boys would stand outside the shops and pluck and clean the poultry and game ready for sale so it was a very visceral experience walking through the market!

    I remember it 50 years ago when I was working at Lloyds, it was still a real food market then, people shopping in their lunch hour. It looks much smarter now, but the shops are not the same.

    Excellent place to share a nice bottle of vino with the other half after a long day’s “Londoning” or to start off a nice evening out! The Lamb is somewhere we can just relax when it is all just too hot upstairs and we’d love to go back. I thought they may have spacing issues 🤔 If so, we will have to content ourselves with the equally nice New Moon for now! 😀
    A feature I like is the various vent shaft caps you can see to the side of the thoroughfares, which were part of the original ventilation to the below ground areas 🤓

    The royal exchange is worth a look around too, perhaps London's first shopping mall though for present shopping in the city the Cheapside area remains strong on retail, Cheap being a word for market and a Chapman was a name for a retailer or market trader.

    Worked in London in late 60s and it was a cheese market. It was a bustling hive of activity with fork lift trucks whizzing about unloading refrigerated lorries discorging huge bulk cheeses the size of oil drums for dispatch to smaller distributors for processing. Took your life in hand on a regular basis avoiding being flatten by huge cheeses being rolled like cable drums down the road!

    It's great to see the crowds returning to this place in a weekday evening after lockdown though sadly I don't think they'll be back for long.
    Looking forward for a vaccine to be found for this blasted virus so the place can make a full time return to the hustle and bustle which makes it such a thriving little corner of London life.

    What I've heard about the name, it is named after a mansion in the area in the 14th century which had a roof made of lead. Leadenhall Street is also called after that mansion.
