Your plan is more convincing than mine in which the French Island of Noirmoutier was "liberated" by the Royal Navy during the French Revolution and Charette who was leading the Vendéen revolt was made Governor and the Island became British. In the 1840’s the GWR decided the island needed a railway system (there was passenger and goods - salt, potatoes and oysters - so they built a railway. Initially, Brunel sold them the atmospheric system and the line joined the mainland French network via a line laid over the tidal causeway "le Gois" to Fromentine. Obviously this was a maintenance and timetabling nightmare because trains to the mainland could only run at low tide, which was also the only "window" for maintenance. So they abandoned it pretty quickly and built a bridge from the southern tip of the island over to Beauvoir sur Mer. The line was taken over by the SNCF during German occupation in WW2 and returned to the GWR, together with a fair amount of SNCF and Deutsche Reichsbahn locomotives and rolling stock in 1945. Upon nationalization it became part of BR Western Region. Through trains run to the continent and even as far as London via the channel tunnel built by the Great Central in the early 20th century.
So there you have it, I can run what I like, even LNER, LMS, and SR holiday trafic 😂, and I have an excuse for a couple of Kreigsloks en salt, potato, oysters, fish and general goods traffic.
Just need to find a justification for one of those lovely Metropolitan tank engines now. Thinks……

Great video, and a beautiful model. An interesting thing to note is that Met No.1/LT L.44 was not originally meant to be preserved. The goal of the Met Tank Appeal Fund was to preserve former Met F Class L.52, an 0-6-2. When the fund was ready to hand over the money to LT they were informed an inspection had revealed cracked frames so L.52 was to be scrapped. The fund was therefore offered L.44 instead. And the rest is history.

    Well done Jago!
I suspect we are all fellow travellers to some degree!
I am modelling in N Gauge, (right little buggers to maintain!) and the only restriction I place upon myself is all my loco's are era specific around the mid to late 1960's, so I can just about squeeze in steam with diesels and a very rare BR blue DMU. But as another person commented, Rule Number One is it's your layout, you run what pleases you!
I have a 1938 stock train on order and I'm going to build a layout model of Archway Station to run it!

Hello Jago, that is a very nice loco (L44), I’m envious. I too have been spending a bit of the pocket money only mine is on N gauge and German, K Bay Sts Bahn (Royal Bavarian State Rly). A small but beautifully marked 0-8-0 GtL 4/4 tank engine Nr. 2557 in lined (white) and green (Fleishmann 7160012) DC control. It was a bit of a shock how small it is being 2mm/ft as I have been recently getting live steam 7/8”/ft narrow gauge 610mm (2ft) gauge) running 45mm track (LGB). Jago, it’s your railway and the general rule is “ if you like it then that’s ok.” Hopefully we will get to see the Hazzard’s Alternative History of the East London Line. Best wishes from the little Bavarian State in Oxfordshire. 🇩🇪🇬🇧

I had an extensive N-scale model railway but I no longer have the space or budget for it. I am now modeling virtually. This has its advantages and disadvantages but it's still a way to escape from the real world and do as I wish. For me 1971 was the year, not only did I see the last working steam train run through platform 3 at London Bridge to run into Cannon St then run out again and after seeing her run down again having been turned on the Borough Market triangle, my father took me into Tooley St signalbox for a tea mumping special as he wasn't paying Traveller's Fare prices even with "SP" or staff prices when over the footbridge was a nirvana to free endless teas and me father was buttering his bread a little because he was hoping for a chair at Tooley St signalbox but alas didn't get one with the closure after the big power box was built. The second event of the year was standing Baker St with the old man to watch LT's Pannier tank run some coaching round and about the place but those were two very iconic memories few would remember today, the London Bridge run was the last time a steam loco could run because of the insane tight pathing that made even more insanely tight in the later 70's to give the Charing Cross side of things more space and capacity as Cannon St side was seen as "second class" in that regard lol

Excellent choice Jago! Beautiful loco. I have one myself and she really looks the part. I built a rake of Radley’s dreadnoughts a few years back, which turned out reasonably acceptable, so should look great behind Met 1. I think it is great that some model companies have taken the plunge and made some Underground/London Transport models. The number of people I’ve heard of buying Heljan’s “Sarah Siddons” style electric locos and saying, “well it doesn’t go with anything I’ve got but it looks beautiful” illustrates the point that if you really like a model - get it! It’s your little world that you’re creating and why should someone else’s opinion about the “wrong roof vents” matter? Enjoy! The great thing about the Met 1 model, particularly in the current livery she’s in is that you could literally put anything behind her; BR mk1s, Bulleid because the real loco could end up on a rail tour or heritage railway with anything behind her! Let your imagination and artistic skill run wild. Which I guess is kind of the point! 🤣

Bending the rules and warping time is called modellers' licence. My licence is broad enough to explain the presence of all 3 generations of Met electric locos (the one you show at 2.32 is 3rd generation), District box cabs, Southern and LNER electric locos at the same time, in the same place by imagining a direct connection between the East London Line and the Mtropolitan Widened Lines. BTW if you get an attack of the rivet counters, they can be fended off by whispering MFR at them.

Dreadnoughts make me wonder whether I’m listening to Drachinfel videos rather than Jago Hazzard. Maybe a crossover video would be possible? Any Tube lines with a strong connection with naval history?

Funny enough, one of the "Orion"-class battleships, HMS Thunderer, was built in Poplar in 1913; it was the last battleship, and one of the last major warships, to be built on the Thames.

I may have been on a metropolitan coach last weekend. It was running on the Keighley and worth valley railway and had a map of metroland in it (I know very little about old rolling stock so I may be totally wrong)

Wait, Coldhaven? As in Michael Spicer's Coldhaven?
Anyway, I've always liked your model railway stuff almost as much as your 1:1 scale real train stuff. I'd love to see more of the layout, and I'm glad you don't take realism super seriously. Personally, I think that takes a good bit of the fun out.

Ive got 4 harrow model company dreadnought carriages, but because they are mostly white metal, my L44 won't pull them! I might experiment with more weight in the boiler if there's room!

Your Farish coaches are honestly your best option at the moment. CDC design coaches are good structurally, but the paint jobs are absolutely awful and not worth the high prices. One can only hope someone like Rapido can make us some nice coaches to go with No.1

One always has licence with a model railway layout, I had SR electric suburban stock and The Brighton Belle Pullman running alongside LMR steam hauled. Became a dab hand at making buildings from cornflake packets and Balsa wood along with spraying course sand a dirty grey as ballast adding the odd brown and white streaks. Dad told everyone it was his, they knew he was lying as only on leave about once every 9 to 15 months.

    "Coldhaven?"
Jago, you just invented a _setting._ It sounds like Dracula is back in London during the Interwar period, up to his usual nonsense. An elderly Seward is in no condition to fight him anymore, but another team of international heroes is convened: I'm picturing a beautiful, buxom Scandanavian rural girl who's astonishingly well-read for a farm girl who can bench-press an ox, a young Tommy home on leave, an older German Jewish former army officer now ex-pat who prefers a monarchy to what's going on in Germany, a Brazilian merchant of furs and animals used to long and arduous hunts, an American doctor on the run from the Pinkertons because he had an affair with a wealthy heiress, and the daughter of a lifelong railway engineer who knows more about the rails than _Bradshaw's_ and yearns to work on the railways herself in an age when that's essentially an utter impossibility.
Bonus antagonists: the Pinkerton Agency! Turns out they'll work for anyone, even literal Dracula, if their money is good.

The benefit of having a model train layout is that you CAN do whatever you want, and if someone doesn't like it, well, they can build their own layout. When I was about 10 yo, I had an HO layout with an auto racetrack inside it. My friends and I had a great time racing our sports cars while the trains went by.
