Anyone who likes this should check out out Isao Tomita's version of The Planets. Isao Tomita from Japan was a pioneer in synthesizer music and has "covered" many classical pieces in astounding ways.
@@rupertthecat875 I understand that but in my opinion the quality of Wakeman's work is on a level equal to Tomita. When it comes to subjective judgments it should be made clear that it's an opinion. So often I see arguments about who is the greatest guitar player. Such things cannot be quantified so those discussions are an act in futility but the people arguing act like their opinions are truths. Are the discussions fun? Yes, but in the end a final consensus is impossible. What I like about Wakeman is despite being a highly technically proficient keyboardist he always played with restraint. That is why so many people used him as a session player. There is a video on UA-cam discussing a well known piano part on a famous song. The producer said they originally hired Keith Emerson but his piano part was excessively complex for the song so they didn't use it. Emerson was brilliant and a technical monster but he seemed to lack the discipline needed in some situations.
Wow I have seen the cover to this cd before but this is the very first time to hear this Amazing music - I will have to get this one and add it to my other 81 cds I own from the most amazing musician I have ever heard in my life - Keep up the Amazing work Rick - PS. would to see you perform once again up here in Vancouver BC Canada :o)
WOW !!! what a surprise !! holtz the planets 1914 .. the first classic prog composer !! a true visionnary incredible ... thank you mr W. i hope you feel well !!

I remember buying this when it was originally released. And while you can't knock the musicianship, I was and still am underwhelmed by this project. It just lacked a certain oomph!!!!
I really dislike the sound of those drums, an acoustic drum set would have bring this so much more power, this is a really wonderful and powerful sounding suite in its original version, I love the fact the actually tried to bring a new sound to this, but maybe being a classical musician I’m really having a hard time listening to this even though I’m a huge Wakeman fan
'80s digital synth just weren't quite ready to do this justice, I think. They brought us lots of interesting new sounds, but it took another decade to get those sounds to really *sing*. Just not enough dynamic expression in any of the parts.
I can picture a performance art play to some of these pieces; like rocky horror picture show but instrumental dance and light show. I guess that occurred to me from back in the day doing stage sets for theater and the hours of solitude delving into the Ensonic keyboard samples following the emotions of music being a bit stoned, which this reminds me of. lol I love the arrangements and use of horns in just the right accompaniment. Serenity
"World In Union " was used at one point, the first time I heard this tune was in a 1990's Rugby Union World Cup. Where did this theme originate from? Fantastic album
Such an awesome album - still have the Vinyl version of this album. So happy to have found a version on youtube. Love this Rick! An inspiring album which I listened throughout my teenage years! Thanks for the memories!
Surprised at Rick doing this. It hasn't improved what Holst achieved one iota. Bach can be modernized but not Holst, this simply doesn't work. But I'm sure Rick's heart was in the right place when he conceived it. Big fan.
There was already an electronic cover of The Planets done by Isao Tomita which sounds much like this, but was released in 1976. I mean, I'll buy this album because I respect Rick, but I was hoping for something more than a rehash of what has already been done.
I've always wanted to hear a sonic the hedgehog esque midi version of Holst's Planets. Today I did and it was marvellous.
They should have used this version of Holst's Mars for Blakes Seven but of course it didn't exist back then yet...
Yowza. A "Rock interpretation" that manages to be less rock than the original classical rendition. Pure 80s synth schlock.

thanks for Tomita suggestion. It is totally briiliant - much better than anything Wakeman ever did!
@@rupertthecat875 Wakeman's body of work surpasses Tomita's.

This was a Kevin Peek project. Rick appeared as a guest artist.

The red planet 2020 is an cool reactualisation 👍
Excellent interpretation of one of the great classical suites.
Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler were influence by the original recording of "Mars" .
:-D
Some of the sounds are dated and make this sound 80ish, but overall it is fabulous Wakeman genius.

Yes the sounds are dated, my first impression was that it sounds like the 80s, course the second part just started and it is better.
So Cool, So Unique. Why am I just hearing this in 2022? My fault, time to search out some other Rick Wakeman gems to make up for it.

I'm a fan of Rick Wakeman, since knowing Album no earthly connection, musician Rick is a genius in his ability to play music. amazing and i love it
Love the planet suite. love the interpretation.
Every song has its vibe, like the planets themselves....

One of the great works of art. Gustav Holtz... Rick does everything justice. The arrangements are great... Homage & Creativity.

@Nick Martin Thanks could you spread the word about this please. Blood Cancer patients in UK need help bloodcancer.eaction.org.uk/shielding/search
Lovely.
wasnt all Rick.. Rick only features in 3 of the tracks.
Pete Marr it doesn’t claim to be all Rick’s work. The description of the video lists all the composers.
If you click the little drop down arrow next to the title it lists all the info.
Great stuff best for years

This is so bad it's hilarious, I'm crying while I'm typing.
Holst turned into elevator music - awful.
