This Man Turned a Car Into a Motorbike to Escape the Desert

- In one of his many road trips to Morocco, Emile Leray (nicknamed the “Doctor of African Mechanics” by his friends) hit a roadblock ... literally. Well, actually it was a rock in the middle of the desert, but you get the idea. With his car’s front axel destroyed and a limited food supply, Leray faced an uncertain future. So what did he do? Engineered the ultimate DIY escape.

The fact that he even took pictures made him a lot more confident that he'll be able to make it.
Or he could have taken pictures in case he dies
he told in some interview that ''Absolutely i could have walked back, but not that easily. Some areas along the unmetalled road were guerilla dominated. It was too dangerous to walk as they could spot me along their borders''

He is old geezer
The story is fake. Not a single video showing how he was able to ride and control the bike. Myth Busters tried and failed to fully replicate this thing in a way where it was controllable faster than an average man's walking speed, and even then the rider would have to get off and push the heavy machine back on course.

What was missing in this video, was of Emile Leray driving it down the road, to prove that it works.
what season/episode?
Pete Schemberger yeah they aren’t the best with mechanical engineering but he bigger flaw is that they didn’t spend 12 days trouble shooting it. They just kinda did what they first thought of and if that didn’t work then obviously it’s busted.
@Pete Schemberger Yeah the myth busters are entertaining but generally suck at actually testing myths when you really think about it.

They also could not inflate a tire with starting fluid and the guy who helped me do it said he does it all the time. He was half angel and half Arab though. Also said he worked at a tire shop as a kid in Lebanon though.
20 miles is not even far, walkable in one night. Plus he had plenty of supplies to stay alive with him. Look up the German guys who walked 70 miles out of the Manitoba wilderness after their canoe sank. Bog walking is waaay harder than across the desert.
Great point, I agree. Sounds like alot of work to do in the desert. Alone

ForestyForest but he has a badass motorcycle.
That’s why I’m not proud to be moroccan, instead of congratulating the man about his escape they freakin fined him when they dont even wear helmets on their police/ military motorcycles themselves.
If he had enough water to stay alive and work for 12 days, he could have rather spent a day or two walking and easily covered 20 miles.
Jordan TheMan yea but he would have to keep carrying that and it would be heavy so it would slow him down and if he went at night he would freeze
Also if you had the skills and materials to build a motorcycle would you do it or would you rather die and there were also sandstorms out there and he probably wasn’t even aware of how far he was from the town
Jordan TheMan but where’s the fun in that? 😉
it's because this story is made up, unless you want to believe he was welding steel together with his lazer eyes.

If he chooses to make his airplane, I wish him every success!

Wait he was only 20 miles out so he spent almost two weeks working on a car? You could easily walk 20 miles in 2 or 3 days.
Wilson Solt could walk that in like 8 hrs
Wilson Solt Or you could run and make it in a day.
I've walked 20 miles before on a march thing whatever it took me 3 hours to walk no running at all.
If you have 14 days worth of food, and It will take you 2 days to travel 20 miles then you can spend 12 days creating a motorbike... If it fails then just walk.
Actaully it doesn't take 2 days, I've done the 20 miles walk before and it took 3 hours.
Great Scott’s!
Macgyver:Finally a worthy opponent. Our battle will be legendary
Supplies for 12 days, tools to rebuild his car completely and he documented it. A little questionable. He was only a few kilometers from the checkpoint and 2 or 3 days from a city. Nice story with a cool prop.
Ok then prove it please go into the desert 20 kilometers from civilization and walk back to a village
StruckOne 20 km would take you about 4-5 hours, here in the Netherlands there's an event every year in which people walk 50 kilometers a day, four days in a row

JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Not everyone has a fucking camel, and a lot of them use the camel to hold their supplies and walk beside it.
Go to fucking school you idio-tard
Firestarter then, the supplies are used to keep them hidrated, its almost as the same as riding a camel
Chikh8n no it is not. Walking is very different from letting an animal tote you around. One uses little to no energy, and the other requires quite a bit.
Riding a motorcycle, especially one that heavy and unbalanced requires a ton of energy to balance and steer, which is further compounded by the extremely slow speed it was capable of.

So, apparently over the years this guy has changed his story quite a bit. In the last interview I saw with him, he said the city was only 10 miles away. So, he's changing his story as the years go by.
What happened is, he got so much flack from people who said, it would have only taken 5 hours to walk back to the city, but instead he took 12 days to build a motorcycle... I think this is why he's making the distance a bit more, but even then, it's only 20 miles. That's only one day's walk in that environment.
The real story is: He bought this shit motorcycle, then had to come up with a retarded story to hide it from his wife.

Emile Leray: *gets stranded in desert*
Also Emile: "oh ima just build a motorbike out of my car"
This guy is like an irl version of those crazy mechanics who work in steam factories in cartoons.
He carried a welding kit, toolset, and all the things necessary to dismount the engine and lift it out to reassemble it into a bike? That's crazy, I like it!
If it was 20 miles to go the next town, why didn't he just walk? Wouldn't that have been faster than spending 12 days in the desert?
oogenshnagen It would also have used up more water and food and put him at far greater risk of heatstroke/sunburn, not to mention the difficulty of carrying around supplies in the desert
and he probably wanted to make it cause he loves citroen
Have you tried to walk 20 miles through the desert? It's not like taking a stroll.
oogenshnagen I walked for 9 km in the gobi desert, took me about 5 hours and 8 litres of water. I think walking would have been faster and safer but not half as fun.
from the photos, this dessert looked quite *easy* to walk, not only sand like the sahara. so i can imagine that walking there would be less hard then in the gobi dessert. (i could be wrong)
man already looks like a mad scientist i bet he can even destroy the whole world using parts from his car
People back then are just built different and I would die out there if I was stranded
He had food&water for 12 days? He could have just walked the 20 miles!
12 days worth of water for desert conditions is not something you can carry while walking
VLPR But you can walk 20 miles in a day or maybe two. And carrying supplies for that time period too. I have never hiked in the desert and I bet it's really hard, but staying there for several days working on the bike must have been equally challenging.
It's a gamble either way. Maybe you overestimate your own walking speed and run out of water halfway through.
With this bike conversion thing you will at least have access to all of the water for maximum amount of time.
And if it looks like you can't do the bike conversion when you have only couple days worth of water left, you can then start walking with the remaining water. There's really no reason to abandon the water.
monamaennchen Morocco is too hot trust me
VLPR Deserts are not hot 24/7, they are surprisingly cold during the night. He could've camped and or slept for the morning, and walk at night.
Google maps calculates 1 day to walk 20 miles. He spent more time building when he could’ve walked.
