my m1 MacBook Air will go when the m6 or m7 comes out
Funny, yeah I hear you on that. M1s are still good machines.
Same here but with m1 max and extremely happy ❤
I’ve got an M1 max and I’m happy with it. So I might well hang on until the M6 comes out - or even later. I’ll wait & see what those later machines can do.
@@Orwic1definitely even when the m6 comes out I’ll probably go for the m3 or m4
My m1 air dose everything I need including video editing I did spec it up though
Not limited with my MBP M1 Pro ❤
I sure hope Apple doesn't repeat the Johnny Ive mistake again, the race to thinner and lighter at the expense of ports, keyboards and adequate cooling. I think Apple has been going the right direction with their M series laptops, and I'm perfectly happy with my "chunky" M3 Pro MBP 14.
Yes it appears they want to make then slightly thinner so we will see what happens. These are rumors right now.
Same here
I am happy with the performance and looks of my MBP M3 Pro.
I am not one who wants or needs the newest model.
The same goes for iPhones. I am currently using a 12 mini. The battery life isn’t the best but it works just fine and slides into my pocket without a problem.
Perhaps we better wait for the m8 or m9, even better, the m11, m12
I'm just reporting and not telling you to buy it. Keep what still works.
what's the point of M5 if the base models come with 8G of Ram, that every additional 8G cost US200 more? don't get me wrong, I love my M1 Macbook Air (16G ram). just I find those ram config & price ridiculous
We need to hope that the Ram is upgraded by then. But you know Apple....
What does the average user do that needs more than 8GB of RAM. Just my opinion, if you're using your laptop for mainly entertainment, school, or basic office task, the base config is more than enough. If you're running a business or you're employer needs that "thing" that's processing to finish as fast as possible so you can move to the next task or some project needs to render and export so you can turn it into a client or meet an upload deadline get a more powerful laptop.
The then again I compile Rust code daily from a M1 MBA with 16 GB of RAM. An entire dev stack, but some people want/have M3 MBPs with 96 GB of RAM to do basic web browsing. You don't need it you likely wont use it.
I have a M3 iMac with 16gb and with it just being on its using 9gb of memory. So they clearly need more than 8. If Apple says different their lying.
@@LibreGlider The average user might play a game every once in a while which would need more than 8GB depending on what background apps are open.
@@SuperReviews4you Wanting to play a game on a Mac automatically makes you not average. Rosetta 2, Metal 2 vs OpenGL, Bootcamp vs native. iOS games, iPad games sideloaded games. Not average at all.
We think its average because we live in this world, normies don't.
I have a MacBook Pro Late 2013 but now I'll be definitely waiting for the M5 since it will most probably have all the major features I actually need. Thanks Craig!
Welcome and I kind of agree but still need to see finished m4s to know for sure. Good luck with everything.
one should keep waiting, keep not doing anything, and keep watching videos instead of using available tools to produce something -- letting the passion die out.
I didn't say that did I. But if you have a computer already like a M1, M2 or M3 then waiting for the M5 is not a bad idea. Funny.
I’m trying to decide if I should by the M3 or wait for the M4 😅
The M4 is coming out later this year but I'm not sure you will notice too much of a difference. If you can get a very good deal then maybe the M3 but if not I would wait.
@@craigneidel will we get "M4 pro" and "max" chips later this year or just the base M4?
@@alyssonpd Do we even know if the M4 Pro/Max MBP's are coming out this year? I'd be less liberal with "we know" claims, especially when dealing with iterations two generations down the road. Still, it's undeniably fun to gaze into tech crystal balls.
wait for the m4 or 5 then buy a higher spec m3
It seems like waiting for the M5 MacBook is a good idea
Maybe for some. It comes down to if you need one now or not.
I don’t have a MacBook at all right now, but thinking about jumping headfirst into the Apple ecosystem after buying the iPad mini. If I find out for sure the m5 will have cellular data, I will definitely wait. I have that in my HP Spectre 360 and it’s a game changer for me. Puzzles me why more laptops don’t have it. They are, after all, mobile devices
Yes, it's a nice feature for sure. Give the Apple ecosystem a try and I think you will like it but give it a month or two to learn it.
We don’t actually know that the m5 will come with a redesign, and we have no idea about its specs. The current design is awesome - no reason to wait.
That is why it's a rumor.
You know your craft really well Sir 😊
Subbed!
I have a question regarding an iPad Pro 12.9” M1…. Im getting a really good deal… should i get it or should i spend extra for M4 iPad pro 13”?
$800 difference..
Thank you. It depends what you are going to do with it. If it was me, based on how I use it, I would save $800 bucks and get the M1. I mean you could also get a M3 MacBook Air 13" for that $800 if you really wanted to so that should answer the question. But if you are a professional that makes money from drawing and other reasons you might need the newest iPad then that could be right.
Macbook pros are not thick, but they are sh*t heavy.
They are heavy for sure...
Happy living with my M3 MBP :) I chose it as an entry point into the Mac ecosystem so I will wait a few gens.
For sure it's a great machine and no need to upgrade past that for many years.
I would love to see Apple redesign the motherboards on the SOC that would allow them to be upgraded. It wont ever happen but it would be nice.
Yes, it would be nice for sure.
I'm still rocking the M1 max haven't been tempted to upgrade yet maybe m7! Apple made these machines so good it's bad for their business😂

Most likely the Shure SM7B one day. I have about 20 mics though that I have tested so maybe one of those also.
@@craigneidel yeah - that's a good one!
what do you mean "if you want a portable macbook pro"? my m1 macbook pro is pretty portable :D
M1 is a great machine. I had one for 2 years.
Outside of gaming competitively with Windows, not much to improve on from the current Pro and Max version. The M1 Max is overkill for video editing, so the M5 does nothing extra but bragging/flex rights and extra warranty years. For programming, the M2-M4 Pro 14-inch should be enough for any programmer for the next 5 years at minimum. Only gaming AAA on release date is needed.
The M4/M5 Air with a full-size SD card reader would be another huge seller. However, the M3 Air with a $20 dongle from BaseUS is sufficient currently.
I agree that nobody should upgrade unless they have a reason. Don't give Apple any more money unless it's needed. Thanks for watching.
As a 3D artist who really wants to leave Windows, I'm eager for the extra performance M5 chips promise to deliver. It's more than just gamers who need more power and speed from macs.
Craig. I am waiting for a possible 27 or 32 inch iMac. Do you think that Apple will skip the M4 chip and bring out a M5 iMac in 2025.
I'm not sure they will come out with this since they make their money on the Studio Displays and the iMacs make up about 5% of all Macs sold if even that (most likely less). So I am not holding me breath.
I decided to get M2 MB Air and wait til next year to get a M4 Mac Studio. I’m done with chunky laptops. If i need real performance then i should be at my desk.
@@jazzmoon77 I agree with that plan .
Thanks for the information
Welcome
I buy a new Mac every 10 years
That's quite long but if it works well then no need to upgrade.
What? Thinning the pro device is a dumb move.
Yeah, it could be.
I still have a MacBook 2019 Pro and was considering the M4 upgrade with AI coming to the table, but now I may hold off until the M5. My 2019 Intel version is still working for me.
@@ronskallerud5953 if it works then don't give apple any more money. The ai isn't going to be fully working until next year too. Thanks for watching.
To me since Ive returned to the Apple Ecosystem and started watching all these channels that are Mac only I get the sense that no matter what your looking to buy, immediately some new aspect of the very same thing you just purchased now does this/that or the next one will yada-yada. What I think is buy what you want, do as much homework by coming to channels like this for information. Then buy without remorse. If there's a real chance something is changing like now with AI, then by all means, be very selective. But the real truth is that the M2 Studio Ultra is still worth buying today. 🎉 So I buy thinking out to ? For my tech needs.
I agree, people should buy what device works for them the best and we are all different at the end of the day.
Honestly I don’t see the point in upgrading every year. What a waste of of money and totally unnecessary for anyone regardless of what you do.
I agree. I don't even upgrade every year and I have a Mac channel.
That is just stupid.. I'm still on mid 2019, it starts to get pretty tired with only 8gb, and cant really handle my daily tasks, i hope for a significant drop on the M3's so i can get one with 36gb ram, that solve my problems, the chip, not so much. Refurbish is not really an option in Scandinavia, and the prices are 25% above the US.. kinda sucks.. well, M3 i hope :)

Thank you.
Until MicroLEDs will come out, I will be totally happy with MiniLEDs. I will not buy laptop with OLED screen. In device with aging battery and keyboard I'm not adding also a potentially burned-in screen that breaks from doing it's main and only thing (displaying) :D
Knowing Apple they can still have 1 year partial warranty and add burn-in case in some AppleCare++++UltraProMax :D
Yeah, but OLEDs are getting much better with the tech built in for anti-burn-in. I feel Apple is waiting to get that perfected but yes you might want to wait a year after it comes out.
@@craigneidel Well, they can get better, but burn-ins are a part of their design, basically. I guess that's a temporary technology that will be replaced by MicroLEDs/NanoLEDs or something else in future :) If they will use OLEDs for long, I'd better buy a Mac Mini :)
I'll wait for the M5 but I am asking myself where is the cpu ugrade battle going to end?
It will never end so that it why m5 might be good since it should have many additional changes too.
I’m sticking with my M1 Air until I get more clarity on Apple Intelligence. Perhaps some upgrade to neural engine or more RAM for the best locally run LLMs.
Yeah if the M1 works keep it for as long as you can.

Craig!, Thank you very much!
Thanks again. Hope you are doing good.
Tandem OLED, FaceID, no notch, and 5G radio hardware will do it for me!
Hopefully the next chassis change includes keycaps that don't turn shiny in just a few weeks!
Yeah I agree that the key caps need to change for sure.
Apple is always so slow to upgrade things. I get it because no one is buying a laptop every year but how hard is FaceID in a laptop.
OLEDs have been out for like 5 plus years on laptops. Come on Apple…
Competition is slapping Apple around in many areas.
I don’t want it slimmer more battery life please
Yeah I hear you.
I would say buy the M4 Pro-Max for two years and then get a new M6
Not a bad idea also if you have the money.
Apple will do some backward stuff to promote their Pro and Max models, like decreasing the iPhone 16 Plus battery from 4383 mAh to 4006 mAh compared to the iPhone 15 Plus, and reducing the MacBook Pro M2 Pro's 200GB/s memory bandwidth to 150GB/s in the MacBook Pro M3 Pro, the successor to the MacBook Pro M2 Pro.
You never do know with Apple.
I have a M1 Max MacBook. Once they make their laptops tandem OLED like the iPad I will upgrade. The performance will still be good enough for a couple years until that happens.
Yes, the M1 Max is a beast and is still very fast today.
@Craig Neidel Where did you purchase your MacBook skins from?
I got it from fishskyn.com/
If the snapdragons had full Linux support today, I would not even be thinking about a macbook right now. But if Linux is out of the question, apple has a Unix which I would take any day over a Windows. I will just wait till December and see where Snapdragon's Linux support turns out to be. By that time, we will also know how much battery backup can Lunar Lake give.
If you don't need anything now wait and see how things hash out.
You can run Asahi Linux on Apple chips. The default is a dual boot. Not perfect (yet) but worth a shot if you already have the hardware. I wouldn't buy a Mac to run Linux on it. Theres an fedora and Arch based official Asahi Linux spins. There also guides to set up Ubuntu. Gut I managed to get Gentoo running (from the Fedora install), because everything is a Gentoo installer if your brave enough. Its stupefying how much faster the laptop is with Linux running on it.
@@LibreGlider Yeah, I read somewhere that Fedora has packaged Asahi. That's exciting stuff. But yes, I am going to wait a few more months to see how the laptop situation develops. Target is a Linux compatible laptop that gives me 18+ hours of battery backup on (my) regular usage.
Ill upgrade my windows gaming pc this year then and then get myself the m5 then thanks for the updates

Not a bad list.
If they could come up with a better cooling solution than a fan, they could have thinness, battery life, and weight saving from lack of fan and thinner case. Maybe the 2 nanometer node will enable no heat sink but the aluminum case and internal copper heat spreader. CPU speed for most of us is a "non-issue", hence the Air being the best current solution. Imagine a "Pro" OLED able to use a smaller battery due to screen power saving and CPU power savings, and no fan.
I actually have a 15" M2 Air with 16 GB Ram and a 512 GB SSD with not fan and it works great. But, as just better make sure and not make the Pros too thin as those are for getting serious work done.
Right now, I’m drooling over an M4 iMac. I will keep my M1 Air. I have 27” LG monitor, it isn’t bad, but I don’t trust it when I do photography work. I think 24” would be fine. I also hope that more than 8GB of Ram is standard, which is my main fear.

I would just find the best deal and get one. No reason to wait a few more years and you can then sell it since they have a very good resale.
Should you be 'waiting' for ? MAC, well, I think if you've noticed, waiting only offers you what is or could be around the bend... in other words, you're waiting forever. You gotta just pick your product, wait for it to drop... buy it and dont look back...🎉
I agree in most cases.
All M4 needs is to give us more standard ram and storage. That in itself will be like a free $400 upgrade (which is insane being that it actually costs Apple peanuts). And I’m not buying a laptop unless it has a giant notch on top for no reason whatsoever.. so any Mac is out if they do away with the beauriful notch that every other screen on the market has copied cuz it’s so integral to the functionality and form factor of the device. We can all hope.
the real question is......should you wait for m6 instead of m5???
Yeah, I get it but just giving the info on the M5 which will have major changes.
What are REAL reasons to upgrade?
Speed ? Don't be kidding! Allready the M1 chip in base configuration is insane fast.
Efficiency? Don't be kidding! The efficiency of the very first apple silicon is breathtaking.
Security? Thats a valid point if you are affected by the flaw of M1, M2 and M3 that is not fixable by microcode than there is no question upgrade as fast as possible to the M4.
User upgradeable Memory with standard parts? That would be one of my icebreakers.
User upgradeable Storage with standard parts? That would be another of my icebreakers.
REAL Docking station port (not that wobbly USB-C/TB flimsy garbage) with on/off switch so that opening the lid for start is not neccessary (like REAL Docks perform)? That would be also one of my icebreakers.
To be precise for what the mac is capable (a real consumer device) allready the MBA M1 is awesome. For REAL work except in one or two niches (e.g. content creation) even the MBPs have to many downsides, we don't live in a world of 99% working as a content creator. There are engineers , accountants, ... there is no seriously accepted software solution for CAD, ERP,..... why does Dassault didn't have a port for apple silicon from CATIA?
MacOs is perfect for private use. But even with the trend to do everything cloud based there will be no way into the industry for apple due to the lack of maintenance and repairability on site (Look at the Maintenace and repair guides of Lenovo, HP, Dell)
I think most people will know when it's time to make the upgrade based on use case since everybody is so different. Macs still sell even though we don't live in a creator world and for many the M1, M2, and M3 systems will be more than enough for a few more years.
Gonna wait for the M7

Hopefully, there will be no M4 Laptops as their NPU would be too weak for AI needs today, Apple needs to jump to M5 with 64 TOPS NPU right away. The M4 is fantastic in raw single core power I love it. Never will going to understand, why they are not able adding a 5G radio transceiver into their mobile Laptops. Are they mobile or not? No guarantee that M4 will be released this year..!
The M4 will come this year for some of their systems for sure.
Apple wants to go thinner, they have said this a few times. I believe they will do what they did with the ipad pro m4. Since the chip was more efficient, they were able to reduce the battery size, yet keeo the same battery user length. Which means thinner. I feel like the M4 and definitely m4 macbooks will follow that plan. I hope not tbh, if they want MacBooks / Apple to really grasp gaming, the same battery size as know would be SOO beneficial! Just think when youre in Apple game mode, the GPU and CPU get a slightly higher power current. Eg over clocked to foucus on getting the most out of it.
Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about going thinner on the laptops. I just hope we don't see the same throttling issues as we did before but only time will tell.
@craigneidel I really hope they don't go thinner. They're already a nice size, I believe!
As someone who enjoys gaming, I understand how much strain gaming can put on a system. So, for me, I believe having the same battery size will benefit this space more than anything else. Gaming will use whatever they allow for Max TPD and if they're truly serious about getting into this market and converting PC users over to Apple/Mac. Being able to say use Apples Game Mode as an over clocker. The system slightly overclocks the CPU and GPU when in this mode.
@@Everyday-man I agree for sure
With all due respect, the Macbook Pro is a brick??? Has this reviewer compared comparable computers with the same or even less power?? Just buy now and be happy with an M3.
I'm not reviewing anything but just giving an opinion.
Understood, but you do know this machine is super powerful based on the processing power. I would not call it a brick. I can show you various gaming machines that absolutely have large dimensions.
I'm not sure if you have watched my channel. I actually like the larger size so not sure what you are arguing. I was just saying it's much thicker then the other Macs in the lineup and people who buy that would only for the power etc. vs. the light Air. Yes there are thicker laptops for sure but just not Apple systems.
@craigneidel I hear ya. Not an argument at all. 😀. Just don’t think the MacBook is a brick. I personally own one. I go as far back as an iBook. I think the Mac is an amazing machine.
yes they are but the 16" Pros can be a bit to travel with as I have done that. I'm not saying they are too heavy but you just feel them when traveling. Anyhow I think we are on the same page.
I still have my old washed ahh intel 2018 Air working but obv its hella slow and washed! I have to upgrade to m4.....I got no choice, I cannot work with this anymore!
Yep, your wait should not be much longer - hope they come out soon.
f*ck.... I am on an intel 2019, wanted to buy the M4.... but all these goodies on the M5. Now I don't know anymore!!! Where in 2025 will they come, end of year probably.
Yeah, but they will always look better a year out so if you need one then the M4 will be great too.
@@craigneidel this time, the M5 has a lot of new stuff: new design/ thinner, 25% performance increase/2nm, better screen, face ID, improved AI, wifi 7.
With the new chip probably new battery performance.
Stay with the M1 or M3 and wait for Huawei's new revolution chip laptop year 2025 to see what the big changes in the development technology .
A bunch of changes are happening for sure over the next year.
I'm waiting for a redesign. I can't stand the huge notch at the top of the screen tried a few times always returned them. Trying to hide the notch with a black background not the best option for such an expensive laptop. Plus waiting for tandem OLED, WiFi7/5G, Thunderbolt 5, PCIE 5.0 speed SSD. Possibly thinner we will see. I'm currently still on and happy with my 15" 2017 MBP I'm one of the very few that loves using the Touch Bar.
Yes, the M5 should hopefully see a design change but not sure it will change the notch.
Cant wait for m9 leaks
Yeah you are one of those people....
No No No not thinner It is just now ok with ports SD slot HDMI are al ok not thinner!!
Yeah, we will see how it works out but it's just a rumor now anyhow.
No - I'm waiting for the M-11
Ok, wait then.
My notch-less M1 MacBook Air is still the best laptop I've ever owned. I'm gonna keep it until Tim Applesauce pries it from my hands.
M1s are great. My iMac is an m1.
