- In this video I dig up an old fishing lure design concept and make an adjustable fishing lure. The result was a shock. And I announce the best guess on the bass weight.

I applaud you for showing something that doesn’t work. I have done the same thing. Too many times in this day and age people only want to show success and never where things go wrong and that is why nobody learns from videos like that. I enjoyed this very much and will continue to show my fails as well! Good watch!

I liked the story behind your coming across and old design revisited . That you brought your concept from paper to lure in hand is a victory in itself .
In my humble opinion I believe had the head design of your lure been set back more with more the flat surface extended , like that of the Zalt Wobbler or the Drifter Tackle Believer .You may have achieved more wobbling action . I may add as well a more scooped head like that of the Luhr Jensen Kwikfish a more erratic swimming cadence would be achieved . I'd know the engineer in you will not have you satisfied and may return to workout the issue if not for closure . Thanks Franco , for all your content .

Even though it didn't perform as you had hoped, we got results. So now we know. I really enjoyed the experiment. If nothing else, I learned that the less material the lure has, the more precise weight & balance needs to be, every little bit matters. I haven't given the "water in the cup on a scale" method of measuring yet.
Its the simplest and often the most reliable.
This was more useful than you think. Sometimes I go fishing without catching a lot but I learn something. Why not make another video installing a lip? Stay with it till you find what ya want. You could screw different metal lips to the top of the head or a standard plexiglass diving lip to the underside. Either way you have a very interesting channel. Thank you

That looks like it would wobble like mad! We used those 50 years ago. You don't see them that much anymore

Also, I think a little dive bill, would make all the difference. Then, your adjustable tail will give you a variety of results. ….i was really amazed at how little action this had. ….i expected a really fast tight wobble, like a yozuri

Hey Franco, another interesting experiment. When you cut the cedar on the table saw it looked like you didn't push the wood all the way passed the blade and left the wood between the blade and the fence with the blade still spinning. That wood can fly back at you. Pls be safe.

You showed us 3 different methods to find volume:
1- by density formula of a given material
2- the method that you're using in this video
3- by a "still", the water tube pipe that you built
I experimented a lot using these 3 methods, there are remarcable differences between, big one! 4,5 grams.
I experimented not only with lures, with cube shapes too where I can calculate volume and compare with the 3 above mentioned.
Probably the density method is the most reliable one, what do you think?
I have done the same kind of experimentation over the years. While the volume calculation with the density of the material is usually the most accurate it is only true when the material is well-controlled, meaning the material is uniform and non-porous. But for actual lure building situations the weight in water is most consistently accurate.
The "weight in water" is the method that you're showing in this video right?
Indeed, based on your experience, this method is more reliable than the "still one" where you have to wait patiently that all the drops fall down from the pipe. Based on what I did it is.

I was looking forward to this video as an adjustable lure sounds awesome! I was a bit surprised that it had little to no action or just very erratic action. Cool concept that I think is definitely worth developing a little more. What about an adjustable angle lip next!?

It looks good I think you will be able to get it working in the way you are looking for and maybe if you was to put a little bit upper fine on it it might give it a little more side to side movement

I think if the tail bet further back so that only the wider 'tail' section bent you would get a good tail wag...

I would use it as a vertical wobbler. Standard technic for walleye and asp in my country.
I think the flat paddle on the back end stabilized it. Make the head a little wider. Or make the head and tail wider and a slow sinker. Use it like a jerk bait. It should do some crazy things.
It actually works pretty nice as a twitch bait with the tail slightly angled down.
I know a couple months old, but what about a plastic screw and nut, the ballast with the screw and nut may be too much weight to get a nice flick of the tail.

try making that hinge more like a swivle (loose), maybe you'll get some better action, by the way, it was a nicely put together video, really enjoyed it 😸

I misunderstood what you were trying to do and now I wonder if it might help. Instead of making the tail controlled, just put a pin in it and let it "dolphin" up and down. There's lots of lures that go side to side but I can't think of any that are jointed and go up and down. I would be interested to know if it would work.
I don't think it will work because most of the action comes from the shape of the head or the entry part of the lure. But that's an easy one to try, I'll pull the screw out and just stick a pin in. You might see the result in a short video.
It is disappointing building a lure and not getting the action that one hopes to get.
It really do like uv resin for repair/filler. I think it is better than the baking soda/super glue.

Could the unweighted tail be a reason for the lure to be so stable when the tail was angled uppwards acting like a buoyant hydrofoil. 🤔

what would happen if that tail would be narrow? I think that there is a possibility that rear tail is "stabilizing" action of the front maybe? You got me interested to make it work now 😀As you said it yourself, I would never imagine it went so straight!
Nice looking lure, I love the hinge idea but to be honest, you really made a lawn dart, heavy at the front, "feathers" in the back, pointy and rounded off, and yes, nice little dive bib at 35° - 45° would probably fix the action. Maybe even if you caved in the flat surface on the head a bit with a dremel it would grab more water. Maybe a future video idea? Make a mold and compare the original to the one with a lip and caved in one.

Is anybody with me on this??? In the weeks between new builds, what if you took an old lure and just modified it? For example, what if you cast a crankbait from one or your old molds in silicone or the stiffer, more durable type of plasticol? I would love to see what that does to the action. The Nomad Vertrex Vibe is partially cast in silicone. A lot of people love that lure. Does the silicone really make a difference? Can the Engineered Angler give us an answer?
I have actually done exactly that. The big difference is the lure has no positive buoyancy and is not stable enough to give any consistent action. But makes a wicked fast sinking twitch bait.
