Yes and no I feel the like the band ditched the original.concept groove and feel of the song and went with their own thing because they didn't know how to interpret Jimmy's style

@Davesworth the demos were very rough. Things had to be changed and moved around. But portnoy did his absolute best, while trying not to overstep boundaries. It wasn't his band, but they did listen to some of the things he suggested because of his veteran experience behind the kit
Well Portnoy was also a huge influence on Rev, which was the reason they asked him to help on the album after Rev's passing
portnoy said most of the stuff in the demos was simple so even the rev wouldnt let it be like that....for example there was no intro in welcome to the family@@Davesworth

Wow, so originally the line was "Is it something I did?". And also in the bridge the Rev mumbles most of it but you can clearly hear the line "I may be out of my mind" which they later changed to "he may be out of his mind". This demo gave me the chills.
I remember reading, or maybe it was even on the dvd that came with the self titled album that he would come up with songs and know how he wants it to sound and would do that distorted mumbling until he found the right words to fit. He truly was a very different and brilliant guy 🥹
So what I’m seeing is, Rev was a huge and I mean HUGE fan of broadway style horror/goth music. It’s very similar vibe to the self titled album and like A little Piece of Heaven. I really wish they kept these sides alive but I guess it’s gone now…
Rev also wrote a lot of emotional songs while Shadows writes mostly political/philosophical stuff

It's obvious that they try to keep that side of their song writing alive, you can hear them trying to emulate what Jimmy could create here and there while still trying to evolve and move away from what they've done before, but he was just such an incredibly rare natural talent when it came to creating epic pieces like this. No one could write like The Rev other than The Rev himself, he was too weird and unique for any one to ever truly emulate - his creativity is a huge part of A7X's original success, and, no matter how much they carry his influence into their song writing, the very sad reality is that we will never hear another song like this again - it's just not possible without him.
No shit. The bridge was originally the chorus!? They definitely changed the song around a bunch from this version
I can't blame them tbh. The song definitely needed a chorus, and the bridge works way better as a bridge.
They detailed this a bit in the breakdown series on A7X's page. It was pretty neat to hear all of the production and adjustments that went into it from the demo to production.
What's even crazier is when they talked about this song on their breakdown of it on their channel, they said the outro (we all die young) was meant to be the chorus initially. Sounds like the song was in search for a chorus for a while

@@eoxandi6117 Syn said a long time ago that he has a demo of him and Jimmy singing So Far Away, but I'd imagine it's entirely up to him as to whether that ever gets released or not since he wrote the song himself. I'd definitely like to hear it at some point but like I said, it's probably his choice to release it

I really think A7X got so lost after his death, not mourning side but in terms of identity, keeping inovating while keeping the same vibes. Nightmare was awesome even if it's criticized a lot, they did quite a bit with at the demos they had (non finished version). But for example The stage was so funky and psychiedelic sounding, hail to the king had 50% of very bland musics, yeah riffs were cool but the whole sound missed spark. I don't like the screaming period they had, but damn City of evil, avenged sevenfold, waking the fallen and even nightmare in a way, they were incredible

6:28 - 7:17 it's still clear when Portnoy plays a lot of cymbals and hihats in this part it's clearly like him, even just listening I know that he's playing, the rev must be proud there.

Crazy it’s been 15 years already without Jimmy. Hearing his mumbles then going back and jamming to fiction, Matt nails trying to sound like him when he’s singing “I hope it’s worth it. what’s left behind me yeah. I know you’ll find your own way…” awesome demo audio, thanks for posting it. I love their new stuff, LIBAD hits hard, but the rev had a huge impact on the style of their older music.

This version sounds like a CoE song, but with the dark and moodiness of Nightmare. Very cool
Hearing it played by Jimmy gives it a whole new sound.. save me is one of my all-time favorite songs. Portnoy did the band so much justice when he passed. There isn't another drummer I can think of who could have made the album as great as it was.

Im biased but damn the period with the rev was awesome, i truly think it was him who sparked everything, brought those "ideas" of songs but in fact they were mostly done just needed to be changed a bit, sang and played on guitar to come together.
It was punchy, original, amazing sounding and it had all those small features that made it sound sexy. From good and deep lyrics, to punk drum tracks, crazy guitar solos and rythmic/energetic riffs, to all the small things that would be added like his screams mainly.. i think they really lost their core when he died and they had a crazy identity crisis. To me there's Avenged Sevenfold and then after that breaking point there's Avenged Sevenfold 2/the aftermath.
While it's true what you say about Jimmy, most of Avenged members helped a lot with the making of the songs and a lot of influences and styles jimmy used in their songs is also used by other members. Their "core" was always there, you can hear how the members talk about this in their breakdown videos or the latest podcast.

People say that portnoy changed this song a lot, even though in the interview portnoy himself said that the most part was done by the rev
i literally got chill all over my body, it's kinda eerie to hear jimmy singing in the song that later dedicated for him, the song that grieving for him. it's quite emotional, but i also am glad to hear his voice. It just added a whole new feeling the next time i listen the one in the album. RIP Jimmy we miss you so much..

The nightmare album was an instant classic. Best way to listen is on vinyl with a bad ass system. Classic album deserves to be played on a classic format

Really interesting to hear save me without it's chorus that we all know and love. But iirc Matt said they took the chorus from another song they were writing and used that as the chorus for save me. Even though it's really cool to hear this and hear some different parts, I've gotta say they made all the right calls with the arrangement of the final version.
He actually said they were listening to Def Leppard-Photograph and they copied the chorus. Great song too!
I think the chorus with the time change that was moved to the end for the final product adds so much tensions and works so well near the end.
Even the unfinished base version is a masterpiece, we already knew how great it would be
I genuinely thought I'd never get to hear this. It's actually got me quite emotional. Hearing Jimmy's voice, his genius on the kit and just how much input he had on this absolute masterpiece is as equally gut wrenching as it is amazing. God I miss him.
I don't think Portnoy changed it much, he actually made it better in my opinion

@monkeyzdrummer760 he changed a few things on the album during breakdown it was gates or Matt but one of them said during one part of this track they let Mike do what he want and then he made the intro for welcome to the family bc it was originally just a few snare hits

I’m so happy this is out. Portnoy did an amazing job - as we’d expect. This really shows how much the Rev contributed to the songwriting in A7X. Which make it even more impressive how great the Stage and LIBAD came out.

Same. I only just heard this demo right now as I’m typing this, but I think they can almost be looked at as separate songs in a way. There’s quite a lot of differences, and I can appreciate every last one of them. This one is already on my regular rotation going forward.

This is what I miss most. Rev’s melodies, mixed metal & ska style rhythms, with Shadow’s monster and power smooth sweet vox.
They were feeling spicy with this song with the classic metalcore style riffs
This clears the full release version imo. This has a lot more pinkly smooth influence here and I adore that. Not to mention Jimmy singing is always a plus :D.

It is the Rev singing, he used to do that while creating new songs and lyrics, he had the rythym and the beat and his head so he just mumbled the song and eventually find lyrics for it. He really was the heart of the band
