Son of the Moon (S.O.T.M) is a 5-track self-defining eccentric EP by Tar1Q - a divergent artist, who shows vulnerability and uniquely expresses a difference with his style of music. This project displays a sense of maturity from Tar1Q in a lyrically soothing way; therefore, it will be highly valued by the younger generation who will find it relatable. It reflects how the Gen-Z thinks so modern and their adept ability to include once-taboo topics into their narratives without sensationalizing them.
S.O.T.M is well-executed to make a mark and give Tar1Q a solid place in his genre (Afro-pop) with heavy-hitting potential songs. Tar1q’s uniquely carefree-yet-doggedly-serious attitudes are what characterizes this project. He is unquestionably going to be the next poster child of Gen-Z music, and not just because of his tone and aesthetic, he has a distinct sound that a group of Gen-X or Boomers would undoubtedly describe as “what the kids are like these days.”
What makes an artist like Tar1q so emblematic of a whole generation is not his exact age, but his sentimentality; not what he chooses to address in his music, but how he chooses to address it. Tariq is willing to not only talk about mental health, sexuality, and romance but also the struggles he has faced as a direct result of these issues. It is easy to think that just being sad or young makes a Gen-Z artist, but it is really the way in which they attack their feelings that endear them to a whole generation. However, S.O.T.M doesn’t demand that TAR1Q figures out the totality of his sound right now. It’s a continuous process and his recipe for success is to honor it.
