Back between 1994 to 1996, I dated a girl from my high school. She lived in Valley Stream, about a block east from Hook Creek Blvd. Her father always told us to never go west or you’ll get shot. I once said let’s go to NYC, the Rosedale LIRR is a short walk from here, and her father said no. So we went over to Valley Stream LIRR instead. I knew the reason why at 17, but never really questioned it.
As a Queens native, Rosedale wasn’t the only place like this; Howard Beach was the same way too. Bayside, Queens as well as Flushing was all White at one time too. The more things change, the more they stay the same...
Her story reminds me of my family's experience as a child. I was raised in Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY. It was a predominantly white neighborhood, and my mother purchased our first house there. We met 2 other black, working, educated, intact, families there. Little by little all of the whites sold and moved out.

I hope some very skilled people come over this video and find everybody in here who ain’t already dead and in hell cause we’re gonna make it hell for them here 40 years later.
Yep. We moved in and are over 80% of that population.... And the property value is higher than the city's average. I doubt it would be that way if it were other blacks living there.
I remember, perhaps 15 or so years ago now. In the all white area of Gary Indiana named Black Oak (yeah, it's ironic). I black lady purchased a home. When she closed on it someone burned it down. From what I remember from the story the lady paid cash for the house.

My family and I experienced this same hatred in 1972 in the city of Detroit, Michigan in a Polish immigrant neighborhood at the corner of Davidson and Eureka St, right out side of Hamtramck, MI. Pipe bombs thrown at our house because we were the first black folks to move there. Yes, Detroit 1972, we endured a lot of racism in the city of Detroit.
lisangel ... people are/were under the impression that blacks that moved north didn’t experience that level of racism... but let me tell you, we did. We were the first black family to buy a home in that Polish neighborhood in Detroit and we caught hell for it. And THEY were immigrants; a lot of their elders didn’t speak English ... go figure 🤦🏽♀️
This is where we lived in the 80s-90s. Initially, we were one of the few black families in our area. Then "they" moved out further on Long Island, and more immigrant families bought homes in Rosedale ("they" over-priced the RE), and raised home values and medium income. We moved away in 2001. Yes, I remember the basement floodings!! Homes had pumps in the basement to pump out the water.

I once said let’s go to NYC, the Rosedale LIRR is a short walk from here, and her father said no. So we went over to Valley Stream LIRR instead. I knew the reason why at 17, but never really questioned it.
This woman is so gracious. 💖
Yes she is!!!
Nothing hurts more than living in a country where everyone hates you for something you can't do anything about
As a Queens native, Rosedale wasn’t the only place like this; Howard Beach was the same way too. Bayside, Queens as well as Flushing was all White at one time too. The more things change, the more they stay the same...
Can't forget carnarsie bensonhurst
My dad's family was 1 among the 5 black families who moved to Rosedale in the mid 70s and he constantly tells me about the race riots til this day!!!!
This would make a very powerful movie!!!
Yes it would
I remember watch this a while ago and broke my heart ! I think once the world gets to see how wrong we’ve done our brothers and sister
Her story reminds me of my family's experience as a child. I was raised in Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY. It was a predominantly white neighborhood, and my mother purchased our first house there. We met 2 other black, working, educated, intact, families there. Little by little all of the whites sold and moved out.
@11:16 Devils hate hearing the truth. It burns their soul. That and their karma.

Most of These white people are still alive and do you think they change or are they teaching their ways to their family continues .
They're not changing!!!
Beautiful Caribbean Queen say it eloquently.
And why do we refrain from calling this terrorism, because surely it is, a leapord has never change its spots.
I do remember this serious racial disparities back on the mid 1970's. I was a teenager living from the opposite side in Jamaica,Queens.
Mrs. Glenda is so beautiful and so well poised. Righteous and Confident✨ God bless her.
God Bless her and her family for standing up and refusing to be put in fear.
I LOVE the stats about the home values, etc. Neighbor has done nothing but improve. Brave people. I appreciate what they did and the sacrifices they made.
I those status were very encouraging to see! I wish they included if the quality of the zone schools of the area changed.
What they did to the children made me cry.
I hope some very skilled people come over this video and find everybody in here who ain’t already dead and in hell cause we’re gonna make it hell for them here 40 years later.

I grew up in Rosedale thank God it changed otherwise I'd be in jail.
Black immigrants are hard working people....
Yep. We moved in and are over 80% of that population.... And the property value is higher than the city's average. I doubt it would be that way if it were other blacks living there.
I am glad this documentary is being shown again! Racism is learned. It is taught based on fear. Keep being lovely and graceful in your conversation!
I remember, perhaps 15 or so years ago now. In the all white area of Gary Indiana named Black Oak (yeah, it's ironic). I black lady purchased a home. When she closed on it someone burned it down. From what I remember from the story the lady paid cash for the house.
Still have neighborhoods like that 😞
Lol rose dale has no white ppl now lol
Facts lol
I live right across from Brookville park and I'm liking the changes being made to the roads. Also I was shocked to see that video 40years ago. I would have never known and I now live here in my early 20s.
I remember I lived in riverdale in the Bronx couple years back and I tell you I never felt more comfortable when I seen blks and Hispanics moving in honestly
hispancis are racist af
Says the racist
Guys they are planning to make this into a movie and the lady in this video will not be included in the project! Let’s help !!! Her name is Glenda Spencer. I spoke with her earlier today.
I'm proud to say my parents were homeowners in South east Queens. My brother still is. I remember when this happened.
Prayer changes things. The Most High just moved the evil people out of the neighborhood and then there was peace in the land🙌
What a beautiful, graceful woman.
I live here. This is my neighborhood ❤️ it is in fact a Very West Indian/Caribbean neighborhood now. I love seeing the diversity everyday when I go outside. My how Things have changed for the better.
The interviewer makes me mad. He wanted her to be docile and say that everything has changed and racism is gone and white people have changed. When she stood her ground and detailed systemic racism he was obviously frustrated and cuts to commercial. Then they come back and he keep repeating “you don’t think it has changed 🤨” and calling racist “haters”.
Exactly
Powerful interview. I love how Ms. Glenda refused to be martyred or take full credit for the change in Rosedale.
Imagine if they said "Black lives matter!" back then??
Ashé to this woman for keeping it all the way 💯 and not backing down to the real issue of America. Notice how the host had to take a break when it got too real.
Say it loud I'm black and I'm proud! Now... Say it louder!!! God bless you my black sister, there's nothing like black✊ power, black🤷 integrity, black🎼🎷🌅🍗🍇🌈🌹👼💯❤️🙏🤗 soul 👩🎓educated and intelligent black 👑Queen's and 👑 King's, prince and princess.
My family and I grew up in Rosedale Mississippi in the 60's and 70's and there's no difference between the two.
