Brian, I have already watched ( ua-cam.com/video/EMvFxM7XkEI/v-deo.html ) and it is very interesting. However, could you possibly do a video showing Intel CPU 12th & 13th gens (and include 14th Gen in the chart as well) that are down clocked/undervolted in a new video. As this will answer many questions with short battery life on Intel laptops.

I think if I were flipping this PC I would color mark the jumpers and board so if any of them fall off the board for any reason, the owner can figure out where to put it back onto the board so that everything can continue working again.

I built a system using a Xeon 1230 V2 about 12 years ago. It's still my backup desktop. It gets the hand-me-down graphics cards from my main system, and it's still a perfectly usable computer.
It's nice to have the latest and greatest gear, but like this channel constantly shows, you can get pretty good performance within a nice budget.

I bought a e3 1230 v3 in 2018. I used that xeon first for my college workstation, than in a server and know it is in a gaming PC in my living room.
It is basically my go to recommendation for a budget system.

I tested a 1080 with a 3770S recently and got around 6700 points on Time Spy. I was really surprised at the gaming results. I just wish I had a local market like yours because I could make a living just building PCs. I'm going to give it a go selling online. I have one I am preparing to sell right now. It is a 3770S and 1650 in a 15+ year old Rosewill case. I was thinking, 'who the hell is going to buy that?', until I realized I was looking at it all wrong. It isn't a crappy conglomeration of old parts, it is a budget e-sports 'Sleeper PC'. It will get 200fps in Fortnite or CS2 but it looks like the PC your grandma bought in 2007. I'm also putting together a 4790S and 1080 FTW in a modern style case with RGB. That one actually ran Cyberpunk at 1440p with 60+ fps at medium settings. Again, I was surprised, and the CPU was about on par with the 10th gen i5 in my budget gaming laptop.

I took a Precision T1700, 4th gen i5/16gigs Ram, and mounted all the stock internals onto the back of a standard Element TV. It's been one of my favorite units. From the front, you cannot tell it's anything more than a basic TV. On the back, All the hardware, plus the stock PSU. Repurposed the case can to cool the TV from the vent on top, and I can run it at 75 Hz, and with any select random GPU, it handles games just fine. I've rebuilt a few of these workstation units, and I love them. So, my Non-smart TV ended up being an absolute Windows 11 unit that has been running non-stop for several weeks now, since it got moved. It never gives me any issues, and runs nearly silent. Note on the fans, though, if you do ramp them up, they don't go anywhere in between Idle and Full speed. Yes, get get noisy, but move a Ton of air. This is good if you don't mind the noise, and you can also ramp up the speed on any GPU you have independently, in case you're running it hard. Being open air on the back helps, but I've also made a neat little cardboard shield that is housed and held on by the CPU fan, painted it black, and it looks good and does the job of dispersing air over the mobo. All in all, these are nifty little units to play around with.

Another great video showcasing that even older parts can still be useful and do some gaming. I personally do a lot of builds like this but here in California people see Xeon and shy away from the build. I recently sold an i5 2400 system that was originally posted with an E3 1240-V2 which has twice the threads. I guess it's just people not knowing anything but the mainstream core branding.

wow - tech yes bro - I have a little silly story to tell you - so I have a dell optiplex 9010 with a 4th gen i7. just got it. I have a few already so this is this weeks tinker with it and fix it up ya dig - I decide to try this plan you have here out, because I have a 1050 ti sit here, and the stuff all works great. so, I put together the build, and I take my rig I got here, and a power supply with me, and I go drive 3 hours out of town, and (3 hours back) just to go look at the micro center for this wire harness and little jumper pin. then it all went wrong when I talk to the guy at the service desk. he told me in so many words as much as that - what I wanted to do wouldn't work. that I needed to use only oem parts - and basicly keep it in the old case and whatever. he gave me like 5 different reasons why. he really didn't want to open the 4th gen from the look on his face. so then, like, I told him, ok, but, I can do all of it myself tho bro, and it all works already as it is, nothing needs repaired.
I just need the jumper and the power wire adapter, to buy a random new case and stick it in it so I end up with a build that's all good and looks nice.. and he told me before he would get any parts out he needed to diagnose my pc, and that would cost me 250 to start out - I'm here to tell you I wont be give up so easily, I respect the schooling that I have gotten here and already knew he was a NO-MAN and not to listen to him, when I know these parts exist, and how to make a system setup and post. the guy wanted 250 bucks for wanting to basicly waste my time messing with my stuff doing shit that doesn't need done, instead of lead me to the aisle with the jumper pins and harness wires and sell me 2 parts I asked for. has anyone else experience this at micro center?

    For Fortnite, two things:
    1) Post-processing kills performance on anything and can just be set to Low without any noticeable visual change.
    2) Older systems benefit massively in the percentile lows by uninstalling the high resolution textures pack from within EGL. You can still set the textures to Epic even after and the game looks awesome but stutters much less on Broadwell and earlier.

As you said its really in those cpu intensive games like battle royales but also games like shadow of the tomb raider and watch dogs legion that the hazwell 4 core cpus really show their weakness. I hate the fact that OEM equipment can be so proprietary that rehousing it like this becomes such a hack job. I know there is always a market for real budget builds, but considering that Windows 10 support ends in less than 2 years, I struggle to suggest anything lower than 8th gen Intel at least. Maybe I'm just too fussy 🤷🏽‍♂️

Windows 11 can be backdoored onto even X58.
And official mainstream support ends in 2 years; long term support will go a bit beyond that. But mostly the topic is a moot point for gamers; the average gamer downloading their Steam/Epic/Origin games isn't a big mark for security exploits.

    • @craigmurray4746
      @craigmurray4746 9 місяців тому +2

@@doesitgame I know it can be backported onto older systems using RUFUS etc, which despite the requirement for UEFI boot, Microsoft obviously haven't stripped out BIOS booting from the codebase yet. I agree with what you said about prices coming down on used parts so it's for that reason I truly believe this isn't the best path to take when trying to build a cheap gaming PC. You can literally run games like Fortnight and Apex Legions on a potato! Used after-market main boards from the 4th to the 7th gen Intel chips and a lot of the slightly older AMD chips are very cheap if you look for deals or negotiate prices with the seller. DDR 4 RAM isn't horrible but that's subject to change soon with the NAND chip shortage coming. I put together a 7th Gen Core i7-7700K system with an Asrock board, mid-tower case, 16GB RAM, 512GB SATA SSD and a 2TB spinning drive as well as a GTX-1080 8GB GPU and a 650watt modular PSU for just under $400 US using all used parts. The system is very fast, over-clockable and completely upgradable! Using these old proprietary boards will not give you any of that and will be obsolete in about a year.

Might be possible where you live, but the OEM stuff will be a lot cheaper in most places that aren't the US.

@@AmosDohms I completely understand but if it's gaming you're wanting to do then just get a console. Those are everywhere and bypass all the "building a gaming PC" stuff! Hook it up to your TV and go! Sometimes the costs don't justify the means and "simpler" is always easier and cheaper.

@@walterlegere1403 Ya, it's really hard to beat really any Xbox 1 for gaming on a budget, but you can't do anything but game on it, and you get ripped off with online subscriptions. I'd rather go for the computer, even an old one, but I can see your point.

Yes, it is the same here in Germany. It seems as if many buyers do not know the prices of new hardware with warranty.
You can make a good deal with enough patience sometimes, but you have to find those parts that some do not know and where the auction ends late at night.
