I’ve spotted myself in the background for a split second! I was only here for the day (Sat 30th) but had such a great time despite the lousy weather. So many negative comments unfortunately which is really sad. Luckily everyone actually here was in good spirits, take photos and chat. The couple with the vampire ‘baby’ (amazing doll!) were fab, they let me have a cuddle for photos as the baby had red hair like me and matched my costume!! Thank you for sharing your video!
As someone who was on the Goth scene for 20 years and attended WGW in the 2000's and 2010's, I am so sad what this has degenerated into. Whitby was about escaping to a quint, lovely town that was out of season and cheap. A week of clubs, markets and pretty much doing what we did at home but only 5 nights of it. Goths didn't "dress up" any different from what they did at home. These people don't do this and would be too self-conscious to do this in their owns towns. This is now nothing more than the British public doing a Halloween Comic Con. Gone are the Goth clubs replaced with pub nights with crappy Tribute bands. If you want to experience a Goth festival now, you have to go to Germany because this is just a circus. Like the local village drunkard trying to join in the village fayre.
If Dracula were to walk these streets nobody would think he was out of place compared to some of these folks.Dracula might even be nervous of them .🤣🤣🤣

I was sad to see it no longer part of the WGW as have had more tham my fair share of great times there and met so many fantastic likeminded people! Sadly now WGW seems a far cry from the incredible event of old which I truly miss but Whitby will always be somewhere I love and feel totally at home in Xx
We stopped going when the Res shut down the cellar it was rubbish after that. Now its just who can have the best fancy dress outfit to pose for the photographers.
@@BlackDahlia776 I hated my photo taken by people I did not know. We have not been since 2015 and since WGW lost the Spa and our favourite club stopped (Nostalgia) doubt we will again. It was perfect in 2008/2009, as usual ruined by people not even on the scene.

Great video lots of locations great range of subjects really caught the feel of the place on a Goth Weekend day. Love seeing the range of outfits looks like folks put a lot of effort into it. Visual feast, but a terrible time to try and get a room in a B and B!! Thanks for sharing.
These aren't Goths. The few people I know who still go to Whitby Goth Weekend (for the bands) avoid this part of town. This is a circus of attention seekers who don't know what Goth is.
Many of the ones I knew who had gone from the begging started dropping off from 2009 but the straw that broke WGW was when they lost the Spa. It's pretty much just a pub venue now. Many of the old crowd go to Tomorrow's Ghost instead.

Nobody uses the term "alternative dress." As a Goth, I have no "alternative" to the way I dress, so the term makes no sense.

I used to go every year as my ex mother in law birthday was 1st November and lived in Whitby so it always coincided with Goth weekend. You could off gone up the 199 steps to Dracula grave ( the steps have been there for at least 700 years or even more) and saw where the ship came top ground in the Bram Stoker story. Also the Abbey has so much presence , began 657 AD and linked to St Hilda or Hild. St Hild drove the snakes away ( similar to Ireland st Patrick) ; the snake was a metaphor for the old ways.. and also determined how easter was calculated. The abbey was destroyed by Henry 8th dissolution of Monasteries in the 16th century breaking away from Roman Church.
@@4-video There is a grave at the top of the 199 steps marked "Dracula" so one can view it ! In the story Dracula kills the ship crew and the ship is wrecked in storm on Whitby bay , followed by Dracula leaving the ship form of a black dog:, how is that a tentative link ? it is pretty much part of the narrative to how he emerged in England. perhaps go to Whitby and find the grave and read the book.

I will say you don't see basically any goths there normally or at least not when I've went. It's only really the goth weekends where you can be yourself if you dress this way without getting too many dodgy looks, it's kinda sad tbh. We're treat differently just simply cus of how we dress and what music we listen to when we're just like everyone else personality wise and then they decided to do this and pretend as though they care about us and don't find us weird. I like it but I hate it too
Great fun, everybody ought to go. Read (or re-read) Dracula the week before you go, as it's set in Whitby so it will be even more thrilling an experience. Everybody is really friendly, quick to laugh with strangers, so kind and considerate-- not at all intimidating or 'stuck up'. The atmosphere is not claustrophobic or menacing in any way and so it's genuinely something the whole family can do together. The funniest part of the weekend is having a fry up in a quiet cafe the morning after and seeing all these tender-headed goths in hangover-hiding sunglasses quietly eating their eggs and mushrooms. Haha, they're all dressed up in their ghoulish theatrical garb but sitting and slurping on a mug of tea at 10am. These dramatic creatures of the night eating hash browns and reading the Sunday paper in silence. I shouldn't write 'they' because I was one of them too, in my Victorian mourning gown and veil flung back over my head so I can shovel my baked beans into my gob! So much fun!
I disagree, if everyone went prices would increase, it would be very hard to find cheap accommodation, it would be too busy and it would cease been a Goth weekend, oh wait, it has.
@@benfletcher9659 It's not my personal idea of a 'goth weekend' either but still great fun to see people celebrate Victoriana, English history, the gothic aesthetic and gothic-horror literature. For some, the music scenes of their youth are continually paid homage to and that DIY anti-establishment artpunk vibe is the most sacred aspect of their interpretation of a 'goth weekend'. What everybody is there for is none of my business. I'll always find things that make sense to me and are worth celebrating and participating in. At least the gently curious, festive 'normies' of all ages are there with good energy and a kind curiosity about it all instead of an ugly, goofy menacing ridicule of the participants. Whether the people there want to trade rare 'Part 1' 7 inches with me, chat about gothic literature or just sit and have a beer and talk to my husband about the Industrial Revolution and steam engines...all cool with me. I'm too old to keep nursing a fiercely proprietorial attitude to any 'authentic scene' for 'genuine goths' nor am I concerned about lack of cheap accommodation. If you're personally thinking of going, return to this thread and I'll personally reserve reasonably priced accommodation for you and your party-- it's my forte and I'd be be quietly thrilled to triumph on your behalf. I'm glad festivals like this bring so much international interest and income to independent businesses in and around Whitby. Goth weekend is only twice a year, unless I'm mistaken and it's changed to just once. Each to their own and I hope you have a fantastic 2023 doing what you most enjoy as often as you can. ✌🦇
@@ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293 I and many others who attended, feel it's no longer a Goth weekend but a Cosplay, which I would normally have no issues about if it has not been at the expense of this truly brilliant music festival. York would have been a far better place to have held a costume event and left Whitby to the Goths, in what was a quiet, cheap out of season holiday. I don't go anymore due to the above reasons but most things I knew from a Goth perspective have changed, not for the better. Happy 2023 to you too.

This happened to the punk scenes I grew up in too; the slick Californian pop punk corporate nerds wanting to be 'rock stars' in cahoots with uptight academic rich kids dominating the scenes with their suffocating identity politics/scenester behavioural policing along with their glossy overproduced fanzines ruined the entire thing beyond recognition and it just all died a slow undignified death. Whitby Goth festival is very generalised now and the net has been cast so wide. There's just no connection, no running narrative when it comes to 'goth' as you and I both understood and knew it, that much is clear. It's all very corporate and mainstream; just like the goofy social media/UA-cam kids asking with a straight face 'Can you be goth if you don't like the music?' What on Earth has happened to humans for them to ask something so monumentally empty-headed?! I could facepalm and cry at the same time at this absurd superficial, purely cosmetic fashion-trend nonsense. There's no substance and the past sure is another country; we DEFINITELY did things different there. These kids have no idea what it was all about, going by what I've seen and heard in this era. The internet is largely responsible for this destruction but the entire recipe eludes me. Things sure have changed and so much NOT for the better. love this! next time you come to Whitby try La Rosa hotel, they're a very quirky hotel that have rooms that are decorated like the famous Bram Stoker, and a better place to go for drinks would be the station Inn opposite the train station near by Greggs!
Ask most of these people about Bauhaus and they would start taking about architecture. Hardly a true goth amongst them. It would appear that the WGW has lost its identity to the stream punk crowd.
Sadly that started happening years ago and has just avalanched each year by more and more people saying "I fancy doing that next year..." with no actual understanding that this was a Gothic music festival. None of them are members of the Goth scene but just people who think they are "a bit mad and loopy".

After seeing your video you have given me the confidence now to use my iphone. I have also viewed some of your other videos and they too are excellent quality. Goth Weekend is April and October unfortunately not been able to go since I was taken ill! From Covid last year and still struggling with long Covid effects but I do make and design my own creations so every one is a one of creation
Sadly it was not about dressing up but been who you were. Most Goths wore what they did anywhere else but most of this lot don't do this at home. Sad what it's become.
Sadly this is what happens when Joe public try and "join in", like the local village drunkard at the village fayre. At least in Germany Goth festivals, the Germans leave the Goths to get on with it and doing try and "join in".
When it first started in the 1990's, people used to put signs up of "No Goths". However, this changed when they smelled the £££. Plus, it will be another generation of B&B/shop owners now.
@@hollyjeffords680 Well not ban, just feel unwelcome. When Whitby Goth Weekend (the music festival) first stared in 1994, pubs and B&B's used to put signs up in windows saying "No Goth's". I guess they soon stopped once the £££ came it. I suspect many of them have retired and it's a new generation of owners.
Well the real Goths would have been at the Spa, the Met or other venues watching bands or at a club. As for this lot, probably in bed, cup of tea, with a hot water bottle watching Coronation Street.
The Steam Punk crowd started showing up in the mid to late 2000's, mostly walked around as it's not a very music based scene. Had quite over the top outfits, people took their photos, which circulated and the public though it was a fancy dress weekend and "joined in" it's just avalanched more out of control each year. Shame as when it was just the Goths is was a bloody good weekend.
I think its better as a Whitby fancy dress event because there will be more variety such as Goths, Victorian, Steampunk, Tudor, even spooky like dracula, Frankenstein etc ... that's so much better and would attract many more people of all ages as most Goths tend to be on the younger side....
I went to Whitby for years from 1999 to 2008 when Laughton's shut down. It was a Goth festival please check the history and Goths are not all younger, some of us were there at the beginning. Some of these outfits will cost a fortune and we tended to buy from charity shops and customise ourselves. Something has been lost, here.
@@adelemarieish I think if I were a Goth living in the area I would perhaps start a new annual or monthly Goth meet up or festival especially if the original Goth gathering has now changed or been over taken by others who wear non Goth clothing

Still look Goth but really not in the scene anymore.
It was originally a music festival, in 1994 people in the UK Goth subculture arranged to meetup in Whitby, out of season so was quiet and cheap. They chose Whitby as it had some relevance to the Goth subculture (e.g. Dracula). For 5 days it was a series of live bands, clubs and markets that attracted about 1300 Goths twice a year in April and October. Then around the mid 2000's Steam Punks started attending and would wear some very elaborate costumes, people started taking their pictures. These pictures circulated and over time more photographers turned up, circulating even more photos that attracted more people (most of whom simply walked around town and didn't attend the Goth events). Eventually going away in October was no longer out of season, so more people would go to Whitby, which has caused prices to inflate. Many people said photos and now dress up, so it's just avalanched out of control to what you see here and isn't really a Goth weekend. It didn't help that the main organiser then lost the main venue, so pretty much confined to a pub now. I can't see the original weekend lasting much longer and Tomorrows Ghost will be the main event but on a different weekend. Sad really as it was a brilliant event.
I've wanted to go for years by boy online fighting between goths with "Your doing it wrong your not a real goth" type of crap has put me off. I'd rather go on a normal day when you can actually walk around without bumping into people and there's no price hiking.

@@benfletcher9659 Those that go to this Fancy Dress show wont have heard of Jo Hampshire who arranged the first meeting of 40 pen pal's meeting in the Elsinore in 1994. Its lost its soul and is just a money making racket for Whitby. It needs a name change don't call it a Goth Festival when it isn't one. The real Goth festivals are in Germany with the M'era Luna being my favourite.

They think it's dress up and walk about town and have picture taken. @@4-video There is a grave at the top of the 199 steps marked "Dracula" so one can view it ! In the story Dracula kills the ship crew and the ship is wrecked in storm on Whitby bay , followed by Dracula leaving the ship form of a black dog:, how is that a tentative link ? it is pretty much part of the narrative to how he emerged in England. perhaps go to Whitby and find the grave and read the book.

I will say you don't see basically any goths there normally or at least not when I've went. It's only really the goth weekends where you can be yourself if you dress this way without getting too many dodgy looks, it's kinda sad tbh. We're treat differently just simply cus of how we dress and what music we listen to when we're just like everyone else personality wise and then they decided to do this and pretend as though they care about us and don't find us weird. I like it but I hate it too
Great fun, everybody ought to go. Read (or re-read) Dracula the week before you go, as it's set in Whitby so it will be even more thrilling an experience. Everybody is really friendly, quick to laugh with strangers, so kind and considerate-- not at all intimidating or 'stuck up'. The atmosphere is not claustrophobic or menacing in any way and so it's genuinely something the whole family can do together. The funniest part of the weekend is having a fry up in a quiet cafe the morning after and seeing all these tender-headed goths in hangover-hiding sunglasses quietly eating their eggs and mushrooms. Haha, they're all dressed up in their ghoulish theatrical garb but sitting and slurping on a mug of tea at 10am. These dramatic creatures of the night eating hash browns and reading the Sunday paper in silence. I shouldn't write 'they' because I was one of them too, in my Victorian mourning gown and veil flung back over my head so I can shovel my baked beans into my gob! So much fun!

I disagree, if everyone went prices would increase, it would be very hard to find cheap accommodation, it would be too busy and it would cease been a Goth weekend, oh wait, it has.
@@benfletcher9659 It's not my personal idea of a 'goth weekend' either but still great fun to see people celebrate Victoriana, English history, the gothic aesthetic and gothic-horror literature. For some, the music scenes of their youth are continually paid homage to and that DIY anti-establishment artpunk vibe is the most sacred aspect of their interpretation of a 'goth weekend'. What everybody is there for is none of my business. I'll always find things that make sense to me and are worth celebrating and participating in. At least the gently curious, festive 'normies' of all ages are there with good energy and a kind curiosity about it all instead of an ugly, goofy menacing ridicule of the participants. Whether the people there want to trade rare 'Part 1' 7 inches with me, chat about gothic literature or just sit and have a beer and talk to my husband about the Industrial Revolution and steam engines...all cool with me. I'm too old to keep nursing a fiercely proprietorial attitude to any 'authentic scene' for 'genuine goths' nor am I concerned about lack of cheap accommodation. If you're personally thinking of going, return to this thread and I'll personally reserve reasonably priced accommodation for you and your party-- it's my forte and I'd be be quietly thrilled to triumph on your behalf. I'm glad festivals like this bring so much international interest and income to independent businesses in and around Whitby. Goth weekend is only twice a year, unless I'm mistaken and it's changed to just once. Each to their own and I hope you have a fantastic 2023 doing what you most enjoy as often as you can. ✌🦇
@@ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293 I and many others who attended, feel it's no longer a Goth weekend but a Cosplay, which I would normally have no issues about if it has not been at the expense of this truly brilliant music festival. York would have been a far better place to have held a costume event and left Whitby to the Goths, in what was a quiet, cheap out of season holiday. I don't go anymore due to the above reasons but most things I knew from a Goth perspective have changed, not for the better. Happy 2023 to you too.
@@benfletcher9659 I think we'd agree on far more than we'd disagree on. It definitely has a goofy cosplay element now and the substance just isn't there anymore. I could not agree with you more. This happened to the punk scenes I grew up in too; the slick Californian pop punk corporate nerds wanting to be 'rock stars' in cahoots with uptight academic rich kids dominating the scenes with their suffocating identity politics/scenester behavioural policing along with their glossy overproduced fanzines ruined the entire thing beyond recognition and it just all died a slow undignified death. Whitby Goth festival is very generalised now and the net has been cast so wide. There's just no connection, no running narrative when it comes to 'goth' as you and I both understood and knew it, that much is clear. It's all very corporate and mainstream; just like the goofy social media/UA-cam kids asking with a straight face 'Can you be goth if you don't like the music?' What on Earth has happened to humans for them to ask something so monumentally empty-headed?! I could facepalm and cry at the same time at this absurd superficial, purely cosmetic fashion-trend nonsense. There's no substance and the past sure is another country; we DEFINITELY did things different there. These kids have no idea what it was all about, going by what I've seen and heard in this era. The internet is largely responsible for this destruction but the entire recipe eludes me. Things sure have changed and so much NOT for the better. Anyhow, good vibes for 2023, must not rant and cry into my coffee like a cliched punk...😉🤣🤣

None of them are members of the Goth scene but just people who think they are "a bit mad and loopy".

Sadly it was not about dressing up but been who you were. Most Goths wore what they did anywhere else but most of this lot don't do this at home. Sad what it's become.

I was in Whitby today and they are still the same, that’s how the locals dress.
When it first started in the 1990's, people used to put signs up of "No Goths". However, this changed when they smelled the £££. Plus, it will be another generation of B&B/shop owners now.

@@hollyjeffords680 Well not ban, just feel unwelcome. When Whitby Goth Weekend (the music festival) first stared in 1994, pubs and B&B's used to put signs up in windows saying "No Goth's". I guess they soon stopped once the £££ came it. I suspect many of them have retired and it's a new generation of owners.

The Steam Punk crowd started showing up in the mid to late 2000's, mostly walked around as it's not a very music based scene. Had quite over the top outfits, people took their photos, which circulated and the public though it was a fancy dress weekend and "joined in" it's just avalanched more out of control each year. Shame as when it was just the Goths is was a bloody good weekend.

I think its better as a Whitby fancy dress event because there will be more variety such as Goths, Victorian, Steampunk, Tudor, even spooky like dracula, Frankenstein etc ... that's so much better and would attract many more people of all ages as most Goths tend to be on the younger side....

I went to Whitby for years from 1999 to 2008 when Laughton's shut down. It was a Goth festival please check the history and Goths are not all younger, some of us were there at the beginning. Some of these outfits will cost a fortune and we tended to buy from charity shops and customise ourselves. Something has been lost, here.
@@adelemarieish I think if I were a Goth living in the area I would perhaps start a new annual or monthly Goth meet up or festival especially if the original Goth gathering has now changed or been over taken by others who wear non Goth clothing

Had a 5 year break and returned in 2014 and 2015 but wasn't the same vibe. Since WGW lost the Spa, it's probably declined even more so that I doubt we will go back. Still look Goth but really not in the scene anymore.

It was originally a music festival, in 1994 people in the UK Goth subculture arranged to meetup in Whitby, out of season so was quiet and cheap. They chose Whitby as it had some relevance to the Goth subculture (e.g. Dracula). For 5 days it was a series of live bands, clubs and markets that attracted about 1300 Goths twice a year in April and October. Then around the mid 2000's Steam Punks started attending and would wear some very elaborate costumes, people started taking their pictures. These pictures circulated and over time more photographers turned up, circulating even more photos that attracted more people (most of whom simply walked around town and didn't attend the Goth events). Eventually going away in October was no longer out of season, so more people would go to Whitby, which has caused prices to inflate. Many people said photos and now dress up, so it's just avalanched out of control to what you see here and isn't really a Goth weekend. It didn't help that the main organiser then lost the main venue, so pretty much confined to a pub now. I can't see the original weekend lasting much longer and Tomorrows Ghost will be the main event but on a different weekend. Sad really as it was a brilliant event.

I've wanted to go for years by boy online fighting between goths with "Your doing it wrong your not a real goth" type of crap has put me off. I'd rather go on a normal day when you can actually walk around without bumping into people and there's no price hiking.

@@benfletcher9659 Those that go to this Fancy Dress show wont have heard of Jo Hampshire who arranged the first meeting of 40 pen pal's meeting in the Elsinore in 1994. Its lost its soul and is just a money making racket for Whitby. It needs a name change don't call it a Goth Festival when it isn't one. The real Goth festivals are in Germany with the M'era Luna being my favourite.

@@BlackDahlia776 I knew her and so did loads of people I knew. Most of the public won't know there is a music festival on in the evening. They think it's dress up and walk about town and have picture taken. I think a lot of them have had midlife crises and fancy themselves "a bit mad and loopy", as opposed to any real Goth mindset. 99% of them would not do this at home.
