David, I really enjoy your videos. Word of advice, the Thrumometer's maximum recommended temperature is 140F so you probably should not sterilise it with boiling hot wort.
Yes ive been told this before. Having said that ive been using it with alot of brews now with no issues at all. I did try to remove it on my last brew but found the only way of doing that now is to cut the silicone. Glad you are enjoying the videos :)
Just had my second date with the Grainfather and think I may be falling in love! And even more, I discovered David Heath who is so helpful, wise, and interesting. He just talks a little funny. Great job and thanks so much.
When do you think you will post your updated Irish Red Ale recipe and brewing guide please David as I am keen to see this before brewing one up; I seem to remember you mentioning end of Jan 2021? No pressure 😃
This guide is about 75% made. I also need to wait a little longer before filming the end beer and taste test. The plan being to have this ready for early next month.
David I notice your Carafa Special EBCs are different to that listed on Irish homebrew sites. I would have thought that for the type it would always be the same (Weyermann). Just an observation.
Another excellent and informative video David, cheers 👍 I've recently been using a hop spider l made which I've found makes draining and cleaning a lot easier, have you considered one of those? All the best 🍺
Hi David, Thanks for another excellent video. When you are brewing small batches like this, do you tilt the GF or do anything to maximize the wort that gets pumped out. Or does it put too much strain on the pump?
Great video as always David, thanks. Just wondering what Thrumometer connection size you purchased? (as you can get a 1/2" and also 3/8" tubing size). Cheers!
Damo Its the 3/8" version, fits perfectly and a fantastic addition to the system. Be sure to get some extra silicone hose to give yourself an extra extention for wort out splashing :)
Hi David, firstly congrats on a great channel. I subscribed about 6 months ago and I'm slowly working my way through the videos. My question is about liquid yeast starters with a stir plate. Do you ferment yours at room temperature or put it in the fridge and control the temperature. Cheers!!
@@DavidHeathHomebrew Thanks David. I noticed in the video that you had the starter and stir plate sitting out on the bench but your answer explains why!!
I really love the nice flow you have during both mash and sparge!! I can't achieve this nice flow even though i don't cruash my grains too fine. I'm wondering what is the spacing you use when you crush your grains? I'm using 0.05 and i'm considering to crush finer to increase my efficiency. thx for your videos you are a great help!
What do you put witht he overflow inlet? is it the grain cover, no? actually never seen that I have the cover myself.. no wonder the grain flowed through the pipe.
I did what you said with doughing in, I used a 1L water jug to add the grain, and I got 7 points higher on my pre-boil gravity to what Brewfather said I should get. My efficiency was set to 68% but now it looked more in the region of 75%. Is it possible?
@@DavidHeathHomebrew two questions: Which beer of yours do you always have on tap at your house? Do you still make the old recipes you did in the beginning? Regards Ruan
Hi David. I love your videos. I watched them for a few months before making the plunge into GF brewing. I'm a grizzled all grain veteran of the Igloo cooler mash tun variety and look forward to this new system. I took my new GF on its maiden voyage this weekend and chose an Irish red similar to the one in this video as my first brew attempt. It went great, but I have a question for you. One of the system additions I took from your videos is the Thrumeter. My question is when sterilizing the chiller can you run sterilizing temp wort through it long term without damaging it? Your videos seem to show you doing just that, but the sticker on my Thrumeter says to avoid using above 140F. Interested in your thoughts! Can't wait for your next video! Cheers!
Mike McGinley Great to hear that you are loving my videos :) Im nearing completion of another brew day video at the moment. The thrumeter is for sure a useful tool but it seems they are being very careful on its use. I have been using it for a year now without removing it with no issues. The temp gauge is a simple temp sticker and should it fail I can replace it with very little cost but so far so good. Working perfectly still :)
Thanks David. Good points and good advice. I appreciate it. One other thing occurred to me. Is there a good GF profile for Beersmith? The one in the Equipment list I have is way off from the GF calculators. Can't wait for the GF Recipe Creator. I'm sure it will be all sorted there. Thanks again and I look forward to the next brew day video. Cheers!
Mike McGinley Beersmith isnt really suited to all in one systems sadly. I use it to build my recipes but water volumes are done with the GF App. You will find some more reasonable profiles in the files section of the fb gf users group. Worth a try as a comparison.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew I ordered a blichmann thrumometer has not arrived yet but was just wondering if a stick on temp gauge like used on fermenters superglued to the outflow of the wort chiller would be a good poor man's version.
Hi David, thanks for your awesome videos they have helped me a lot. When you start your mash-out for ten minutes, do you start that ten minutes as soon as it hits 76c or as soon as you alter the temp on the controller? Cheers.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew well if you look on images in google the majority of pics are as ours. I’m positive the production aim was not to have an asymmetric distribution of light.
maybe after a bit haha. Just spent all my extra beer budget building a keezer. Also still waiting for them to give us poor north american bastards the Grainfather connect module too. I believe it will be the default unit that ships with newer GF's.
Haha yeah, well usually you guys get the good stuff first, So this is a much needed turn of events :P Yes the connect will be standard on all new GF units.
David, your videos are my favourite on Grainfather brewing, many thanks.
Thanks Andrew, thats a nice compliment :) Much appreciated. Just uploaded a new video by the way...Chili ale :)
Another great video. I like the tip about pausing the mash, I never thought of that.
wrongway2001 Great , glad you liked it :)
First ever brew was extract Irish Red. 3 years later I think it's time for a GF redo of this popular brew. Thanks for the inspiration.
The Irish red is an awesome beer for sure :)
Another interesting video as always. Need to get myself a sink strainer and will definitely try the 'new' cleaning idea. Thanks and HHBW. Cheers

Planning to brew one after Easter 🐣

Excelent video. I resurected a British Ale II some time ago with great results. Lovely cleaning tip, I will defenetly use it. Cheers

Ken Fuller Ive got one, just cant use it on these small batches. Hop socks work well also but generally I drop the hops in naked.
Great video David! Many tips and tricks as always :)
Do you make water adjustment for your brews?
Lars Bach Vinje Glad you enjoyed it :) Water wise im very lucky, its very pure here. I do a little ph adjustment.

David, I cannot find much info on crystal 300, would this be equivalent to c 120 (120L) malt?
It is approx 113L but as close as you can get will be fine :)

Hey, thats great to hear :) Yes all mash steps start time wise once you have reached the temp. So in reality you are mashing for longer.
Great video again! How do you get that high efficiency? I don't get higher than 58%. I'm crushing my malt at 1.2mm.

Its more a case of where the leds sit. Not a fault as such, more of a quirk.
