If you read the liner-notes to "The New Abnormal" you will see that musician Billy Idol is credited for composition on the song "Bad Decisions". In this excerpt I talk to Julian Casablancas and Albert Hammond Jr. about the song and why Billy Idol is credited on the album.
I interviewed @The Strokes back in November 2020. It was a Zoom call between me (Copenhagen, Denmark), Julian (N.Y. hotelroom) and Albert (at home in L.A.). The internet connections could have been better but we managed to have some great moments together 🖤🔥🎸

It annoys me how critics focus on the billy idol inspiration, while completely ignoring the bad ass true chorus "pick up your gun" part. The "YOU, YOU DIDN'T LISTEN TO MEEE" part makes me shit my pants. Best part of the album imo.

I feel like "Bad Decisions" is a double rip-off of "Dancing with Myself" and "Melt with you." It doesn't matter though, a ton of great songs are rip-offs of earlier songs. Come Together by The Beatles is a rip-off of a Chuck Berry song, etc

Well, Hells Bells, what can I say? It took The Strokes management quite a long time to approve Julians CCTV-like picture quality (which is why I mix it up a bit sometimes), then my graphics-dude was struck by Covid-19 (all in good health now) + it took a long time to edit and colourgrade. When everything was ready, I was made aware that The Strokes was nominated for a Grammy and then thought "hmmm, let's wait at see what happens". So here we are 4 months later... 😂 Anyhow, I'm just happy that I was finally able to put it out. Learned to hard lessons along the way, so that in the future I can release a few days after recording 🙏🏻

Julian Casablancas doesn't smoke a lot of marijuana, he just speaks slowly, with a lot of intent and pretense and self deprecation and awareness. He's a thoughtful dude
If he were a teacher he'd still be explaining to kids in their midteens a multiplication table.
He'd start with explaining where the symbols for numbers came from, like who decided to draw them that way. How it got accepted globally. Who was against it. Would've talked about all the other numerical systems. Would've gone astray with 01 for a year or two. Showed thern the matrix movies and everything.
