For me, all I want is a p-bass with flats, and p-bass with rounds, and a 5 string active humbucker thing, and of those, I stay on the p-bass with rounds 85% of the time. It's the best. 🎉
@@PeeFunk2008yeah rounds are 100% more common in rock and punk, I think I. 10+ years in the rock music scene with people of my age (from teens to early thirties) only one bassist I’ve played with has used flats

Slap on a Jazz always sounds good but I always liked it better on a P bass.... Something about that husky midrangey sound slapped is just a little funkier.
So so, true! Flats vs. Rounds truly is apples to oranges. They both have their place! What’s really amazing is the versatility of the pbass! The Swiss Army knife’s of basses! aka, GOAT!!!
I love the fact that I didn’t discover the sound of flats on a P until I had been playing one for a few years. I’m now on a hunt for a couple of P basses to have one for flats and one for stainless steel rounds (because it does make a difference).
Just cutomize a bass where they have 2 P pickups in 70s J bass positions And it will become the most versatile monster Dont forget to use blend instead of individual volume (kinda super complicated to do for 2 P pickups tho)
I love how using roundwounds feels so new / unique to jazz and blues folks when the majority of bassist, especially outside of the jazz and blues genre actually uses roundwounds as their main choice of string. 😅
That’s why I have a 6 string with tape wounds that sounds great and chunky, while I have my 4 string p bass Yamaha which has those jazz roundwounds on it, I forget what their called rn but jaco used the same string, they sound a gritty, with a bit of cherry sound to it, the metal string gives it that extra dynamic and clank.
I love how they think everyone starting out is gonna buy flats. 90% of the strings ive seen in stores are some kind of roundwound sets and with the huge price jump to flatwounds being about 60$ a set. I just dont see many beginner's or average players having Flatwounds unless the song really needs that level of warmth in the tone. Technique on a P-Bass (or a Jazz) is understated; just when you find the perfect tone, it will “bark” or “honk” on you if you lay into it. The StingRay is more forgiving with its wider dynamic range.
@@paulhavrilak honestly I find a jazz bass more forgiving than a ray… I’m ver fortunate to own all three and of the three i feel like the jazz bass makes me laziest in terms of being able to dial in a tone with two pups and tone ….. lots of variety for sure but p bass you have to be conscious of your decisions and with a ray you have to know when to unleash and when to tame the beast ….. favorite of all my basses is a ray since I grew up with one.l but if I had to have only one as a tool for the rest of my life the pj for sure
@@hectorreyes6884Agree about the Jazz Bass, I use flats and run 100% on the neck pickup, and 75% on the bridge pickup, and 40% on the tone knob. I have to rehearse a few more hours to build enough strength to play my StingRay or custom XB-75 fretless with medium-light roundwounds!
