My specialized turbo levo wheelies pretty good even though it is a 54 pound bicycle. I set the acceleration response to 100% so it pops up really easy and I think the weight of the bike actually helps me. My EMTB buddies think I'm a nut but any bicycle can be a good wheelie bicycle. Thank you for the inspiration! I'm 57 and I am finally getting it dialed. When I was young I simply thought I didn't have a good balance and no one told me that I have to practice practice practice. I love UA-cam for all the learning you can do. When I do something sexy on the trails all my friends say oh geez Richie has been watching Jeff Kendall weed videos again!
Love all your videos, your enthusiasm is contagious and make me want to ride! Curious about the motivation to make the bike longer and slacker with the angle headset. Can you elaborate and define what you feel the improvement is/was?
This is brilliant riding! Would love to see you manual a huge wheelbase bike to show everyone how it is (or isn't) possible. Wheelbases, bike weight, and rear centres are growing, all working against easy lifting of the front. Paul Aston is loving his 500mm chainstay bikes lately, but says he can't manual them, and I know he is good at manuals. Where is the limit? It seems too common for XL enduro bike riders to complain that their bikes don't manual well, and I know you can show what's definitely possible.
Hey there temptation, I have a Transition Spire here with fairly long (445mm) chainstays. I can manual it, but it's a LOT of work to manipulate it through turns and tight sections of trail. I'm not a fan of really long bikes. As someone small and light, I need to be able to steer around and avoid bumps- not charge right over them. Here in the USA, it's very rare for sanctioned trails to ever be steep enough that long stays provide more benefit than drawback.
Thing I love about the internet: I never thought I would hear a guy make a CEO / Cayman Islands joke on a mountain biking channel; but I did, so now I'm a subscriber. 😂😂
Hi Jeff! (@JeffKendallWeed), I've loved watching all your videos throughout the years! I'm going to be visiting Bellingham for the first time this October and I'm wondering what trail/s you'd recommend for an intermediate rider? I ride a Pivot 429.
Nice, well I'm not the best at manual-ing or wheelies I can do them.....and honestly, my 2015 Specialized Enduro wheelies better than my Ripmo V2 (don't tell Ibis). Just ordered some LMNT too, I've been noticing I needed more than just water, even though I drink a ton of it! Thanks Jeff!
Thanks Mike! Glad you're enjoying the LMNT, that stuff is great. I like the way the Ripmo wheelies, same for the Stumpy, but the last Enduro I rode was an S4 and I SUCKED at wheelying it! Go figure! I'm pretty short so the S3 is a must.
No, Schraeder is sweet. It's a shame our industry was too stuck up to admit it's a better design back in the 90s/2000s. Presta is garbage for our needs, but it's what we decided we preferred. Maybe another Pet Peeve video needs to happen!!!
It’s the classic stingray with the high handle bars. I could wheelie for miles, it was like a trials bike. But that’s all it’s good for is wheelies haha.
During a manual, when youre controling the bike while turning, do you counterbalance with the outside handle (eg. right side), relative to where the bike is going / leaning (eg. left turn)?
How would a 150mm fork work on this bike? Could you go all the way up to a 160mm fork? Or would that change geometry too much? I've got a Pike with a 160mm air shaft I'd love to throw on this bike (could get a 150mm air shaft if that'd be better).
I wish I had a 150mm air shaft, but I haven't found one in stock, and have enough bikes in the current rotation that I havent dove into the travel adjust yet!
I dont understand why you say that a bike with shorter chainstays is better for wheelies- i feel like while it might be tougher to get a bike with longer chainstays up, its always easier to balance because cg is further off the ground which allows for lees precision required to stay up Like balancing a yardstick on your finger vs. A toothbrush.
the short chainstays just make the bike more responsive in a wheelie overall, allows you to pop the front end up super quick and maneuver around the trail on one wheel easier. A super long bike will have a higher balance point in a wheelie and won't be as responsive, so it takes a lot more effort to keep it up on the back wheel.
Thanks to LMNT for support in 2023! Head to www.DrinkLMNT.com/Jeff to get your free sample pack with any purchase.
This could be the start of a cool mini series. Love watching wheelies and manuals.
Thanks- hmmm, maybe a monthly impossible wheelie????
@@JeffKendallWeed Hells yeah!
You are really on to something with this content .. riding relatable trails in a way all of us wish we could .. inspires me to ride every time.
It's actually amazing how good you can manual on a bike trail! On a flat road is one thing but up and down and over bumps 🤯🤯🤯
Thanks Kaz- I'm a lot more interested in weird, tricky manuals than boring ones on the road!

Now I want to try that frame and see how it compares to my #1 manual bike - the SC 5010 V3 with a 2.6 on a 35mm rim
Sweet tips and ridig! Been waiting on this one, too. Kona killed it with the 134 DL.❤
Thanks Coby! Yeah the 134 is a lot of fun!!!

You should try the Marin Rift Zone, short chainstays but bigger reach than the Kona, might be better balanced?
Jeff I keep saying to myself wow. Bravo
Jeff! Well done buddy!

I'm glad to hear you say "SHRADER VALVE IS SUPERIOR". I have a pair on every wheelset. Better, best. Period.
Yeah I wish it was easier to find good tubeless style schraeder valves. Reserve are a great 2nd choice!
Great video, Jeff. Hope you are doing okay. Would love to take your wheelie class.
Thanks BikeLife!!!!
You just skimmed over that Schrader valve thing pretty quickly... Were you being facetious?

Ah the Jeff Ward wheelie from the opening scene of On Any Sunday comes to mind!!!!
During a manual, when youre controling the bike while turning, do you counterbalance with the outside handle (eg. right side), relative to where the bike is going / leaning (eg. left turn)?
"A wheelie is a low cost form of meditation". Wise words, given a long enough wheelie.
And a fun form of it too!!!
what is the frame size and your hight?

What's the green band on the left side of the bars for?
Glasses on the climbs- they don't get sweaty over there
What is the headset that you’re using for changing the HT angle?
It's a works components -1° angle adjust headset. Feels great!
Superior Schrader valve user here, I drill all of my wheels and run stans tubeless Schrader valves.....I don't know why anyone still uses presta.
Rally chopper was the best wheelie i ever had! It couldn't corner for sh*t though😂
Rally chopper? The Schwinn Stingray?!
Wheelie a stingray bike. With the high bars. Banana seat. Those are epic for stand up wheelie and manuals.
Ah, like the intro to On Any Sunday, when a 5 year old Jeff Ward wheelies for like 8 city blocks!
What rc is on the red cabinet?
Probably an old Slash 4x4, with a ProLine body. I also keep my Tekno SCT4.10 around, and that truck generally wears the original Slash body.
The giant sensor box lol
You ride better on one wheel than I do on two.
Hahaha thanks Noon!

Horseshoes & hand grenades
Ahhhhhh that's the saying!
I tried to wheelie but I am just to big to do it.
No not a excuse. It takes a lot of practice to do wheelies. It’s not a weight or hight thing.

wheelieeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Sorry Jeff but nothing wheelies like a fatbike... specifically the alrighty Fatback Skookum
I've only ridden one fat bike, and yeah it did wheelie easy, but any off-the-ground stuff and the rebound killed it.
If a bike is really easy to wheelie isn't it hard to stay on top of when your climbing? Not for you but say an average human.
