  • In our video we ask if it is worth visiting the Roman Baths. How have they made history interesting? Is it worth the ticket price? Is it too busy to see the artefacts and displays?
Join us as we seek the answers to these questions and share with you our thoughts about the experience.
NB We paid for our tickets and we’re not asked to make this video by The Roman Baths.
    The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on UA-cam, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
Unfortunately we cannot answer comments coming in more than a week after the publishing date of the video.
    Frequently asked questions:
    Do we do meet ups?
We regularly receive requests to meet up from viewers and subscribers, but unfortunately we do not have availability to be able to do this.
The channel is a very time consuming hobby, fitted around our employment and family commitments. Setting aside time for meet ups, means that we are not able to film and edit our weekly videos that you love to watch.
If you happen to bump into us while out and about, we will be more than happy to have a quick chat!

Fun fact: when I was a toddler, I spent every day of my life at the Roman Baths. My father, you see, was an Archaeologist & Geologist and in 1960, he became Curator and CEO of the Roman Baths. He ran the Museum for a total of Seventeen years, retiring in 1977 to purchase a sixteenth century Inn in the Mendip Hills. To be honest, I can't remember anything after that (HI-CUP) LOL.

I am so grateful to view your vlog of Bath! It is my friend’s favorite town who is an architect teaching The Classical Orders in architecture. I had no idea how beautiful and carefully curated this site was preserved! He said Bath is his favorite town! Hope to see it one day but if I don’t get there I have gained a great view thanks to you! ❤️🙏👩‍🎨👍

Thanks for that. I haven't been in the place for about fifty years, cycling down from London. It seems to have changed a lot. I'm sure it was a lot cheaper to get in then. But it looks like the visitor experience is a lot more educational now. Really do appreciate the update.

Love the video. I haven’t been to the Baths for years despite going to Bath regularly and it’s much more interesting now than when I last went. When I tried the water it was from the fountain in the Pump Room and it tasted awful.
I attended an evening Christmas function there a few years ago and we could walk around the baths lit by flaming torches. It was magical.

Many years since visiting The Roman Baths, I found it very interesting, but I thought the water was disgusting 🤢 great video brought back memories of a time less troubled and a joy to be alive, whatever we paid for admission then was well worth it for the history lesson….all in all a very enjoyable experience, a great reaction from Andrew tasting the water 😅 five out of five for me “👌”

''You can tell its old - silent movies....!!'' - laffed out loud at that one Andrew! I went about 60 years ago on a family holiday, can't say I remember much about it! And don't need to go again now after watching your excellent video! 😀

The interactive aspects to this fantastic archeological site should make it appeal to so many more people. It appears to be very well laid out, and more of an experience than 'just a museum'. There is competition for tourist dollars, but I'd definitely prefer to see a 'one of a kind' place like the Roman Baths than a theme park, of which we have (too) many here in the U.S. I believe the tall hat worn by the one actor could indicate he was a freed slave, or possibly a slave who was a foreign captive. This is the short version, as a full discussion of Roman headwear would keep us here all day, lol. :)

I looked yesterday at booking a visit for my Birthday in May, but I just could not justify the £27 admission. People are struggling and should be able to visit but are being alienated, which is a shame, good video as ever guys.

BS. Medication wasn't from Romans. All indigenous groups lived off plants.
Sanitation ?? What has that done in the year 2024. The Romans destroyed the earth's land and crops. The same evil empire running the globe today under a different label.
Wine is MUCH older than the Romans. Biblical times they never used toxic chemicals !
Road you say. Roads were built in this country for horse and carriage for the WEALTHY. Yeah its gotten us so far with modern cars too big for the roads to share with other cars. Let alone parking.

I visited this place once, but that was around 30 to 40 years ago. All I can remember was tasting the water as it came out of an old pipe protruding from the wall. It was foul! Looks as if they've brought the experience up to date. The film of the inhabitants going about their daily lives is new and I think you were talking to a couple of actors, dressed for the part. But £27! That's a bit steep.
In Winchester, there is a similar display set around the Roman/Saxon period. Here again, you have film of people going about their daily tasks, plus live actors in costume, who will interact with visitors. Very similar but half the price and the admission ticket allows you to visit as often as you like for 12 months.
An interesting and in depth video from you both.

I love anything to do with Roman history. Unfortunately I’m allergic to the City of Bath. My ex husband’s family live there and every time I would visit I got a horrific migraine…..my neurologist stated I’m highly sensitive to the minerals/sulphur from the spring so I can’t visit anymore…..just glad I’m ok in Rome and Pompeii then 😂

Thank you so much for your reviews. I'm going to Bath in 2 weeks for my 60th birthday treat.
After watching your video about the Thermae bath spa facility me and my daughter have decided not to go. Far too many poor and worrying reviews, and far too expensive for the poor maintenance especially given they made a million pound profit last year.
I have just watched your review of the old Roman baths and we will definitely be going. Thanks for the tips!

Lovely to see you again after the covid ❤ And great to get a view of the Roman Baths. I was there in August 2016 and I have the same impression now from your video as I had then. I really enjoyed my visit and it came alive by all the video tableaus and the actors who impersonated romans. It also displayed the history in a great way. I would have given it a 5 that time. But I don't remember the entrance fee. Thank you. Torunn 🥰
Edit: Corrected my visit from 1916 to 2016. 😂

    • @CornishWalkingTrails

During the video I film my phone at one point showing the email with the pricing.
We noticed a lot of discrepancy in pricing in the comments on Trip Advisor and could only conclude that they change regularly depending on the time of year. Technology allows this to happen now, I guess. Some comments on Trip Advisor were quoting £28 per person, but didn’t say when they visited.
I guess January is low season and cheaper.
      Sarah :)

Really enjoyed this Andrew and Sarah 🙏. I went about 25 years ago and loved it then too. Obviously non of the tech stuff then and I'm sure I would enjoy it again because of that 👍. I suppose most major attractions these days are that price or more, so I think it's just about weighing up what might interest you. I love seeing ancient stuff... and hubby says that's why I love him so much 🤣. I would give it a five but skip the shops too 😜😁💖🥰

The Roman baths are a wonderful survival but the 1 Star reviewers are indeed correct - too expensive.
I used to work as a curator and the attempt to 'privatise' the history sector has been a complete failure. Properly preserving and exhibiting things is a relatively expensive process and when such things were handled by county museums and so on it was the public purse that dealt with it, the museums being treated as a resource for the area, just like public parks and the like. When such places have to stand on their own financial feet it usually turns out that the interest in the past is not as strong as all that once the entry fees kick in!

Then there’s the clean air ( stealth tax) and parking charges depending on what you drive . Though I probably wouldn't agree with your term DUMP I appreciate the tourist trap bit. I myself was born in Bath:- my old Dad was the Curator of the Roman Baths for seventeen years and He too had endless battles with Bath City Council. Infact 'battles ' might be a bit of a weak description as he (my dad) was a one-man army to save Baths Georgian architecture;- a difficult time during the 60s as the Council at the time wanted to pull down various buildings to make way for what became known as BRUTILIST ARCHITECTURE. Thank goodness they in the end saw sense. God-speed.
