The restoration journey of my rare Kawasaki GPZ 750 TURBO continues! In this episode, I take the rebuild to the next level by removing the entire engine from the frame and tearing it down piece by piece. After sitting abandoned for who knows how long, this turbocharged beast needs some serious attention.

Nice job mate! Just subscribed to you one hour ago, you do an amazing job! Keep it up

@@stuartbridge-g1n Go on, you ca what?
Awww, your uncle is a terrble unexperienced person, if he was weling aroung the unprotected shafts and bearings and surfaces just like that,... because the spark-balls from the welding are falling and jumping everywhere, and also sticking to the smooth surfaces and holes, which than are getting damaged, and all that is than doing further damage in the engine if they are not discovered where they are hidding and properly removed/cleaned. And, they Mostly Are hard 2 find . So, next time you can explain 2 him, that he needs to Carefully/Properly/consistently shield and protect all the vital parts around the welding position, from damaging of the engine at the end. Thanks for the video.
Good to see a lot of positive and supportive comments. Keep going Ry, your graft is entertaining to watch. Keep doing what makes you happy!
Thats because he deletes all the comments he doesn't like. Just like Del boy and just as clueless.
@@GeorgeEI7KO Oh, I didn't know that. Aint watched Del Boy's vids for while, I remember he used to get a bit moody.
I adore your can do attitude. You are always so positive and upbeat, even in the face of adversity.
My BF brother had this bike, I remember riding it and the his brother telling me you cant just stop and shut off the bike, you have to leave the turbo cool down. I will be watching this til the end, so happy. Cold AF in New Brunswick , Canada right now, so this is a great.
Great videos . Look forward to the next one
Coming soon!
For sure you need a set of J.I.S (Japanese Industry Standard) screwdrivers and those rounded screws should be a thing of the past.
A standard pozi or philips crosshead just doesnt grip the screw and strips the head making life difficult trying to remove it.
Great progress so far cant wait for the next instalment 👍
Brave man tackeling this bike! As for the screws on a Japanese bike, for everyone out there, get a set of good JIS screw drivers!
+1 on the jis screwdrivers, game changer
JIS screwdrivers are an absolute must when working on any Japanese bikes !!!
@@nickrider5220 plus one to that - a game changer. If only I had JIS screw drivers back in the day. Get some and you will never regret it.
@Tijn1972 Get a Vessel impact driver, hammer operated. I have had mine since 1968 and it has never failed.
Yes, he is brave enough (or blind) at removing the part of a block together with the crankshaft without the protection of falling it out on the floor from the block at 18:36. I dont want 2 imagine if that cranshaft would fall back into the engine onto the bearings and surfaces , damaging it all. My heart already hurts me when i am just slightly just thinking about this.
Done this before solo with an old air cooled Kawasaki - the trick I used, was to lay the whole bike on its side, then lift the frame away from the engine. Much easier - Also always use JIS Screwdrivers - [Japanese Industrial Standards screws]
Same here with engine removal/refit in a 1978 GS1000 about 25 years ago after powder coating the frame. 👍
Waving the ring finger now that was funny HINT HINT matey 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Only recently came across your Channel and noticed you are very close to me. Keep going mate very entertaining I have a Isle of Man gsxr 750
Great video and great work - a joy to watch. Look forward to the next episode.
Thank you very much!
A very iconic bike , i love it
Can’t wait to see what’s in store for the project! Picked up an 85 GPZ750 (non turbo) here in the US couple months back & I’m totally in love!
Nice work the old bike the 750 turbo was a classic back in the day I grew up with bikes all my life my first was a ap50 and the gp125 and my bro had cd250n then gpz600r and rg500 I have a tl1000s and had her 19yrs now love my bike
Found this of interest , lucky you found a reasonable example to rebuild , its a lot cleaner than mine , unfortunately i left it under a proper bike cover and the condensation has really made a minter , not . Will be following this build as reason mine was off the road to begin with was starter motor packed up ,and was told it was internal .. it is not , though sprag clutch looks to be , they do bump start easy though , just push at walking speed and dump the clutch in 1st and shes away , yes speaking from experience . From sounds of it you going to be doing something 'not stock ' with yours ! . Little bit of info .. if you didnt know ... the softest setting on the front anti dive is stiffer than the highest on the GPz 750 n/a model , the front brake hoses are Teflon lined , the front brakes easily lock the front wheel , the frame is beefed up over the stock GPz , the cylinder head is meant to be the same as a Z650 ! none of the engine parts are the same - apart from the cylinder head - as any other Kawasaki Z/GPz engines , the turbo is meant to be the same as fitted to the Nissan Micra Japan only turbo car !
Hope you rebuild the forks etc , as thats another part I need to do to mine , need a fork tube ! ... Have Factory manual for the bike if you need any info , I might be able to help ?
Great Start, BoR 👍
Thanks ✌
Congratulations. You are so much better now compared to your initial efforts. Better approach. Better equipment. Bravo.
Thank you very much!
Well done good work Nicole 👏
More please. I have five of these and this is great.
Welding bolts on to the top of the screw will heat the threads up bit like the induction tools do to remove screws. I have used screw extraction bits but the screw is pants after that. However, generally you can get the new screws.
JIS screwdrivers. You didn’t mention them so assume you don’t have them. Those screws that “always cause problems” only ever caused me problems before investing in JIS screwdrivers, including impact driver bits.
I used to specialise in these back in the day.
Seen and cured loads with suspected turbo issues with excessive oil consumption and what yours is doing...
The oil scavenging system for the turbo gums up and carbonizes...sump off and scavenge pump from by drive sprocket and wash everything to death with high flash cleaner and compressed air... refit..sorted.
Never seen rings really wear..just the usual valve stem seals.
The injectors stick too!
If you do need a rebuild kit for the turbo, you can get the in the states £125!!!
Hope this helps...awesome fun bike when sorted.👍
I remember a guy had one of these when I was a kid i used to be mesmerised by it and the sound !!! Even tho by today’s standards it’s down on power there’s still something very special about it . Can’t wait for next instalment great video cheers
1st time I did over a Ton on one of these ( my brothers bike ) I had a GT250 ram air version at the time loved it ! Keep up the good work
Great video it takes me back to when I passed my test. I dreamed of having the turbo 750 but could only afford the standard one .👌
Just found your channel and love this video...looking forward to the next episodes....I intend to do the same as you when I retire from paid work!! Keep up the good work!
Been looking forward to this 🙌 I had a GPZ back in the day 🤔 98/99 I think but it wasn't the turbo I've always wanted a GPZ turbo 🥰
Nicole is a rockstar!!!
The last one of these I watched was the 250 wet dream.Going on that, this is going to be hilarious...
Tighten all the sermo connectors of the electronic module located on the rear fender. I repaired a turbo with a missfire doing this back in the day when I wrenched.
It IS quite often always the last bolt. Trick is to slacken all bar the last one, then do them all up again before you undo the last one. Same goes for the side casing screws.
I stripped one of these quite a few years ago, my mates brother wanted to get the frame painted do remember that engine is bloody heavy monster
Coming along nicely, really looking forward to seeing more.
Great watching you take that engine to bits. I've got the Air Cooled GPZ750A3. The parts look very similiar, but I've haven't got the know-how to copy this. Hoping to pick up some tips on the other jobs. Mines up and running but tatty, put 800 miles on it since Sept 24. Was going for a spin today ... but can't find my key to the chain FFS! Just practising DEEP Breathing LOL. Good Luck with your build.
They’re JIS, not ‘crossheads’
Stopped watching a while back but thought I'd take another look and your channel has come on leaps and bound in every way ... looking forward to seeing the gpz done, Top gun replica surely has to be the preffered route 😊
Top Gun bike was a GPZ900R 😉
Videos come along way since the first build! You’ve definitely got more knowledge! Keep up the graft! 💪
Great project! really looking forward to future videos.
Great vid and loads of progress made well done. Really enjoying this
On Japanese bikes you need JIS screwdrivers rather than a normal Phillips crosshead screwdriver.
Yep been there with uncooperative bolts and I also end up welding them. Great to know you have done things correctly.
Great job mate
I had to watch this video a few times just to get the full appreciation for the work done on this awesome bike from my younger days in the 1970’s & 80’s! In New York City back in the day, if you owned this bike, then you were the King Of The Hill so to speak! Alot of guys wanted it but couldn’t afford it as young men at the time! To see you basically bringing this Iconic bike back to life is extremely special to me! I truly appreciate your work, thank you. I can’t wait for your next episodes! 👍 😎🏍️💨🇺🇸✌🏾
Glad you enjoyed it!
There are many techniques to the removal of these screws and also there is a correct way to use an impact screwdriver.
Make sure you check the rubber dampers in the clutch basket, as they are known to deteriorate and then clog up the oil feeds including the supply to the turbo.
I might be having the clutch basket upgraded ;)
Can’t wait to see this awesome bike come together
An impact driver the type you hit with a hammer is a must when restoring old bikes
Great video again! Can’t wait to see what’s happening with the frame/wheels
Awesome work as always, was interesting to see the condition of the internals. Looking forward to what's happening next.
The “cross heads” are JIS you need the correct screwdriver for them so you don’t round them out!
Buy a set of JIS screwdrivers, Vessel are a good make. It will help you get the screws out!
historical bike !!!!!!!!!!!!!good work
Great job you should have taken the head to see if that broken stud could have got removed the same way, Also personally for such a rare bike I'd probably put it back to stock rather than upgrading it unless they are very subtle of course but then that's just my take on it. I must admit though seeing how bad things were when you stripped it down I'm surprised it ran at all.
Cracking vid mate, really looking forward to following this one,, I got a 1980's cb900f all stripped in my dad's garage waiting for me to restore and rebuild,, it's been over 10 yrs and it's still there lol... Hopefully 1 day il get it done lol
Great bike,I also restoring my old GPZ900R they are great bikes 😎👍
Quite a big turbo that
It's not uncommon for the fiber plates to be broken that's from beating on the bike. The turbo 750 are fun as hell. Especially when you hit around 7,000 RPM. the meaning of sit down into the bike and hold on becomes true when you kick the turbo in. I had both the 87 gpz turbo and regular 750 there fast as heck without even trying. They have there issues esespecially the vacuum pump fuel petcock.
I remember choosing the gpz600r over the 750 turbo. They were not easy to ride especially in the wet with horrendous turbo lag you got into trouble at unexpected times.
A steering damper is recommended, flex in the frame on GPZ 750's can cause the dreaded speed wobble. A friend said it was an terrifying experience at illegal speed on motorway.
Yes part 2 been waiting for this
Superb mate. Your Kahoonas are deffo bigger than mine 😂
I'd replace those stubborn oil pump screws with Allen hex screws if clearance allows 👍
yes I am watching a kit on eBay at the moment :D
Great upload this is a cracking project.
Please tell me you marked up those cam caps when you removed them?
Top man looking forward to the end result
VERY IMPORTANT. ❤ You must check the valve clearances. When you grind them in the clearance closes and you will burn the valves.
You must fit smaller shims. I used to grind mine to sizel😮😮😮😮😮
On older engines that have been apart a lot of times, I would be tempted to slightly under torque smaller bolts and add a little blue locktight
I would love to have the space and time to take an old bike apart and rebuild it. It’s never going to happen so, I will live that life through your videos :)
Nicole did awesome!!!!
Harris made a magnum with this engine, sold one back in the 90s.
Now THIS is gonna’ be a very interesting project sir… and yes, a lot of work for you … (and great films for your fans to watch)❤😅
Had two of these in 87 mental bikes
That was one of my dream bikes as a teenager….looking toward to this one😁
Good work mate
Thanks 👍
Awesome stuff mate, can't wait to see how this turns out!
I bought one brand new ,was a awesome bike in my 20s
I've got one of these in at my place of work at the moment, it's had a new turbo due to the seals going hard and leaking past. The customer couldn't get a genuine Kawasaki one but managed to get the exact same turbo from a dumper truck 😂
Awesome stuff mate... I was just about to say how lucky you were with the manifold bolts, then you snapped one! I looked at that engine stand... kinda glad I didn't go for it after watching this 🤣 Looks like you might be riding yours before I'm riding mine at this rate! Great job mate, looking forward to the next one
Thanks dude! plenty more to come and no doubt many more headaches! Don't know why we do it haha
I lost my license big time on my turbo! 136mph in a speed trap rolling off the throttle at Boxhill in the late 80s😂
Oh.and failing to stop and other offences!
BTW, they run nicely with just pipe from the turbo to the footpegs, she used to blow flames on the afterburn.
I recommend a fork brace and the best tyres you can currently get.
P. S I used zeebrite oven cleaner on the downpipe to bring em up nice and shiny 👍
Use to have one ex USA ,they versions had 14 psi boast nutters very fast in straight line
Nicole did great with the engine stand 👍
Cracking progress on the bike, just a heads up, before you put the crankcases back together give the starter clutch a rebuild even if it looks and feels OK, you'll be happy you did.
16:10 the challenge makes the ride better, are you still talking about bikes? 😆
Love it mate, good luck! 😎🤞🍀
Thanks 👍
You can do it. And Yes, it will be awesome. Greetings from Brazil.
Du kannst auch einen Phillips- Schraubendreher vorne etwas flacher Schleifen, dann funktioniert er bei JIS Schrauben auch sehr gut.
Love this mate.
A beautiful thing, good luck with her.
I like the way the head cylinder came off
Love these videos... 👍👍👍
More to come!
Nice Job , Wait till you have to replace the crank oil seals , to do that you will have to remove the flywheel/Magneto witch will be your biggest challenge you ever encountered. i had to cut it to bits to be able to remove it. Hopefully you are one of the rare lucky ones !!!
Nice channel 👍🙂
In the 80's a mate of mine had a verrry quick GPZ 750 turbo. He cut the exhaust to exit just under the bike, at an angle (straight pipe), turned up the boost and ran it on avgss. It ran away from a hit Suzuki GS1000 SC Yoshimura.....hint
Love the team work but hate to say you should have checked the valve clearances before removing the cams to save you a job later. I hope you are using JIS screw drivers and not Philips or Posidrive ones or you will wreck the heads.
well done
wow....the oil pickup strainer was completly blocked ? Oil starvation is not good :-)
Bought one brand new in 83' still the pride of my fleet with 77000 k's....Be sure to replace the clutch inner rubber dampers
Great video as always mate. Can’t wait for the next one. Love to see this bike running. Keep up the excellent work
Thanks 👍
I've always considered the phrase "teardown" too melodramatic for us Brits. Thank you for affirming my opinion 😂
Wot a tease. Bring on the moped again. Live your vids
Get her an engagement ring 💍 old boy she seems a good laugh
Maybe you should have a long hard think about fully restoring and keeping stock. Maybe getting original exhaust fabricated might be a challenge. A while back I checked out some classic bike sales adverts that fully restored GPZ750 Turbos can fetch £15 k to £20k. Just a thought.
