make your own food
People over portion in their own home more than restaurants / shops do. The lesson is to use scales and measuring cups / spoons.
@@safir2241 For beginners it's better to measure. After a while they will gain the ability to eye ball reasonable portions and amounts. I doubt they'd do it properly right away if they're transitioning from a very crap diet.
but how will you know that the calories labelled on the ingredients are accurate :////
@Will.J I agree. Go carnivore, all meat, none or very minimal of anything else.
@@dookiepuddle mostly meat will do terrible things to your body!!! Be careful hahaha - protein is great but too much meat can lead to heart problems/disease
I’ve entered a whole different level of ED rn

A 700+ calorie muffin!? dude wtf thats savage.
its dense in carbs and sugar most likely, which are heavier on the calorie spectrum. Its not all that surprising tbh
yes epically savage 👌🔥
and what u say about that 1295 wrap thing? it's more calories than a whole pizza.
@@edenlunareclipse8446 oh man, did you just say that carbs are heavy in calories. You know 1 gram of carbs has 4 calories while 1 gram of fat has 9 calories. More than double.
I did the math on a Costco chocolate muffin today because someone complained about it being a carbon . Costco muffins actually contain MORE calories from fat than from carbs. I'll say that again for the kids in the back: THE MUFFIN HAD MORE CALORIES FROM FAT THAN CALORIES FROM CARBS!!! You carbphobic people really need to learn how to do some basic math.
(Don't get me wrong. REFINED carbs, like white sugar and bleached flours, are absolutely garbage for you. But a lot of items that cause people to demonize carbs are actually EXTREMELY HIGH in fat.)
@@OdinsSage did I just get called racist against carbs? Did you just like your own comment? Do you have literally 0 idea how ketosis works? Find out next time on Dragon Ball Z.

+Ryan Smith yessss!
+Ryan Smith I started watching Casey since that movie. Time flies so so fast!
this is not "eye opening" video.. it is just plain false and disinformative
Don'tBeEvil how is this false and disinformative?
this scares me, when i'm on a diet i usually count calories as it helps me loose weight. i rely on the fact that calorie count is accurate but now ... idk
Just calculate the macros. Carbs - 4 cals/g, protein 4 cals/g, fat 9 cals/g.
Also sugar alcohols and insoluble fibers aren’t digested by the body, rendering them technically 0 calorie.
@@Idk-do1ui But the macros are inaccurate as well...
@@kaceywaceyy The FDA allows for a _margin of error_ of up to 20%. Key words, “margin of error”. Not just straight up lying. So they could be inaccurate, but it’s unlikely to be by a large amount.
@@Idk-do1ui i know, i am just reiterating that opposed to what you suggested, calculating the macros wont be any different than calculating the calories (it would be the same margin of error)
If you are losing weight than its working so I think counting calories isn't always accurate but at least it makes you more mindful of what you are eating.
This video omitted an important detail:
All of the calorie counts are over by about 10%-15%, because food manufacturers are allowed to take in the thermic effect of food when labeling for calories. So the calories on the label are the amount of actual calories in the food MINUS the calories used to actually digest it.
That "healthy" sandwich was bullshit though. Those people should be sued.
I would imagine the calorimeter accounts for that percent error.!
Interesting point!
@@felipetejeda7545 It does not. If it is unaltered, it accounts for the maximum amount of calories in the food.
That sounds like bullshit honestly. Why would something so deceiving and pathetic be allowed?
An individual's metabolism can vary considerably from person to person. Digestive disorders and heredity can play a huge role as well.
Now I'm even more paranoid about calories. Great
i wouldnt worry too much about exact calorie counting. its not effective for maintaining fitness and health. instead keep track of the individual macromolecules youre consuming. you want a majority of protein and fat, so eat a lot of chicken and eggs. and enough sugar to make your brain work, so around 35-40g is plenty. then you just want to minimize unneeded carb consumption. so maybe skip out on that mac and cheese for some southwestern chili and eggs, or whatever. point is, dont count calories, make calories count.
Eli Jenkins don’t bother with fitness tips this guy is just anorexic or got an eating disorder
do as me, cook EVERY meal you eat, snack on fruits or veggies, drink only water or coffee, exercice, learn about cooking and what's good for your body and is not and you should be ok
good, eat less and stay healthier.
If you're eating balanced and clean, that's the only way to eat, by cooking yourself tbh, even in Europe. You just have to train yourself into having a habit of cooking daily and eating fresh food daily, if you constantly can't find the time to do that, you need to FIND time for it, one way or another, cooking for yourself is just another habit that we have to learn, eating on the go is a habit, get rid of it and add a healthier one. :P You'll feel amazing. OH and most important, get rid of sugar, sugar is literal devil drug, so bad (normal daily dose of sugar comes naturally from naturally developed sugars in your food, we don't need ANY extra)
OMG, I always check and count calories from labels. And chances are.. I have been eating more calories than I calculated. Thanks for the great video.
Chances are that this video has only shown what a margin of error looks like. Nothing can be 100% accurate and this sandwich is a clear outlier, but this is definitely not conclusive.
I thought that there would probably be some laws for label accuracy or sth but guess not. Good thing i mostly make my own food and count the calories myself.
Calories are not poison, you'll just see yourself gaining weight or losing weight slower than you expected

McDonalds has been notoriously controlled on their labelling of calories, because they've been in the spotlight of skepcism for several years. McD is probably the most trustworthy on their labelling.
@@SuperIrbo On that comes, that McDonalds is an international Fastfood chain, and it would be really souspicious if a BigMac would have less calories than, say like the EU, where calorie counts a mesured strictly
Any chain which exists in countries within the EU will have accurate calories labelled.
@@toolworks interesting
I was thinking that😂
That pecentage of "unaccounted for" calories in most cases can easily be explained by imperfect portion sizes. Especially in the burrito where everything is basically "scooped" by hand.
In that case roughly 50% of the meals whould be below the stated calorie count.
A lot of these calorie counts come from entering the ingredients in a special dietitian software which draws off the USDA database for those raw inputs. It's very easy to input the wrong type of ingredient because there are so many different variables. Smaller companies are possibly more likely to have incorrect counts because they may hire someone with less experience. Same thing for vegan type products since the inputs might not be in the system.
The scoops aren't by hand. They're by tools meant to give you similar portions.
I dont think that was more of a blame thing, we all want more of whatever were buying when it's being made, but dont realise that it may cause our food to fall out of the stated range, I bet if chipotle portioned properly their would be many more complaints about it.
yeah, which is why Subway was most accurate. They use almost exact portion sizes.
I appreciate this video. I wish more people were aware of this. I’ve lost 76 pounds (and counting), &I’ve been overweight my entire life. I take my calorie counts VERY seriously. It’s so disturbing and ignorant of companies to give false information / not care enough to try.

The silver lining is, it doesn't really matter if labels lie. If you are used to tracking calories and your weight, then you have a pretty good idea on how much calories per day you can maintain your weight. If the foods you eat regularly underreport calories that would just mean that both your intake and expenditure are higher, but that doesn't matter, since you are still going to maintain weight if they are matched.

@BalticFin Not really, id say that bigmacs etc. are most accurate with the calorie description. They use already made patties, buns, exact amount of sauce with their sauce 'pistols'. The only thing that varies are veggies which they cut before service, but veggies have low calories anyways so..
@BalticFin Totally possible. Sometimes the sauce gin "misfires" and so give it an extra shot. Sometimes the cook's an idiot and uses the wrong sauce gun that has a bigger portion size per shot. Sauce: used to be a burger flipper.
Mcdonalds is a really big company. If they were wrong about their calories, they’d risk a lot of outrage.
@@maaikequest3760 starbucks isn't?
What a video. Loved how you showed the discrepancies in calorie counts in what you typically consume in a day because it made me think about how many calories I actually consume every day.
Well I guess its time for me to go to subway and get a footlong.
Kabs Log I love subways veggie delight with sweet onion sauce it's soo refreshing & delicious
Turkey Italiano is a good sandwich tbh
I've been a smoker for years. Watching your vids made me wanna quit and start taking care of myself. Maybe start jogging. I really enjoy ur videos and learn a lot. I also just had a lil baby girl.
Do it. Watch videos that motivate you every day and you'll see how happy it makes you to take care of yourself.
but casey lives a pretty unhealthy lifestyle...
I think Casey lives healthier than the average human. He runs and exercises a lot. He eats a mixed diet. Sure, he eats candy a lot, but if you run a lot, that's ok. Better to run 20km everyday and eat an oreo or two, than not eat the oreos, and also not run. Moderation is key, not elimination. No one wants to live in a bacon/burger/pizza/candy/cookie-free world. If you exercise a lot, and you only eat a bit, there's NO reason you cannot enjoy those things and still be very healthy. People who think that it's unhealthy to eat that stuff tend to be the least healthy in my experience.
Tyson Ogloff lol what are you talking about he runs 10 miles every morning
Tell her i said happy birthday
A handful of grapes has the same calories and sugar content as a can of Coca-Cola. But your body will utilize the grapes differently than the soda.
With the grapes you're getting fiber, Potassium, a small percentage of vitamins. With a can of coke you're getting empty calories. NO nutritional benefits from the soda, but yes... some from the grapes.
Look at my original comment. I never said the body utilizes the sugar content differently. I said they both have the same amount of sugar but the food themselves will be processed differently in the body. This is because of the nutritional content of course. But this is UA-cam why go into a molecular level of explanation? It was a simple factual statement. No need to troll. There are better things to argue in life!
Oh Jesus people are still not getting the point. It's about making healthy choices. Choose the tuna over the same caloric content of the cheeseburger. Choose the grapes over soda with the same sugar content. Choose whole wheat over enriched. The small things add up, yes they all differ in how the body utilizes them.
Mkay.
This is so so scary 😭 (TW)
That's why I always weigh my food if possible and I add a random 300 calories to my total log at the end of my day just in case I missed anything or the labels lied.
Ah but what if McDonalds are lying about their calories! Or maybe Snickers is lying? The plot thickens...
Big mac 500 calories: actual amount OVER 9000
Zach Crews I doubt that
Samantha C That is only when your big mac goes super saiyan
Well that would be called fraud and you could sue the shit outta' them
Relax super saiyan Mac
This has nothing to do with the video, but for those people who also have an ed, is your UA-cam feed full of videos to do with food or is that just me lmao
piece of shof my mild obsession with mukbangs is definitely contributing to the endless foody feed haha. I was diagnosed with anorexia when I was 12 years old but the obsession with food has never subsided, despite being what most would consider as “recovered”. Frankly, I don’t think anyone actually *fully* recovers from these things. We’re just in the process of recovering, indefinitely 🤷🏻♀️
yeah its pretty fucked up how algorithims unintentionally feed into people's eating disorders
That is correct!!
@@arianaelyse1160 someone finally put it into words, thank you :)

Subway always made me anxious and I would always totally overcount it, even with the lowest calorie-count bread and no cheese. This is pleasantly surprising
Awesome video. I always suspected those prepackage sandwich calorie labels were wrong. They just seem way too low for that much bread and filling.
I advocate eating real food you made yourself. Yet another reason for me to stay away from prepackaged, processed foods and restaurants in general. There is no way to know exactly what you're eating.
Melissa Lummis Well, I'm seriously lactose allergic. So prepackaged stuff is out for me now anyway ☺
That's a blessing in disguise, *****. I've developed a sensitivity to lactose AND gluten recently and I'm eating healthier than ever. Go figure. :-)
I for one welcome saturated fats and processed food. Bloody tasty. Keep your almond milk and kale chips to yourself Melissa! ; )
No almond milk for me Carl Sinclair, but kale chips are gooooood.
My ed is quaking😂😂😭

UA-cam recommendations in 2019:
The truth behind calorie labels by Casey Neistat from 2013
Same lmao
I feel attacked
yeah wtf
Know that I think about it why did UA-cam recommend me a 6year old video
Same but I'm still watching it
Me: has an Ed
Me: hopes everything has less calories than the packaging says
"Why not also enforce its accuracy"
because the government doesn't actually give a shit about you
It would be far too expensive to enforce. I bet those experts charged a lot to spend 10 hours testing those five or six items. Even if the calorie labels are inaccurate if they get people to make more healthy food choices that's a good thing.
plica06 very true.
edge
far too expensive and waste of time
the food companies would have to pay for the testing and prove thye did it
this made me so anxious about eating certain foods
Ah yes UA-cam why not put this in my recommendations 6 years later smh 🤦♀️
Tuxvo well no I’m just saying that UA-cam could’ve recommended this to me earlier lol
Tuxvo I’m glad that UA-cam does recommend videos at any age but I would have wanted to see this when I was struggling with eating healthy
I've entered ed premium now.
My Ed does N O T appreciate this bb❤️
