    They were so awkward with her at the end, she was being so nice, and trying to politely exit. The TEACHER ended up having to say, "Thank you for having me" before any student said anything, let alone a "Thank you for coming and teaching us" ... disappointing. This teacher went out of her way to bring EXTRA things to help them, 19:20, this reaction is pitiful, just staring at her nodding, some not even look at her, very unappreciative from all of them. Regardless of this, I hope she knows she did an amazing job, was very interactive, and even went the extra mile to provide papers and cards. I know plenty of people who would be head over heels!

    Isn’t John half Japanese?

    • @anix712
      @anix712 Рік тому +18

      I believe so, but it's not uncommon for children of mixed parentage, or children of immigrants to not be taught one or both parent's native languages, generally out of a fear that it will "other" them. Just like Rae is half Filipino, but was never taught Filipino/Tagalog. I've known several people, for example, who were of Mexican decent but couldn't speak (or knew very little) Spanish, because their parents only raised them to speak English. It's unfortunate, but again, not that uncommon.

    • @MsGrizzly
      @MsGrizzly Рік тому +4

      @@anix712Im a filipino born in Belgium, and its not that it would "other" us (its actually pretty cool to know other languages) its because we have no reason to learn it in a bi(tri ish)lingual country, mainly dutch and french.

    • @SurelyLightFoot
      @SurelyLightFoot Рік тому +4

      @@MsGrizzly in the USA it is very much so a defense mechanism to not pass on your heritage language to Americanize them. It’s unfortunate but fear of having your kids targeted because of an accent is real.

    • @fahn.k.3348
      @fahn.k.3348 Рік тому

      @@SurelyLightFoot that is very true. The stories I heard from some friends (now in 30s): they spoke a mix of english and portuguese in the same sentence when they were younger, got bullied, and they ended up forgetting portuguese for years even though they had been very fluent as a defense mechanism.

    • @stuntmonkey00
      @stuntmonkey00 Рік тому

      @@anix712 Usually it's just a more simple explanation than that; there's just no time. There are various shades of being bi-multi lingual. A lot of parents try to speak natively to their kids so that there is some connection, but it's super hard if your Japanese or Spanish is incomplete and you don't do it full time. It's very common for kids to grow up being able to hear the language but not comfortable speaking it. You don't really have the ability to speak it unless you are immersed in it all the time. It's one thing to pick up Japanese or Korean because you watch a lot of anime and Netflix, it's a different thing being able to speak it because you use it daily outside of the home.

    why do language teachers have to be mean?
    I don't appreciate the sass.
    if they are taking a 101 course, of course they don't know what they are saying or saying wrong...
    also "do you want me to come back next week? (until you are ready)(to scarra)"... kind of rude...
    maybe she is trying to be funny or entertaining... if that's the case, maybe it's fine...
    however, if she is serious about teaching, i don't think that is the right approach...
