I spent a lot of time in the NZ high country - a place you have to respect and be wary of.Places of sheer beauty and the weather can change really really fast . And yes I have been caught out in way wicked weather - not nice. I am glad you came and had an excellent adventure - and you came through it slightly battered but strong. Kia Kaha girl !
