My name is John Evans and I am the co-founder of Thpstrength, a company that focuses on vertical jump training for athletes. I currently coach three of the highest jumpers in the world; Isaiah Rivera, Donovan Hawkins, and Tony Crosby.
What separates me from other coaches in the industry is that I have worked with a majority of the top track and field coaches. Here is a brief overview of my journey:
14: I completed most of the popular vertical jump programs with limited success, and began searching for better answers in text books.
15: Hit my first dunk at 5’10” and started reading scientific literate and training journals from elite track and field athletes
16: Began training under Mike Young, who would later mentor me in the field
17: Trained 20 hours a week under the tutelage of Mike and continued to research sport science
18-21: Graduated with a sports science degree in 3 years after completing 2000 hours interning under Mike in North Carolina
22: Traveled to Phoenix to work under arguably the world’s top track and field group
23: Completed my Master’s degree in sport science alongside a two year mentorship with top weightlifting coach, Vance Newgard
24: Worked with an Elite track and field group under Mike prior to starting THP
The reason I share so many stories of successful athletes is in hopes of helping athlete’s like myself achieve success in an area once riddled with misinformation and false promises.
My mission is to inspire others to focus on what they can control and maximize those areas, namely, working as hard as they can to be a stronger, more explosive, better athlete.

Really good video with lots of good information! I hope you can do a video in the future which is based on accessoaries and how do you implement them in your workouts (targeting weak links, volume, intensity, reps, sets, etc.); Thank you and keep up the great work!

Thank you for sharing this concept about the specificity of concentric training to longer ground contact movements! Very interesting.
Also have y’all ever considered lifting in barefoot shoes?

Take away: get really strong concentrically if you want to jump higher

Does this mean having an elastic phase of training to improve 2 foot jumping(for dunking, volleyball etc.) is not worth it? Instead just focusing mainly on general, strength and maybe power training blocks?

What are your thoughts on training more like an Olympic weight lifter vs track athlete for more advanced two foot jumpers?

Hey off topic, but iirc one of your goals was to become a speed jumper like Nick Briz. Any update on your results?

So if I’m hearing this correctly…Zay is literally so elite that he has maxed out his eccentric contraction capacity & the force that can be produced via the tendon? That’s WILD lol I couldn’t imagine being that high level. So in order to get better he essentially has to get his concentric contraction up aka get stronger?

Hi john, how to improve the skills of a novice coach, can you give advice? just read literature / listen to podcasts?

What’s your thoughts on belt squats or the hack squat machine for vertical jump?

So for Isaiah if he solely wants to increase his 2 foot jump, should he decrease his elastic and power work cycles and focus on max strength?

High rep good mornings and romanian deadlifts can probably replace deadlifts because you can just hinge to your natural anatomy.
