Rhoda and Brenda have to take their mother on her very first trip to the doctor, a visit that mama Ida faces with a combination of fear and embarrassment. Air Date: February 3, 1975
I used to watch this show with my parents when I was a little girl. I was 7 when this episode first aired. I'm flabbergasted to realize that I'm now older than Nancy Walker was when she appeared in this. Time melts away like a snowman in summer.
You got that right sister. I didn't realize how much of a fan I was of the show until now. I'm almost 63 so I was 12 in Queens when this episode was released. Because the show takes place in NY in 1974, it's almost like comfort food-- or as I say-- "mommie food"! This show and the characters put me in deep laughter every time. ❤❤❤😂😂😂❤❤❤
What can we say about John Ritter that hasn't been said before, just that we miss him so much, whatever sitcom he is in was brilliant....Rest In Peace John.x
Brilliant episode! The right amount of real life drama, counterpointed with the best comedy writing! How awesome to see John Ritter AND Norman Fell both in this episode! Two comedic geniuses!
you what's funny is that the actress that played the role of rhodas mom , later played the role of Sofias sister on the golden girls.. and the actor who played her father also played a role in the golden girls as roses boyfriend miles..
@@crystalgrose Julie Kavner has a much more interesting voice. Fran Drescher's voice is extremely nasal and is even grating due to that sound. They don't sound the same to me, although I see what you are getting at. I have never been able to stand Fran's voice.
Ida is 52 years old. She looks ten years older. That means she married when she was 15 years old. She said that she was married for 37 years in previous episodes. The writers probably had forgotten the continuity of the characters.
If you do the math it comes out that she was born in 1922 and according to Wikipedia that is her actual date of birth. Valerie Harper was born in 1939 (in real life according to wikipedia) and she would've been 17 if she had her in real life. So that makes sense to me. On the show Valerie says that she was born in 1941. So yeah, the writer's played around with the dates. But I think she Ida looks 70 and really bad too.
It's all in the hair styles!!! The back and sides look great. But front forward....NO! Always the hair AND the way the voice is trained when they were acting up to the 1950's.
@@katherenewedic8076 I can tell you why that was. It was because our parents and grandparents were from Europe and they loved the accordion and polka music and they all wanted their sons to be another Lawrence Welk, who famously played the accordion.
Dave Glo Didn't he also play a character that worked at the bank with Brenda in another episode or am I mistaken? Seems like he played a character that wasn't very nice to Brenda, but I really can't imagine John Ritter playing a bad guy!
10dogs7catsezpz: Yes, Season 2 Episode 17 "Attack on Mr. Right". He played a loan officer who worked at the same bank as Brenda and she wanted to date him.
I liked how Rhoda was on the Mary Tyler Moore Show the best. She was hilarious, and acted like a hippie bohemian type. She is like another person in her own show.
As much as I like and respect the late John Ritter, he just wasn't up to playing the part of an Italian. Having said that, what an awesome episode! So many greats from our Boomer past.
Hey ABALLAM3. You're right about the sitcom connections. Norman Fell and John Ritter who both guest star in this episode is the same two that star in Three's Company together. Talk about a sitcom connection that's really groovy, huh!
Thats not good even for then but times were different then, esp Ida's generation. Preventative care is a relatively new concept. People didn't go to the doctor unless they absolutely had to.
John Ritter as Vince. Did Brenda have a thing for accordian players? Nick Lobo (Richard Masur) as well. John Ritter also played a snobby bank executive at the branch where Brenda works. He asked her out on a date, and proceeded to treat her like crap. The wonderful John Ritter also played the tennis-playing newly-ordained minister, who marries Ted and Georgette in Mary's apartment on the MTM show.
Cool to see John Ritter in this. Obviously someone liked what he did in Rhoda and whatever other shows he did around that time, because two years later, BAM he was cast in Threes Company! :) He WAS pretty funny as Vince! he could lay it on as thick as Jack Tripper! LOl
@@eloiseockert6561 Her clothing began improving from the very first episode of being near her sister Rhoda. When she list weight and pulled her hair back she really blossomed and looked lovely.
Nancy Walker created the iconic Ida Morgenstern. She was Brooklyn Jewish but could have been Italian, Irish, West Indian. She stood for all overbearing, overprotective mothers and everyone who had one was blessed. She preceded Ray Romany’s mother. She set the standard. Shalom and RIP Mrs Ida Morgenstern.
John Ritter!! He sure got around back then, he guest starred on several shows back then. LOL. He was probably playing Reverand Fordwick on The Waltons when doing this ep. Brenda must have loved accordian music...Vince and Nick. Yeesh. During the time when landline phones ruled Earth, you simply kept the receiver off to get no calls, and the caller would hear a busy signal, as what Brenda did. Ida is so funny.
It was great to see John Ritter and Norman Fell. I was thinking if Ida was so scared to see the dr. alone why didn't she ask for a nurse to be in the room. Most women prefer it that way, I do.
This is a strange segment inserting Ritters role playing another accordion player. Nick Lobo soon comes back to seize that spot! Love Ritter, but Lobo seals this role.
Seriously, this show does Brenda so dirty. Every episode, she's dying for a date and male attention, this episode she has it, and they make her a prude! SMH. They should have let that girl get it on, had herself a GOOD time!!
I used to watch this show with my parents when I was a little girl. I was 7 when this episode first aired. I'm flabbergasted to realize that I'm now older than Nancy Walker was when she appeared in this. Time melts away like a snowman in summer.

John Ritter was also in an episode of MTM.
John Ritter was Jack Tripper in this episode. Total similarities 😊
One of the best things about watching these is that my fellow TV addicts share trivia in the comments. I love you ALL!
Nancy Walker was classic comedian!!! Loved the show but Ida was a gem!
WOW!!!!! John Ritter & Norman Fell before Three's Company. Great episode.
I wish the great Nancy Walker had been in every episode. She's magnificent!!!!!
What can we say about John Ritter that hasn't been said before, just that we miss him so much, whatever sitcom he is in was brilliant....Rest In Peace John.x
we should say he was totally overrated !!
I adored him in Sling Blade.
Brilliant episode! The right amount of real life drama, counterpointed with the best comedy writing! How awesome to see John Ritter AND Norman Fell both in this episode! Two comedic geniuses!
I remembered John Ritter from a later episode, but had forgotten he appeared in two different roles.
Honestly, the writers gave the very best lines to Nancy Walker. And she turned them all into real gems!
Dave Glo, Nancy Walker in this role is wonderful casting.
Well the rstings for RHODA always went up when Nancy Walker was on the show...

freda Girl OMG, I didn't realize she played Dorothy's sister! How did I not remember that?!!!
SO THAT'S WHERE I KNOW THEM FROM!
Nancy Walker truely proved what a great actress she was. She loved Broadway.
She played Ida perfectly.
I love this program much. How kind someone was to share.
John Ritter! I love finding all these stars in different episodes ...
18:37: “I’m not afraid of death because my life is not such a bargain.” Great line! 😂
I love Rhoda and the series too.
What a smart and funny show!
Brenda is hilarious! Obviously she wasn't Marge Simpson yet, but man that voice!
She and Fran Drescher (Nanny Fine in “The Nanny”) sounds exactly alike.

On this episode of Rhoda, we have Marge Simpson dating Jack Tripper then subsequently Dr. Stanley Roper. Lots of sitcoms connections in one episode.
