Finally! A Fates Warning episode!
Told you we'd get there. Enjoy!
Fates Warning is probably one of the most underrated bands ever. Love them!
Always wanted to explore this band so the wheel of prog is the perfect start ! Best show of UA-cam. Spin the wheel spin the wheel
Really enjoyed this episode, all the impassioned comments about some of the lower tiered albums will push me to finally got beyond the favorites I've limited myself to in their catalog.
I've always loved Perfect Symmetry, Parallels and Theories of flight but this has made me check out everything and they are even more underrated than I originally thought. Amazing discography
This is my favorite UA-cam show of all times! F×ckin lovit! Just great! Thank you guys!
wow, thanks!
@@progreport thanks to you men! Great guest and awesome bands from the prog world. Keep on!
Still watching, so there may be more to this. I am 55 and Parallels was my introduction to FW and all things ProgMetal. Yes, I had heard QR's Empire, but nothing anywhere close to similar before that. I was recommended Parallels in late-1992/early-1993 and then DT's Images & Words when I went back to the same record store later, looking for more. Had to have MORE! FW have been one of my favorite bands for my entire adult life and I have always had trouble finding anyone else that has heard of them. My top picks would have to be Disconnected, APSoG, and Theories of Flight, with my all-time favorite song being The Light And Shade Of Things. Thank you SO much for finally spreading the word about Fates Warning!
edit: Yes! Thank you, Kg! That is how I feel about Light/Shade. Ten minutes left in the world? That is the one.
edit: Vic, yes! That 2003 tour with QR and DT was unfortunately my only time seeing FW live and it was SO great!
Brilliant, can’t wait to watch
8:56 Parallels
13:55 Inside Out
21:27 Awaken the Guardian
28:15 Night on Brocken
34:50 FWX
39:46 Darkness in a Different Light
44:48 The Spectre Within
49:02 Perfect Symmetry
53:45 Theories of Flight
58:30 Long Day Good Night
1:03:23 No Exit
1:05:29 Disconnected
1:11:48 A Pleasant Shade of Gray
Wow! This is gonna be great! Paralles, Disconnected and Inside Out in S-Tier and FWX, Theories Of Flight and A Pleasant Shade Of Gray in A.
Couldn’t agree more!
S- Awaken the Guardian, Parallels, Perfect Symmetry
A- The Spectre Within, Disconnected, Inside Out
B- A Pleasant Shade of Gray
Now this should be fun. Love these shows keep them coming!
Thanks we try. More on the way.
Epitaph. Greatest ending of any song metal or otherwise, save perhaps Rainbow Stargazer
Completely agree. ❤️
I need to buy that book!!!!
The book is fantastic!
You guys need to do a "Camel" album's tier list
“Emotional connection” with Fates’ music 🤘🤘
great band !! very underrated
Great band. Could argue that FWX should be higher. Love it, love it all.
would really be interested in a beatles wheel!
You guys mostly got it right, though PS is still S tier and their best. But the other three are also S tier. So that's a tough one.
You guys forgot to talk about the Arch Matheos albums though. Fucking bummer.
I remember meeting Jeff at ProgPower one year and him signing my Mean Deviation book. Maybe the year Fates played all of TIGOD? Super nice dude.
Thanks, Yeah we talked before hand about including A/M but decided to focus on just FW.
Awesome!!!!
Parallels is by far the best production because it was recorded in QSpound
I'm good with the rankings overall but I guess I must be the only Fates fan that doesn't think "A Pleasant Shade of Gray" is all that great. I mean, it's good, just like everything else but it doesn't stand out to me. Never has.
That’s the beauty of music-the reaction is purely subjective. Even amongst long time fans, there are drastic differences of opinion. That’s what makes all of this great. Thanks for watching!
@@victorjgiol864 Agreed!!!
Missed Frank Aresti’s playing.
Queensrÿche please!!
MARILLION
APSOG
!!!
I know I’m in the minority here but I have a hard time listening to ATG due to Arch’s singing style.
You’re not the only one. For me, it’s all about Ray and his great vocals.
For othes, it’s the greatest metal album ever made, and a religious experience seeing it live
Rush are a metal band theres no "if" about it...
So u think their not thats your right but its also my right 2 point out when your wrong...
Its an ERRONEOUS bias
TRANSITION MOVEMENT (Proto Prog Metal/Heavy Prog Rock)... Seeds...
Led Zeppelin
King Crimson
Black Sabbath
Deep Purple
Mahavishnu Orchestra
*Should really be the Big 5 Heavy Metal Pioneers
*All are also Progressive/Avant Garde/Fusion...
FOUNDATION WAVE (Prog Metal Pioneers)...
King Crimson
Rush
Iron Maiden
*Other Contributors to early Progressive Metal
Scorpions - (Fly to the Rainbow - Animal Magnetism)
Judas Priest - Sad wings of Destiny/Stained Class
THE BIG 4 (Traditional Progressive Metal bands)...
Queensryche that set the stage for...starts with The Warning (Rage is my favorite as well)
Fates Warning - starts with The Spectre Within
Dream Theater
Mercyful Fate/King Diamond... are also a factor in this equation...
*Other contributors (also belong in this Prog Metal discussion)..
Van Halen/DLR
80' Ozzy
Yngwie Malmsteens Rising Force
Loudness
Watchtower
etc
*Halford/Dickinson/Klaus Meine/Dio/Tate/King Diamond are all unique
Not to mention Plant/Gillan & even Ozzy (to some degree/high just not as extreme) prior to them...
Alder, Niihara, etc
LATER ON (some Key Progressive Metal innovators/Alternative Heavy Prog)...
Megadeth, Voivod, Psychotic Waltz...
Tool, Mr Bungle, Janes Addiction, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, RATM, Kings X, Smashing Pumpkins (thats right i said it),
Atheist, Death, Cynic, Opeth, Katatonia, Porcupine Tree, Sigh, Enslaved, OSI, Kayo Dot, Giant Squid, Gorguts, Arch/Matheos, etc
RECENT... noteworthy Avant Garde/Progressive Metal bands...
Krallice, Ad Nauseam, Defeated Sanity, Pyrrhon, Imperial Triumphant, Ephel Duath, Khorada, Howls of Ebb, Ulcerate, Kvelertak, etc
METAL IS THE ONLY TRUE EVOLUTION OF PROG/Fusion...
*Metal was born DIVERSE (its more than a fraction of elitist... prejudices/from outside & inside the culture)
Where the hell do you keep hearing Mercyful Fate influences here? Mercyful Fate are nothing more than early Maiden with absolutely horrible vocals and stupid stories and a ridiculous image. Musically quite ok, but I found the King's vocals unbearable.
I witnessed the hype around Melissa first hand, as well as the release of Specter, on which I think John Arch is nowhere near as good as on Awaken.
Early Fates Warning sounded a lot like Maiden, but with odd time signatures and more and more prog-heavy. Nothing else.
