- I used to work in a suit and tie, doing that tippety-tappety IT shit. Company car, company phone, expenses, a wife, my own flat, mortgage and credit card debts that kept me awake at night.
Twenty-something years later I live in a fucking van, collecting strange anecdotes. What a strange life this is.
OR, maybe we live in THE MATRIX... sadly, that is just a movie and this is the real world, otherwise I'd be off punching helicopters out of the sky, like some BDSM Superman.
Guess what?! My windows were clear this morning. 🤓

Mevi, help me understand, when you turn the key, the lights turn on, but the engine does not turn over, holding and keeping the key in the same position, all of it sudden after a delay the starter turns the engine, yes /no ??
I'll pin this comment topic as it's generating a lot of interest.
I turn the key, all the electrics come on. Holding the key as if I were trying to turn the engine over, my voltmeter shows a 2V drop indicating that power is going *somewhere*. No clicks, no noises, nothing.
I wait a short while, maybe go do something else for a while and the van will start first time. The amount of time I wait varies.
I've misplaced my spare fob battery. I'll get another today. I'm gonna top up the battery level too.
A couple of commenters have suggested it's the starter solenoid. The starter is maybe 2 years old and the problem has been on and off the last 1.5 years.
Like I said, when I filled the tank, it stopped happening for a while.
I'll check my battery earth again, but I looked at that a few weeks ago. Mechanic checked the earth of the engine and cleaned up the contacts of the alternator and starter. The van was behaving itself when the mechanic looked at it... Typical.
@@Mevi Have you tried pulling out the relay boxes and checking theres no oxidation on the terminals.

Mevi, great little chat about credit cards. The young have never known the days of opening a magazine and half a dozen leaflets falling out offering interest free credit cards and 0% balance transfers. Then using your house/flat as a cash machine by upping your mortgage every two years. I had plenty of friends who lived the champagne lifestyle on lemonade money then paid the price for it. Good luck with the starting fault I can't think what it is but its probably a bad connection somewhere.

Try vaseline sparingly then buff it off . When van wont start. Give the starter motor s tap with a spanner . could need a new solenoid
solenoid On the starter motor sticking if it is that try starting it in gear so it jocks the van, saves hitting starter motor with a hammer on a wet morning
this might sound silly but put a new battery in your key fob.............
soundes more like your startermotor the brushes inside it try tapping it when it plays up cheers

It's the exact same van with a new layout in the back (3rd build with the same vehicle). I'll drive this thing until it's irreparable 😄

Sounds like starter solenoid On the starter motor sticking if it dose it again tap it with a spanner 🔧 and then see if it starts 👍
The solenoid is the unit on the side of the starter motor 👍🙏😍
By the time I've been under the van with a spanner, it might have started anyway. If the starter motor is sticking, it unsticks itself after a few minutes wait.
I like your suggestion of the solenoid.
I'll try the other suggested remedies and book it in if it's still the same.

Congratulations on your fourth year anniversary. Thanks for the tip on the anti-fog. Did know they made it. Have used rain-x for years. Tip: LED light headlights don’t produce much heat. During ice storms the headlights ice up. Using Rain-X will keep them clear. There’s nothing wrong eating two major things food groups. Sugar and Preserves. Have a Happy Year. Keep up with the fantastic videos.
Try a spare key if you have one. Maybe an immobiliser issue...?
I've thought it might be the key. Unfortunately, not an easy test as I only have this one key. It definitely seems electronic, rather than electrical. I just *wait* a few minutes and then it starts.
To try to cure it, last Spring, I replaced the ignition switch along with the steering lock (it's a single part) and that seemed to cure it for a while, so maybe it's a short in the antenna wiring.

Well, that is interesting. I took out the battery to double check the size and needed to pry it out of the holder. Once I reseated it, the van has started first time, every time. I wonder if not being pushed in so tightly, it gets proper contact.

@@Mevi maybe needs a new battery. Just like when batteries go in the TV remote. You take the back off, rotate the battery and it works... or is that just me being tight 😏

Sat here not knowing what to say other than you are always a legend and your (what some would call) brutal honesty is refreshing. Whilst not the same our pathways and marriage experience sound so similar and I’m currently trying to navigate a rough patch on what is coming up to a 6 year relationship - post being married - and if it wasn’t for my kids I’m pretty sure I would be off. Life is tough at times and throws us all curve balls but if magnums and doughnuts are your comfort food your doing ok in my eyes.
Always be true to yourself as you seem to be and whilst we shall never meet I imagine, always remember there are people out there who like and respect you and would happily have you round too diner….. well I would anyway 😀

I think microfibres continue to shrink until they are no longer visible to the naked eye. They're still where you left them, just too small to see.

Those magnum-style icecreams are difficult to stop at just one.. they've perfected the sugar / fat content, so all hope of not eating the whole box is lost. Best cure for a sugary hit day is a kebab or something with protein (at least that works for me). Happy travels for NYears!

Starter motor is sticking, when it happens put it in 2nd & try as best to rock it back & forwards (ignition off) then try again should start, but eventually new starter motor will be needed bud
I tried the rocking thing, no change. If I wait a few minutes, the van starts first time. Might be the starter solenoid, say some. There's a voltage sag when I hold the key on which suggest something to do with the starter.
As much as we try, the debt bubble still has its temptation! We live and learn lol. Safe travels 🙂👍🏽
Mine did that. It was the earth strap near gearbox It’s gets heavily corroded
How was the condensation after the treatment?
Sounds very much like a solenoid issue, I had exactly the same problem on a van i purchased. and it ended up being a loose connection on the solenoid. If its not that then the solenoid on the starter has an issue.
So far, yours is one of 3 comments suggesting the solenoid. I'll get it booked in if the other suggested remedies don't work.
hey not a mechanic but I have had 2 problems like that one was switch in gearshift wouldnt make up to tell it was in park and safe to start another was key wasnt making electrical connection 2 start car both were jiggly electrical connections good luck mevi enjoyed the vid thank you oh yea happy new year
I've replaced the gear selector earlier in the year. No switches in there. The ignition switch was replaced around the same time to try to fix it. Could still be a bad connection there... Voltage sag suggests the problem is elsewhere.
Two things to think of with that vehicle, check the starter battery connections, take them off and use sand paper to clean both posts and wire connectors. Solenoid on starter motor is the usual culprit. Pitty there's no hogvaney this year 😉 , have a good one!
The contacts I can try today. I'll book in with the garage in the new year if we still think it's the solenoid. Dave Whippet suggested the same thing.
Hey Mevi, My van won't start if I haven't got my foot on the brake, do you have any safety features like that on your van? Sometimes on second-hand vans these things are bypassed, it could be that the bypass may be failing. Pete
No safety measures on this van. I tried it anyway. 😂
@@Mevi I just wondered if there were places where these safety features may once have been on your van and see if there's some wires nearby which have been spliced together to bypass the feature. Possibly the splice may be failing. I would check around the brake/clutch pedals (sometimes its on the clutch). I hope you have a happy, healthy and prosperous new year. All the best, Pete

When he remade the starter - battery etc earth leads did he remake the bond between the engine block and the chassis.
10+ years back an engineer I know was pulling his hair out because his "CAR" had the same symptoms took him a while to track that one down.
I'm pretty sure the earth to the engine was good. I'll go poke around with my continuity meter today.
@@Mevi I'm "NO" expert but I recall him saying that his engine mounting points were not metal to metal and the earthing strap between the block and the chassis over time had become high resistance and the only earthing was through all the dozens of bits and bobs which were attached to the block.
I'm only suggesting this as your and his symptoms are identical. I doubt a continuity tester will be any use, probably better when you find it to give the bolts a little tweek.
Here is something I found quote.....
Your starting problems are indicative of a faulty battery, starter motor or the wiring (including earth return) between the two. The random nature suggests that it is more likely to be the wiring and its joints. Ducatos of the X250 and X290 type (2006 onwards) rely on the gearbox/engine to body earth strap to pass all the starter current of many hundreds of amps. The condition of this strap is therefore paramount. Beware that it can look OK but have hidden internal corrosion that raises its electrical resistance.
BTW quick fix/check run a jumper cable from battery negative to engine block.
