The same for me. Studying the Bible for years I bought it all. Then a few years ago all of a sudden it was if the veil was lifted and I realized how mythological it really is. That lead me to studying the history of the Bible and I was totally deconverted. I am free!

@Stirgid Lanathiel I agree with much of what you say. As a child and until my deconversion I was taught every word in the Bible was the literal truth. The definition of faith is, the belief in something for which there is no evidence. I need evidence and have found I have much more peace now than at any time in my life, even while recovering from losing a child.

    • @tonyclif1
      @tonyclif1 2 роки тому +8

@Stirgid Lanathiel the big problem is that believers have decided themselves which bits are literal, and which bits are not.... all based pretty much on what they want to believe, not on any instructions from the bible.

"a recent survey revealed that only about a third of Americans have read the whole Bible" - that's obviously self reported. I'd be very surprised if even 3% of Americans have actually read the whole Bible. Maybe a third of Americans who regularly attend church have read the 4 books of the gospel in their entirety, but even that is probably pushing it.

I agree. I'm an amateur student of religion, and have had many interactions online and in person with believers. In most of these, I know their literature better than they do. When I bring up items from the old testament, they accuse me of cherry picking or taking things out of context. They will hardly ever concede a negative about it, even when it is an unequivocal statement or expression. I also know a great deal more about how and by whom the bibles of today were written... in other words most people converted emotionally and did not and do not study the bibles they have as books. Books are written by people and only by people. Why and how they were written is the exciting part.

I've read the entire Bible, cover to cover. Twice, actually. I went into the task treating it as a novel. It's only moderately interesting when read that way.
The Old Testament is essentially a saga of the Jacob Isaacson and his family, with a whole lot of padding in the form of "prophecies".
The sequel is terrible! The writers seem to have no idea what the original says. They attempt to link its new protagonist to the characters of the Old Testament and fail miserably!

I'm a former lay minister and that 3% number is a bit high. Even those have not studied it in context, most are adept at picking a scripture out of context to support their biases, bigotry and political motivation.
Thus the current church has dropped any pretense of loving their neighbor and are joining ranks with the angry and violent *and they think this is what Jesus wants*

I had a similar experience as a member of the "music worship team" at a mega church in my city. I was one of the main bass players and was normally playing the three Sunday morning services. But I "checked out" of the belief system long before I actually left because I enjoyed playing the music and the people. Towards the end of my time, we were instructed to sit on the front row and "take notes" during the preaching [so it appeared that the music team was fully in to the mission]. And my note taking ended up being a "what's wrong with this belief".
I'm glad I'm no longer in that situation.
Good video. There are many things I wish the religion never taught,.....as the main doctrine became one of the main reasons why I no longer condoned it.

Then there was a guy, Ananias, who sold his house but didn't want to give Peter all the money. So Peter (or "God" I guess), killed Ananias and his wife because they lied about the money and tried to keep some from themselves. Acts 5:5. Real Charles Manson shit.

Not at all. They don't and your sentence was simply too long. I'll explain:
_"The problem with Bible Believers is that they actually believe..."_
You see, many assume that it was just inspired and that's why so much is just the human brain derping on the magnificence of the godly god of awesome perfection. The problem is that neither of those beliefs or any other belief is anything else but interpretations of what people want to read (and cherry pick) in their favorite holy book. Not just the texts are contradicting, the gazillion interpretations are as well and no one can show theirs to be correct or any other to be false. The only ones with _any_ basis are the most fundamentalist of believers, who merely have one assumption: that a god exists. After that, might makes right and everyone else deserves to die, Romans1:20-28, Quran whatever verses talk of killing non believers and gay people.
The ones with ore peaceful interpretations have nothing that can't be refuted and rejected with a different interpretation - they have to somehow rationalize away the death wishes and demands of their god(s).
And that's all without asking any of them to show that a god exists or is even possible, which we should as soon as someone brings up a god. If they can't, we should reject everything they say their god is, wants, represents, etc. It doesn't matter what you or anyone believes if you or they can't show it to be both correct and relevant.

I was raised in the Lutheran church and really didn't question much. When I went to college, there were several classes I was required to take and freshmen had the last choice of electives. One that I had available to me was a New Testament class. That class made me realize how different the stories in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were. I also learned the political context of the time the bible was written. I had always assumed that Matthew, Mark Luke and John were four of the 12 original disciples but only Matthew and John were. I also thought the books of the New Testament were written immediately after the crucifixion but it turns out they were written later, some much later. I was taught in church that the bible was the word of god but it turns out that it is only a few men's version of what happened. Why are there different miracles in each gospel?

@LuthAMF The concern is that the stories were not told by the men that were there at the time. In class, we did an example where one person was given a written story to read and relate to a second person who related it to the next person to the next and on to the 30th person. Each of us wrote what we recalled of the story. We then compared the stories to the original story. Over the course of 30 minutes and 30 retellings, the story changed considerably. Imagine how a story could change over a hundred years. Inconsistent stories bring into question the veracity of the stories. I was told that the scriptures were the Word of God but they are actually the words of men with an agenda to pursue. They have been edited through the years by other men with other agendas.

@LuthAMF I don’t respond to dictatorial demands, but here’s an idea; why don’t you tone down the vitriolic venom and ask politely - maybe even throw in a ‘please’ somewhere, and you might get a response.
In the meantime, I will add that there were numerous gospels circulating among early christians, of radically diverse beliefs, which led to the councils to establish ‘orthodoxy’ , after which it was a case of ‘history was written by the winners’ with their naively anthropomorphic view of god. The ‘winners’ then attempted to eradicate the the more esoteric writings, along with their christian adherents.
The fairly recent discoveries of esoteric gospels such as those of Philip, Thomas and the Gnostics illustrate other dimensions of the meaning of Jesus’s ministry and who knows how many writings are yet to be discovered.

The following quote from Stephen L. Harris, Professor Emeritus of Humanities and Religious Studies at California State University- Sacramento, completes this point with a devastating argument.
*Jesus did not accomplish what Israel’s prophets said the Messiah was commissioned to do:* He did not deliver the covenant people from their Gentile enemies, reassemble those scattered in the Diaspora, restore the Davidic kingdom, or establish universal peace (cf.Isa. 9:6-7; 11:7-12:16, etc.). Instead of freeing Jews from oppressors and thereby fulfilling God’s ancient promises-for land, nationhood, kingship, and blessing- *Jesus died a “shameful” death, defeated by the very political powers the Messiah was prophesied to overcome.* Indeed, the Hebrew prophets did not foresee that Israel’s savior would be executed as a common criminal by Gentiles, *making Jesus’ crucifixion a “stumbling block” to scripturally literate Jews.* (1 Cor.1:23)
      ------------------------------------------------------------------
      The end is near?
*The Bible’s New Testament contains a drumbeat of promises that Jesus is ready to return any day now, implying that it will happen so soon that it would be wise to keep it in mind when making any kind of life decision. But it didn’t happen.* The following is a sample of verses professing this theme:
Matt 10:23: [Jesus said to his disciples] *‘When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next;* ***for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel, before the Son of man comes’.*** (They fled through the towns but the Son of Man never came)
Matt 16:28: [Jesus said to the disciples], *‘Truly, I say to you,* ***there are some standing here*** *who will not taste death* before they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom’.
Mark 9:1: And he [Jesus] said to them [the disciples], *‘Truly, I say to you,* ***there are some standing here*** *who will not taste death* before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power’.
Mark 13:30: *[After detailing events up to end of world, Jesus says]* ‘Truly, I say to you, ***this generation will not pass away*** *before all these things take place’.*
Mark 14:62: And Jesus said ***[to the high priest - died 1st cent. AD]*** ‘You will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven’. (The high priest died and never saw the Son of Man)
Rom 13:12: The day is *at hand.*
1 Cor 7:29: The appointed time has grown very short; from now on, *let those who have wives live as though they had none.* (Funny thing to say if you didn’t think the end was imminent)

"When we say…Jesus Christ…was produced without sexual union, and was crucified and died, and rose again, and ascended to heaven, ***we propound nothing new or different*** *from what you believe regarding those whom you call Sons of God. [In fact]…if anybody objects that [Jesus] was crucified, this is in* ***common*** *with the sons of Zeus (as you call them) who suffered, as previously listed [he listed Dionysus, Hercules, and Asclepius].* Since their fatal sufferings are all narrated as not similar but different, so his unique passion should not seem to be any worse."
*Note how Justin (Martyr) is less of a fool than modern Christian apologists. He admits that differences don’t matter.* Since each and every one of the suffering and dying gods are slain by different means, one cannot argue the mytheme requires exactly the same means of death. “But Osiris can’t have inspired the Jesus myth because Osiris wasn’t nailed to a cross” is a stupid argument. The mytheme is simply death. Being killed. Suffering and dying. The exact mode of death can vary freely. It makes no difference to the existence and influence of the mytheme. It’s simply the particular instantiation of a generic abstraction. *And Justin’s argument (that Satan invented these fake religions to confuse people) entails Justin agreed the mytheme existed: indeed, it was demonically promulgated, multiple times. Intentionally.*
*Likewise, Justin notices the mytheme is not virgin birth, but sexless conception. Of which many examples had already been popularized in pagan mythology (there just happens to also have been examples of actual virgin born gods as well). And by his argument (that the Devil was deliberately emulating the Jesus mytheme, in advance), Justin clearly accepted the same principle for “rising again” after death:* the particular exact metaphysics of the resurrection could, like the exact method of death or conception, vary freely. The mytheme consists solely of the abstraction: returning to life. Somehow. Some way. We will say bodily, at the very least. But what sort of body (the same one, a new one, a mortal one, an immortal one), didn’t matter. *If it had, Justin would have made the argument that “those gods” weren’t really resurrected. But that argument, never occurs to him. Nor did it to any other apologist of the first three centuries.*
*Ancient Christians well knew there was nothing new about their dying-and-rising god. Not in respect to the mytheme.* Their claims were solely that his particular instantiation of it was better, and the only one that actually happened. *They didn’t make up the stupid modern arguments that dying-and-rising god myths didn’t exist or weren’t part of a common mytheme everyone knew about. For example, in the same century, Tertullian, in Prescription against Heretics 40, makes exactly the same argument as Justin. Funny that. They had better access to the evidence than we do. They knew what was really and widely the case. We should listen to them.*

The only evidence for any god being an exception are thinking errors and fallacies, so there's not even a reason to seriously consider any god until there's reasonable evidence that one is possible to begin with. "Oh, you're so close minded!" Revelation chapter 22 sums up his promises where he tells thru this angel to John of patmos that " I am coming SOON ( quickly ) " and repeats it three times in the chapter ! He also states in verse 10 that " the time is near when all this will happen " ! Referring again to the end of the AGE and his fathers celestial kingdom coming to earth !
Since None of this has happened as promised the question remains as to why anyone continues to put any weight or credibility to this profoundly overdue second coming ! ?

    • @LM-jz9vh
      @LM-jz9vh 2 роки тому +1

The second coming was supposed to be about the Son of Man coming within the lifetime of the disciples. Didn't happen.
1 Cor 7:31: For the form of this world is *passing away.*
Phil 4:5: The Lord is *coming soon.*
1 Thess 4:15: *We who are alive, who are left* until the coming of the Lord.
Hebrews 1:2: *In these last days* he has spoken to us by a Son.
Hebrews 10:37: For yet a little while, and the coming one shall come and *shall not tarry.*
James 5:8: The coming of the Lord is *at hand.*
1 Peter 1:20: He [Christ] was destined before the foundation of the world but was made manifest at the *end of the times.*
1 Peter 4:7: The end of all things is *at hand.*
1 John 2:18: *It is the last hour;* and as you have heard that antichrist is coming.

I could make a list of all the contrived,cop-out verses fundagelicals use to avoid contradictions and inconsistencies in the Bible, especially the new testament, and to fit there pre-concluded narrative. After being an evangelical for 35 years or so,I've heard it all. 1)Jesus said THIS generation would not pass away before his return? What he really meant was THAT generation-the one who would see all the signs-would not pass away. 2)Why hasn't Jesus come back yet? Well, don't you know that a day is as a thousand years to the Lord? The "some standing here" statement Jesus made? He was speaking of the Transfiguration 6 days later.3) Paul saying that "we"(including himself)will be caught up soon? Don't you know that Paul was using the "editorial "we"-to identify with his audience? What is the missing ingredient that believers for the last 2,000 years have missed regarding the timing of the Lord's arrival? Why it's the event of Israel becoming a nation again in 1948.That's how you know you are living in the "last hour." I could go on and on with their artificial and contrived "answers." But I better stop now.I feel like I'm gonna puke.

Imagine how uncomfortable it will to be in God's direct presence for eternity if you are not in Christ.

I just want to point out that the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were NOT written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. I could be mistaken, but I felt that the video was, at best, unclear about this, and at worst, implied (or could be perceived to imply) in some areas that they were.
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were written DECADES after Jesus supposedly lived, by UNKNOWN authors, and were also NOT eyewitness accounts. The individual authorships of each of these books were attributed to them by the church as a matter of tradition, not fact, and many bibles state this in a sort of preface at the beginning of each gospel.
In fact, there are NO known eyewitness accounts of Jesus by ANYONE. Not that an eyewitness account would make the story true (it is, after all, one of the least reliable forms of testimony), but the fact that there exists NONE of even the LEAST reliable evidence paints a rather dubious picture. The final passage of Seth's reading of chapter 10 (regarding the gospels not being a biography of Jesus), could be an allusion to this, but I thought I would make it clear for everyone, just in case. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Congrats on yet another interesting segment, Seth.

The whole foundation of blood sacrifice, to me, is still one of the most confounding elements of how this ideology has stayed so popular.

    • @lawrence1318
      @lawrence1318 Рік тому

The 'blood' is simply a synecdoche for "death [to self]". So it's not the blood per se, but what the blood represents.
The death of Christ was not a martyr's death, but God proving that He would never hold the law (the 10 commandments etc) over anyone who trusts in Him.
You see, Christ was sent to the Jews because they were the custodians of the law of Moses/God, which law He (Christ) actually gave to Moses.
So when Christ declared in faith that He was the Son of God and thus equal with God and thus God (for no-one but God is equal with God), He broke the first commandment, and He did so knowing the Jews who were the custodians of the law, would kill Him for making such a claim.
Thus He showed what the apostle Paul later taught, viz, the law is not of faith (see Gal 3:12).
So the lesson in this is that we are not to try to please God by our own works of righteousness (which is in essence to attempt to keep the 10 commandments) but are to lay that all aside and simply behold Him who proved that those who trust in Him are not under the law anymore and are thus free from condemnation.
Thus it is written: "There is no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus" (Rom 8:1).

Medieval Christians were baffled by Jesus' statement that someone alive at the time would witness the second coming. The only solution they could think of was that there must be someone still alive from the time of Jesus --- someone who was effectively immortal. Thus arose the legend of the "Wandering Jew" --- a man, who would naturally have to be a Jew, who had been present when Jesus said it and was condemned by a curse to wander the Earth until the End Times. He was said to be a shoemaker. There are hints of this legend as early as the seventh century, but the earliest clear mention is in an Italian chronicle in AD 1225, after which the idea became extremely popular. People claiming to either being or having met the Wandering Jew popped up regularly throughout the Christian world, including one in Harts Corners, New Jersey in 1868. The character is the subject of many fictional treatments, the best known of which is the huge and now unreadable novel "Le Juif errant" written by the popular French novelist Eugène Sue.

I suspect that many Christians themselves sense that suffering-especially when it arrives calamitously in their own lives-damages their faith in God’s goodness. But the resurrection stories probably are naively accepted because the faithful have been conditioned to tolerate the high levels of fantasy and magical thinking in the gospels. They may stumble a bit if they read Matthew’s story about a lot of dead people walking out of their tombs on Easter morning, but the acclamation, “He is risen!” is usually not diminished. The apostle Paul seems to have locked in this belief: “…if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
But devout Christians are not usually prepared to face another reality: that the teachings of Jesus himself diminish the value of the gospels. In fact, he taught a lot of things that most Christians don’t believe at all, and blatantly ignore. On so many issues they don’t want to know what Jesus would do. Why is it that so many of the devout just don’t notice that their holy hero, supposedly their Lord and Savior, doesn’t measure up as a great moral teacher?
It’s not such a mystery after all. Here are a couple of hard facts about Christian piety:
Fact Number 1: For centuries the church has promoted an idealized Jesus. We can see Jesus depicted in great art and stained glass windows. In Handel’s Messiah we find the words of Isaiah 9:6 applied to Jesus, For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given… And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. When priests and preachers speak about Jesus from the pulpit, the folks in the pews usually hear positive, feel-good verses from the gospels.
Fact Number 2: most Christians don’t read the Bible very much. One research article published in 2017 was titled, Americans Are Fond of the Bible, Don’t Actually Read It. Check out the chart at the link. We rarely-if ever-hear Christians say, “Tonight I’m going home to read the gospel of Mark straight through.” There are too many other options: TV, movies, sports.
So, the many negatives about Jesus go unnoticed, undiscovered. In my new book, Ten Things Christians Wish Jesus Hadn’t Taught: And Other Reasons for Questioning His Words, the bad, mediocre, alarming things Jesus taught are sorted into ten chapters. While I was working on the book, I reread the gospels carefully for the umpteenth time in my 78 years and created an Excel spreadsheet, a chart of disappointing Jesus quotes. The total came to 292. I sorted them into four categories: (1) preaching about the end time; (2) scary extremism; (3) bad advice and bad theology; (2) the unreal Jesus in John’s gospel. This chart is included on the book’s website, www.BadThingsJesusTaught.com.
But in the book, you will find these inferior Jesus quotes arranged under ten headings. Here’s the Table of Contents:
    Foreword by David Fitzgerald
Part 1 - Ten Troublesome Teachings
Be Careful Not to Love Too Much
Don’t Worry about Basic Human Needs
Never Say No to a Borrower
    Give Me Everything
    Remarrying After Divorce Is Adultery
You Are Accountable for Every Word
    You Can Do Magic
I Don’t Want Everyone to Understand Me
Do What I Say or I Will Hurt You
I Will Return During Your Lifetime
My appeal to Christians in this book is simple: resist the impulse to rationalize these sayings that don’t sound right-to say the least-and give serious thought to their implications. Or, as I put it in the book:
“I’m calling out a silent rebellion by followers of Jesus-including many of his most devout disciples-against some of his key teachings. One characteristic of these teachings is that if they were uttered by anyone other than Jesus, these same believers would reject them immediately and openly, instead of pretending they must mean something else or are too mysterious to grasp.”
Where will serious inquiry into Jesus script lead you, and what are the implications for the faith? One of the common reactions among the faithful is denial: “Jesus couldn’t have said that!” This is based, of course, on the idealized Jesus they’ve been primed to believe in and taught to love. The irony is that many New Testament scholar say pretty much the same thing, but for different reasons. They have discovered that there is no way at all to verify any of the words attributed to Jesus in the gospels. In Part 2 of the book I discuss the problems scholars have identified that block our view of the “real words of Jesus”-if there were any. In the final chapter I ask readers to ponder how Mark and John differ in their presentations of Jesus; the latter specialized in theology inflation.
Part 2 - Other Reasons to Question
Four Obstacles to Knowing What Jesus Said
    Two Versions of Jesus
John Loftus has said this about the impact of my arguments:
“In this book Dr. Madison lands a dozen punches against common assumptions about Jesus. We find ten categories of Jesus teachings that most Christians simply ignore or reject, then a summary of research by scholars-including devout Christian scholars-showing that the words of Jesus cannot be verified: 'There is virtually no chance that authentic words of Jesus are preserved in the gospels.' But then the faithful find this embarrassment: 'There are many Jesus sayings that Christians wouldn’t take seriously at all if they didn’t know Jesus said them.' Madison shows that far too many of the sayings of Jesus don’t make sense. They’re incoherent, containing impractical commands, and based on shallow and/or magical thinking, which are typical of cultic authoritarian leaders who demand blind obedience. This is an enlightening book by a biblical scholar who’s also a master communicator. I’m a big fan of his. Get! It! You! Must!”
John C. Wathey, author of The Illusion of God’s Presence: The Biological Origins of Spiritual Longing, wrote a review on Amazon, which includes these paragraphs:
“This lucid, insightful, and concise book takes a unique approach to the problem of Christian faith. Biblical scholar David Madison approaches the reader in a spirit of empathy and generosity but also uncompromising honesty. More specifically, he approaches Christian readers on their own turf. In the first ten chapters he assumes, for the sake of argument, that the words attributed to Jesus in the gospels are accurate representations of his teachings. If we accept this premise, is Jesus truly the greatest teacher of all time? Do his words really match the image of the loving Savior we were told about as children in Vacation Bible School? The answers will shock a great many Christians who have never read the New Testament completely, carefully, and honestly.
“Of course, many Christians are so deeply committed to their faith that nothing will shake the scales from their eyes, and Madison obviously understands this. But he also knows, from his own experience, that there are intellectually honest Christians who struggle with doubt and that a deep, open-minded study of Scripture only makes the problem worse. This book is ideal for people who are on that difficult path. It takes courage to seek truth, wherever that journey leads, but this book will help.”
Sometimes I’m told, “The people you really want to reach won’t read the book.” But I want to reach a wide variety of people. Yes, fellow disbelievers who are looking for resources as they interact with believers. It’s also important to grasp that Christians exist on a scale. There are those who qualify as 10’s. Nothing we can say-no rational arguments at all-can change their minds. Hope of heaven hangs in the balance. However, there are Christians who fall elsewhere on the scale. Maybe the childhood indoctrination didn’t work so well, and doubts come into play often enough. As nonbelievers we can encourage them to actually read the Bible-of all things. They shouldn’t settle for the feel-good texts read from the pulpit. There are 292 Jesus quotes that should bother people…and bring on that most corrosive habit: critical thinking.
“Three strikes and you’re out!” This applies to Christianity as well as to baseball.
Christianity Strike 1: The concept of a loving, attentive, competent God is falsified by the colossal levels of human and animal we see around us every day. Clichés about his mysterious ways and free will don’t work.
Christianity Strike 2: The most fundamental doctrine of the faith, the resurrection of Jesus, cannot be sustained in the wake of critical analysis of the gospel stories of Easter morning. They are a blend of fantasy, folklore, and magical thinking.
Christianity Strike 3: Jesus doesn’t measure up as a great moral teacher-in fact, far from it. He is one of the faith’s biggest problems.

Jesus was clearly a delusional preacher who believed he was the son of the Jewish god Yahweh and prophesied the end of the world was imminent,
    which it was for him.
He also told a rich young man to sell or give away all his possessions, give his money to the poor, take up his cross and follow Jesus if he wanted to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
I don't think that was good advice. The young man could have donated to charity and volunteered without becoming a homeless and destitute follower of Jesus - who later disappeared into his magic kingdom in the sky.

All you really know about Jesus is what others reported He said unless you were there, were you? We all need Our Father to show us the Way back home to Heaven. Now it is the time when you usually would say prove it, when you already know that I cannot. So instead of you asking me for something that you know that I cannot give you, which would only be foolish, why not ask me this? How can I find proof myself?.............Falun Dafa

And because the writers of the letters preached human blood sacrifice on a cross ( _stauros_ - pole, stake, or pale) Jesus had to be thrown into the meat grinder of crucifixion. Or is it meat Grindr? Because scholars who studied the subject tacitly let it be known that the Roman execution cross was male, based on ancient epigraphy and the writings of non-Christian writers and the ante-Nicene church fathers.

silly as it might sound at first glance, i often wonder how popular christianity would be if christ had proclaimed the only way to heaven is through crucifixion, would that put people off? i notice we don't do blood sacrifices anymore. they'd make excuses still i'm sure.

Isn't the concept of the soul/spirit rising to heaven immediately after death a concept largely created by Paul late in life after realizing that Jesus was no longer likely to return during his lifetime (and there's no way someone as devoted as he would be forced to die, waiting for the retun and not be rewarded immediately for his bodily efforts)?
The prevailing idea through most of Paul's life was that when you died, you were just dead. Until Jesus returned to create his kingdom on earth and you were resurrected.
