I have to add my two cents --- perhaps Mr. Thomas has written some good books but I have many complaints about "The Golden Empire," which I find un-readable. Flabby sentence on top of flabby sentence...as if the writer is sitting far back in his chair and dictating; rather than sitting forward and doing the hard work of composing.
