Michael was a friend. I produced a few of his concerts. He would stay at my house. I got to watch him practice. He was the sweetest guy. I had heard about him from George Winston who called him "a combination of Segovia and Pete Townsend." Yet Michael was more than that. He studied electronic music and like Pat Metheny was a devotee of Stephen Reich. You can hear this on the track Spare Change. It was a piece suited for synths, but somehow Michael played it on acoustic guitar. Before he died, Michael was taking secret lesson from Metheny.
Honestly, this was not the track to show off his talents. If you remotely liked this piece, you should check out Silent Anticipations and Aerial Boundaries. React to the video as people need to see his unusual techniques.
I forget how many shows we did... but only one didn't make money. For that night, Michael refused to take his contractually agreed payment. He didn't want me to lose money out of my pocket. He was that kind of guy.

      Thanks for sharing that :).
No wonder why he played that unusual "Harp/Guitar", I would guess being inspired by Methany. I always had the sense he was a VERY kind person.
      - Rest in Peace Michael.

Michael Hedges, who died in a car accident at 43 (1997) was a huge influence on a number of acoustic guitarists to this day such as Mike Dawes with his use of harmonics, hammering, percussion, and tapping. Check out the title song of his 1984 album "Aerial Boundaries". He would use hammer-ons that would make you think 2 people were playing. Another innovative acoustic player who has been around for quite a while is Adrian Legg, who by using special locking banjo tuning pegs on his guitars, constantly changes his tuning as he plays. Kaki King sites Preston Reed as a guitar influence, and Reed started experimenting after hearing the first couple of Michael Hedges albums.

We are fortunate that there exists a series of albums called "Windham Hill Samplers" where you will find high quality New Age music by Hedges, Will Ackerman, George Winston, Shadowfax, Alex DiGrassi, Wim Mertens, Mark Isham, Ray Lynch, Vangelis, Carol Tatum, David Arkenstone, Philip Aaberg, Liz Story, John Gorka, Scott Cossu, maybe Kitaro, and others. In the '80s when radio was shite, I would have these Samplers on heavy repeat. Great to see Mr. Hedges in action. May he RIP.

MICHAEL! The late, great Michael Hedges is truly one of the most unique, innovative players in the history of the guitar. He has about 8 albums - note he never wrote a single song in standard tuning and never used the same tuning twice! I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times for brief chats as he would wait around after shows to spend time with anyone who would approach him. He was truly one of the nicest people you could ever meet and very humble. The world lost a GIANT of the music world with his tragic passing.

I saw Michael Hedges in the late 90's at the Cubby Bear in Chicago shortly before he passed away. The man could play the guitar like no one I've ever seen or heard. His most famous song was "Aerial Boundaries". It was also used in some commercials. His tune "Because It's There" is beautiful piece he plays on his Harp Guitar.

So happy to see your reaction to Michael Hedges (RIP) - an absolutely groundbreaking pioneering virtuoso. If you liked this, you will probably also enjoy Leo Kottke, Tommy Emmanuel, and Mike Dawes, among others. They're among the greatest living acoustic guitarists, and I'm not even slightly exaggerating. I've seen each of them live, and every time I'm faced with a decision - smash my own guitars or spend more time practicing! (No guitars have yet been smashed).

I caught him live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa back in 1986. I had never heard of him - he was opening for Will Ackerman and the band Shadowfax. They introduced him and out walked this skinny white guy with his hair in cornrows and promptly opened up with a cover of 'All Along the Watchtower' in which he absolutely attacked his acoustic guitar! I was stunned! He was absolutely one of the most uniquely talented musicians I ever saw, tragically lost in a car accident in the 90s.

It would be worthwhile for you guys to check out the live video of "Aerial Boundaries" recorded in 1986. The first time I heard "Aerial Boundaries" was the studio version, and I sincerely thought it was an acoustic guitar trio. When I asked "Who's that?" and the guy answered "Michael Hedges", I was in disbelief. "One guy?" "Yup". I bought the cassette the next day. Yes, cassette. State of the art audio in '86. Anyway, check it out if you get a chance.

I just happened to be in a restaurant in Palo Alto, CA when they had Michael Hedges playing. He was, of course, amazing. You got the feeling that he had an organic connection to his guitar--that they had a shared understanding of where they were going and what to do physically and musically to get there. I rarely get that feeling--the latest was when I heard Brinsley Schwarz when he was playing with Graham Parker.

I was *such* a Michael Hedges fan back in the '90s, saw him play live in my city. I was so heartbroken when he died. He was heavily influenced by Joni Mitchell's style from the Hijira period. "Live on the Double Planet" is probably the best introduction to his work; "Taproot" is another favorite.

I love the Roster of Windham Hill records Michael's label. Alex De Grassi and William Ackerman. Are excellent as well. For an another mind blowing acoustic ( and electric) player check out Phil Keaggy. Phil Keaggy was known as a pioneer of the Jesus Music movement of the 70s, but he is one of the finest finger-picking guitarists on earth and his instrumental albums are utterly amazing! There is an excellent video of him recording his song 'Cajon Pass' which is acoustic but uses some cool recording techniques.

Check out Stanley Jordan #nicknlexrequest sometime. He does this in a Jazz style with an electric guitar. I saw him in concert too! Just as amazing if not more so. I have no idea how any musician can do this and keep things straight in their head.

Especially the song Because it's There where he plays the harp guitar, amazing. Michael tells a story about playing at a venue the same night that the group GTR what's playing. He found himself in an elevator with Steve Howe of Yes. How noticed the case containing the Harp guitar and asked Michael what's in the case? Michael pulled out the Harp guitar and played a little bit in the elevator. Afterwards the guys with Steve Howe said that Steve was blown away and said who was that guy!!!!

#nicknlexrequest Michael Hedges was a one man orchestra on the guitar and the forerunner of many of todays more experimental guitarists. His track Hot Type is a mind boggling journey in under two minutes (I'd suggest playing that alongside the track Aerial Boundaries or Bensusan). He was tragically killed on a car crash at only 43 years of age. I would also recommend Playing With Pink Noise by Kaki King. It's a percussive guitar masterclass.

Guys, there's a whole generation and GENRE of musicians, especially acoustic guitar musicians that would NOT exist in their present form without Michael Hedges. As I saw in another YT video featuring his Red Rocks Aerial Boundaries performance, MH said of himself that he's just a composer that just so happens to play the guitar (and the flute, and the piano...). To me, its kindav obvious that he was WAYYYYY ahead of his time. It actually took almost TWO generations of guitarists to actually catch up to his musicality, composition style, range of instruments, unique use of intonation, percussive techniques....I could on and on about the TECHNICAL aspects of MH's work. But what he brought to the stage, to his audience, more than anything else that was on a whole new level (IMO), was his CONNECTION to his audience. I KNOW of veteran MASTER guitarists that viewed and listened to MH for the first time and they were BLOWN AWAY by just his technique alone. Andy Mckee recently (last 6 or 7 years) made himself dedicate the better part of a YEAR learning Aerial Boundaries. And he says of himself that he's ALMOST got it down. He said of AB that it is one of the toughest songs to learn, and even HARDER to get it RIGHT. And, I myself have watched several different performances of MH doing Aerial Boundaries and it's different every time. All were awesome, all different in one way or another. THAT'S Michael Hedges. RIP Michael, the world needs people like you, now more than ever....
Here's a few requests: Snarky Puppy - Lingus (We Like It Here), featuring Larnell Lewis (drummer), second is Calum Graham - The Nomad (a dedication to Michael Hedges)

I was blown away by Michael Hedges when I first heard him, but his music was not something I kept going back to year after year, like for example, other guitar virtuosos such as Leo Kottke or Joe Pass.

I saw Hedges open for Kottke twice. One set each and another of them playing together. Mind blowing shows.

    Guitar virtuoso
Don Ross wrote & performs a tribute tune the late greatest Michael Hedges. Ragamuffin, Ariel Boundries many other Michael 's works are all special . C S&N had just finished a show and heard a guy playing guitar in a parking lot. He was sitting on his car. They liked his playing & asked Michael if he'd like to play during their next show and that helped a lot to promote his work

Love Michael Hedges! (RIP😥). Got to see him on a double bill with one of his big influences- Leo Kottke- and it was a magical night! His Aerial Boundaries album is fantastic! For more great acoustic guitar playing, check out Preston Reed. "Straight to the Top", from The Road Less Travelled album, actually got airplay on rock stations in the '80s! A beautiful little song from his Pointing Up album is "Gittel and Jerry's Song." Also wonderful is the Algerian guitarist Pierre Bensusan. Michael wrote a beautiful song in tribute to him, which is on Aerial Boundaries. And, of course, you must listen to Leo Kottke's "Vaseline Machine Gun" from his 1969 debut album 6 and 12 String Guitar. He is fun to see live, as he is an amusing storyteller.🎵❤️🎵
