When I was a kid, i noticed in the closing credits if you look closly the Skipper is trying to set a fire, loading the wood and Gilligan is trying to help and the Skipper slaps his hand, has anyone else noticed this bit? Rick you're content is awesome! 🎉
That's a shame, their song was I think the best part of that episode! On one hand I love that MeTV even exists, on the other hand, well, DAMN..... I guess it is what it is!
I remember watching this episode when it came out in the 60's. It bothered me that the Professor didn't notice the shoreline of the lagoon 'not' flooding, but placed all of his focus on that one goofy bamboo stick in the water. Oh well, to much skeptical thinking when I was 8
Same. Why was the tide line still the same? I guess we now know that, without the sinking stick, there's have been no Gilligan goof. And therefore, no episode.. Still love Mr. Howell buffing the grass blades. Over the decades, when sweating it out on my own lawn in summer, I sometimes wish I can have a lawn and helpmate like Mr. Howell had! With a sip of Mint Julip after every blade cut.
I remember this scene. That's pretty bad that shows need to cut out scenes just to make room for more commercials. They need to cut down on commercials and leave all scenes in the shows. Gilligans Island is one of my favorites also.
It’s always unfortunate how certain scenes get removed in order to have more commercials. It’s not new obviously, but it’s always unfortunate that this continues to happen. Keep up the great work Rick, I hope you’re doing well. Have a great day and take care!
Reminds me of a scene from the probably not so well known movie FM, where the new guy in charge wants to add more commercials and the head DJ just says to him, heck we could just get rid of ALL the music and play nothing but commercials to which the guy just smiled and said something like great idea!!!! And of course Demolition Man where they play nothing but commercials and even do requests for the "oldies"! GEEZ........
I remember this scene. I think it included Lovee drying his forehead. She identified perspiration when he asked what it was (maybe this was in another episode?)
I remember that scene when I watched the reruns because I borrowed my mom’s manicure set to trim the sidewalk after seeing it. My mom was mad and asked where I would get such a crazy idea and I said I saw on TV.
I like season one where the professor is a judge on who owns the treasure chest. The gavel was squirting coconut milk on Thurston and before scene fades away you can see professor about to lose it laughing. Russell Johnson was underrated.
Generally, sitcoms put a closing scene after the last commercial break that can be removed for additional commercials during syndication. It’s removed without affecting the plot.
Yes, it is called an epilogue and it is almost a staple in TV shows. However, the plot does always seem to end before it. It is like a tidy little ribbon they attach to the end of each episode.
Yes, I remember this scene from the original air date. Also remember it in the early reruns before they started to have more commercials. It is truly a hilarious scene. Thank you Rick for sharing this one.
I grew out of Gilligan's Island and Three's Company. I liked them more as a little kid. I do vaguely remember something about The Proffessor putting a pole in water though.
I most definitely notice when a scene has been cut out, and it bugs me so much! One of the reasons I really like Pluto Tv is that they do show the uncut versions of the episodes. 📺
In the black and white pilot, there is a scene where Mary Ann and Gilligan go to look for water, and Mary Ann makes a pass at Gilligan. That scene seems to be missing in rebroadcasts as well.
Sherwood Schwartz and writers were playing with the idea of having Gilligan and Mary Ann become a couple, and put in that scene as a way of setting it up. Later they decided to scrap the idea.
I have always wondered the same thing about I Love Lucy. I heard that occasionally Desi Arnez would ask the network to allow an extra long episode. I have no way of knowing what scenes I am missing when I watch I Love Lucy reruns.
Yes-some examples of scenes that were cut in the past were in the musical episodes of “I Love Lucy” such as in “The Operetta” where Fred (William Frawley) has his song about having his “Inn on the river Out”, and also in the dream episode “Lucy Goes to Scotland” which sometimes would cut the bit where the professional sword dancers are demonstrating their tradition followed by the physical comedy of Lucy attempting to prove she could also do it. When I was a teenager interested in film I actually applied for work at WPIX in NYC and was shown by a few editors how different lines or entire scenes would be trimmed or cut completely from several sitcoms airing at the time including “Gilligan’s Island”, “I Dream of Jeannie” and “Get Smart” among others. Also, generally the first season episodes were rarely if ever shown due to the fact that they were filmed in black and white and not colorized at that time for tv. The editors at the tv station all agreed on one fact: you could pass an episode around to several editors and they would each have their own individual ideas about what lines or entire scenes should be cut!
I have the DVDs so I'm familiar with that scene. I can't watch any old series in syndication due to the time compression, which makes the voices of the actors too high pitched.
This grass cutting scene surprisingly is one of the scenes that I often remember from the show as it was so silly to me when I watched it the first time.
The first classic TV DVD set I ever bought was MASH and I noticed right away that there were scenes that I had never seen before. As I watched through the entire set, I noticed lots of scenes that were shortened or otherwise edited and some that were completely cut out of the TV versions I had seen growing up. Then I bought Hogan's Heroes and it was the same thing! Lots of scenes that I had never watched before but it was a good thing, almost like lots of little Christmas presents lol.
Gilligan's Island was one of the BEST shows ever made! Yes, it was a "live action cartoon," it was silly and goofy. And PRICELESSLY hilarious! But, Rick: I thought you'd *show* us the scene! May be copyright reasons, but my expectation was disappointed. 😞
A scene cannot be shown as copyright would be violated and this would hurt my channel. That’s why there are the DVDs and Pluto TV which is free and you can watch that scene right now if you’d like there. This is a commentary channel, remember
@@ricknineg OK, THAT makes sense! Almost seems a silly affair considering the principle of fair use - but YOU know better than me! Thanks for the tidbit.
Gilligan's Island is huge globally except in the UK where only a small number of episodes were shown in 1966 in some local ITV regions on random weeks on a Thursday, then it was never shown again. Very few Brits have heard of it. However, I bought the series on Prime so at least one Brit is Mary Ann 😊.
Love that you pointed out this scene omission in order to fit in more awful commercials! I remember this scene from watching GI as a kid in the 70’s and they didn’t delete it then. I find network showings of GI harder to watch now because some of the funniest scenes that I love are deleted for re-formatting. Often I find scenes of the Howell’s are deleted and they’re some of the best and funniest scenes. The show is a delightful classic and the acting was excellent and very funny. Networks, stop cutting scenes!! No one wants to see another deodorant ad!
Perhaps off topic, but I often use the word "Ennui" in Scrabble. I can't write it without hearing the Jim Backus/Thurston Howell voice in my mind. If you pronounce it correctly you're practically doing a Mr. Howell impression.
Yes, I definitely remember this scene, I had no idea it was ever cut, but then it's been a long time since I've watched GI. Poor Mr. Howell was so exhausted after manicuring that blade of grass, it was hilarious! They played their parts perfectly!
I saw the scene in question in syndication. This would have been in the 70s; maybe they started deleting the scene later. I probably only remember the scene because of the absurdity. Incidentally, the premise of this episode is a good example of how Gilligan's Island encouraged the less than 10 year old me to think critically about science. I remember the first thing i thought was the Professor is full of BS, because were the island really sinking, the first thing everyone would notice is the beach shrinking due to the water covering it. But NO, the professor fixates on some stick he put in the water, and ignores all the other evidence.
This scene is on the DVD set. I prefer to watch it that way because of all the cut scenes from many of the episodes. Sundance recently started running the series and they have trimmed the episodes down to about 16-17 min. They cut a lot of the good stuff, so sad. Thank you for covering this for those who haven't seen it.
My favorite episode was Who killed Rudolph Blake, the castaways recreate the murder of Blake, which they all have a motive, except the Skipper and Gilligan, great episode.
reality check: if the castaways really wanted to get off the island, they had to kill Gilligan first... he pretty much screwed up every attempt for them to get off.....
I do remember this scene. So typical of Mr. Howell... Rip Jim Backus. AKA Mr. Magoo... the genie from that classic Bugs Bunny cartoon(I'm here, I'm here.. let the bells all ring and the banners fly) and others.
Born in 70 and growing up a TV addict, I definitely remember that scene, really terrible that they have to cut scenes like that. That explains to me now though why I've noticed a time or two here and there were scenes were missing from reruns of different shows. I thought it was just somebody's mistake, or a glitch, now I know better.
I remember the scene quite well. Unfortunately, due to greed, the networks have reduced 25 or 26 minute episodes to about 18 to 20 minute episodes so that they can make more money, but that's for all shows not just GI.
Yup. In my day, the episodes of most older shows were edited and chopped up. And if they weren't, sometimes they looked really bad. Scratches in the prints, soundtracks where the music was "wavy," etc. I'm very glad that much of that got fixed by the 1990s.
I do remember seeing that scene years ago. I use to watch Gilligan's Island reruns all the time when I was a kid, so I have probably seen every episode 3 or 4 times although I have not watched an episode in a long time. But I enjoy watching UA-cams about the series.
Gilligan's Island was my favorite tv show when I was a kid, though I don't remember seeing this scene. I'm sure it was funny! Aside from Gilligan, Mr. Howell and the Skipper were my favorite characters. 😊
I have seen the cut portion and thought it was funny in typical Howell fashion. I really like “Gilligan’s Island” also, but my top shows of all time are the Odd Couple (Randall, Klugman), F - Troop, Green Acres, Get Smart and Batman. Another great segment Rick, we really appreciate the time you spend getting these to us. Take care and be well.
I've watched all the old Bob Newhart episodes many times and knew they cut scenes- there would be a photo in the credits that hadn't been in the show, for instance. But! Different channels cut different scenes, or they recut the shows, because when I watched the Full episodes on DVD there were very very few things I hadn't seen
I'm a don't bug the mosquitoes episode for favorite episode. Me TV edits out the song He's A Loser. Amazing how the mosquitoes play electric guitars without speakers!
Hey, Rick! Great factoid! I watched Gilligan's Island many, many times since it's initial broadcast and never saw this scene. Great find! On another note, there is an episode I only ever saw once: the episode where we learn why it is called Gilligan's Island! If I remember correctly, it was in season 1 because it was in b&w. Strange that I only ever saw it once!
I remember seeing this scene, in particular, throughout the 60s and 70s. It confused me at first. I was very small, and I remember thinking, "How can trimming and buffing grass blades keep an island from sinking?
Back in the day, the local TV stations used to cut the shows themselves. So, I haven't seen Gilligan's Island on TV in years. However, I DID visit my mom and dad a few years ago and they were watching it on, I think, Nickelodeon. It was sped up (OK, at least no scenes omitted, so far as I could tell) but it was wall-to-wall commercials with a little bit of show thrown in!!! Happily, I have my DVDs of the show and love each and every one of them as they were in their original form. You're right, Rick, Gilligan's Island is awesome even after almost 60 years!
Mostly, yes. None signed residual paperwork, there’s debate about Dawn Wells yet she was hard on her luck and was asking for donations so even so it may not have been much. But Bill Frawley aka Fred Mertz from ILL is still getting residuals from the show….his estate is
sadly true, Most of the actors in the sixties and into the seventies had contracts where they would only get residuals for the 1st three airings of an episode in reruns. The way some actors got around this was they would have a stake in the show as producer or some other title where they could get residuals in perpetuity. Elizabeth Montgomery in Bewitched and her husband Howard Asher were given the title of creators and she got residuals until she passed away.
I was part of the original target audience. I saw it when it aired originally. Before the early 80's the FCC had strict limits on the amount of commercial time allowed per hour. The rebroadcast in the 70s were pretty much aired intact. After the time limits were effectively dropped reruns got scenes cut out and infomercials began.
YUP I grew up in Louisville, KY and in the early-mid 1970's we got an independent UHF station WDRB-41 and aired this uncut in order among other great shows I''d watch after school each weekday (Lost in Space, Voyage to the bottom of the Sea, Spider Man, Speed Racer, of course the loony toons including some pretty rare episodes you'll NEVER see again outside of maybe a DVD collection, Bullwinkle, Tennessee Tuxedo, and later on the 6 million dollar man, Bionic Woman and Battle of the Planets) I watched probably every episode of Gilligan's Island a couple times and I remember this scene very well, even as probably an 11 year old thinking of how absurd this was not just trimming but buffing the tip of each blade of grass! :D Every time I watch MeTV I it takes me back to those days!
I remember a lot of scenes being cut out because the local station was cramming in more and more commercials. At one point I timed it and there was 12 minutes of show, and 18 minutes of commercials. But I remembered the original shows when they aired years prior. I probably saw it when it aired before the edited versions were released.
GI was on constant syndication by our local NBC affiliate after school at 3:30pm every day through the 1970's into the mid eighties. So yes, I seen them all, including this scene, a few times. I could quote every line of dialogue before it was spoken.
Mr. Sherwood Schwartz produce some gems when he produced this and the Brady Bunch. He also produced a couple of other TV programs that no one has ever heard of. It is kind of funny acceptance of his talent pretty much fizzled out in in the mid 70s.
Swartz Sounds like a tight wad... I don't believe The cast From Gilligan's island or the Brady bunch received Residuals... And I know some of those actors could have used the money... I loved Gilligan's island and the Brady Bunch... I'm now 62 years old.
Saw the show originally in reruns as a kid in the 70s since I was born the year it came out. That scene with him cutting and buffing the grass is hilarious! I hate that in the last 15-20 years so much gets cut from all my favorite shows I grew up watching after school. I’ve started getting DVDs of shows because that’s the only way to see them all.
Yep, Rick I've seen that scene before. I'm old school and watched Gilligan's Island from the start. I can most of the time recall from the edited versions of today that something is missing...but thanks
When I look at the still promo shots and Bob Denver standing there, looking a geek with the white nylon lines looped over his right shoulder, I still laugh.
I watched every episode over and over back in the 70's when the stations just ran them uncut. I do indeed remember that scene. And like most Jim Backus scenes it was solid gold. They would run the monster movies straight from the can also. Sometimes letting us teenage boys have a peek at a little T&A. Being smart, boys back then kept our mouths shut and didn't tell our parents. This went on for around 3 years in the mid 70's after school Big Show, that only boys watched.
That Mr Howell scene is a very famous. Growing up in the 1960's most parents favorite punishment for their sons fighting in school was to make them cut the lawn with nail clippers.
I did see the scene, and on broadcast TV...maybe the market I saw it in cut somewhere else. I was intrigued by your brief comment about episodes being "sped up." I'd noticed that in a couple of things I watched, the characters doing some fast talking...but had not till now run across confirmation of it. Thanks for that.
I actually do remember that scene when it played on television, and I never forgot it because how funny it was, Mr Howell was hilarious
He was so so funny lol
I saw it too. TV was our life in the 60’s.
Ditto - once I saw the emery board, I remembered this scene like it was yesterday.
I'm 71 and still ❤.Gilligan's Island RIP Pretty Dawn Wells

Thanks man! Yes, they had the best chemistry
I look for it every time....pretty funny, always liked that little snippet.
Yes, I also noticed it.
Several years ago, was annoyed to see MeTV cut out some of the song performed by the girls as The Honey Bees.
😮😢
That's a shame, their song was I think the best part of that episode! On one hand I love that MeTV even exists, on the other hand, well, DAMN..... I guess it is what it is!
Yes, they cut out all the solos! Beginning and ending was all we saw, it was the best part of that episode.
I remember watching this episode when it came out in the 60's. It bothered me that the Professor didn't notice the shoreline of the lagoon 'not' flooding, but placed all of his focus on that one goofy bamboo stick in the water. Oh well, to much skeptical thinking when I was 8
I guess he was not an oceanographer
I never thought of that! The Professor could be a little too into facts and miss the big picture

Pandalynn-You are so right. Just like I didn't agree that Gilligan's Island should have been canceled just to make room for Gunsmoke.
Mrs Howell wakes Mr Howell by riffling a stack of bills. Mr Howell says they're playing my song!

I found it amazing that 3 of the castaways had doppelgangers and all 3 managed to show up on the island
Gilligans Island was my favorite show as a child and I did see this screen way back in the day. I’m that old lol!
"Uncensored version"? Never thought I'd ever hear that remark applied to "Gilligan's Island." LOL
I saw that scene first run and also when it was first in syndication in the late 1960s-early 1970s. It was funny. thanks for highlighting it.
I remember this scene. I'm sure he charged them by the blade.
Haha by the blade
Star Trek was another series they butchered for syndication, and even (unforgivably) cutting out one of Uhura's songs in Charlie X.
Rick - Is it true that the cast of GI missed out on years and years of residuals even though the show has been on consistently for sixty years?
Mostly, yes. None signed residual paperwork, there’s debate about Dawn Wells yet she was hard on her luck and was asking for donations so even so it may not have been much. But Bill Frawley aka Fred Mertz from ILL is still getting residuals from the show….his estate is
Same sad story for the Brady Bunch
sadly true, Most of the actors in the sixties and into the seventies had contracts where they would only get residuals for the 1st three airings of an episode in reruns. The way some actors got around this was they would have a stake in the show as producer or some other title where they could get residuals in perpetuity. Elizabeth Montgomery in Bewitched and her husband Howard Asher were given the title of creators and she got residuals until she passed away.
I LOVE Gilligan's Island. Yes, I remember this scene. Growing up in the sixties, this was a must watch for me.
I grew up watchin Gilliagan and I do remember watching Mr Howel trimming grass. thank for bringing back all the memories from your shows.
I have most definitely seen this scene 😊
I remember seeing this scene in syndicated prints back in the '60s and '70s.
I remember a lot of scenes being cut out because the local station was cramming in more and more commercials. At one point I timed it and there was 12 minutes of show, and 18 minutes of commercials. But I remembered the original shows when they aired years prior.
I probably saw it when it aired before the edited versions were released.
I'm 56, and i remember this scene, and then i remember it being missing.
I remember this scene ...so funny... So absurd, how could you forget it?! LOL
I remember this scene as a child.
I remember that scene from when I was a kid back in the 60s. I thought of it immediately.
GI was on constant syndication by our local NBC affiliate after school at 3:30pm every day through the 1970's into the mid eighties. So yes, I seen them all, including this scene, a few times. I could quote every line of dialogue before it was spoken.
To this day, whenever I hear the term "manicured lawn" I imagine Thurston Howell.
Love your channel, would you please do some episodes on the Wonder Woman tv series? 😊
Surprisingly I remember seeing that scene when it first aired.
One of my favorite re-run shows. Yes. I have seen this scene.
Used to be able to notice when they cut out scenes from the original Star Trek from when it ran on NBC to when it was syndicated.
Yep, Rick I've seen that scene before. I'm old school and watched Gilligan's Island from the start. I can most of the time recall from the edited versions of today that something is missing...but thanks
Yes. I've seen that scene. It's hysterical.
I have indeed seen that particular scene.. now granted it was MANY years ago, but, I do recall seeing it.
