IMO the breen are Warhammer 40k's Space Marines. Their ranking system includes "Scion" and "Primarch" which im pretty sure are both from 40k. Also they have a bizarre quasi-religious government in which everybody is extremely devoted to *something* that seems completely pointless to outsiders and its all they ever think about and the only time there's ever any dissent is when they doubt their own leader's dedication to the cause.
Also the crap the with "Erdigahs" and "Blood Bounties" is ridiculous. how the fuck did they get from "never turn your back on a breen" to Michael handing over the puzzle as long as they make a sacred, irrevocable promise not to blow up the library. also imagine if she just included not blowing up discovery or making peace with the federation or anything else in that.

They should have never explained the Breen. They could have still used them but never taken off the helmets. Just maintain the secret of what they look like - it makes them so much more interesting.

It's stupid writers without any imagination of their own that think they are being clever by 'explaining' every damn thing they can find. Usually they do not have the knowledge to do it right, so continuity mistakes are bound. Apart from that, we don't need every damn Breen, Han Solo, Guinan, Yoda or every other character or race to have an origin story.

They had done way better in Memory Beta in which they reveal that the Breen are in fact a collection of alien races, a sort of military stratocracy version of the Federation, which "accept" only races that prove valutable to the Breen Confederacy military effort. The reason for why they had all helmets is because the Breen Confederacy was formed after the original three founding races unite to fight off against a shapeshifter race, so they adopt the helmets to denied the greater advantage that their enemy had on them (which always made me think that the Breen had a sort of "hidden agenda" in their alliance with the Dominion). Heck I red once a fandom article about the character of Jennifer Sh'reyan, an Andorian secondary character in Lower Decks, in which it would have reveal that in Jennifer is a Breen Secrect Agent, since she is in fact an Augmented Andorian, a offshoot of the main Andorian races that was forced to abandon Andoria after losing the "War of Lament" (in Memory Beta, the Andorian version of World War 3 that happen in the 16th century) and it join later with the Breen, but it definitely was better than this STD garbage....who here doesn't think that Discovery de-facto is copying the Orville at this point?

Stubborn Kurtzman won’t let this die, the Starfleet Academy show is based in this same dystopian Discovery 31st century future. Allegedly they REALLY panicked about the popularity of Terry Maralas’s Season 3 Of Picard, so they are doubling down on their Discovery universe because ultimately they want to affirm their importance to the studio, so their contract is renewed again. Pushing Matalas’s vision forward would undermine Kurtzman’s productions and creative choices, so Legacy will never happen - instead we will see more Discovery-lore. They hired Matalas but ultimately resented his popularity and success. If Kurtzman lets Discovery ‘go’, it will be like admitting defeat and showing the studio that he doubts his own choices. He has become a VERY wealthy man and will want the SecretHideOut contract renewed by Paramount.

My favorite part was when I was watching the discovery bridge crew talk in amazement at the glory of finding the object, while I was screaming at the screen "beam it aboard and jump away" but they sit there for so long that the Breen arrive and of course they beam it aboard, causing the entire plot. They knew the Breen were on the way, they knew the clock was ticking and yet again in Discovery, they have no sense of time and in critical moments they take a long time to act.

The top execs at Paramount are paying Kurtzman A LOT of money and have made him a ridiculously wealthy man - but there is also understandably a lot of scrutiny on him and his SecretHideOut productions. His vision has clearly polarized the fanbase and driven a huge amount of fans away. He can not let Discovery ‘die’ because that will be like admitting defeat. He ultimately wants his contract to be renewed by Paramount a third time (I pray, when that day comes, that it won’t) so yes, as you say, sadly this Starfleet Academy show that nobody asked for - will be based in the same 31st century dystopian Discovery universe … we will probably see Discovery or Burnham in cameos, we suspect Tilly will be a permanent cast member as they’ve set her up as a teacher at the academy. Terry Matalas, even though Kurtzman OK-ed him being hired, was greatly resented for creating a success with Season 3 of Picard - as it undermined Kurtzman and his close staff. New guy comes in, clearly a loyal Trekkie and has a history with 90s Star Trek… and makes a huge success of things. It’s not in Kurtzman’s financial interests to allow Matalas to succeed again - I don’t think it’s any coincidence that Lower Decks (which celebrated 90s Trek) or Prodigy (which stylistically was close to 90s Trek) was all cancelled.

    • @danielhogston
      @danielhogston 4 місяці тому

@@ah7910 yeah sad, I actually enjoyed Lower Decks and Prodigy, stylistically I liked Picard Season 3, but was ultimately disappointed by the story arch, Enterprise D flying like the Millennium Falcon… and renaming the Titan-A to Enterprise-G was disrespectful in my opinion, spoiled the whole show. Discovery, Picard (overall) and SNW have been vandalisations of the franchise in my opinion.

21:10 Two stabilized black holes are one of the most intresting things in space, every spacefaring civilisation would at least send a probe to it. Remember that the Enterprise even stopped for analyse an asteroid. And the most intresting point of the binary black holes would be the La Grange point. Moreover, the progenitor device is simply there to pick up by somebody, the clues and stuff isn't needed. The helmet scene hasn't remind me of the Power Rangers, but of Starcraft, the little animated pictures when you select certain units.

My prediction for the last episode:
Ugly Wig will have the chance to revive her husband without any consequences whatsoever, but Saint Michael will tell her "Ugly Wig, we cannot bring back the dead" [although they totally can], "you have to let him go. I've lost my parents, and my mother was sent into future without spacesuit and I never thought of her again. Come with us and I'll ask for leniency "
Ugly Wig kiss her husband goodbye and watches him liquify
She, Book and Michael group-hug and a Saint Michael voiceover starts as the camere moves away:
"Life, death, it's what makes us who we are. We the beings that feel, laugh, live; cry and mourn" [montage of the old scenes] ...
Starfleet has taken the progenitors tech for safe keeping at an undisclosed location, they be studying it for centuries."
    (Screen fades away)
    "TWO WEEKS LATER"
(We see Ugly Wigs, with a new more less retarded hairdo, in an Starfleet admiral uniform)
"As for Ugly Wig, after serving hwr sentences, she joined starfleet and quickly climbed the ranks"
(We see the door in fornt of Ugly Wigs opening, and there is St. Michael)
"Reporting for duty, ADMIRALESS Ugly Wig"
And then they hug and cry

I agree with most of the analysis and that this episode was actually somehow fun to watch. It's just sad, that they stretch nothing over 8 episodes only to make a somewhat decent finale.
But I also have some points to what you said:
5:10 well, if they open their helmets, the Discovery crew could theoretically have some simulated effect as well so that wouldn't help them identify them. They haven't but what IF they had that effect active?
7:30 they said the navigation system is damaged, so they are not capable for an exact jump, so they only jumped somewhere near it. And given that the Breen even take a while to get there with transwarp, the scanners of the discovery aren't probably able to scan that far. But they could have some star maps in which they see what is there, unless the black holes just appeared there recently.
20:00 I don't think the Breen said "come to the party" but the name of their fest. As if a human asked an alien if they'll join to Halloween. How should an alien know what's meant with that, if they haven't studied the human race?
21:00 I think they mentioned that it's really small and could be easily missed (or seen as trash) if you don't know to look for it. But yeah, if it's made from such an inpenetrable material, someone should have picked it up.

We know that the Discovery Ship is not the only ship capable of using it because they literally upgrade the tech to 2.0 and Book's ships is able to use it and they make a big deal about it. I think it could have been more exciting if they’d used the Borg this season. I know haters gonna Borg-hate but one could imagine that the Borg could be very interested in this technology. They could have taken the opportunity to present the Borg more in the original style of a hive mind and not depicted a Queen. Gave them a 32nd century makeover. Discovery and SNW are dark, dimply-lit, depressing and dystopian… Frakes knew Gene Roddenberry personally. He just wants to get paid.

This episode is all about photo ID.
If you can't tell who a person is on your ship then you have to have a way to identify them.. This is not 1977.
And you can't have this big evil villain alien that has holes in their shields. And if they do have holes in their shields then why do you have the crew tell each other that the mission is going to be impossible?
If this were an action comedy then make it funny. But you can't have a serious action episode if you have no stakes.
And you have to get rid of Moll. She's a SNL character. She takes over the Breen in a second.
And why go back and do soap opera with Saru? Why spend three beats as Adira looks like Wesley looking at Burnham looking at Stamets?
But the worst was the ending scene, where you had Discovery crash into the other ship. And it was just a minor inconvenience. Books body was not thrown into space. The ships did not explode. Why don't they do this more often?
Why didn't the Breen just blow the discovery up? Kill all its crew? Transport them into space? Instead they just sit there.
    Who is writing this garbage?

      second.
‘And why go back and do soap opera with Saru?’ - isn’t it obvious, like most everyone else they’ve done this with, it’s going to end tragically.

IMO this season's "not entirely bad" episode was Whistlespeak, because it was the only episode where they were doing "normal" star trek things - they go down to some primitive world disguised as the indigenous inhabitants, learn about their beautiful culture, encounter some problems caused by the broken-down humidifier and attempt to resolve them without breaking the prime directive before eventually giving up and revealing themselves.
It wasn't a *great* episode but i will say it was good enough to be a somewhat forgettable but not-necessarily bad TNG ep. If every episode of nutrek was like Whistlespeak I would not be complaining nearly as much. Old-trek wasn''t always good, sometimes it was boring and sometimes the plot was unintentionally ridiculous (ie most of Voyager) but even when it was bad it was a show about a consummate group of professionals living on a starship together and trying to solve problems and make the galaxy a better place in accordance with a well-defined sense of ethic and responsibility.
Even when Star Trek was boring or repetitive you could still look up to somebody like Janeway or Archer and admire their integrity and see the person you wish you could be. And I kind of got that feeling from Whistlespeak even though it had its fair share of ridiculous moments like convincing us that a morbidly obese woman in her late 30s who took forever to get promoted is "the queen of endurance".
Anyways, this week's episode was just another dull action piece like most of Discovery and nutrek in general. It's treading water, padding out the season by barely revealing anything about its mystery box (in this case a literal mystery box) because they have to save that for the finale because the only two episodes that ever truly matter ito the writers n nutrek are the first and last episode of each season, and the others are really just there so that you keep your paramount+ sub active for at least three months,

So happy to see this absolutely atrocious show go away for good. The writers have been consistently horrible for five seasons in a row. And I'll never forgive them for completely abandoning one of the biggest hallmarks of Trek: creating a bridge crew that ALL have complete personalities and their own storylines. What a massive waste of time and money all of this has been. It just makes me appreciate all of the Trek that came before.

I didn't feel things made more sense in this episode, on the contrary :) For instance L1 is not a stable Lagrange point (Ex Astris Scientia explains this). You made a good point about the away team not concealing their faces under the helmets. In Strange New Worlds, they have the technology to conceal their looks with DNA modification. Maybe this wouldn't work with the Breen look, but in season 2 of Discovery we saw Emperor Georgiou using some kind of Section 31 holographic technology to modify her look under a helmet (in her first scene of that season).
There was also a funny visual goof in this episode. When Michael and Book take their Breen helmets off, you can see that Michael's hair was already hanging outside the helmet. Not really masters of disguise :)

    • @JacekJurewicz
      @JacekJurewicz 4 місяці тому

Some more things: It seems that the Breen suits don't offer any protection in hand to hand combat. In fact, it's enough to pull out the pipe at the back of the neck to incapacitate them.
What also stuck out to me was when they said there were no casualties after the battle in the last episode (and I think the same was the case with the archive). In TOS redshirts were dying on each away mission, to show how dangerous it is. In Discovery it would be too triggering to say that even one faceless crewmember died in battle. Or maybe Michael is such an awesome captain that no one can die under her command (unless it's an epic death scene with someone consciously sacrificing themselves).

None of the Lagrange points are stable for bodies of similar masses. In reality, none are stable at all for extended periods of time. On the other hand, 800 years is nothing on the cosmic scale…

None of them have the slighest idea what it will do. Maybe the somehting like the Tal'Shiar Galaxy destroyer could happen. Everyone in range could be crystallized into data or something Star Trek-y.
