In this video: Last year I picked up this weathered and worn Raleigh. I'd spotted the Reynolds 531 decal and the Deore group. After a bit of digging I'd found a match in the catalogues... a Raleigh Avanti. A fairly uncommon bike but this was something different. It had been painted yellow well, and then roughly painted black. The 6 speed gearing had been replaced with 7 speed XT and the small GoD decal sat on the downtube. A subscriber commented saying I should make a Team Banana replica and even offered up some paint and decals so that's what I've done.
While the Team Banana is a road bike there is an urban myth that some Avanti's were painted in Banana colours for promotion.... maybe this is one that had the Team Banana treatment from GoD back in the day?

I love seeing somebody re-purposing old equipment and making the most out of old-tech. Most of the bike stuff from the 70s and 80s, especially from the big manufacturers (Shimano, Suntour, and Campag.) were of such a quality that they can be rebuilt and reused for decades. Just because you haven't got 12 gears and electronic shifting, doesn't mean you can't enjoy your cycling, if anything, to take an old bit of kit, cleaning and restoring it and making it work well, is an added element of enjoyment.

    • @MonkeyShred

For sure. I get a tonne of enjoyment from rebuilding these bikes and love riding them all the same.

Best one yet. The paint and finish is stunning, plus I'm biased because the Avanti is a real dream bike from my childhood. And I've never seen one in Banana livery before, I reckon this one is priceless.

It’s definitely a special one now. I’d be really interested to know the full history of the bike. Wonder if Raleigh can use the serial number to pull up a spec sheet from the time it was built 🤔

It's a weird one, I don't know why you'd ever want that much adjustable setback. Especially when you can accomplish the same thing sliding the saddle along the rails

Love this bike...although I generally hate bright yellow. 😑 I have a '91 Raleigh Technium with a mishmash of early 90's parts (colorway: splattered steel blue w/bare anodized silver main tubes). Raleigh and Bridgestone are my 2 favorite bike makes. I'm always on the lookout for a Bridgestone in my size.

That was fantastic work, well done, i was particularly impressed by your method of overcoming the obstruction of slotting the sealed BB into the BB shell when the rivet is obstructing, i have managed to overcome this previously on my road bikes by precision milling the "locating collars" (for want of better word, not the actual threads) to create a grove to allow it to feed through as if jumping over, if you will, I would not have thought of that, mainly out of fear of damaging vintage italian frames, but, to tap a thread and use a bottle boss bolt to mount the plastic cable guide insert, respect man !! if i need to do so in the future i will remember that method because if need be ,you can repeat it by using bigger bolts, that was a "big learn" for me, NICE JOB!

@@MonkeyShred holy crap, 100 squids is a lotta money! I’m in a similar boat, though. I want a set of braced risers and they seem almost impossible to find apart from in England, and they’re £75 and post to Aus and I’m not gonna pay it until I’m certain that I can’t buy them elsewhere, and obviously once I buy one, 7 will turn up on eBay for $10. I picked up my Giant today, damn it’s a lot of bike for $150, and actually my first bike with discs, and my first hardtail too, and it’s got 24 gears or something nuts like that. I’ll be lost. I’m actually thinking of a project for my old bike, I really want some wing nuts but they’re really expensive, so I figured I’d make my own with some scrap steel and either weld the nut into whatever I use, or use another wheel nut or something like that. Do you have wing nuts on any in your collections?

can you remember the size of the bottom bracket and head bearing? seeing your video, has inspired me to refurbish my Ozark! When i rebuilt my maverick, after stripping the paint, i went around the bike with krust, poured some down inside the tubes, done all the rust traps etc, was def better than factory finish, some guy bought it, only a few years back. hope its still going well. yep the following year, they moved the rear brakes and went to a unicrown fork.
