Welcome to China. Actually, call Xinjiang Muslim Province, is not that accurate. Xinjiang has a long history with so many various blended in cultures, had been a pure Buddhist area. Because of the blocking by the Himalayas. The culture from west went into China through Xinjiang as the gateway. The Buddhist came into China also from the silk road, the first foothold is Xinjiang which called 'the west region' in the past. There are dozens of ethnics in Xinjiang with different religions.
For sure, it's certainly, historically a mix. We saw a lot of Buddhist history as we visited other cities and went to more museums. Make sure to stay tuned for our next videos!
I always read and follow w'tern media 10 years ago until when i visited China, I woke up and realised most of the media were full of lies and smearing how negative of China, love China now and would love to go and visit again once i have enough savings 😂
That styrofoam you saw is probably for insulation, western and northern provences can get really cold during the winter. A lot of the old building are not up to the new housing standards so government and sometime individuals modify the outer wall with added material. You can see the original outer wall beneath the added layer, the insulation layer is usually made up with low density bricks and then styrofoam. The real tofu construction here is the fact that the insulation layer has fall off, the construction company might be in trouble if this is a government contract😅 Great video none the less, Safe travels and have a good time👍
Yeah I was going to say the same thing. It’s the insulation layer. I used to live in Beijing (North China, cold winter) and one day an old apartment building next to mine did the insulation renovation. That’s the first time that I knew such thing existed in buildings😂
@@baichuanren885 The main support is steel beams and concrete. That part is guarantee meets the safety standards. The foam outer wall is for insulation. It finishes by spraying fine sand or rock on it. It’s getting popular in the new buildings in Toronto Canada where I live. Just knock on the wall you will hear something that’s not solid. But that’s not a Tofu project. It may not able to handle impact but it can definitely handle wind, rain and snow.
Enjoyed the video. One thing that needs attention because it's misleading as well as incorrect. Xinjiang is not "China's Muslim Province", Xinjiang is a province in China with a large Muslim population. 🙂
lol bro.. We have entire buildings (sometimes rows of buildings) in NJ that (look like brick and cement) are made with foam, mesh wires and stucco. It's not a uncommon thing.
The air quality issue is most likely natural. If you are in the densily populated area in the eastern part of China like Shanghai or Beijing, air problem is likely to be caused by polution. But Xing Jiang has large uninhabited area, and is known to install hundreds of miles of solar and wind farms. The problem of air quality is most likely caused by sand storms. I don't think it is a fog, as that part is very dry and usually does not have fog, but that part is very likely to have sandstorm as it is close to some deserted areas.
It’s cloudy and later raining when they were filming, which added to that grey weather conditions. The air quality in some winter days in Urumqi is not ideal because there are indeed some air pollutions due to coal burning for heating. But like the rest of China, the air quality is continually improving.
To improve the air quality , China has planted over 66 billion trees as part of its Great Green Wall project, which is the world's largest afforestation project: The Great Green Wall. Nearly 90% of the year, air quality is fine even in big cities, winter has more low air quality days (365*88% is fine , 40 days from oct - April have low air quality), Urumqi used to be even worse)
Yeah, as I noted, Winter is always the worst for air quality. Same as anywhere in the world with air quality issues, something about the cold air keeps it close to the ground.
I really recommend that friends who want to go to Xinjiang should go between June and August. That is the most beautiful season of the year. Fruits are plentiful and the scenery is beautiful. It’s really too cold to go to Xinjiang in November, unless you want to go skiing in Ili. Moreover, the climate is continental, with cold and dry winters. Unlike Europe, although the latitude is high, there is a warm Atlantic current, so it is not that cold. This is the center of Eurasia...

How comes air quality in Urumqi being that low? Aren't the sales of EV in Urumqi as high as in the rest of CN, where air quality has massively increased due to EV rise and green energy? Also a lot of the green energy projects are in XJ, so that should shift things towards cleaner air, too, i would assume. Where does the bad air come from?
Others in the comments are saying lots still use coal to heat in the winter. We also saw lots of street vendors cooking with coal. We saw more EVs in China than any other country we have been to but there is still lots of IC cars too. It all just adds up, plus there is always industry but I don't know enough about that to make any meaningful statement in that regard.
If you look at the map, a big portion of Xinjiang is that big desert. Cities are built around that big desert. A lot of sand storms there. So the air pollution is due to that. Xinjiang and Tibet are magnificent places in nature but honestly, not very inhabitable due to its nature. Historically those two are impoverished regions with harsh living environment. Southern Xinjiang by that desert used to be infested by radical Islamic influence and terrorism and a place where no travellers dared to go, because of its poverty and closeness to Parkistand and Afghanistan. In recent years, it is completely changed to be a very safe place and popular tourist destination especially Kashgar. The Chinese gov spent a lot of efforts and resources to deploy security, reeducate people, provide employment and develop economy, and at the same time, created some controversies that have been blown out of proportion without much context in the western media as the west sees their interests in allying with the oversea East Turkistan terrorism groups and destablizing Xinjinag.

Thanks. We just like to document our travels, we don't care about views and we don't get our clicks from trying to polarize the world. It's already "Us vs Them" enough. Slowing desertification in northern China
Increasing forest cover from 5% to 15%
Stabilizing water resources
Absorbing carbon dioxide
Providing local people with resources like timber and fruit .

伊斯兰比儒家,佛教,道教更晚进入新疆,2000多年前儒家就进入了新疆,伊斯兰也只是乾隆时期才开始进入新疆
I always read and follow w'tern media 10 years ago until when i visited China, I woke up and realised most of the media were full of lies and smearing how negative of China, love China now and would love to go and visit again once i have enough savings 😂
That styrofoam you saw is probably for insulation, western and northern provences can get really cold during the winter. A lot of the old building are not up to the new housing standards so government and sometime individuals modify the outer wall with added material. You can see the original outer wall beneath the added layer, the insulation layer is usually made up with low density bricks and then styrofoam.
The real tofu construction here is the fact that the insulation layer has fall off, the construction company might be in trouble if this is a government contract😅
Great video none the less, Safe travels and have a good time👍
Good to know. Thanks 🙏
Yeah I was going to say the same thing. It’s the insulation layer. I used to live in Beijing (North China, cold winter) and one day an old apartment building next to mine did the insulation renovation. That’s the first time that I knew such thing existed in buildings😂
He is English, he knows, just for the sake of black.
这个要么是后面添加的保温层,要么是发泡剂填充物,都算常见的建筑材料,可能在比较隐蔽的位置所以破损了没有修复而已。
Enjoyed the video. One thing that needs attention because it's misleading as well as incorrect. Xinjiang is not "China's Muslim Province", Xinjiang is a province in China with a large Muslim population. 🙂
lol bro.. We have entire buildings (sometimes rows of buildings) in NJ that (look like brick and cement) are made with foam, mesh wires and stucco. It's not a uncommon thing.
It's not prohibited. Anyone who wants to go can go. Xinjiang is not a restricted area
Exactly as we said. Very easy to come to.
@@WanderingBluePassports Only Xizang(Tibet) has some limitations.
In Toronto, our new apartment uses stereo foam for the outer wall too.
China is different because we don’t listen to the west, we just did what we think is right
The air quality issue is most likely natural.
并不是没有水汽,这几天冷空气来了,冷空气和温暖气体碰撞就会有雾,很正常的自然现象
To improve the air quality , China has planted over 66 billion trees as part of its Great Green Wall project, which is the world's largest afforestation project:
The Great Green Wall.
But ...
🤣 2022-7-20 BBC: China is destroying the desert environment by planting trees in the desert .

from now to 2030, China's renewable energy installed capacity is expected to account for nearly 60% of the world's total installed capacity.
By 2030, China will have more than half of the world's renewable energy , and China’s solar energy output is equal to the entire nation’s consumption in the U$.
Pretty good actually compare it to the west lets say compare it in London or Paris
@@marklouieadame I just checked and right now Urumqi is at 172, London is at 78 and Paris is at 24 lol
@@WanderingBluePassportsIt may also be related to the burning of coal for heating in winter. Central heating is used in northern China.
Dehli is 1700.
No joke.
External wall insulation board,In order to reduce heat loss in houses in winter, this can reduce the energy consumption of heating and save more energy.
Your fan club found you on the museum! Super cute!
It was wonderful finally meeting the official Ürümqi Branch of the Wandering Blue Passports Fan Club.
We didn't actually get questioned by any police or military at all. We did just stay inside the city though.
We did of course have the endless small security checkpoints before entering buildings or market street or museums but they are more security theatre than actually checking anyone. It's just an x-ray conveyor that someone barely watches and then someone might wave a metal detector in your general direction 😂
@@WanderingBluePassportsBecause there have been many terrorist attacks by Muslims extremists in the past. Many Western cities have suffered similar attacks.
@@WanderingBluePassports, US has a lot to do with the security of Xinjiang. CIA involvement to break Tibet and Xinjiang away from China was rigorous. I am glad China has regained full control of these two autonomous provinces and maintaining a peaceful life hood. I visited these provinces in 2008 shortly after the Beijing Olympics and security was very dense in these two provinces and there check point everywhere. I had to apply for visas and hire a local guide to enter these regions.
Thank you for telling the truth!
Until governments start writing us cheques, there is no reason to lie. Good food, interesting history, bad air quality, styrofoam buildings, wonderful parks. It all gets mentioned.
@@WanderingBluePassports Don't dream about getting cheques.
Chinese food looks soooo good. Please tell me you are doing more "Following the Food Ranger" videos in China!
You bet ur butt we are.
How unfortunate that North American tourists tend to use Western perspectives to judge Eastern cultures. If you want to find faults to prove your biases you can and you will. It's easy to convince yourself that you've found evidence to prove your point, whether it's true or not. I too can judge others just by looking at them superficially without ever exploring their history in depth or trying to understand why they do things the way they do. That would take an open mind and too much time so why bother.
the styrofoams are for insulation, similar to the use of foam to insulatr wallls in the US.
Good to know. Thanks 👍
I lived in Vancouver for 10 years, which is already one of the best cities in Canada, and then I went back to China for 10 years, and to be honest, Canada is no better than China, and the quality of life in China is much higher than in Canada
Thanks for sharing your perspective. Depends what one values for their own quality of life. Some may prefer one or the other. One thing at least.... in Canada you don't need a VPN to access Pornhub! 😂 👹
spring and autumn are the two best seasons to be in xinjiang. You might see more armed police than other regions in China as there was a terrorist attack before. Other than that it is similar to other cities in China.
Thanks to CIA sponsored, East Turkmanistan Terrorist Groups.
😮Its US funded separatist that create chaos like it did in Hong Kong.
Best time visit Xinjiang is in the summer. All the fruit, all the Lamb and street food. Beautiful lake...Beautiful mountain. Winter time, central heating is bad for air quality, everyone is indoors, nothing to see, way too cold.
I am sure it would be even more beautiful in summer but it still was very enjoyable to visit!
wish you a wonderful trip. As your question about the styrofoam,it’s a insulation layer between bearing wall and outer layer. It’s a standard building code for many northern cities of China.
Good to know, thanks!
Not sure the Xinjiang ski resorts are already open? That would be another destination not a lot of foreigners visit.
That would be cool, this area of central Asia/around the 'stans' is said to have some of the best skiing in the world.
Abiut that tofu wall. Last year in the UK, people actually protest and sitting in the moddle of motor way to ask government add this insulation into the wall, to keep inside house warm. Xinjiang has done a great job.
I am thinking that the reason everything is so empty is cuz it is off season and that is also the reason why all public transportation are paired back to the bare minimum.
Could be, it was early November after all!
Thanks for sharing your video i always dream go to visit Xinjiang province one day i love to go down there it's so beautiful place to visit take care bye from milton Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
China is a wonderful place to visit and we highly recommend coming here. We have enjoyed it more and more each time we have come. (Stacey 3x, Tristan 2x)
😂 the audio guide in the Xinjiang museum is too funny, looks like they think visitors are most interested in the exact length and width of the artifacts
Hope you guys enjoyed Urumqi, I just got here and it's pretty cold
Yeah, we did enjoy it but we haven't found anywhere in China we didn't enjoy yet haha.
The last time we came to China it was November/December and we didn't learn our lesson I guess lol

Its near desert sometimes is mild sandstorm, couple with mist or fog.
😆China is the only country to have halal canteens on aircraft carriers.
All major Chinese universities have halal canteens.. also applies to Govt schools...
That's not smog, let alone pollution! It was cloudy! It will rain next! Xinjiang has no pollution! There are few people in the shopping mall because of working days, not holidays. The outer wall of the room is an insulation layer! Don't rub it in rhythm.
I like the buddhist music in the temple❤
It was playing while we were there so we recorded it to use!
They pronounced it as hong shan park, in mandarin, (hong) means red (shan) means mountain, so red mountain park, I have been there like 30 years ago, definitely much better now
Did you check the official report on air quality, or did you assume it is related to bad air quality?
We checked, as we said in the video!
@@WanderingBluePassports I agree with you on the air quality. You can notice the haze even in the video. In winter, many cities in China ( especially the north ) have this problem. China still have a long way to go to improve the air quality. Good news is China keeps working on it.
Just visiting Urumqi and Kashgar is like just touch and go. Xinjiang is so big. There are so many natural scenic areas like the Kanas, Sayram Lake, grasslands, deserted area and national parks to explore, so beautiful and well preserved natures.

Chinese people are in general very friendly, people are used to helping each other since the old agricultural times, don’t care your skin colors (color doesn’t make one superior or inferior in their eyes) in China since ancient times there are already so many ethnicities (colors of skin) but all speak Madarin or dialects. Those who don’t like China, doesn’t matter either, don’t have to come to China… won’t be missed… China has 1.4 B people already. Love China❤👍. It’s still so much better than the West! 🤫

Dudes, Wow ! What an extremely modernized city?
Amazing ... all of you
If you look at the map, a big portion of Xinjiang is that big desert. The Chinese gov spent a lot of efforts and resources to deploy security, reeducate people, provide employment and develop economy, and at the same time, created some controversies that have been blown out of proportion without much context in the western media as the west sees their interests in allying with the oversea East Turkistan terrorism groups and destablizing Xinjinag.
every modern house in north west europe has styrofoam, it works.
Winter really isn't a good time to travel in Xinjiang.
Xinjiang has this thing called Sand Storm. That might be it.
I like you, we just want ppl to see a real China, sure those saying shitty things good or bad about us only want to get more views, I believe the slient most are just want to see a true China as well.

Yes, carry your passports everywhere in China. I heard that you just need to use your passport as your train tickets. Some places probably check your passports for security reasons.
Avoid traveling in the north of China in Winter, the smog is the worst in winter. The mall you visited is probabaly a furniture mall.

Well there is a mall in the city where I live that they only sell home furniture and it is a 4 storey complex. There used to be a movie theatre there too but it is now closed because there are not so many people going there though it is my favourite cinema to go to.
