I watched this movie a lot as a kid and I always thought that Denahi was the villain. But watching it today, I haven't related more with a character before. Also the whole relationship between the three brothers gives me such a cuddly feeling, despite all the quarrels. It's part of the siblinghood!
Yeah, Denahi is an Anti-Villain (at worst)-he’s a guy with a very understandable motive who believed that his brother was killed and/or eaten by the same bear that contributed to their elder brother’s demise, unaware that his brother IS a bear
We had the bootleg version of brother bear and I still remember that DVD and playing it so much it would skip. I thought it was a funny adventure film about bears. 9:40 I never thought about Denahi picking up his brother's weapon and the meaning behind the scene, one more reason added to the pile of why I love this movie. Also one thing that I've always loved that you didn't mention is how the mother bear's eyes at the start of the movie look unreadable but after Kenai gets turned into a bear they all have these human eyes and are made to be relatable because we have now joined their world. We can understand their language and read their facial expressions, unlike the unfamiliar eyes of the mother bear
@@ancientdarkness3102technically it’d be a Brown bear. Brown Bears and Grizzlies are the same species, except Brown bears live on the coast and Grizzlies live further inland. It’s not just Koda’s mom, either-in the scene where Kenai is introduced as a human, the caribou stampede that he’s running from have dark, inexpressive eyes similar to that of real caribou.
@@GabyGeorge1996 im pretty sure bears from this movie are all grizzlies? There is no coast in the movie whatsoever if i remember correctly. Very true what you said about The caribou
Maybe it’s being the oldest sibling of four, but this movie had such an impact on me that I remember the first time I ever watched it. During a really long wait in a doctors office.
THE TOTEM QUIZZ! I spent as much time on that menu than watching the actual movie. It's so rare to see people actually giving some appreciation for this movie. People usually judge it for what they wish it would be rather than for what it actually is, and I think that's unfair to the film. You're also the first person to agree with me that having a song during the confession scene so we can't hear exactly what Kenai told Koda strengthens rather than weakens the scene. I don't think there is any dialogue that could have made the revelation as much of a gut-punch than simply seeing Koda slowly put the pieces of the story together and hjs horrified expression when it's over. Are you willing to ever speak about the sequel? I watched it as many times as the original as a kid and while it's certainly a bit strange it has a special place in my heart. I also really love Nita.
I remember renting out the sequel once or twice as a kid and having a good time! I haven't watched it in ages though, but it's something I'm willing to check out again :D
There is a full confession scene, but it was never fully animated. In the scene Kenai doesn’t say a lot of new things than the things we’ve seen in the movie up until that point: he did something really bad, so the great spirits turned him into a bear to make up for what he did. Though he didn’t know anything about being a bear and had to learn from another. Then it cuts to the things we do hear; “Koda, I did something very wrong.” Only in the deleted scene does Kenai literally say that he killed a bear, after which he says that Koda’s mom is not coming, making Koda connect the dots. He tells Koda that he swears he didn’t know it was his mom, but Koda runs away. I do believe that the song version is more powerful, because the lyrics “Brother Bear, I let you down. You trusted me, believed in me and I let you down. I cannot hide the shame, there’s nothing I can say or do to take away the pain.” hit me in the gut harder than Kenais full confession did.
This is a movie I come back to every now and then when I'm feeling low and anxiety filled. It's not something that cures or immediately makes me feel better, but I have a sense of a layer of those negative feelings peeling away. Like I can relate to the characters in this movie that way.
I loved this movie as a kid so I was always a bit sad most UA-camrs overlooked it. Looking forward to this video! Edit: Saw the video and I have to say I'm glad someone else appreciates the movie! I always felt like I'm crazy because everyone was hating on what I though was a heart-warming movie with beautiful art. I also mostly know the dubbed version in my language and the dubbed songs sound pretty nice, remind me of road-trip music so I never understood the overwhelming hate for them either. Love how you made me realize it actually was partly about what being a man means, I never thought of it that way. Great vid!
@Jasmine N. It gets some hate because of the music and poor timing for a lot of things. Plus I think some people didn't like how they tried to go for comedy after the bear change when the beginning started so strong
@@Anuyushi Spanish. Also, to the main comment I do kind of wish everyone just enjoyed it though all of humanity has their own quirks, their own life experiences that define them and their perspectives on life. With this film's critics, with the amount of them out there and the times of the era there was bound to be this amount of criticism lodged at them, and yet their criticism is extremely clouded in our combined opinions, all coming together to form the image of a great movie that definitely should've gotten more praise.
@@Anuyushi i am confused i don't remember any poor timing i felt it was perfectly fine. give me examples of poor timing not a vague nondescriptive "lots of things"
"I don't blame the bear, Kenai" is a line I can't help but think of in excess when thinking about this movie and the rift formed between the brothers. I love this movie. It's one that talks about learning perspective and compassion. Learning to see and understand someone else's perspective.
The scene where koda tells kenai and everyone about how him and his mom getting separated still gives me goosebumps till this day, I love Brother bear, it's been one of my favorite underrated Disney films ever since I watched it
I can't understand why critcs destroyed this movie. 37%???!! Really?! The transformation sequence in my opinion is as the same level of epic like circle of life. The whole plot is really original and the charcters are charming. Disney bring back this masterpiece!
Personally, I think it’s because of the tonal/mood whiplash: the first twenty minutes of the film are epic and dramatic, while things get cartoony and vibrant with talking animals once Kenai wakes up after falling from the cliff into the river, and from then on out it’s a roller coaster of highs and lows between the two tones
This was one of my favourite movies as a kid, so much so I would play the Brother Bear PC game non-stop after I returned from school and did my homework. This movie has a specific place in my heart that no other movie can replicate, even if to most this movie is nothing special.
OH YESYESYES FINALLY!!! I was god obsessed with this as a kid, I’m so happy to see someone else acknowledge its existence apart from just complaining at how bad of a film it was and to trash on the soundtrack (which, granted, both aren’t perfect but they’re not as horrible as they’re made out to be). Thanks for the lovely video!
Brother Bear was always a comfort film for me. One of my first dogs that I remember was named after Koda in fact. There was something about this movie that always drew me back. I never understood the weird hatred this movie has. This movie and Lilo and Stitch oddly enough made me more interested in native cultures despite not being native myself. Before Princess and the Frog came out, I used to even think that this movie was talking towards me and kids like me.
I have watched this video a few days ago, but I finally realized after watching “Finally someone talking about Brother bear in a positive light and not trashing it.”
This was always one of my favorite movies, for exactly the reasons all spelled out in the video: no real villain, the beautifully painted backgrounds, the entire story just being about embracing LOVE as what makes a man a man and rejecting the toxicity Kenai had built up in his head? it's just so amazing and wonderful and of my favorite stories. I would love to see you do Brother Bear 2 as well because I adore the hell out of that movie haha. I just frickin love Brother Bear! "oh hey.... just like Brother Bear... Man I wish I was watching Brother Bear instead" made me LOL, that's exactly how I felt too XD (I love this movie so much i'm finally commenting on a video for once instead of just watching and leaving a like XD;;; i've been watching your stuff for the longest time and i love it)
Brother Bear was one of my favourite movies growing up. The music, the story, the visuals, the characters. All perfection :) Also, Look Through My Eyes is a truly gorgeous song! One of my favourites from Disney.
I've always loved this movie and never understood why it wasn't considered one of the 'good' disney movies. I always thought this was an incredibly heartwarming story. Thank you for making this video!
Not sure if you already watch this channel, but 'Sideways' has an excellent video on brother bear's musical score (specifically the spirit scene) along with other cultures represented in Disney and how they work with their respective films
One thing worth to mention is the setting of Brother Bear is more unique than it may seem, not only is it set in an indigenous community, its also takes place somewhere during the last glaciar period (Which is why Mamooths appear.)
i think what also makes this movie feel more personal is that joaquin phoenix, who played kenai, also went through the same thing (losing his older brother river and becoming the older brother to his sisters). i loved this movie as a kid because sitka and denahi looked like my own brothers.
I'm so so glad this movie is finally getting the attention it deserves! It is my all time favorite Disney movie, ever! I even have a tattoo from is. I'm just so happy people recognize it's greatness!
i absolutely adored this movie as a child! I had it on i believe dvd, and while I don't remember much of it, I remember my mom mentioned it to me a lot because of how much I loved it! I think the dvd ended up getting really scratched up over time so after a while I stopped watching it, but I still have nothing but fond memories around it
Not only you like this film, you can persuade others to like it as well. That's great. Disney does best when they are experimenting and not pleasing the mass audience. That's why most people don't know about this film. But we do.
Watching all the new Disney animated films, they only made me appreciate more and more the experimental era. Sure we had some embarrassments like Dinosaur and Chicken Little, but I will remember those movies because they're different of the Disney formula. Brother Bear is different of what most Disney movies are. It's not a fairy tale or a musical, it's not about a princess, it's not even an Outcast story, it's about a human who has to learn what it truely means to be a man and how he has to choose love over grief. It's not a perfect movie, and neither one of my favorites, but Brother Bear will always be an enjoyable watch to me. I have fun memories watching the film, and I still do to this day.
18:20 Finally! Most seem to hate this scene, bc we don't hear the strory. But I like the final version bc it shows him telling the story, not tells, show don't tell. We see the emotions and expressions and we can understand what Kenai tells Koda with out movie straight up spoonfeeding it to us
Aw man I loved this movie so much growing up! My dad and I still quote the Moose brothers’ I Spy tree game at least once per month, so it’s nice to see someone actually doing a deeper dive into it. It’s definitely got it’s issues representation- wise, and I am also definitely not an expert on that either, but it’s still an interesting, nostalgic film for me, so thanks!!
This movie was my childhood, and it always made me a little sad when people ripped on it for the music, or the campy side characters. It was the brothers and their relationship that always got me, as someone with siblings. The idea that there's a lesson we all must learn to be a full adult rings so much truth for me.
Honestly, I'm so glad that someone made this video, and I would love for someone in the Native American or Inuit (not quite sure who would be correct term, so I'm leaving both) community made a video critiquing/reviewing the diversity present in the movie. Aside from that, this movie is very dear to me, a little bit surprised to rediscover the somewhat mature topics that it touched on. I used to watch it a lot when I was a kid, I think I still have the VHS tape. As I said, great video and yes!!! More. Bloopers. Scenes. Those were always super fun 🥰
The perception of human by animals and vice versa plays a big part in the character conflicts as well. As a human Kenai sees bears, specifically Koda’s mother, as a fish stealing monster and his transformation is direct karmic punishment for this. By joining the animal kingdom he better understands and respects it. Denahi doesn’t have the benefit of this insight and nearly kills his brother before realising the bear he’s trying to kill is indeed Kenai. Koda views humans as hunters, to be feared especially because of their pointy sticks, only trusting Kenai because of the ursine appearance. On the mountain all three have their preconceptions swept away and become better for it, understanding that man or bear, neither are truly monsters.
I have mixed opinions towards Brother Bear. There's stuff that I love; Denahi not being a villain, the indigenous culture, the transformation scene and mature themes and stuff that I'm not satisfied by; the humor and people of color being turned into animals or random things in general. But I do enjoy Brother Bear and I feel strong nostalgia towards it. Unpopular opinion: I find Brother Bear more enjoyable than the first Ice Age movie.
@Jasmine N. Huh, what? In Turning Red the Panda Transformation was an extremely importat part of the entire plot and the Panda Transformation was what drove the plot forward (and Mei constantly switches between her Human and Panda Version), it was not in there for no reason. The red Panda represents Puberty and also the repressed bad sides of Mei and her entire family.
With all the mixed opinions I've seen on video reviews for this movie, your take is a breath of fresh air. Always felt like Brother Bear was a pretty solid movie, also greatly backed up by the inclusion of Phil Collins' songs, and doesn't get nearly enough credit as it deserves. Awesome work! :D
I love this movie, never fails to put me emotional. When I rewatched it a couple years ago I couldn't believe it was made by Disney, honestly thought it was another studio. PS: puns were on point. keep 'em coming
The movie is only "okay" to me, it's far from bad but I dign't connect to it enough to think about watching it again, except for one scene: the one when Kinai immediately confesses to Koda. Not only it destroys my most hated trope, "the liar reveal", but since I was a kid I admired Kinai's honesty and in that moment I started rooting for him. I recommend people to give this movie a shot for that scene alone. Also you're the first english-speaker person I hear talking good things about Phil Collins lol
It’s the moment Kenai gives up his pride, knowing he has to do one of the hardest things he’s ever done up to that point because he owes Koda the truth and it’s the first opportunity he can do this. He’s not coerced, it’s not Koda learning from another source, it’s Kenai doing the right thing because his conscience tells him that.
This has always been one of my favorite Disney movies ever since I saw it as a kid. Hearing you talk about it, and thinking about how much I love this movie made me want to cry happy tears. My boyfriend has never seen it so I'm looking forward to watching it again. It's probably been 4 or 5 years since I've seen it. Although, we always listen to the songs on road trips. The soundtrack is amazing ❤
OMG I COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN THE TANANA TOTEM QUIZ LMAO YES!!! I love both movies, the soundtrack is wonderful, the visuals are beautiful and the stories are meaningful!! Love love love
So not only was i obsessed with this movie, I was ALSO obsessed with the licensed game for PC! When you showed the images of the transformation I got literal chills! Thanks for bringing all the memories back!🥺💞
I just saw this movie today and it was heartwarming 🥺💞 This movie is so undeniably beautiful and phenomenal than what people say it was! I also loved the scene where Kenai tells Koda about his mother’s unfortunate fate, man that scene was so heartbreaking I started crying…😭 Beautifully underrated movie along with Treasure Planet and Atlantis The Lost Empire!😁💞💖
This is a film that came out the year before I was born so I watched the second one first and I loved it so much but watching this one.... I loved it even more!!! And I watch them both a lot now. Also Kida's voice actress is Rapunzel thankyou and good day.
Thank you for talking about the good in this movie! I've only ever heard people roasting it (it's pretty well deserved) but there are still so many good things in this film
This made me have to go rewatch it, so infinite thanks for that. I hadn’t seen it since my little sister was ten or so (it was her favourite, she’d watch it on repeat) and let’s just say I was not prebeared for that kenai/koda confession scene 😩😭💔 Love your videos, mainly because they are so full of love ♥️
When I was a little girl, I never understood why this movie was hated so much. I LOVE it. OMG I MADE THE BROTHER BEAR TOTEM QUIZ TOO!! You unlocked a memory in me wow
It's really good. Get the tissues. One of my favorite scenes is when they're alone and Koda tells the story of how he got separated from his mother and Kenai realizing that he killed her, because now Kenai really has to take a look at himself and live with the fact that he took the life of a child's mother. Honestly top tier 🙌🏿
Finally someone talks about this movie. This movie, Encanto and Lilo and Stich are the most relatable examples of how siblings are with each other

I never thougt about it but it makes so much sense. I always thought the mother looked a little bit different but I couldn't figure out what.
Also, the mother's design is the most realistic grizzly bear animation I've ever seen
@@ancientdarkness3102there’s that bit towards the beginning where they’re kayaking and Kenai almost gets eaten by some Orcas
Thank you, Drawpinion. You're giving the "middle child" generation one bliss after another. Too bad I can't throw my money at you (yet).
Middle Child Generation? Lol, I like that.
Great vid!
What language did you listen in?
Same.
I know people have had their issues with this movie, but you're right the core of this movie is just- sweet. I love it.
Brother Bear was always my favorite Disney film growing up.
Yeah, I know. It is on the same level as “Circle of Life”.
Me either this movie down right awesome! I don't care what anyone says about it being underrated! This truly one of Disney best films.
Because they aren't children 😂😂 if children could have rated it would get 100%
Personally, I think it’s because of the tonal/mood whiplash: the first twenty minutes of the film are epic and dramatic, while things get cartoony and vibrant with talking animals once Kenai wakes up after falling from the cliff into the river, and from then on out it’s a roller coaster of highs and lows between the two tones
This was one of my favourite movies as a kid, so much so I would play the Brother Bear PC game non-stop after I returned from school and did my homework. This movie has a specific place in my heart that no other movie can replicate, even if to most this movie is nothing special.
nice thumb nail.
FINALLY
FINALLY SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT HOW NICE THIS MOVIE IS
BROTHER BEAR IS A GOOD MOVIE AND I AM TIRED OF PRETENDING IT'S NOT
Lol it’s funny because Joachim Phoenix both voiced Kenai and played the Joker
'Tell everybody im on my way, with new places and people seeee'... ^w^ Love that song!
This was one of my favourites growing up! Kenai's confession to Koda made me tear up every time even then.
Kenai's confession is no doubt the best part. You can clearly hear the regret in Kenai's voice. He truly hated himself for killing Koda' mom.
Man I wish I was watching Brother Bear instead" made me LOL, that's exactly how I felt too XD
(I love this movie so much i'm finally commenting on a video for once instead of just watching and leaving a like XD;;; i've been watching your stuff for the longest time and i love it)
Brother Bear was one of my favourite movies growing up. The music, the story, the visuals, the characters. All perfection :) Also, Look Through My Eyes is a truly gorgeous song! One of my favourites from Disney.
Brother bear is also one of my favorite too!
I hope she talks about Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron next
I've always loved this movie and never understood why it wasn't considered one of the 'good' disney movies. I always thought this was an incredibly heartwarming story. Thank you for making this video!
Me too I freaking love this movie.
Not sure if you already watch this channel, but 'Sideways' has an excellent video on brother bear's musical score (specifically the spirit scene) along with other cultures represented in Disney and how they work with their respective films
18:00
One thing worth to mention is the setting of Brother Bear is more unique than it may seem, not only is it set in an indigenous community, its also takes place somewhere during the last glaciar period (Which is why Mamooths appear.)
i think what also makes this movie feel more personal is that joaquin phoenix, who played kenai, also went through the same thing (losing his older brother river and becoming the older brother to his sisters). i loved this movie as a kid because sitka and denahi looked like my own brothers.
I hope you're ok. Love your channel!
I'm so so glad this movie is finally getting the attention it deserves! It is my all time favorite Disney movie, ever! I even have a tattoo from is. I'm just so happy people recognize it's greatness!
The bear puns... I can barely contain my laughter XD
i absolutely adored this movie as a child! I had it on i believe dvd, and while I don't remember much of it, I remember my mom mentioned it to me a lot because of how much I loved it! I think the dvd ended up getting really scratched up over time so after a while I stopped watching it, but I still have nothing but fond memories around it
It's always a good time when Drawnpinion Dump uploads
On the DVD version, there was a “what’s your totem animal” quiz that I took several times. And now I’m addicted to uquizzes.
That’s a whole lot of bear puns in the beginning of this video
Why does it make me so genuinely happy every time I hear her say "Cause IIII wanna taalk.. aabout~ (Movie)"
Love this movie so much. Have thought of it heavy across the years since watching it. Love the color n animation of it too
Not only you like this film, you can persuade others to like it as well.
I loved brother bear when I was younger
Finally after years I’m noticing this is finally being talked about again. Brother Bear is my top favorite Disney movie alongside Encanto
Google saw me looking for bear reference photos for my fursuit and wanted to put me in mood i see
Finally, this is my favorite disney movie and no one talks about it.
Thank you for talking about my childhood movie.
...there's a positive review on UA-cam of this movie now...I can die happy!
And Tennana's DVD quiz was always such fun!!
The red Panda represents Puberty and also the repressed bad sides of Mei and her entire family.
pls come back we miss you :(
With all the mixed opinions I've seen on video reviews for this movie, your take is a breath of fresh air. Always felt like Brother Bear was a pretty solid movie, also greatly backed up by the inclusion of Phil Collins' songs, and doesn't get nearly enough credit as it deserves. Awesome work! :D
I got the Salmon on the DVD quiz and my best friend still calls me "fish person" because of it HAHA
It truly is one of the greatest movies ever made
Ah yes a beautiful underrated classic ♡ Fun Fact the person who voiced Kenai was no other than the Joker himself: Joaquin Phoenix 😊🥰
I love this movie, never fails to put me emotional. When I rewatched it a couple years ago I couldn't believe it was made by Disney, honestly thought it was another studio.
PS: puns were on point. keep 'em coming
@Jasmine N. exactly. I couldn't pin it out but you described it perfectly
Brother bear is one of my favorite Disney movies.
I forgot how beatiful the visuals of this movie were
This has always been one of my favorite Disney movies ever since I saw it as a kid.
Damn I remember this film I loved the animation
It was always my favorite Walt Disney Movie (=
This was an all time fav of mine as a kid :))
Thanks for bringing all the memories back!🥺💞
Brother Bear received mixed to negative reviews when it came out, but I actually thought it was sweet and charming. :)
I'm an only child and I loved this movie. Stories about chosen family siblings aren't as common, but it is beautiful.
Yes..... continue making me want to watch movies like this
Thanks for giving me so many Bear puns, my friends will surely enjoy my company now
Just a minute in and I get hit with these bear puns left and right
Ooooohhh baaaby was I right to hit the subscribe button 🔥🔥
It's nice to see somebody speak positively about this film.
I just saw this movie today and it was heartwarming 🥺💞
This movie is so undeniably beautiful and phenomenal than what people say it was! I also loved the scene where Kenai tells Koda about his mother’s unfortunate fate, man that scene was so heartbreaking I started crying…😭
Beautifully underrated movie along with Treasure Planet and Atlantis The Lost Empire!😁💞💖
i loved this movie as a kid and the songs are all bangers, never understood the hate tbh but to each their own
This is a film that came out the year before I was born so I watched the second one first and I loved it so much but watching this one....
I loved it even more!!! And I watch them both a lot now. Also Kida's voice actress is Rapunzel thankyou and good day.
As my parents can attest, this movie was probably my favourite "watch all the time" film when I was little.
Thank you for talking about the good in this movie! I've only ever heard people roasting it (it's pretty well deserved) but there are still so many good things in this film
Look. I love puns & bad jokes that annoy people, but that was too much. lol
You look like my mom. And your design just brought me an idea for my Luna Laguna's mom "Glinda Presto".
Going hard on the bear-puns there 😄. It was truly un-bear-reble to get through 🤣🤣🤣.
I have loved this film ever since I was little, but never understood how deep the film is
Thank you for reminding me of this film, I just unlocked memories of watching this in bed as a kid
This made me have to go rewatch it, so infinite thanks for that. I hadn’t seen it since my little sister was ten or so (it was her favourite, she’d watch it on repeat) and let’s just say I was not prebeared for that kenai/koda confession scene 😩😭💔
Love your videos, mainly because they are so full of love ♥️
This movie was a Masterpiece! I used to watch this movie everyday as a child
I love all the bear puns
When I was a little girl, I never understood why this movie was hated so much. I LOVE it. OMG I MADE THE BROTHER BEAR TOTEM QUIZ TOO!! You unlocked a memory in me wow
So nice to see someone with taste in movies!!! Lol thank you for this vid this is such an overlooked movie imo
I'm about to show this movie to my whole family in all honestly, this movie sounds really good
It's really good.
