These ads by Leo Burnett ended up going over terribly with the public and the campaign was dubbed the "The Drink Schlitz or I’ll Kill You” campaign that lasted for all of 2 weeks before it was pulled.

Yep, though after reading about it, the actual spot doesn't seem as menacing as I'd imagined. Esp. in the era of ads like "Us Tareyton smokers would rather fight than switch."

I think it was more like ten weeks. Don't take away their gusto!

@@uebergeek , I remember when the ad campaign came out. I wasn't paying any attention to the off screen questioner and hardly noticed the beer. But, since I gave this ad the same amount of attentiveness as I gave most other ads, the threats of violence seemed personal. Well, FUCK YOU TOO, GUSTO!!
The Tareyton ads didn't strike the same vibe. Some guy with an obvious make-up black eye can't be mistaken as a personal threat.

@@corbin101 , Wasn't personal to me but I was stunned by this awful approach of trying to grab the attention of people who weren't paying attention. This is one of the biggest misfires in advertising history, it killed sales and is cited as one of the factors in the decline of Schlitz.

I thought the football version of this was funny: "You wanna take away our Schlitz? Our gusto? We're gonna take you out for a pass...and you're gonna come back incomplete!"

How sad. When I was growing up everyone I knew drank schlitz. All the grown ups drank it and sometimes give me a little sip. LOL. When they changed the formula the bottom fell out. I remember people saying it was green beer. The taste was nasty. Now schlitz is an afterthought. Too bad. It was a damn good beer until they screwed it up

It has been re-released in the last decade or so with its original 1960’s formula. I just picked up a 6 pack of bottles and it’s very tasty. There’s no other American Lager that tastes like it.

They added silica or something like that in the brew process to act as a preservative... Needless to say didn't go over well.

READ THIS POST to know what happened to Schlitz. Instead of brewing the beer using corn, Schlitz went to using corn syrup. They even built an expensive new brewery in Baldwinsville, NY around this process. After Schlitz went belly up, it took Anheuser-Busch 2 years to convert that brewery to make beer the right way.

This 1977 ad campaign had a formula - "Gusto" was mentioned three times in every one I've seen so far. White man, black man, white woman - all say GUSTO three times.

Is Gusto some 70s term for gastroenteritis and diarrhea? I heard Schlitz gave people Gusto all the time after they changed up the formula. The public safety messaging of 70s like this one are well intentioned but odd.

Gusto is a term invented by Schlitz -- a pretend feature unique to their basic, common, everyday, indistinguishable beer. Marketing. It's a hoot.

Although amusing, it was a terrible ad campaign that, along with other big mistakes, ultimately led to the demise of the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company. Sad.
