Also this tool creates a flat surface to a level that's not going to happen hand-sanding with a belt sander for example. It also won't round over edges and can sand multiple parts to the exact same thickness. So it's not so much about avoiding sanding as it is doing it cleanly and efficiently. They also make a 19-38 model which is pretty popular, a lot of info out there on it...and also make versions that have brushes, which are good for cleaning up reclaimed wood before planing. I ended up going with this model for it's 50 inch capacity for table tops.

Awesome video. Thanks. I'm looking into buying my first drum sander for a small business. We'll run a couple hundred to a thousand board feet through the sander every week. I'm wondering how hard it is to swap out the roller. If I can. I'd buy a few rollers each spooled up with a different grit sandpaper. Too much work? And is it easier to just batch things and spend the $30 each time you switch sandpaper?
Nice! I wish I had room for one of those, but my shop is way too small and crowded already. My brother-in-law has a ~50" Timesaver I can go use when I really need to, but it's a business machine and it's about an hour round-trip, so I don't abuse the favor. I have the same dust collector. They had it on sale for 50% off because of a "dent in the motor housing" (actually just the end cap), and another 50% off for the Manager's Clearance Special with their tent sale last summer. And another 20% off with a coupon. I paid $35. :-D I made a cyclone separator for it with a trash can, a leftover section of 12" cardboard concrete form tube, two particleboard caps for the top and bottom (which includes a Thein-style baffle and a mating surface for the trash can), and a piece of 4" A/C duct as the injector/intake. The beauty of the design is that the 4" outlet hole in the center on top fits the dust collector perfectly. The dust collector sits on top. Pics on Instagram: intjonmiller.

How long are the sandpaper strips for the 25-50? (3” width I assume?) Great video. I was hesitant to order it because of the non-swivel casters. However, watching you slide it around fairly easily changed my mind. Ordered it last night.
Hi there. I have one exactly like this one. Have you had issues with it, not sanding evenly? I ran a piece of veneered maple plywood and across left to right, there are hit and miss. Support sent me a new bed, same issues. Appreciate if you can help help! Cheers!

Great video! I've been going back n forth between this and the Jet 25-50. Do you deal with a lot of sanding marks on your wood? I know this isn't a finish sander by any means but how has the finish quality been with this? The jet seems to be about 300-400 cheaper right now but the supermax just has so many good reviews. I am definitely confused on which to buy...

I havn't been using it for a lot of long stuff, most of what I've been using it for are 3 feet or shorter..........at least lately.

My main use of it will be for sanding components and bringing certain elements with tricky grain down to dimension. So far I've used it for sanding face frames for cabinets and highly figured ash with live edge, bark included....worked perfect.

While a sander technically does the same thing, you don't want to have to take down a lot of material with a sander. They are used in combination many times, planing away the bulk and finishing it off with the sander. Also the sander is used for things the planner can not be used for. For general woodworking you would have a planer before you get a drum sander. A lunchbox planer is a couple hundred dollars where the drum sanders are more expensive. This model is $2000. You might want to invest in a track and pulley down the middle of your shop. They make some low profile ones. Your back and legs will thank you. I have utilized overhead rigging for the heavy equipment and even a few large projects. Remember you only have one you.
+mark moleski I do, quite a bit. I've used it a good amount and it works great. Any drum sander is going to blow you away compared to the alternatives but I can't speak to other sanders. I've used a few other brands, but just on occasion. Having this one in the shop is great. When it comes to figured woods, thin stock, multiple parts, etc...you can't beat it. And when I need it, it's got 50 inches of capacity. It does what it supposed to and does it well, you made a good choice!

I am the same way. I spend money but it is usually an investment into my home or a project.
