  • Sunfire HRS-12 Home Theater Subwoofer - Craigslist $350 - MSRP $1,099
    Average Guy HiFi Rating - 42/50 = 84%
    Demo: Mad Max Fury Road 4K
    Website:
    www.warnerbros...
    Amazon link:
    www.amazon.com...
    Between Tron: Legacy and Mad Max Fury Road these have to be my all time favorite movies for testing speakers. Real stress tests!
    What Was Included:
    Sunfire HRS-12
    Link to Sunfire’s website:
    www.sunfire.co...
    Type - Sealed (acoustic suspension) enclosure
    Woofer - 12” extra long throw
    RMS Power - 1,000-watt amplifier (continuous power)
    Frequency response - 18 - 100 Hz
    Cabinet - Gloss Black
    Dimensions - 13-9/16"W x 13-3/4"H x 15-7/16"D
    Weight: 38 lbs.
    MSRP Value - $1,099
    Where I Purchased - Craigslist
    Price Paid ~ $350 (~ because it came with other speakers)
    Condition - 85% (not included in the Average Guy Hi-Fi score)
    Not in perfect shape as it has a couple blemishes in the gloss black finish but it’s in very good shape.
    Quality - 8.5
    This a sturdy little subwoofer. The cabinet feels stout and the driver feels even stouter.
    When you lean down to pick it up, you will probably underestimate it’s heft, due to its small size, you will likely be surprised. It is a dense little subwoofer!
    Bass - 9.0
    I was loving the deep so much that I kept this great subwoofer in my system for an extra week and that’s saying a lot as that delayed 2 other subwoofer reviews.
    The bass is deep and powerful, especially when you factor in the small size.
    MSRP Rating - 8
    Like the Martin Logan Abyss I recently reviewed, at a little over $1,000, the competition gets pretty stiff.
    The performance is outstanding so that allows me to give it a great score, even though it’s expensive.
    Aesthetics - 8
    I really like the looks of the subwoofer, but the beveled top edges aren’t my cup of tea.
    Minus that little gripe, I absolutely love the looks of 12” woofers with large surrounds, like the HRS-12 offers. Those types of woofers look violent even while unplugged.
    Price Paid Value - 8.5
    $350 is an amazing deal for this subwoofer, especially considering you can still buy it at the MSRP of $1,099. In fact, this subwoofer sold before I even reviewed it to a friend here locally.
    Average Guy HiFi Rating - 42/50 = 84%
    Final thoughts -
    This is an amazing performer, especially considering it’s diminished stature.
    This is one little violent subwoofer and it will find rattles you never thought you had. You’ve been warned!

    Do U think this Sub can replace my much bigger Velo DD15 SUb? The Point is, i dont need high Volumes...,
    had my DD15 max. 30% turned up. But need the high Quality low and precise Bass in low-mid Volumes.
    What do U think?

    • @blazermdx
      @blazermdx  4 місяці тому

      No way! You already have one of the best sealed subs on the market, for its time and size. The Velodyne DD series subs were extremely accurate due to the power and the Servo technology.
      This little sub is just fantastic but it can’t compete with that beast of a sub you already have:)

But the Specs of the HRS12 are even better than on my Dd15...the HRS12 goes down to 18Hz...., but the DD15 only down to 20hz...hats pretty strange..., So iam pretty curious the smaller HRS12 could even sound deeper......And another Point is the pretty high Power consumption of the DD15...the HRS12 needs only the half Power...ANd energy cost in Germany are momentary pretty high...(: because of our stupid Government and wrong energy Policy...So i still think the HRS12 could be a pretty good Replacement...I think i will try it...and will let U know the Results...there are some good offers here in Germany for 600-700 bucks for the HRS12. • @blazermdx
      @blazermdx  4 роки тому +7

      I’ve read that but I’ve read that about just about all that about all of the subwoofer manufacturers.
      Heat kills electronics. It would be nice if a couple manufacturers added silent fans to sealed subwoofers, to help dissipate the heat. I don’t think ported subwoofers are as prone to failure but I could be wrong
      I think forums can magnify issues as just about nobody posts when their subwoofer is functional but just about everyone posts when products go bad, to try to find a solution.
      I honestly believe that the high powered subwoofers go through amps, unfortunately. I’ve had a bad SVS sub, Martin Logan subs, Velodyne, Klipsch and I’m sitting next to a $1,900 REL with a bad amp.
      Subwoofers seem to be more prone to failure than just about all other HT gear. That’s really why I like the manufacturers that offer 5 year warranties with their products. At least you are guaranteed the subwoofer to be functional during that time.
      I know Sunfire has made improvements, with their newer models, so I wouldn’t hesitate to buy them over and over. This is one of the best performing, small, subs I’ve ever owned.
      With all of that said, I’ve definitely seen and purchased broken subwoofers in the past, like this REL, which are totally worth repairing.
      You are observant though as I have come across hundreds of broken, high dollar subwoofers over the years. Thank you again for stopping by!

    You mentioned that you prefer subs with passive radiators, what are the pro & cons of that style? Thanks!

    • @blazermdx
      @blazermdx  4 роки тому +3

      The pros of passive radiator subs are that you will get more oomph out of the same driver and you can accomplish this in a smaller package.
      There are cons but I can only think of one at the moment, passive radiator subs are generally more expensive.
      I’m sure we all interpret bass a little differently but I’ve always liked the punchy bass, the passive radiator subs provide. I’ve probably owned 12 or passive radiator subs over the years.
      Brands that offer/offerer passive radiator subs are Sunfire, GoldenEar, Definitive Technology, Episode etc. you should check them out:)

      The good news is, that you can just set up searches in your local area, on websites like FB Marketplace, OfferUp etc. As long as you are flexible on brands and are willing to drive, there are deals to be had.

    For a $1200 sub, I'm surprised the surround isn't rubber. I have a lot of speakers acquired over the past 50 years. Everything with a treated cloth or rubber surround is still good as new. But the few with foam surrounds all failed within 10 years.

    • @blazermdx
      @blazermdx  4 роки тому

      I think Subwoofer technology and reliability has come a long ways, the past 10 years.
      Unfortunately, I don’t have any experience with the SB3000 but I have owned SB2000’s, SB13 Ultra and various other SVS subs. I’ve read many reviews about the 3000, from people that I know and trust and it sounds like an awesome performer.
      I wouldn’t hesitate buying a SB3000, just seems like a very good Subwoofer, backed by a great company with great customer service and a great warranty.
      This Sunfire is no slouch, I can assure you that, but I love the peace of mind that buying new comes with, especially when it comes to subwoofers, which seem prone to more failures.
      I say get it, just let me know what you think when you do!

      The SVS lacks depth, is slow, one note sounding and under powered. This Sunfire is one of the subs that compete with my Velodyne DD12 in speed and punch. SVS's are overrated, pretty much any Sunfire or Velodyne is going to outperform them in speed and grip, even the sb16. Just take a look at the surrounds of SVS's, they're tiny, there's little to do there, it's basic physics

      Sunfire made the best compact subs at the time, but they are around 25 years old now. Some are newer than that and some are older. The problem is the amps are now prone to failure.
      $350 is a great deal for that sub, if it’s fully functional. I’d definitely test it out and be prepared to have the amp serviced.

      Yes, this sold a while back. The equipment is selling pretty rapidly, here locally, once the videos go live.

      @@blazermdx hi I bought hsr 10 how do I connect it to my receiver ? I have one single subwoofer cable where do I plug it in in red or white ???

    • @blazermdx
      @blazermdx  3 роки тому

      @@yannolove1335 If the version of the HRS-10 doesn’t have an LFE input, you should order a Y splitter off Amazon.
      You can connect the cable to either the L or R input on the sub to get you by, until the spitter comes in. You might not even notice a difference adding the Y-Splitter but it’s so cheap, I would try it both ways.

    I like your reviews but why do you put a sticker on the cones. That is very distracting and I think about it leaving a mark when removed which drives me crazy.

    • @midlander3760
      @midlander3760 3 роки тому

      Sorry, I heard you explain why you do that but I don't think it is needed. The excursion of the subs is easily viewable so I wouldn't do to remove any risk of damaging the cone upon removal.

    • @blazermdx
      @blazermdx  3 роки тому

      Yeah, I sometimes put a sticker on the cone to give some contrast, in hopes of showing the excursion a little better. The stickers just peel right off, as I only put them on briefly for the video.
      I haven’t used the stickers the last couple videos though. Some people comment that they like them and others comment that they don’t. What to do? Haha
      Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it!

    an $1100 sub is hardly entry level
    I just bought the Audioengine S8 Sub for $500 here in Canada so $350 American but your Sunfire sub would eat my 8" Audioengine sub for breakfast and i'm impressed by the volume and sound of my sub

    • @blazermdx
      @blazermdx  4 роки тому

      Yeah, I definitely don’t consider this an entry subwoofer. It is really a top performer, with size taken into consideration.
      Congratulations on the AudioEngine sub! I’m really impressed with AudioEngine and their quality. In fact, I just picked up a pair of Bamboo A5+ bookshelf speakers for my boss. He loves them.

    Good videos. You asked for constructive criticism. I could do without the "demo" part of the video. There are so many variables between you recording a sound in your room and us listening to it on our phone or computer that it's basically useless. Rather, instead of your "talking head" style videos, I would like to see some "artsy" shots (slow mo) of the product under review and some excursion shots, while you talk over them. Does that make sense? I just prefer not to just watch a dude sitting in front of the camera for 10 minutes talking. Lol. Peace.

    • @blazermdx
      @blazermdx  3 роки тому

      I totally get that perspective and appreciate the feedback!
      Unfortunately, with my limited editing skills, at least for the time being, I’m limited in how artsy I can make my videos appear.
      I only show the speakers and subwoofers playing, so viewers don’t have to just sit and watch me ramble, like I tend to do. I also state in many of my videos aren’t a good way to judge a speakers sound, too many variables involved.
      The good news is that there are so many reviewers out there that have much better editing skills and who are more precise with their economy of words, so everyone has options.
      My style definitely isn’t for everyone, I totally get it. Thanks again for the feedback, I really do appreciate constructive criticism!
