According to John Schneider, most of the engine sounds used in the shows were the ones from the Charger in Bullitt. That's why you often hear manual transmission shifts while the cars used in the show had automatic transmissions. Doesn't change the fact it sounds great.
I am 38 years old....I STILL LOOOOOVE THE GENERAL LEE! 30 years ago, I would prop in front of the TV with my little AFRO and watch the General Lee Friday every night! I'm a TEXAS boy!
@@timsgta He’s old enough to have watched it in first run. He’s a year or two older than me and watching the Duke boys in new episodes on Friday nights was a huge part of my childhood
Watched the Dukes every Friday night. Even had a go cart that I would fish tail like the General Lee, broke the chain doing so. Took me hours to find a replacement. I'm 51 now.
I’m 50, my favorite show of all time. Friday night after bath time lol. As a kid, it didn’t matter if I was on my go-kart, dirt bike, bmx, or playing Hot Wheels in the dirt - I was Luke Duke and my ride (or Hot Wheels) was the General Lee! Man, I must have made the General’s horn sound 10,000,000 times as a kid. Best TV show ever!
It's a shame that in the two Dukes of hazzard reunion movies that were made, they didn't record the old and original sound of the General Lee, that would have been really nostalgic to hear the old original sound of the General Lee. :)
I remember years ago seeing some old behind the scenes footage and you could tell the difference in sound, the cars in close up shots and used for high speed driving scenes had the proper big block, but the audio of the jump cars sounded like small block 383/318.
beleive it or not but the car did make its own noise every now and then. my freind has an original production car that was built to do the two wheeled stunts. and it has thrush glasspacks and headers, that were put on by the production crew. its the sweetest sound ever
Can I get this on a loop to sleep to? Glass pack relaxation. I knew most productions are dubbed and accepted Dukes as such, yet I was heartbroken when I discovered the sound for another indestructible Mopar, "Christine", was actually the big block Mustang owned by the actor who played the bully in that movie.
The car sounds exactly like my 70 Plymouth Fury 1 440 police car sounded, with Cherry Bombs on it. Just like any Mopar did back then, 340, 383, 400, 440. Mopar music.
I had a 71 Charger fitted with 73 360 engine and a straight pipe racing muffler. EVERYONE loved the sound of that! Everyone I turned up at my mother's place she always had a hot drink ready for me as she could hear me coming from miles away!
Nothing like the sound of a 440 with glass packs. My 70 Fury1 440 Tenn state trooper car sounded just like it. As a 17 year old I rat raced the hell out of mine in Bethesda Md and then Tuscaloosa Al. I wish I'd never sold that black monster.
Yup, owned many a charger over the years, that’s the sound of a 440…SWEET. And they used the engine sounds from the movie Bullitt , which that charger had a 440 in it…
The Doors were welded shut by the dukes ever since the beginning of the series. It made it similar to a racecar. Also, the "GENERAL LEE" text graphics are located above the windows, similar to how NASCAR drivers write their names over the windows of their racecars.
@iplayveryloud Amen to that! Never been a real enthousiast of muscle cars (liked them though) but after watching and especially, hearing that Challenger, fell in love with it!
Unfortunately no one watching the show knows what the charger actually sounds like because the sound department at Warner Bros used the soundtrack from the movie "Bullit" for the General Lee. They had 318's, 383's and a couple of 440 engines, each one sounding a little different.
I have been a Dukes fan from the beginning, never missed an episode Friday nights at 8:00.Love the sound of the General but not all of them had big blocks in them.If you listen carefully you can hear the difference, the higher revving ones are small blocks.I like the video by the way.
I wish I was born in this era or a little before it. EVERY car that had an 8 cylinder (which of course was most of them) sounded like this..nowadays it's something rare.
i feel sorry for you young kids today that dont know the good old fun in tearing it up down a gravel rd with a V8 under the hood. be it a chev dodge or a ford. cracking the 4 barrels open. i miss them days :)

That is correct
lĺ
Wow, they chose an amazing car to use for sounds... *Especially from an amazing movie with a perfect chase*
And tire squealing on dirt
In the Georgia episodes it's prominent, but after that you don't hear it much.
Damn I miss that show , just good ole country boys fighting the system

Too bad you had to watch reruns in 1990, but hey I'm glad you enjoyed it as a kid.

One of the best sounding cars ever....
Blackjack brand headers.... dual exhaust with thrush glasspacks

51-58 seconds ........puuuuure heaven to my ears
The 1969 dodge chager sound was an awesome sound back then, long live the Dukes of Hazzard!
There's no mistaking the sound of the combination of headers and burned out Cherry Bomb glass-packs. I honestly always liked that sound.
Omg I would hear these sounds in my head when I was a kid riding my huffy bike. 😂

Turns Gas into noise ,tires into smoke and cousins into hero’s .
Most recognizable car in pop culture
I love it how the tires make a skweek sound at dirt XD
On packed dirt it’ll do that a little bit

I know. But, at least the new movie had it. But, realize when it came out, it was on street level. Meaning regular driveway, or blacktop.
I remember years ago seeing some old behind the scenes footage and you could tell the difference in sound, the cars in close up shots and used for high speed driving scenes had the proper big block, but the audio of the jump cars sounded like small block 383/318.
Not about to trash a big block on a jump
It's a very old video, but is so beauty❤
They had some great stunt drivers for this show.

What idiots disliked this video? Why are there people who just have to outright hate things regardless! This is awesome!
The ones who probably made the mistake of buying the new Charger 😂
They probably drive Prius

Marco Nesi in the 70’s several law enforcement stations used Dodge and Plymouth squad cars back then.

@@CameronsCars Cherry Bomb glass packs, I think the car had 2 1/4" exhaust pipes from the factory. Stock manifolds as well.

The coke bottle styling makes the sound fit it very well. They don't make them like they used to.

the original is a 69, and they show a 68, and ya I like the show two.

Darn them Duke boys!!

That scene was on a tarmac to gravel transition, still entirely possible that there could be enough tarmac under the dirt to make a screeching noise.

I like the car sounds of The General Lee from season 1 and the first half of season 2.
