The Ghost is also pretty good, in different ways, it takes more advantage of the Repulser lift tech of Star Wars because its originally a light freighter (really more of an independent trucking company type ship) so the advanced maneuvering features like on the Razor Crest would be out of place, she's converted into essentially a corvette, (smaller than a frigate, operates more independently than a gun boat) and does a really good job of providing a fighter screen even without the Phantom, and acting as a transport. the living spaces aren't huge, and while its internal primary cargo space isn't the biggest, it is versatile, in addition it has 2 standard docking ports, and a specialized docking bay for a small support craft, all of which can be used for loading and offloading additional cargo and personelle though doing so can eat into the crew space. What makes her so great is perhaps with a lighter armament, all these features make sense for a small cargo ship, an unarmed shuttle the size of the Phantom could very well be "street legal" in most of the Galaxy, saving the need to rent a speeder, and enabling easier to move crew about a fleet or a port/station without taking up limited docking space so long as the ship or station you're visiting has a hangar or is in atmosphere. Its a well rounded ship for what it was designed for and modified into.

@@347Jimmy The razor crest has a distinct similarity to a republic gunship from the clone wars. That makes sense, being that it was, in cannon a patrol craft for the clone troops, so it would be more long range than a gunship, with more amenities than a short range combat craft. Not unlike the difference between a C-130 cargo ship and an AC-130 gunship in US use. There are no toilets on the AC-130, no spare space, just guns and a lot of ammo. Serenity, in Firefly, was also always breaking down, needing repairs, spare parts, etc.
It wasn't just a good plot device to cause them to get into situations... it made the show more "real", too. For one thing, a lot of people can relate to having car problems.
Another thing was that they were worried about where their next meal was going to come from... another "relatable" problem.
Combine that with a few other things, and it is probably a LARGE part of why audiences got so invested into the show...

The toilet thing reminds me of something amusing that would also fit the "Abecederian" Shuttle video... In the German version of TIE Fighter or X-Wing, (translating back to English) the description mentioend about the Lambda shuttle that there was a rumour that the Empereror's personal shuttle craft had a toilet installed. That sounds... funny. Kinda sad that a big transport shutttle usually doesn't have a toilet, but did I really need to make a point that the Empire might have the privilege to go to the toilet where everyone else just holds it in?
But some time and many english lessons later, I read an english version of the description. There the Emperor's shuttle was rumoured to have a cloak - as in cloaking device. So the german translators kinda interpreted the "cloak" as in that British (based on medieval era or whatever) lavatories installed in cloakrooms, not the cloak from "advanced stealth technology"...

One thing I've always questioned about glass cockpits on space-going vessels is why the cockpit isn't nestled somewhere further into the ship to keep the pilot safer. Surely cameras already exist, so the designer can embed cameras into the body at different angles to provide a full spherical 3D view for the person(s) in the cockpit.
As an addition I forgot to mention, but should be awknowledged:
There is an ENORMOUS blindspot underneath nearly every ship because there is simply no visibility under the cockpit. Fix this, you ship-designers!

It has beds, a head, a cargo bay, loading ramp, a very rugged and spartan aesthetic, and the ship itself is designed to be as good a bang for your buck as you can get - basically a budget multirole gunship. @@christophergroenewald5847 lol yeah I know, I was referring to that exact arms master. I originally thought that's more due to doctrinal difference. Alliance relies on combined arms more than Cerberus which necessitates a larger staging area able to contain a larger number of men closer to where the action is, rather than Cerberus who seem to rely more on unconventional warfare and small but elite units, whose soldiers benefit more from being closer to where the planning is (CIC and Comms Center). But it could also be Bioware poking fun at their previous game (remember, they did the same joke with ME1 elevators).
I suppose the surprise inspection by that pompous human admiral in ME1 would be a good starting point to explain the major features of the ship. Been a while since I played, so I dont remember how different SR1 and SR2 is, but I'm sure some SR1 design features got transferred to SR2 too, like the bridge design.
Aside from questioning SR2's ability to reach escape velocity after landing on a planet (may be explained with ME's Eezo tech manipulating gravity), I'm guessing these will be listed as design sins:
      - cockpit being separated far from the CIC where the captain is. If ME has invisible wall tech (solid opaque materials that can turn into a window), this would be a sin, but otherwise understandable I guess. It's just weird.
      - crew quarters being so small considering the crew size running about Normandy. The size of the medbay feels like a more appropriate quarters size. No, cryo pods dont count as crew quarters.

@@ChemySh the outside universe explanation for why the armory was on the Combat Deck was player convenience. The player spends most of their time on the Combat Deck so it's easier for the player to change their load out there. Especially since there is a loading screen between floors.
The Normandy's mass effect drive uses mass effect fields to reduce the mass of the ship by several orders of magnitude, this allows it to break through the atmosphere. However in atmosphere, it relies primarily on it's wings for flight.
The Cockpit and Bridge being separate means that one can still function even if the other is lost. This was shown in Mass effect 2 when a hull breach completely destroyed the CIC but the pilot was still able to fly the ship.
As for the windows. That's actually an odd one. Apparently having windows on a starship drives up recruiting. In combat, sheets of armor can be lowered to cover windows and non-essential rooms containing windows are depressurized.
The Normandy SR1 had a very flawed interior, lacking a lot(most likely to do with the game's low budget), but the SR2 possesses 22 beds in the crew's quarters and 8 sleeping pods. It's stated in the Codex that on smaller ships, crew members "Hot bunk"(share beds) when one crewmember finishes their shift they wake up the other and swap. A single bunk could probably be shared by upto 4 crew members if necessary. Giving the Normandy a maximum crew capacity of 120 crew members while in actuality it only has half that and even less in ME3

All the things that made the Razor Crest so great is present in that ship. It's a lived in ship with a lot of understandable functionality. I love Star Wars for that reason. The main ships are always a character with a back story in the same vein as a lot of turn of the century adventure novels.
The only thing I never liked about KOTOR was that the game took place some 3000 years before the Clone Wars but everything was designed to look like it was from the Clone War era. However, it's still a cool ship and it'd make an interesting video if you aren't too familiar with it.

When I was in high school I gave serious consideration to applying to the Naval Academy, so I consider myself a little bit of a navy geek, but I had never heard that word before. The USN ditched the word in 1846, but Poe wrote that story in 1838, and in any event Poe would have grown up in a time when its usage was still known and probably would have still used it even if he had written that story after 1846.

I have been struggling to locate sufficent water on some worlds, would your cube making process possibly have a reverse button to undo the natural tendency to cube itself? Or would it likely just try to make my ships cube even smaller?

I have a few things to say about the engine placement that weren't mentioned in the video. For a ground attack aircraft like the A-10 warthog (or any combat aircraft expected to come under fire in general), having those large engines placed outside the airframe is usually a bad idea because it exposes the engines to incoming threats. However, the rest of the design of the warthog uses the placement to its favor. Because you know most of the threats are coming from below you (i.e. the ground) having the engines high up, in between the wing and the rear stabilizers, means they act as shields to protect the engine. It also means the engine exhaust is partially masked from the bottom and sides at a side on or 3/4 rear view, so portable heat seeking missiles which were a large problem couldn't lock onto it. It also has benefits such as maintenance, better control when flying on one engine etc. This brings me onto my point about the Razor Crest. That engine configuration would normally be bad for a small to mid size space ship that is expected to fight other spacecraft, the exposed engines would take damage easily. But in the case of the Razor Crest it has a few benefits. It means while on harsh terrain like a sand planet, dust and sand won't be sucked into the engines (another benefit for the warthog's engines). It also means vents from the turbine can point almost 360 degrees round the assembly, which would be much harder to do if the engine was inside the airframe. It gives the craft more cargo space and more space in general inside as no space is taken up by the massive engines, and I would say it's a semi decent reason as to why the craft has toilets and other amenities as it simply has enough space, so why not (this point is congruent to the craft being designed to operate as a standalone, like mentioned in the vid), and finally, only one engine can be destroyed by an incoming projectile because they are far apart. I've ran out of things to say, these reasons are purely speculative but seem to make sense from a design perspective.

Well, you remember the design we did for that massive freighter in Episode 2? I shrunk that down a bunch and otherwise kept everything bascially the same.
Hmm...actually, not a bad starting point. We can do better than that though. Let's move the engine bay to right behind the cockpit, to make it easier for the crew to fix. And make the cockpit bigger for visibility.
Cargo bay can stay the same and just shove a toilet or bed in the corner.

He can...just about...afford that. Just add enough guns that they can potentially fight back before escaping. Keeping the same engines means the ship can move in all directions very easily, even in atmosphere.
We'll just add some toughness and strength, to ensure it will stay alive long enough to become annoying to maintain.

@@SacredCowShipyards but only when narratively resonant, which is the highest quality armour, plot or otherwise, one can give to a fictional ship.

Sheesh, I don't know why I have to keep saying this, but.....
The T-65 X-Wing has 4 (FOUR) turbine LOOKING engines. The aren't turbines of course, but when the wings separate they are still intact.
The T-70 on the other hand does in fact split the engine in half when the wings open into combat configuration. Since they aren't actually turbines the art and production departments didn't think it would matter when they designed the T-70.
They are both atmo capable engines though, and as such do intake air for atmospheric flight. They just don't use spinning fan blades to do it.
As for the Razor Crest I think your appraisal is pretty damn good. I too loved that the ramp was on the port side. Even if it was an accident.
