I’ve got both the D500 and the Z6ii & I think your assessment is spot on! However, my D500 has been in for repair for a month now and I’ve been forced to use the Z6ii for everything. With a bit of perseverance, I’m getting good results with the Z for birds in flight. First thing is to give it an extra half to one second after you think the AF has locked on before shooting, this has upped my keeper rate a bit (using wide area). Keeper rate isn’t as good as the D500 but once it has locked on, it’s tack sharp.
I love the practical scenario breakdown. I bought the D850 last summer and was thinking at the time that the mirrorless systems were still too new. Lately I was feeling a little buyer’s remorse on the D850 but for my type of shooting , wildlife and birds , it’s actually just fine. I am not a professional photographer just a serious hobbyist 😉and I am a painter so I like to shoot my own reference shots. This video put into perspective what I was struggling with and provided sound practical advice ...thanks !

glad it was helpful. The Z6ii has a wonderful sensor, is much better for video and I use it exclusively for ducks (quiet shutter). That said, for raptors, Birds in flight, and songbirds, I am still using the D500.
I use the original Z6 and I love it, there are two things you can do that really improve autofocus for birds in flight, turn off the low light autofocus option, custom settings menu, autofocus a11, and turn off the LCD screen using the button on the left side of the eyecup so you are just using the EVF, the camera then automatically diverts the extra processing power to autofocus, i was pleasantly surprised at the improvement when i was first told.
I shoot with my D850 and I have done AF fine-tune calibration on all my lenses. I find that my normal AF function is generally very good but many times the Live View touch focusing is even better. Thanks for your in-depth analysis of the Z6ii vs the D850.
I’m shooting songbirds, shore birds, and other wildlife with a D850 and Z 7II. I’ve spent many outings w/the Z body being frustrated and missing shots that the D850 would have nailed, especially w/smaller birds in cover. I have actually forced myself to leave the D850 behind to find ways to make the Z perform better - and I’ve learned A LOT! I still feel more confident with the D850, but the Z has a lot to offer too.
that is a killer combo, shame we feel the need to have 2 bodies, but most really serious photographers own 2 bodies (1 + a "backup"). It's not the cheapest proposition in the world, but it's also not a cheap hobby. lol Good luck with it!
I love your analysis. The one thing we can be sure of is that technology is eventually going to get us decent bird in flight AF on the Z cameras. I'm just staying put until that day arrives.
For skittish critters, like coyotes, foxes, and deer the silent shutter on the Z bodies is gold. The AF on both Gen 1 and 2 Z bodies is plenty good enough for most land animals. For fast moving animals, or anything that quickly goes from static to running/flying, the ability of the D850 and D500 to switch from single point to group or other mode is a tremendous advantage over the Z bodies where you have to, at best, use a combination of a custom button + subcommand dial to switch AF modes. The expected Z8 and Z9 bodies should be ideal for wildlife, incorporating the best of both worlds.
Good stuff to know Scott. Always prefer the in field comps versus test tube crap. I shoot the D850 as well and am totally satisfied with it. Yes close range shutter noise can be an issue. I do use the right angle finder occasionally. It took some getting used to but I am pretty adept with it now. When Nikon mirrorless gets a little better, which it will then I will ad a Z body.
Nice and forthright. I’m right in the middle - and not because I’m a wildlife photographer but because what I do shoot (rowing which is panning people at a distance) - but also family shots where my D850 video is so poor and eye autofocus will be great to have. Z6ii arriving tomorrow. Will keep D850. Also want Z glass.
Enjoyed the information, have been holding out hoping more people would jump on the mirrorless bandwagon so that more second hand equipment will show up on the used market at a great savings.
You have brought out some interesting points, I have been holding off on the mirrorless system and I am still not quite convinced to make the investment. I am shooting the D4, D500 and D850 with the 500mm PF and a 500mm f4 EFL. I shoot everything from birds in flight, song birds, shorebirds and ducks as well as lots of other critters. I can see where the silent shutter will be an advantage and I don't shoot any video. The focusing with the Z series is what has held me back so far and I think I am going to wait a little longer to spend that much money. Your video has me thinking and being a Nikon guy I am not willing to make a brand change. I think Nikon will very soon be there with the competition. Nikon seems to be where it is at for APS-C DSLRs. As a Canon DSLR shooter looking to upgrade from a Rebel T2i, it is disheartening to see Nikon trash Canons offering in every way.
May I ask if you are pleased with the 500 prime pf for birds in flight ... are the photos sharp ? Is it a struggle with in flight versus static subjects ? Thanks in advance for your advice . I own the pf , I’ve resorted to using sport mode for VR ..! Thoughts?
I love the 500 PF, it is quick to focus and the images are very sharp. It is almost always on my d500 because the crop factor gives me a little more reach and I don't find the 500 PF works all that well with a teleconverter

Great review. My experience with photographing birds using the D850/Z6 parallels yours. DSLRs for raptors/birds in flight and mirrorless for any other bird photography. I feel like I have slightly different technique too, when switching from a mirrorless to a DSLR. What you said about being able to get low with the mirrorless is spot on. I use that technique alot. I have gotten some bird keepers with my Z6, but it's hard work and can be frustrating because often, the Z6 will drop focus or simply not keep up with fast moving animals in general. I hope the tracking system in the Z9 is on par with Sony and Canon, and that the same technology trickles down into a more affordable Nikon Z body that is sports/action/wildlife focused.
This video pretty much helped me confirm what I want to do. I am currently shooting with a D750 (not a very good camera for birds), but I am looking to get a used D850 and then pick up a Z6II to use for video and then in situations where mirrorless will have an advantage (like the situations you touched on). My biggest debate was between the Z6II and the Z7II, but I am leaning more towards the Z6II for better video and low light performance. I also want to swap out my 200-500mm lens for a 500mm F4.
Well thought out and presented as always. Alas, I'm stuck with a D7100 with its slow and easily confused AF, slow FPS, and Crop- sensor....and of course, don't look.....Kit lenses..nuff said COSCO door buster many years ago...Probably all I really need but frustrating none the less...Keep putting in the effort, it shows, it really does...
The 7100 is still a fine sensor but the buffer is awful! To me the most important thing is enjoying the process and having the reason to get out. The gear and editing and all this is certainly a big factor to those heavily invested, but the process to me always is most important. Enjoy where the camera takes you!
Nicely reasoned. I'm a retired press photographer trying my hand at bird photography. I do shoot mirrorless and find it's possible but the stutter effect, or EVF lag, makes it difficult to photograph birds with more than short burst before the lag makes it hard to keep them in the frame. From what I've read (and seen on You Tube) it seems only the Canon R5 and Sony A9(2) appear to have managed to beat this problem so far.
the newest pro mirrorless will have this option as well, currently I believe this can only be achieved with "stacked" sensors which the Z6/7 do not have.

Personaly I shoot birds photography with the amazing Nikon D500. Alot faster than the D850, crop factor advantage, buffer up to 200 shots, incredible sharpness . My best bird pictures has been taken with a D500. I also own two D800 but mostly use for landscape. Don't have any interest for a mirrorrless system.
the D500 is an amazing body no argument. BUT the 850 is more versatile since you can crop down to D500 resolution with no penalty. Each has advantages and disadvantages but both were legendary

Agree with you...for bird photography, DSLR has faster focus system. My old D780 performed better than my Z7ii even after firmware update for Z7ii system.
Great video. I use the D500 and rely heavily on group autofocus. From all that I have read and watched, the Z bodies don’t have an equivalent mode which prioritizes nearest object under focus points. Waiting for a killer AF Z camera...
Interesting video - I have subscribed! I agree entirely with your comments, although I have actually decided to sell my 850 whilst I can get a decent price for it and go all in with my Z6II and really get used to it. Nobody would argue that for BIF the Z6II could track/follow etc as well as the 850, it won’t, but I have found that it is now good enough for me with the latest firmware - I gave it a good workout with my 300PF with fast, erratic Black Headed Gulls and was very happy with the keepers. I feel we are at that intermediate stage where Nikon ‘aren’t quite there’ yet - but I think they soon will be - they have to be!! I certainly won’t be chasing other brands. Thanks again.
Agreed! My d850 was totalled so I am NOT replacing it yet. Using the d500 for BIF which is a great combo. I miss the 850 pixels at times but for now, best to wait and see what next gen looks like.
First time here, and cannot agree more with you, I shoot birds and ducks a lot and would like to get more flying birds on focus. I recently sold my D750 and already regretting it because kept the Z6. My dream situation was exactly what you described, to have the Z6II + D850 (after selling also the Z6) , right now on hold mode waiting to see if Z7II, which understand has D850 sensor, gets a firmware upgrade for a substantial AF improve, will see. Scott my first time here! Gr8 video. I shoot sports in UK with have D5, D4s and also D810 for other stuff. My longest glass is 400f2.8. I've tried the Z6 and Z62 and agree that ML bodies are not there yet! However, the Z lenses are awesome i.e. 70-200! My 300mm pf with FTZ adapter worked great with Z bodies. Looking forward to Z9 but wonder how long that will take to hit the shelves in meaningful quantities?
Great video - shame it is primarily for Nikon - would be great if you could get bird photographers on for Sony and Canon to discuss dSLR versus Mirrorless or just to discuss the pros and cons for those systems in shooting your 4 different categories of bird photography.
unfortunately I just dont have the gear to give a legitimate comparison. Nikon is what I know and own, but the concepts on perspective and electronic shutter would carry over to any system. The big difference is AF accuracy and speed and I cant speak to that.
I wish the Z6 was APS-C, I've gotten used to being able to crop the images and don't want to give that up, I'd also like the extra reach. The Z7 seems less able for BiF than the Z6
I moved to the Z's last year (started with Z50, Z6 now I have the Z6ii, LOVE it). 2 F lenses remaining, the rest is Z glass (which is magically sharp). Have you experimented with Auto Area AF for BIF? Big improvement over the original Z models. My recommendations: I don't use Subject Tracking for faster action - Dynamic Area, Auto Area, but especially - Wide Small (my favorite for action). I love Subject Tracking for almost everything else - Eye AF for people (and sometimes animals, depending on coat / color) is amazing, way more keepers than the original models. Thanks for the vid!
thanks craig! Ive tried a few modes but it just doesn't seem to grab the way the d500/d850 do. I will try more and continue to experiment. I'll try more with dynamic area and see if the results are better. I haven't tried the Z glass as all yet, but thinking about a 70-200 since my F mount just got scrapped.
First time here. Love your direct hands on approach. I am a D500, 500PF shooter. Mostly birds, but go for the elk during the rut. I am looking at mirrorless for the live view, better focus accuracy, no blackout tracking and easier video. Nikon doesn't seem to have it yet and to get the reach and image quality from Canon or Sony, I would need to make a $20k investment. I am thinking of supplementing my D500 with either a Z7i or Z6ii. Z7i for higher resolution, but the Z6ii for lower light, video and the potential for better updates in the future. Do you see much difference in low light and video quality between the Z7 and Z6? Do you think the Zii cameras have the potential to be updated to no blackout trackers like the Cannon and Sony cameras?
to my understanding the sensors on these can not be set up for true "no blackout" the gen ii bodies don't have a low light advantage to my knowledge as the sensor is the same. They just added a second card slot, and second processor which in theory helps the autofocus and overall speed. the D500 is essentially a "high megapixel" camera just cropped. If you print BIG then the z7ii makes sense but if you want better low light, go Z6ii.
Oh my friend. I have a D500, D4, and D750 and mostly shoot shore birds, mammals and just started to shoot bird on flight. Would you recommend keeping the Nikon D500 and getting a Nikon Z6II? I appreciate your honest advice and opinion. Thanks in advance for the help and support
D500 for BIF D750 or D4 for low light. I would hold off on the Z6ii for birds to be honest. Its a nice body but the autofocus might not be what you are used to. IF you do anything that needs a silent shutter OR you do low angle, then the mirrorless bodies have big advantages.
I've had most of the Nikon DSLR bodies since the D100. I'm currently down to the D850, D500 with the Z7II. I find it very difficult going from mirrorless back to DSLR. For me, the only advantage to the Z9 is sticky tracking but that's my job as the photographer, right:))
i will say the "sticky" comes in handy to quickly recompose birds in camera. See the short video I did on songbirds. As you gear doesnt make you a good photographer but it can enhance the number of good photos you can achieve.

For those reading and might know me from other platforms, I'm no longer selling images, it's just fun stuff for me now. I'm probably going to backdown and reorder the Z9. I have the Z7II that will replace my D850 and the Z9 to replace the D500. It looks like next year before I see my copy...
If you need a silent shutter (close work and ducks) or a flip screen that actually tracks subject (bad neck , weird angles) than it could be worth it. Subject acquisition is better with DSLR, tracking is better with Mirrorless. If you have a pile of cash, get it but image quality is negligible to the naked eye.
Much less of an issue for me with portraits for example with ducks I don't find it to be that awful, with movement, it is a bigger issue (another reason I prefer dslr for BIF for now). It exists for sure with Z6/7 series but stacked sensors of the upcoming Z9 should eliminate that. Just be ready to take out a small loan for it.
Yes, EVF lag was my biggest issue with micro43 and one of reasons why the D500 felt like greased lightening when I first used it. After 4 years with this camera I still appreciate it.

I got a Z6II and a Z 50mm. I'm thinking about trading it for a relatively new D500, should I? Would it be too much of a downgrade? The Z6II is great but Z glass is too expensive and carrying it around has me always worried because it's too expensive. I know there's the ftz but that's an additional investment. I already have a 70-300 DX laying around
tough call. I think you can use the Z6ii really depends on what you need. The D500 is still a great body. Z6ii has the quiet shutter and great in low light.

Lol. I set it up flipped to record web cam voice shows so I'm looking the correct direction. But I'll try to remember to reverse this next time. Just pretend your looking in the mirror. I didn't realize I mentioned right or left in the video. Usually people notice it when the words are backwards
Z6 II autofocus is a big disappointment to me. It struggle so much to find little birds even when they don't move... Very sad to see that Nikon Z are so far away from Canon and Sony and even so far from Nikon DSLR!!!!!
I have moved from d500 to z6ii the autofocus is so bad I’m gonna sell all my Nikon gear and move to another brand. They had a chance to sort it out with a firmware update and they did nothing
im sitting tight for the next generation to see. I'm still happy with my d850 for 80% of what I do! Good luck, let us know if you make the move and what your experience is.
I've just changed to Nikon from Pentax, I got the Z6ii I updated the software before I started using It, ive only used it a few days with a 200-500mm f5.6 Nikon zoom(borrow from the wife). I've used it in the local woods and nature reserves . Currently Iam finding the auto focus very good compared to my previous Pentax DSLRs and also the video is very nice. I've used several of the focus modes not decided which is best so I've set 2 user profiles up with different focud modes to try out quickly under different conditions and subject.
good point about setting up profiles, you can also assign buttons to various focus modes, though I find the DSLRs gave me a couple nice options that the Z6ii didn't, like assigning group focus to a front button.
@@WildlifeInspired I've got animal tracking/ eye mode then then fn1 to single area tracking currently one of my go to user mode seams ok . But the single point focus seams to over ride all others which is a shame may be a software update down the line?
Nikon D850 rules for Wildlife. Or the D500. The Zx II simply sucks, they are useless for fast moving subjects. Nikon is with mirrorless at least 1.5 generations behind Sony and Canon. Simply terrible.
i can only speak to the bodies I have used. I shot a 750 for a short time and don't remember a silent shutter. We aren't talking about "quiet" mode which on most dslrs is not silent. I'll look into this. If you use live view, you are engaging the electronic shutter which yes would be silent , but it gets back to live view (contrast focusing) with Nikon and how poor it is on the dslr bodies I've used..
@@WildlifeInspired D780 is a hybrid 'live' gives it silent shutter like a Mirrorless. I also use Fuji Mirrorless also has the same silent shutter like Nikon Mirrorless. Thank you for quick answer. S

I just got a z9, so I am using the z6ii much less (mostly as a high end web cam) I will say the Z6ii has a wonderful sensor especially in low light. Much better low light performance over the d850 and Z9
I have a Nikon D850 and a Nikon d500 and was thinking of trading in both and going for sony a9ii or sony a74 and im also thinking of keeping my d850 and trading the d500 for a Nikon Z6ii . what do you think on this ?
it's such a tough call. personally I'd wait for this next generation of Nikon if you are heavily invested in glass. DSLR has some advantages but the world is going mirrorless

Same here! If they give me a high megapixel (40+) body that alllow me decent autofocus with a flip screen (silent) and their phase detect system hybrid, so you get the best of both worlds... Im in.
Wow, just found you and subbed. I am in the same dilemma, I have D500 and Z6 Mark l. I am trying to decide what to do, if Z6 ll would be worthwhile or just continue to shoot D 500 or switch systems which I don’t really want to do.
Choice is actually pretty easy. No concerns about using teleconverters, no degradation of AF performance regardless of base aperture, no focusing alignment issues and above all a gazillion times better high ISO performance. *DSLRs* Old and Busted, *Mirrorless* New Hotness.
When you realise you should have bought a Sony A9ii or a Canon R6 (for example), which both destroy ALL Nikons DSLR's or DSLM's in pretty much every discipline of wildlife shooting. Only mentioning this because this video here is only relevant if you are a Nikon shooter - then I would definitely prefer to have the D500, D5/D6 or D850 with me. But if you're into Sony or Canon, they both a exceptionally great wildlife DSLM's on the market (R5, R6, A9, A9ii or A1).
Thanks for the video .... I purchased the Z6 for its video (use in DX mode for video .. FX mode is no better) and astrophotgraphy .... I prefer the D500 for wildlife as I can quickly change the focus mode using the Fn 1 1nd Fn2 buttons (cant do quick chages on the Z series). ISO is sligfhtly noiser on the D500 but better than the Z6 with the 200-500 plus the 1.4TC to get the same range.
For the advantages of DSLR (shooting using an optical viewfinder and quick focus for birds in flight) and the advantages you mention of a mirrorless (silent shutter and a touchscreen LiveView that allows you to get down very close to the ground/water level), then a D780 is ideal. It is effectively a D750 with some improvements especially in terms of low light when used as a DSLR. When using LiveView, it is a Z6, with electronic (silent) shutter and good video capabilities. The only unfortunate thing is that Nikon has not provided any firmware updates of any significance since it was released in January 2020. Until or unless they do so, it does not have the Auto Focus updates that were provided with firmware updates released last year for the Z6 and Z7. But it is still a very high quality camera which provides some improvements to both the D850 and the D750, especially in terms of its hybrid capabilities -- which resolve ALL of the problems that you refer using the touchscreen on the D850 and D500.
good call out! The 700 series was never a wildlife body for a few reasons, poor buffer and slow frame rate. I rented one a few years back (d750) to test low light performance and found it impossible for wildlife. But the d780 has improved frame rate but lacks the autofocus of the d500/850 (on paper at least) electronic shutter at 12 frames makes up for some of that. Will be interesting to see the next generation. Great thought
@@WildlifeInspired Yes, I don't think that the D780 matches either the D500 or D850 for autofocus, based on what I have read. But certainly for people who are reluctant to switch entirely to mirrorless, it fills a void. Again, I really do wish that Nikon would come through with a firmware update that will bring the mirrorless component of the camera up to the level of the Z6 with its firmware updates. Sadly, I think that Nikon has decided to leave DSLR enthusiasts on the sidelines in favour of putting their energy into mirrorless. This is understandable in many ways. However, I find it hard to believe that it would require so many of their resources to create the update, and I think that it would help to make the D780 more attractive for a significant part of their market.
Excellent video , as a DSLR user that has been itching and thinking of getting the Z6ii this gave me some good insight. I love my D500 , amazing AF system as you noted , I also use my D610 for birds I can get closer too , love that sensor. I love the extra reach with the D500 and hope Nikon comes out with a Z equivalent ( not the Z50).
Great points. The flip screen (and mine doesn’t) in combination with touch point focus for me is the game changer. But alas, it willl be a while before I even make that change

Excellent video. I have D500, Z6 and Z50 and birds in flight is always the D500 (as well as sports), I also shoot Group, but I shoot anywhere from f8 to f11 to help if my focus is slightly off. For birds around the yard it's the Z50. Similar auto focus problems as Z6 but I like the reach. I also shoot f8 to f11 with songbirds. Most of my good songbirds in flight come from a perch near the feeder at the same distance as the feeder with a wide DOF. That straight line to feeder flight has given me many nice in focus shots. Keep up the great videos.
Stick with DSLR after 40 years and many camera systems Nikon mainly I have called it a day with photography. To much about the gear and not about images. Thanks for your video.

Thank you, very good video! silent shutter, undoubtedly, this is a great advantage! But the flip-screen can be replaced with an angle attachment for the viewfinder (Nikon DR5) I didn't wait for your video and bought a Nikon D5 last week (I chose between it, d850 and Z6II) - the image quality at high ICOs (I couldn't even imagine that I would like ICO6400) and the speed and quality of autofocus allow me to hope that I made the right choice By the way, the shutter noise of the D5 seemed quieter to me than that of the D7200 / D500 / D4 / D3s. I also like to shoot by the water - I will still wrap my body in a knitted scarf to reduce noise
a great body for sure the d5! I will say I have used the right angle attachments and they serve the point, but the articulating screens are amazing for versatility. Check my IG account @skeysimages and check out the 2 Wood Ducks I posted. These shots had me like a foot away from the screen at times but still able to focus and track. Would not have been possible with a fixed screen or even a right angle adapter.
Where did you find a left handed camera? Your video must have gotten flipped some how. Have you done a video on just the Z 6 II for birds and wildlife?
I dont do much video, I use the Z6ii as my web cam and to make YT videos and I love it. And yes, I use a mirror image set up for my live shows and just forgot to un flip it. Amazing that it never stood out to me but Ive gotten many comments on it now and will try to remember to fix it next time.
Great, honest Video. I made the same experience switching from my D500 to the Z6 II. Love the D500 for the fast AF in action scenarios. But for portraiture style wildlife photography and video the Z6 II is the better choice, specially in low light conditions.
This was a great watch. Unfortunately you’re suggestion of buy both doesn’t apply to me! I’m looking to make the step up and upgrade my D3200 and I cannot decide what to do - it’s a big move for me. The D850 is a wonderful camera but I’m afraid of investing in a system that looks like it is going to be left behind? That’s making me look to the Z7ii but I’m not convinced by focusing for birds in flight. I like to shoot all sorts of birds both low and in the sky, which makes this choice even trickier. I'm real happy with my D780! It is a DSLR, but it seems to have some of the best features of both worlds...including silent Live View Mode! It seems to do well in low light and even at higher ISO's I have usable files. I'm a former professional studio portrait photographer who has been shooting Nikon for about 10 years now, but am getting into wildlife and bird photography.
Your full of it, the 850 will beat any mirrorless on build quality hands down. Fact not opinion. btw, the 850 has a silent mode thats completely silent...you need to go back and read the manual
Who are you addressing. Because when did I state that mirrorless was better. Silent mode on many dslr is not silent and live view is horrible with most. However. I'll still take a d850 over any mirrorless body that Nikon makes

Own a D500 & a D850 for birding; Tbh, the 850 sux for birding; Nikon mirrorless are way behind the eight ball. By the time Nikon bring out a D500 mirrorless, Canon & Sony will always have something better. Even now with any of the new Alpha`, & R5 & R6, would shit all over Nikons two new offerings. I feel that I might have to change brands, & yes, over 20k of Nikon gear.
@@WildlifeInspired Something about the autofocus makes it less reliable for target acquisition. Just not as sticky as the 500; Also when I get a lock on focus, the image looks blurry in the viewfinder. My hit rate is lousy compared with the 500.
I’ve got both the D500 and the Z6ii & I think your assessment is spot on! However, my D500 has been in for repair for a month now and I’ve been forced to use the Z6ii for everything. With a bit of perseverance, I’m getting good results with the Z for birds in flight. First thing is to give it an extra half to one second after you think the AF has locked on before shooting, this has upped my keeper rate a bit (using wide area). Keeper rate isn’t as good as the D500 but once it has locked on, it’s tack sharp.

I love the practical scenario breakdown. I bought the D850 last summer and was thinking at the time that the mirrorless systems were still too new. Lately I was feeling a little buyer’s remorse on the D850 but for my type of shooting , wildlife and birds , it’s actually just fine. I am not a professional photographer just a serious hobbyist 😉and I am a painter so I like to shoot my own reference shots. This video put into perspective what I was struggling with and provided sound practical advice ...thanks !

glad it was helpful. The Z6ii has a wonderful sensor, is much better for video and I use it exclusively for ducks (quiet shutter). That said, for raptors, Birds in flight, and songbirds, I am still using the D500.

I use the original Z6 and I love it, there are two things you can do that really improve autofocus for birds in flight, turn off the low light autofocus option, custom settings menu, autofocus a11, and turn off the LCD screen using the button on the left side of the eyecup so you are just using the EVF, the camera then automatically diverts the extra processing power to autofocus, i was pleasantly surprised at the improvement when i was first told.
That's a great tip and thanks for sharing. Had not read that before. I will definitely try that and it if improves I will share publicly.
I shoot with my D850 and I have done AF fine-tune calibration on all my lenses. I find that my normal AF function is generally very good but many times the Live View touch focusing is even better. Thanks for your in-depth analysis of the Z6ii vs the D850.
I’m shooting songbirds, shore birds, and other wildlife with a D850 and Z 7II. I’ve spent many outings w/the Z body being frustrated and missing shots that the D850 would have nailed, especially w/smaller birds in cover. I have actually forced myself to leave the D850 behind to find ways to make the Z perform better - and I’ve learned A LOT! I still feel more confident with the D850, but the Z has a lot to offer too.

that is a killer combo, shame we feel the need to have 2 bodies, but most really serious photographers own 2 bodies (1 + a "backup"). It's not the cheapest proposition in the world, but it's also not a cheap hobby. lol Good luck with it!

For skittish critters, like coyotes, foxes, and deer the silent shutter on the Z bodies is gold. The AF on both Gen 1 and 2 Z bodies is plenty good enough for most land animals. For fast moving animals, or anything that quickly goes from static to running/flying, the ability of the D850 and D500 to switch from single point to group or other mode is a tremendous advantage over the Z bodies where you have to, at best, use a combination of a custom button + subcommand dial to switch AF modes. The expected Z8 and Z9 bodies should be ideal for wildlife, incorporating the best of both worlds.

Good stuff to know Scott. Always prefer the in field comps versus test tube crap. I shoot the D850 as well and am totally satisfied with it. Yes close range shutter noise can be an issue. I do use the right angle finder occasionally. It took some getting used to but I am pretty adept with it now. When Nikon mirrorless gets a little better, which it will then I will ad a Z body.
I was determined (and impatient) for better waterfowl opportunities. But anyone waiting to see what happens, I think that's also a smart move.
Nice and forthright. I’m right in the middle - and not because I’m a wildlife photographer but because what I do shoot (rowing which is panning people at a distance) - but also family shots where my D850 video is so poor and eye autofocus will be great to have. Z6ii arriving tomorrow. Will keep D850. Also want Z glass.

You have brought out some interesting points, I have been holding off on the mirrorless system and I am still not quite convinced to make the investment. I am shooting the D4, D500 and D850 with the 500mm PF and a 500mm f4 EFL. I shoot everything from birds in flight, song birds, shorebirds and ducks as well as lots of other critters. I can see where the silent shutter will be an advantage and I don't shoot any video. The focusing with the Z series is what has held me back so far and I think I am going to wait a little longer to spend that much money. Your video has me thinking and being a Nikon guy I am not willing to make a brand change. I think Nikon will very soon be there with the competition. If you were thinking about Canon , it would be clear if you could afford the switch. Sony=only choice. Nikon= not quite there yet.
Nikon seems to be where it is at for APS-C DSLRs. As a Canon DSLR shooter looking to upgrade from a Rebel T2i, it is disheartening to see Nikon trash Canons offering in every way.
May I ask if you are pleased with the 500 prime pf for birds in flight ... are the photos sharp ? Is it a struggle with in flight versus static subjects ? Thanks in advance for your advice . I own the pf , I’ve resorted to using sport mode for VR ..! Thoughts?
I love the 500 PF, it is quick to focus and the images are very sharp. It is almost always on my d500 because the crop factor gives me a little more reach and I don't find the 500 PF works all that well with a teleconverter

Great review. My experience with photographing birds using the D850/Z6 parallels yours. DSLRs for raptors/birds in flight and mirrorless for any other bird photography. I feel like I have slightly different technique too, when switching from a mirrorless to a DSLR. What you said about being able to get low with the mirrorless is spot on. I use that technique alot. I have gotten some bird keepers with my Z6, but it's hard work and can be frustrating because often, the Z6 will drop focus or simply not keep up with fast moving animals in general. I hope the tracking system in the Z9 is on par with Sony and Canon, and that the same technology trickles down into a more affordable Nikon Z body that is sports/action/wildlife focused.
This video pretty much helped me confirm what I want to do. I am currently shooting with a D750 (not a very good camera for birds), but I am looking to get a used D850 and then pick up a Z6II to use for video and then in situations where mirrorless will have an advantage (like the situations you touched on). My biggest debate was between the Z6II and the Z7II, but I am leaning more towards the Z6II for better video and low light performance. I also want to swap out my 200-500mm lens for a 500mm F4.

Alas, I'm stuck with a D7100 with its slow and easily confused AF, slow FPS, and Crop- sensor....and of course, don't look.....Kit lenses..nuff said COSCO door buster many years ago...Probably all I really need but frustrating none the less...Keep putting in the effort, it shows, it really does...
The 7100 is still a fine sensor but the buffer is awful! To me the most important thing is enjoying the process and having the reason to get out. The gear and editing and all this is certainly a big factor to those heavily invested, but the process to me always is most important. Enjoy where the camera takes you!

Nicely reasoned. I'm a retired press photographer trying my hand at bird photography. I do shoot mirrorless and find it's possible but the stutter effect, or EVF lag, makes it difficult to photograph birds with more than short burst before the lag makes it hard to keep them in the frame. From what I've read (and seen on You Tube) it seems only the Canon R5 and Sony A9(2) appear to have managed to beat this problem so far.
the newest pro mirrorless will have this option as well, currently I believe this can only be achieved with "stacked" sensors which the Z6/7 do not have.

the 850 is my favorite body and if I didnt shoot, ducks, I would not look at mirrorless for this generation of Nikons.
Personaly I shoot birds photography with the amazing Nikon D500. Alot faster than the D850, crop factor advantage, buffer up to 200 shots, incredible sharpness . My best bird pictures has been taken with a D500. I also own two D800 but mostly use for landscape. Don't have any interest for a mirrorrless system.
the D500 is an amazing body no argument. BUT the 850 is more versatile since you can crop down to D500 resolution with no penalty. Each has advantages and disadvantages but both were legendary

Agree with you...for bird photography, DSLR has faster focus system. My old D780 performed better than my Z7ii even after firmware update for Z7ii system.

Great video. I use the D500 and rely heavily on group autofocus. From all that I have read and watched, the Z bodies don’t have an equivalent mode which prioritizes nearest object under focus points. Waiting for a killer AF Z camera...
Interesting video - I have subscribed! I agree entirely with your comments, although I have actually decided to sell my 850 whilst I can get a decent price for it and go all in with my Z6II and really get used to it. Nobody would argue that for BIF the Z6II could track/follow etc as well as the 850, it won’t, but I have found that it is now good enough for me with the latest firmware - I gave it a good workout with my 300PF with fast, erratic Black Headed Gulls and was very happy with the keepers. I feel we are at that intermediate stage where Nikon ‘aren’t quite there’ yet - but I think they soon will be - they have to be!! I certainly won’t be chasing other brands. Thanks again.
Agreed! My d850 was totalled so I am NOT replacing it yet. Using the d500 for BIF which is a great combo. I miss the 850 pixels at times but for now, best to wait and see what next gen looks like.
First time here, and cannot agree more with you, I shoot birds and ducks a lot and would like to get more flying birds on focus. I recently sold my D750 and already regretting it because kept the Z6. My dream situation was exactly what you described, to have the Z6II + D850 (after selling also the Z6) , right now on hold mode waiting to see if Z7II, which understand has D850 sensor, gets a firmware upgrade for a substantial AF improve, will see. You can change sensitivity and speed for birds in flight and record settings in one of the ux modes for fast switch
Scott my first time here! Gr8 video. I shoot sports in UK with have D5, D4s and also D810 for other stuff. My longest glass is 400f2.8.
I've tried the Z6 and Z62 and agree that ML bodies are not there yet! However, the Z lenses are awesome i.e. 70-200! My 300mm pf with FTZ adapter worked great with Z bodies. Looking forward to Z9 but wonder how long that will take to hit the shelves in meaningful quantities?

Great video - shame it is primarily for Nikon - would be great if you could get bird photographers on for Sony and Canon to discuss dSLR versus Mirrorless or just to discuss the pros and cons for those systems in shooting your 4 different categories of bird photography.
unfortunately I just dont have the gear to give a legitimate comparison. Nikon is what I know and own, but the concepts on perspective and electronic shutter would carry over to any system. The big difference is AF accuracy and speed and I cant speak to that.
I wish the Z6 was APS-C, I've gotten used to being able to crop the images and don't want to give that up, I'd also like the extra reach. The Z7 seems less able for BiF than the Z6

I moved to the Z's last year (started with Z50, Z6 now I have the Z6ii, LOVE it). 2 F lenses remaining, the rest is Z glass (which is magically sharp). Have you experimented with Auto Area AF for BIF? Big improvement over the original Z models.
My recommendations: I don't use Subject Tracking for faster action - Dynamic Area, Auto Area, but especially - Wide Small (my favorite for action). I love Subject Tracking for almost everything else - Eye AF for people (and sometimes animals, depending on coat / color) is amazing, way more keepers than the original models.

thanks craig! Ive tried a few modes but it just doesn't seem to grab the way the d500/d850 do. I will try more and continue to experiment. I'll try more with dynamic area and see if the results are better. I haven't tried the Z glass as all yet, but thinking about a 70-200 since my F mount just got scrapped.
First time here. Love your direct hands on approach. I am a D500, 500PF shooter. Mostly birds, but go for the elk during the rut. I am looking at mirrorless for the live view, better focus accuracy, no blackout tracking and easier video. Nikon doesn't seem to have it yet and to get the reach and image quality from Canon or Sony, I would need to make a $20k investment. I am thinking of supplementing my D500 with either a Z7i or Z6ii. Z7i for higher resolution, but the Z6ii for lower light, video and the potential for better updates in the future. Do you see much difference in low light and video quality between the Z7 and Z6? Do you think the Zii cameras have the potential to be updated to no blackout trackers like the Cannon and Sony cameras?
to my understanding the sensors on these can not be set up for true "no blackout" the gen ii bodies don't have a low light advantage to my knowledge as the sensor is the same. They just added a second card slot, and second processor which in theory helps the autofocus and overall speed. the D500 is essentially a "high megapixel" camera just cropped. If you print BIG then the z7ii makes sense but if you want better low light, go Z6ii.

D500 for BIF D750 or D4 for low light. I would hold off on the Z6ii for birds to be honest. Its a nice body but the autofocus might not be what you are used to. IF you do anything that needs a silent shutter OR you do low angle, then the mirrorless bodies have big advantages.

I've had most of the Nikon DSLR bodies since the D100. I'm currently down to the D850, D500 with the Z7II. I find it very difficult going from mirrorless back to DSLR. For me, the only advantage to the Z9 is sticky tracking but that's my job as the photographer, right:))
i will say the "sticky" comes in handy to quickly recompose birds in camera. See the short video I did on songbirds. As you gear doesnt make you a good photographer but it can enhance the number of good photos you can achieve.

If you need a silent shutter (close work and ducks) or a flip screen that actually tracks subject (bad neck , weird angles) than it could be worth it. Subject acquisition is better with DSLR, tracking is better with Mirrorless. If you have a pile of cash, get it but image quality is negligible to the naked eye.

I haven't heard you mention anything about EVF lag? That was a real issue with early mirrorless cameras.
Much less of an issue for me with portraits for example with ducks I don't find it to be that awful, with movement, it is a bigger issue (another reason I prefer dslr for BIF for now). It exists for sure with Z6/7 series but stacked sensors of the upcoming Z9 should eliminate that. Just be ready to take out a small loan for it.
Yes, EVF lag was my biggest issue with micro43 and one of reasons why the D500 felt like greased lightening when I first used it. After 4 years with this camera I still appreciate it.

I got a Z6II and a Z 50mm. I'm thinking about trading it for a relatively new D500, should I? Would it be too much of a downgrade? The Z6II is great but Z glass is too expensive and carrying it around has me always worried because it's too expensive. I know there's the ftz but that's an additional investment. I already have a 70-300 DX laying around
tough call. I think you can use the Z6ii really depends on what you need. The D500 is still a great body. Z6ii has the quiet shutter and great in low light.

Z6 II autofocus is a big disappointment to me. It struggle so much to find little birds even when they don't move... Very sad to see that Nikon Z are so far away from Canon and Sony and even so far from Nikon DSLR!!!!!

I have moved from d500 to z6ii the autofocus is so bad I’m gonna sell all my Nikon gear and move to another brand. They had a chance to sort it out with a firmware update and they did nothing

I've just changed to Nikon from Pentax, I got the Z6ii I updated the software before I started using It, ive only used it a few days with a 200-500mm f5.6 Nikon zoom(borrow from the wife). I've used it in the local woods and nature reserves . Currently Iam finding the auto focus very good compared to my previous Pentax DSLRs and also the video is very nice.
I've used several of the focus modes not decided which is best so I've set 2 user profiles up with different focud modes to try out quickly under different conditions and subject.
good point about setting up profiles, you can also assign buttons to various focus modes, though I find the DSLRs gave me a couple nice options that the Z6ii didn't, like assigning group focus to a front button.
@@WildlifeInspired I've got animal tracking/ eye mode then then fn1 to single area tracking currently one of my go to user mode seams ok . But the single point focus seams to over ride all others which is a shame may be a software update down the line?
Nikon D850 rules for Wildlife. Or the D500. The Zx II simply sucks, they are useless for fast moving subjects. Nikon is with mirrorless at least 1.5 generations behind Sony and Canon. Simply terrible.

i can only speak to the bodies I have used. I shot a 750 for a short time and don't remember a silent shutter. We aren't talking about "quiet" mode which on most dslrs is not silent. I'll look into this. If you use live view, you are engaging the electronic shutter which yes would be silent , but it gets back to live view (contrast focusing) with Nikon and how poor it is on the dslr bodies I've used..

I just got a z9, so I am using the z6ii much less (mostly as a high end web cam) I will say the Z6ii has a wonderful sensor especially in low light. Much better low light performance over the d850 and Z9

it's such a tough call. personally I'd wait for this next generation of Nikon if you are heavily invested in glass. DSLR has some advantages but the world is going mirrorless

Same here! If they give me a high megapixel (40+) body that alllow me decent autofocus with a flip screen (silent) and their phase detect system hybrid, so you get the best of both worlds... Im in.

Wow, just found you and subbed. I am in the same dilemma, I have D500 and Z6 Mark l. I am trying to decide what to do, if Z6 ll would be worthwhile or just continue to shoot D 500 or switch systems which I don’t really want to do.
nikon shooters are in a bit of a conundrum at the moment. Perhaps a D500 equivalent mirrorless is on the way?
Choice is actually pretty easy. No concerns about using teleconverters, no degradation of AF performance regardless of base aperture, no focusing alignment issues and above all a gazillion times better high ISO performance. *DSLRs* Old and Busted, *Mirrorless* New Hotness.

There is no way a bird let you get 8 inches away from them.
I think i mentioned a remote trigger. It was not 8 inches from me. It was 8 inches from the lens.
When you realise you should have bought a Sony A9ii or a Canon R6 (for example), which both destroy ALL Nikons DSLR's or DSLM's in pretty much every discipline of wildlife shooting. Only mentioning this because this video here is only relevant if you are a Nikon shooter - then I would definitely prefer to have the D500, D5/D6 or D850 with me. But if you're into Sony or Canon, they both a exceptionally great wildlife DSLM's on the market (R5, R6, A9, A9ii or A1).
Does the D780 have the same low light sensor ? I am considering zakum to it d850 to add pixels or d500 to increase range.

Thanks for the video .... I purchased the Z6 for its video (use in DX mode for video .. FX mode is no better) and astrophotgraphy .... I prefer the D500 for wildlife as I can quickly change the focus mode using the Fn 1 1nd Fn2 buttons (cant do quick chages on the Z series). ISO is sligfhtly noiser on the D500 but better than the Z6 with the 200-500 plus the 1.4TC to get the same range.
For the advantages of DSLR (shooting using an optical viewfinder and quick focus for birds in flight) and the advantages you mention of a mirrorless (silent shutter and a touchscreen LiveView that allows you to get down very close to the ground/water level), then a D780 is ideal. It is effectively a D750 with some improvements especially in terms of low light when used as a DSLR. When using LiveView, it is a Z6, with electronic (silent) shutter and good video capabilities. The only unfortunate thing is that Nikon has not provided any firmware updates of any significance since it was released in January 2020. Until or unless they do so, it does not have the Auto Focus updates that were provided with firmware updates released last year for the Z6 and Z7. But it is still a very high quality camera which provides some improvements to both the D850 and the D750, especially in terms of its hybrid capabilities -- which resolve ALL of the problems that you refer using the touchscreen on the D850 and D500.
good call out! The 700 series was never a wildlife body for a few reasons, poor buffer and slow frame rate. I rented one a few years back (d750) to test low light performance and found it impossible for wildlife. But the d780 has improved frame rate but lacks the autofocus of the d500/850 (on paper at least) electronic shutter at 12 frames makes up for some of that.

@@WildlifeInspired Yes, I don't think that the D780 matches either the D500 or D850 for autofocus, based on what I have read. But certainly for people who are reluctant to switch entirely to mirrorless, it fills a void. Again, I really do wish that Nikon would come through with a firmware update that will bring the mirrorless component of the camera up to the level of the Z6 with its firmware updates. Sadly, I think that Nikon has decided to leave DSLR enthusiasts on the sidelines in favour of putting their energy into mirrorless. This is understandable in many ways. However, I find it hard to believe that it would require so many of their resources to create the update, and I think that it would help to make the D780 more attractive for a significant part of their market.
Excellent video , as a DSLR user that has been itching and thinking of getting the Z6ii this gave me some good insight. I love my D500 , amazing AF system as you noted , I also use my D610 for birds I can get closer too , love that sensor. I love the extra reach with the D500 and hope Nikon comes out with a Z equivalent ( not the Z50).
I'm seeing rumors of a crop mirrorless d500 equivalent. Will see soon.
Great points. The flip screen (and mine doesn’t) in combination with touch point focus for me is the game changer. But alas, it willl be a while before I even make that change

Excellent video. I have D500, Z6 and Z50 and birds in flight is always the D500 (as well as sports), I also shoot Group, but I shoot anywhere from f8 to f11 to help if my focus is slightly off. For birds around the yard it's the Z50. Similar auto focus problems as Z6 but I like the reach. I also shoot f8 to f11 with songbirds. Most of my good songbirds in flight come from a perch near the feeder at the same distance as the feeder with a wide DOF. That straight line to feeder flight has given me many nice in focus shots. Keep up the great videos.

silent shutter, undoubtedly, this is a great advantage! But the flip-screen can be replaced with an angle attachment for the viewfinder (Nikon DR5)
I didn't wait for your video and bought a Nikon D5 last week (I chose between it, d850 and Z6II) - the image quality at high ICOs (I couldn't even imagine that I would like ICO6400) and the speed and quality of autofocus allow me to hope that I made the right choice
By the way, the shutter noise of the D5 seemed quieter to me than that of the D7200 / D500 / D4 / D3s. I also like to shoot by the water - I will still wrap my body in a knitted scarf to reduce noise
a great body for sure the d5! I will say I have used the right angle attachments and they serve the point, but the articulating screens are amazing for versatility. Check my IG account @skeysimages and check out the 2 Wood Ducks I posted. These shots had me like a foot away from the screen at times but still able to focus and track. Would not have been possible with a fixed screen or even a right angle adapter.

Where did you find a left handed camera? Your video must have gotten flipped some how. Have you done a video on just the Z 6 II for birds and wildlife?
I dont do much video, I use the Z6ii as my web cam and to make YT videos and I love it. And yes, I use a mirror image set up for my live shows and just forgot to un flip it. Amazing that it never stood out to me but Ive gotten many comments on it now and will try to remember to fix it next time.

Great, honest Video. I made the same experience switching from my D500 to the Z6 II. Love the D500 for the fast AF in action scenarios. But for portraiture style wildlife photography and video the Z6 II is the better choice, specially in low light conditions.
Agree! If I shot mammals and lots of video, I think the switch to mirrorless would be a no brainer, and I'd get the glass to go with it.

This was a great watch. Unfortunately you’re suggestion of buy both doesn’t apply to me! I’m looking to make the step up and upgrade my D3200 and I cannot decide what to do - it’s a big move for me. The D850 is a wonderful camera but I’m afraid of investing in a system that looks like it is going to be left behind? That’s making me look to the Z7ii but I’m not convinced by focusing for birds in flight. I like to shoot all sorts of birds both low and in the sky, which makes this choice even trickier. I'm real happy with my D780! It is a DSLR, but it seems to have some of the best features of both worlds...including silent Live View Mode! It seems to do well in low light and even at higher ISO's I have usable files. I'm a former professional studio portrait photographer who has been shooting Nikon for about 10 years now, but am getting into wildlife and bird photography.

Your full of it, the 850 will beat any mirrorless on build quality hands down. Fact not opinion. btw, the 850 has a silent mode thats completely silent...you need to go back and read the manual
Who are you addressing. Because when did I state that mirrorless was better. Silent mode on many dslr is not silent and live view is horrible with most. However. I'll still take a d850 over any mirrorless body that Nikon makes

Own a D500 & a D850 for birding; Tbh, the 850 sux for birding;
Nikon mirrorless are way behind the eight ball.
By the time Nikon bring out a D500 mirrorless, Canon & Sony will always have something better. Even now with any of the new Alpha`, & R5 & R6, would shit all over Nikons two new offerings.
I feel that I might have to change brands, & yes, over 20k of Nikon gear.
curious why d850 sucks for birding? its essentially a d500 with more pixels. With a battery grip you only lose about 1fps.
@@WildlifeInspired Something about the autofocus makes it less reliable for target acquisition. Just not as sticky as the 500;
Also when I get a lock on focus, the image looks blurry in the viewfinder. My hit rate is lousy compared with the 500.
