Ductwork Issues In Crawl Space

- This video shows issues with ductwork in the crawl space of a customers house. She was needing her A/C checked and wanted me to look at the ductwork as well. Recommended replacing entire duct system or at least repairing and/ or replacing the ducts that are not insulated to provide a system that will run more efficiently.
at 2:30 you have water dripping, you said the purpose of the insulation is to contain water, not correct, the purpose of the insulation is to change the temperature for condensation so it does not happen.
The insulation is not there to catch the moisture that forms on the metal duct. It is there to insulate the duct so that it will NOT SWEAT.
I can't help but to think that fiberglass insulation (even in the plastic sleeves as shown) is ineffective in this application. Should there be ANY condensation on the inside of the sleeve, the fiberglass with simply saturate and have no insulation value whatsoever.
It will still sweat if the temperature in the crawl space is to warm
Condensation occurs when a surface is cooler than the surrounding damp air. Think glass filled with a cold beverage on a humid day.
Fuck that. I've insulated so many duct jobs in my 5 years as an HVAC tech I'll be glad if I never see another one.
What would this job cost?
It depends on the best solution for the customer.
My hats off to ya for even taking the job. lol
Thank you!!
THANK you
Hope to receive a reply. I have the same issue.. problem inside is air is running 24/7. Could this be the cause?..
Sounds like there is more going on than just the duct system.
Even if he i insulate Conversation with Still form on the installation so it could be A plethora of things
1940s raised cottage 1200 sq ft on concrete piers in south Louisiana, want to add central air & heat where there is none currently. Do you suggest attic or crawlspace mounted air handler?
Inside closet
If the attic is large enough to accomodate an entire duct system and air handler/ furnace, then I would put it in the attic. Air flows best in a downward direction.
Needs new insulation throughout the entire duct system.
That would be the most cost-effective solution for this particular customer.
where is the repair video?
We didn't get the job. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but she definitely needed to have her ductwork wrapped or replaced.
What was your estimate approx?
@@JiminyGlick-vj9tu Hi there... I am having a similar issue and Im certain I need to replace my insulation. I currently have the old style since my home was made in the 50's. What is the best type if insulation to use now? Thanks in advance.
@linop412
Here is a link with the current recommendations for insulation and moisture barrier in a crawl space. A moisture barrier is going to eliminate/reduce mold growth on the floor joists. If you haven't replaced the plastic under the house I would definitely take care of that when you replace the insulation. Both of these are DIY, but to ensure proper installation, a professional is always your best bet. I hope this helps with your question. www.todayshomeowner.com/how-to-insulate-a-crawl-space-under-your-home/
@@JiminyGlick-vj9tu Thank you so much for the reply. Its a huge help!
Boxes on furnaces is shitwork. First thing the air does is start building up pressure when it hits the dead end coming out of the furnace. I worked for a shop where they had a layout guy and we made our own custom fittings and ductwork. All our ducts had smooth curves to sweep the air vs having it hit a box. Gotta have the equipment and shop though. If you can't do it right though, don't fucking do it at all. That hvac system is shitwork. I'd rip it out and cut their bill in half by putting them in a real system. Round pipe trunkline would be 90 percent better than this shit.
jay willow yea but most people don’t want to pay to fix their ductwork. Are you going to do it for free???
Air out of ducts cause no insulation? Nah. Lot of liquid for sure....old ass ductwork never has tape on it I swear
The only time a duct system can go un-insulated would be in a controlled environment with other factors being considered. A crawlspace is definitely not a controlled environment.
