To those who have commented on Harlan being a horrible person, if I may : Read him, in a sentence he can nail you against the wall and the next simply break your heart with his humanity.

I and a friend interviewed HE for my college paper many distant moons ago with a tape recorder in hand, in his hotel room after giving a talk at PhilCon (sf convention in Philly.) A horrible person he is not. Very generous with his time and he dressed me down for some dopey thing i said, but i took no offense. Have the article saved of course but i wish i still had the recording. It does play in the theatre of my mind occassionally though.

His humor is to lovingly attack with cynicism and tongue biting in cheek perhaps. Moorcock wrote for Blue Oyster Cult, who I also love

    R.I.P. Harlan...

It's a sad butt true story that had to be told about this classic and now a science fiction cult icon of a film. * That I heard actually inspired the video game Fallout by the way. The realization of just that one line at the end of the film "was something of a different way to understand what the film was all about" I'm 56 and I seen this when it was at a drive-in theater the first year it was showing. I even caught rerun's of it on television over the year's from time to time. Thank you Harlan Ellison for detailing this masterpiece by bringing "The True Meaning" to our attention. R.I.P. Sir!

Am I the only one who thinks, when he goes into his "Lecture on Fear," schtick, he's channeling Brother Theodore?
I mean, crazy old-man hair, the voice, already kind of looks like him, come on, man.

Ok, that host guy really needed to accept that receding hairline and disappearing hair back whenever this clip was made

I always disliked the movie ending, it felt dismissive and camp in light of the horrible thing they had just done. I am glad to know that he strongly disapproved of it as well. They should have gone with what he wrote. It is far better and shows some growth in the character of Vic. Yes, they are desperate and do horrible things to survive, but at least they understand loyalty and love.

Nerd Guy it really isn't. I honestly enjoy both to some degree but when you get to the end of Ellison's story and read that final paragraph it hits hard.

Great Science Fiction is best moving cautionary tales like Matheson's Last Man on Earth -Omega Man-I am Legend, the story tag line on the poster is 2024, this year and its showing on TV, not cable haha

In the movie, the men that were underground society inhabitants died sexually from a lack of sunlight, but in the book, their neat and clean way of living made soft men that only produced babies that had slots instead of balls.

I don't like the author, he doesn't understand that it's the absurdity that makes the movie so awesome. "dogs doesn't say that" like the movie is realistic in other cases.

Harlan Ellison should be read, not listened to. He's a horrible person.

    • @cpt.dr.hawkeye1740

What makes him a horrible person? He simply holds very strong views and doesn't have time for petty questions or unreason. I have tremendous respect for the man, but that being said.... I probably would never want to meet him.

I think it's mostly because of his general disregard for others. I personally enjoy his bullshit, but whatever

+Sereen Kayoss There's a difference in having a disregard for people and a disregard for people's ignorant opinions. Look at Orson Scott Card, he has a disregard for certain people to the point where it's blatant and offensive and hateful. Ellison simply has no tolerance for ignorance.

+Jonas Nordin Very true my friend. My favorite of his quotes is "You are not entitled to your opinion, you are entitled to your informed opinion." I think that he is very wise and is one of many writers who actually challenge the audience's intellect.

Actually anyone that knows Ellison at all, knows he's one of the biggest jerks probably in the history of the world.
Just read his hate manifesto towards Gene Roddenberry because he dared change his S.T. script(For the better)
But I can say my intolerance for his self righteous assholism doesn't stop me from respecting the man as a author.
Some of you pretending to be tolerant can learn a lot from the above line.
