    I never understood the hate for Virus. I think it's a really fun action movie with an interesting cast of characters. The practical effects look great too.

      "Virus" is practically a semi-remake of an old 1980's sci-fi/horror film called "Moontrap" (which was also a movie about alien robots using human beings for spare parts

    I quite liked Virus, but it had some influence, the game Cold Fear totally ripped it off.

    The lawnmower man is actually one of my personal favourite sci fi films, I do think it has aged with the effects but al least the ideas and concepts still look fascinating, I liked the story brosnan and fahey really done well, my only complaint is the movie does have some soap opera moments that just don't work and yes the swarm of digital bees was stupid, a remake of this movie wouldn't be a bad idea though, I think they really could expand the effects and the virtual worlds

    The Lawnmower Man is a classic! It's definitely a product of its era regarding the clothes, hairstyles, set, visuals, etc, but I think it's a genuinely creepy movie with some great performances and the story is pretty interesting.

    the story lawnmower man by stephen king isn't about what you said at all. it's about a guy hiring a gardener to cut his grass, and later he looks out of the window and sees hin crawling naked over the lawn and cutting the grass with his teeth. later he attacks him or some shit.
    apart from that, great video as always!

    I remember here in Denmark, when the movie came out on video, that the VHS cover at the rental store, had a black bar bringer on top of the Title (where Stephen Kings name was on the original poster) and thought it looked funny. But it was obviously done in the last moment, so the covers was printer one more time with the black bar.

    • @evilbob840
      @evilbob840 5 років тому

      I worked in a video store in the US when Lawnmower Man came out. A few months later, (after Steven King won the lawsuit) we got shipped little black bars to tape over the words "Steven King's" on the boxes.

    Despite I already have The Lawnmower Man (Unrated director's cut) on VHS, I was thinking of buying the 2-Disc collector's edition on Blu-ray (my uncle gave me his Sony Blu-ray/DVD home theater syetem a few weeks ago). Both the VHS, Laserdisc, original DVD and the 2-Disc Collector's Edition Blu-ray has the 1988-94 New Line logo in the beginning in the film.

    Most VR of the time, was a moving chair (or group of chairs) controlled by hydrolics, synced with a movie played from video tape. computer graphics was not far enough along to render such detail in real time, unless the video were limited to vector graphics or other simple graphics as such.

    I'd forgotten this film (Virus) existed! My dad rented it one evening on VHS from Blockbuster (something he did often for a couple of years during my late teens) probably in the year 2000 and we watched it together. I remember thinking it looked really cheap, as if it were made for TV. Perhaps they did a really good job remastering it for a new blu-ray release? As for lawnmower man I remember it coming out in the cinema in the early 90s but I was far too young to be even remotely interested in it. Then I found it on amazon prime video a couple of years ago. Apart from the terrible early 90s CGI in finale and Piers Brosnan's nonsensical line about it taking him years to learn the alphabet I really enjoyed it.

    Virus: the premise of this film was so great, I actually dreamed about going to see it in theaters... So much wasted potential, this should be the kind of movie to get a remake...
    The Lawnmower man: One of my favorites in the early 90s, I guess I was in love with the idea of getting smarter with drugs and videogames...
    Great reviews, Thanx, mate!!!

    Nice video Oliver. Both these films are ones I haven't seen since they first came out, and remember only kind of liking them. I remember thinking the CGI visuals in Lawnmower Man were neat, and liking the robot creatures in Virus, but finding them both a bit boring otherwise. But they're both kind of watchable too, despite being iffy...they ride the line, for me. Might try and catch them on a streaming service somewhere if they don't release over here on a cheap blu ray.

    • @OliverHarper
      @OliverHarper  7 років тому

      Yeah I think you're right Paul, they're a bit dull but watchable. Both have their moments where you lose interest in whats happening then a big moment occurs to perk your interest.

    To my mind this is your best review, as we can see you know instead of you being the usual Invisible Man narrator. Not the 2 best films ever made (I'd never heard of VIRUS ) BUT i did Like LAWN MOWER MAN, having seen it on it's release, it was one of those...cinema gambles for me, but it was getting good reviews.
    It was also one of those surprise films where it's better than you thought it would be, with quite an original story (I don't know if Stephen King had anything to do with it or not, in the writing.

    I watched Virus on VHS very recently. There was a picture of one of the cyborg thingies in the back cover and I thought it looked really cool so I gave it a watch. The film was very mediocre but the special effects were great. I actually thought that the CGI only looks good because it's VHS but now that I saw clips from the Blu-Ray I gotta say that's some impressive stuff for 1998.
    Lawnmover Man I saw a few years ago also on VHS. It was the director's cut and it really did feel like a TV movie most of the time. The CGI is goofy but charming. I really liked Jeff Fahey in this. I thought he did a fantastic job. I actually like the original poster and I'd love to hang it on my wall. Gotta get my hands on it!

      I read the Stephen King novella years ago. It was basically about a retarded guy who goes around on his hands and knees, mowing people's lawns by eating the grass. Lol, that was pretty much it from what I remember, had practically nothing in common with the film other than the title. Not surprised King filed a lawsuit.

    The Lawnmower Man the greatest movie ever. Great acting. The main point of Jobe's anger feels so correct as a commentary on humanity. LW2: Beyond cyber space was horrible and the worse movie ever.

    This is by far the most thoughtful and most fair review I have seen of The Lawnmower Man. (Thank you Oliver Harper). This is not a bad film, anymore than Psycho is to be consider a bad film, or any of the old Twilight Zone episodes to be considered bad. When this movie was new, it was very trippy and immersive, an amazing production that works. Okay sure we have the means to create more "up to date" content for a lot less money, but then I still prefer everything that the graphics in this film are, to some cheap Shockwave video. I don't know for sure, but looking at a lot of what is here, it looks like the video producers made use of the Amiga computing platform (probably Amiga 3000 or 4000) and Video Toaster.
    This is always going to be one of my favorite films, and the graphics were more than adequate even for today to convey technological realism. I don't like graphics nor sound that are so realistic that one forgets they are interacting with a machine. The graphics in this film are an epic balance between the two in my opinion. It would have been nice if the computer's voice that said "initiating brain stem" and other dialog, had been produced with a vocoder, but oh well. Also it has never bothered me at all that the backstory and progression of the storyline was both lacking and predictable. There are films with cult followings that are far worse than this one. The Lawnmower Man will always be a favorite film for me. Again Oliver Harper, thank you for giving a thoughtful and honest review of this film, in stead of just ripping it for having been produced with older CG technology and completely overlooking the film's virtues and appeal as most other reviewers of The Lawnmower Man seem to do here on UA-cam.

    I have never understood the ideas behind this movie. Everyone who has not heard of King's novel would never think the movie is a sci-fi movie and about virtual reality. And everyone who has read the novel will hate the movie for the changes they have made. Seems like a lose-lose situation. Why not just make this kind of movie with a different title? That would make so much more sense.

    The picture quality on LAWN MOWER MAN was pretty crappy on the original Region 2 release (before blue ray came out) I don't know if it's been remastered, surprisingly not ALL bl ray films get remastered for the format it seems, meaning your no better off despite paying more money.
    I'm sure that you know Arrow films usually on blue ray ARE available on region 2 for the u,k some of them at least.

    If anyone's after a region free player, I got a good little Sony machine off Amazon Marketplace for £99.99 (several are fulfilled by Amazon and available with Prime delivery), and for a bit more money you can get better quality models. Check carefully though, some will say multiregion, but it's only DVD playback that applies to. Most post a picture which shows all the regions the player can handle, so look for one that has A, B, C on it as well as 1-6. It's worth it, imo, just to be able to pick up Region A discs that we don't get access to, often with better features.

    Lawnmowerman (the movie) has some clever ideas, but it gets really messy at the end and the screenwriter left all the shitty Stephen King tropes in, which are the first things to have to go when adapting SK's material for the screen.
